Summer 2020 Study Abroad
"Inequality & Activism in Brazil"
LEARN MORE:
ANTH 442/SOC 352/AFRAS 300/GENS 450 (3 units)Learning will take place both inside and outside the classroom as we explore the
Africana experience in Brazil. Nearly 40% of African captives during the
centuries long European slave trade were destined for Brazil. Today, Brazil has
the largest population of African people outside of Africa. The largest
concentration of African Brazilians live in the state of Bahia. We will also
examine the different forms of inequality in Brazil, learning theoretical
approaches to social and economic disparity, meeting with local activists at
grassroots NGOs, and exploring what might be done to alleviate poverty, as well
as other forms of social injustice worldwide.
