Dear Friends,

Welcome to another month of great music-making at the RPO! Spring finally may be arriving in Rochester, but we at the Rochester Philharmonic already are looking ahead to the fall of 2015—the beginning of Ward Stare’s Inaugural Season as the RPO’s twelfth Music Director.

In February, the RPO presented our first-ever season announcement concert, a free event in Kodak Hall with the full orchestra and Maestro Stare, to rave reviews from the community. Highlights from next season include our electrifying Philharmonics Series opener on September 17 and 19, featuring Ward conducting four unforgettable masterworks including 20th century Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s sonic showpiece Pines of Rome. One week prior, our Pops Series opens with Principal Pops Conductor Jeff Tyzik and Megan Hilty, star of NBC’s Smash and Broadway’s Wicked. Looking toward the holiday season, the RPO will present a screening of Home Alone with live orchestral accompaniment of John Williams’ score. Renew by Friday, April 17 to lock in your seats for the 2015-16 season!

Looking to the present, this month we welcome the talents of our frequent collaborators at Rochester City Ballet and our new friends at FuturPointe Dance for an evening of dance blending the classical with the contemporary (March 12 & 14). Next up, jazz vocalist Denzal Sinclaire takes the stage for an evening of Nat King Cole favorites, including “L-O-V-E” and “Straighten Up And Fly Right” (March 20 & 21). Following a triumphant debut with the RPO in 2014, Parisian conductor Fabien Gabel returns to interpret two shades of Molière—from Lully’s Baroque score for a Molière comedy to Richard Strauss’ late-Romantic interpretation—on our Sunday Matinee Series at Hochstein (March 22). In April, the Peking Acrobats will amaze with their troupe of contortionists, jugglers, cyclists, and gymnasts, backed by orchestral accompaniment (April 17 & 18). On April 19, our Sunday Matinee Series continues at Third Presbyterian Church with renowned concert organist David Higgs, chair of the organ department at the Eastman School of Music.

Ward StareMusic DirectorWard Stare has been described as a “rising star in the conducting firmament” by the Chicago Tribune. His current season includes debuts with orchestras around the world, including performances with the Baltimore, Sydney, Pittsburgh, and New World symphonies, as well as the Calgary Philharmonic.

Stare’s frequent collaboration with the Lyric Opera of Chicago began with his debut in 2012 conducting performances of Hansel and Gretel; he returned in 2013 to lead Die Fledermaus and again in November 2014 to lead Porgy and Bess. He led the Lyric Opera of Chicago Orchestra and Chorus in 2013 for his Millennium Park debut at LOC’s annual “Stars of Lyric Opera” concert. Following his debut with the Opera Theater of St. Louis in 2013 conducting Il Tabarro and Pagliacci, Stare returned to OTSL the next season for performances of Dialogues of the Carmelites. He made his debut with the Washington National Opera conducting Donizetti’s comic opera L’elisir d’amore in 2014.

Stare served as the Resident Conductor of the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2012. In 2009, he made his Carnegie Hall debut with the orchestra, stepping in at the last minute to lead H.K. Gruber’s Frankenstein!! The 2013-14 season saw his return to the Atlanta and Detroit symphony orchestras, as well as his debuts with the Syracuse Symphoria, the Jacksonville Symphony, and the Naples Philharmonic. Jeff tyzikPrincipal Pops ConductorGrammy Award winner Jeff Tyzik is one of America’s most innovative and sought-after pops conductors, recognized for his brilliant arrangements, original programming, and engaging rapport with audiences of all ages.

In the 2013-14 concert season, Jeff Tyzik celebrated his 20th season as Principal Pops Conductor of the RPO. In August 2013, Tyzik was named to The Dot and Paul Mason Principal Pops Conductor’s Podium at the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. The 2013-14 season also marked the

beginning of Tyzik’s new role as Principal Pops Conductor of the Seattle Symphony, the Detroit Symphony, and The Florida Orchestra, and he continues to serve as Principal Pops Conductor of the Oregon Symphony. Highly sought-after as a guest conductor, Tyzik has appeared with the Boston Pops, Cincinnati Pops, Milwaukee Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, Toronto Symphony, Indianapolis Symphony, Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Tyzik made his U.K. debut in 2010 with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In May 2007, the harmonia mundi label released his recording of works by Gershwin with pianist Jon Nakamatsu and the RPO, which stayed in the Top 10 on the Billboard classical chart for over three months.

Tyzik has collaborated with such diverse artists as Chris Botti, Matthew Morrison, Wynonna Judd, Tony Bennett, Art Garfunkel, Dawn Upshaw, Marilyn Horne, Arturo Sandoval, The Chieftains, Mark O’Connor, Doc Severinsen, and has created numerous original programs that include the greatest music from jazz and classical to Motown, Broadway, film, dance, Latin, and swing. Michael Daugherty is one of the most commissioned, performed, and recorded composers on the American concert music scene today. His music is rich with cultural allusions and bears the stamp of classic modernism, with colliding tonalities and blocks of sound; at the same time, his melodies can be eloquent and stirring.

The composer has supplied the following note.

The pianist and entertainer known as Liberace is one of the most intriguing American icons for crossing over, in more ways than one. Dressed in spectacular furs and rhinestone costumes, Wladziu Valentino Liberace (1919-1993) was famous for performing polkas, Broadway tunes, and arrangements of the classical piano repertoire, accompanied by a Las Vegas show band. In my tribute to Liberace, I do not treat popular music as a foreign intrusion into the abstract idiom of contemporary classical composition. Starting from the vernacular idiom, I have composed Le Tombeau de Liberace (1996) as a meditation on the American sublime: a lexicon of forbidden music.

The first movement, Rhinestone Kickstep, conveys the feeling of strutting down the glittering cement streets of Las Vegas, in boogie-woogie rhythms. The second movement, How Do I Love Thee? comes from the well-known sonnet by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, frequently recited by Liberace during his performances. In Sequin Music, the third movement, the arpeggiated piano riffs are based on a sequence of musical notes which I noticed on the wall of Liberace’s famous piano-shaped swimming pool. The composition concludes with Candelabra Rhumba, a pianistic tour de force that recreates the excitement of a Vegas show band, keeping the candles on Liberace’s candelabra lit.

Milhaud’s plan to compose a jazz-based piece changed when in 1923 he received a commission from Rolf de Maré, producer of the innovative company known as the Swedish Ballet. Author Blaise Cendrars and choreographer Jean Börlin developed their contributions to the project from African myths about the beginnings of life. Although brief jazz-flavored works by Satie, Auric and Stravinsky had already appeared, Milhaud’s ballet was the first sizeable piece to blend the jazz and classical idioms (Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue premiered four months after Milhaud’s piece).

In the original production, which debuted in Paris on October 25, 1923, the curtain rose on near darkness, gradually revealing a mass of intertwined dancers. The African gods of creation intervened in this state of chaos by chanting magic spells. Life began to erupt:

Tchaikovsky paid his respects to Mozart in several pieces, including Serenade for Strings (1880). He composed it immediately after the bombastic 1812 Overture, a commissioned work that he had written hastily and with little enthusiasm. “I wrote [the Overture] without any warm feelings of love and so it will probably be of no artistic worth,” he wrote. “But the Serenade, on the contrary, I wrote from inner compulsion. This is a piece from the heart and so, I venture to say, it does not lack artistic worth.” The public premiere in October 1881 found much success.

Tchaikovsky told a friend that he intended the opening movement as a tribute to Mozart, whose opera The Magic Flute he had recently been studying for relaxation. A stately introduction in slow tempo leads to a vigorous and charming allegro. A lovely waltz follows, then a sweet, heartfelt elegy. The finale makes use of two Russian folk songs. The first is treated as a slow, wistful introduction. The second kicks off the ensuing allegro with mischievous charm, a quality abetted by a gracious second theme of Tchaikovsky’s own invention. Near the close, the return of the first movement’s opening theme brings the serenade full circle.

The famed Russian/American choreographer George Balanchine created his ballet set to Tchaikovsky’s Serenade in 1934. Following several student performances, the American Ballet gave the public premiere in New York on March 1, 1935.

Here is Milhaud’s own description of his emotionally charged, yet tender and dignified music: “The expansive saxophone melody is followed by the rhythmic theme, the fugue that infects the whole orchestra with its agitation. The music accompanying the appearance of the plants and animals is very sinuous. Furthermore there is the clarinet concertino which heralds the dance of desire, then the superimposition of the concertino and the fugue which marks the climax of the ballet, the mating dance. The saxophone is heard once again and the coda brings together and disperses the work’s different melodic elements within the space of a few bars.”

artistsDaniel Meyer, guest conductorAs Music Director of the Asheville Symphony and Erie Philharmonic, conductor Daniel Meyer has reinvigorated both orchestras with his innovative programs, engaging presence, and keen musical intellect.

He began the 2014-15 season leading a week of Strauss and Bartók with the Wiener Jeunesse Orchestra (Austria), culminating in concerts in Vienna and Bratislava. In Asheville N.C., Meyer curates the Amadeus Festival, a week of Mozart events and concerts with Emmanuel Ax. In both Asheville and Erie Pa., he continues the mission of programming contemporary American works by John Adams, Anne Clyne, Jennifer Higdon, and Duke Ellington amongst the masterworks of Beethoven and Bartók, Dvořák and Ravel. In recent seasons Meyer has conducted the Columbus, Phoenix, Alabama, and Knoxville symphonies among others and made his European debut with the Staatstheater Stuttgart Orchestra (Germany). His last appearance with the RPO was in July 2014 for Pixar in Concert.

Resident Conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony and Music Director of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, from 2002-2009, he led the Pittsburgh Symphony on tour and conducted numerous subscription weeks and world premieres. With the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, Meyer led the PYSO on their first tour to China and international tours to Vienna, Prague, Leipzig, and Budapest.

In 2002, Meyer received the Aspen Conducting Prize and was invited to return as assistant conductor in 2003 and to lead a subscription performance at the Aspen Music Festival. He is a graduate of Denison University and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and studied conducting at the Hochschule für Musik in Vienna as a rotary ambassadorial scholar.

Andrew Russo, pianoA native of Syracuse, N.Y., Andrew Russo is a graduate of The Juilliard School, and pursued post-graduate studies in Leipzig and Paris with pianist/alternative pedagogue Frederic Chiu. Russo’s early career was spent as an advocate of American composers and American music. He has performed in many of the world’s cultural capitals, including Paris, London, Moscow, Rome, Tokyo, New York City and Los Angeles, among others. His last appearance with the RPO was in November 2013 for Disney’s Fantasia.

In 2001, he became the first pianist to perform a significant work using alternative techniques requiring the inside and frame of the piano as well as the keys at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. Soon after, he was featured in Peter Rosen’s internationally broadcast documentary Playing on the Edge and profiled in The New York Times writer James Barron’s book, The Making of a Steinway Concert Grand.

With 11 commercial recordings to his credit, the highlight of Russo’s recording career was a 2007 Grammy nomination for his Black Box Records release of music by John Corigliano. Russo’s most recent recording appears on Naxos later this year and features new works of Aaron Kernis, including Three Flavors for piano and orchestra—commissioned by Russo.

Currently, Russo is the Director of Wealth Management for Strategic Financial Services in the Syracuse market. He lives in Jamesville, N.Y. with his wife, Natalia, and their children, Andrei and Mila.

artistsJamey Leverett, Rochester City Ballet artistic directorJamey Leverett has been the artistic director of Rochester City Ballet (RCB) since 2003 succeeding the founding director, Timothy M. Draper. She brings a collaborative perspective and a commitment to technical excellence to her work. Leverett is a prolific contemporary ballet choreographer. In the past eight years, she has created more than 20 works including Bravo! Colorado, LumaVoce, Peter & the Wolf, 4Play, as well as her critically acclaimed full-length ballet, The Blood Countess.

Under Leverett’s inspired direction, RCB has collaborated with various musicians such as the Cello Divas, Stephen Kennedy, Jeff Tyzik and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Deborah Fox, The Ying Quartet, and pianist Elinor Freer. She has invited guest choreographers like Patrick Corbin, Daniel Gwirtzman, and Edward Ellison to set work on the company. RCB has also performed American masterworks by Balanchine (Serenade) and Arpino (Valentine).

Leverett also serves as the artistic director for the Timothy M. Draper Center for Dance Education—the official training school of RCB. She teaches master classes throughout the country and has been a lecturer in the Dance Department at SUNY Brockport.

George Balanchine, Serenade choreographerBorn in St. Petersburg, Russia, George Balanchine (1904-1983) is regarded as the foremost contemporary ballet choreographer. He came to the U.S. in 1933, at the age of 29, accepting the invitation of the young American arts patron Lincoln Kirstein (1907-96), whose great passions included the dream of creating a ballet company in America. Balanchine founded the School of American Ballet that today rivals the long-established European schools. Several ballet companies directed by the two were created and dissolved in the years that followed, and in 1948, the New York City Ballet was born. Balanchine served as its ballet master and principal choreographer from 1948 until his death in 1983.

Balanchine’s more than 400 dance works include Serenade (1934), Concerto Barocco (1941), Symphony in C (1947), Agon (1957), Symphony in Three Movements (1972), Stravinsky Violin Concerto (1972), and Vienna Waltzes (1977). His final ballet, a new version of Stravinsky’s Variations for Orchestra ,was created in 1982.

A major artistic figure of the 20th century, Balanchine revolutionized the look of classical ballet. Taking classicism as his base, he heightened, quickened, expanded, streamlined, and even inverted the fundamentals of the 400-year-old language of academic dance. N’Jelle Gage cofounded FuturPointe with Guy Thorne in 2009 with the vision of re-introducing the Caribbean’s creative diversity to the dance community and to promote cross-cultural dialogue and conviviality.

Gage teaches master classes in Caribbean contemporary dance techniques including Reggae Ballet and Tecnica Cubana at college residencies, festivals, and studios. She has toured 18 cities worldwide and has performed the work of acclaimed contemporary choreographers such as Dr. L’Antoinette Stines, Clive Thompson, Makeda Thomas, Eduardo Rivero, Professor Rex Nettleford, Chris Walker, and Bill Evans. She is an awardee of the 2014 Lillian Fairchild Memorial Award.

Born in Jamaica, Gage began her career as protégé of Norma Spence and as soloist with Jamaica’s first classical ballet company. She boarded at the home of acclaimed ballerina Nina Novak while attending Academia Ballet Clasico (Venezuela) as a scholarship student from 1988-90. As a teen, Gage was mentored by Tatjana Sedunova (Lithuanian opera and ballet theater) and has performed her choreography. At 15 years old she became the youngest member of L’ Acadco—widely regarded as the Caribbean’s leading cutting-edge contemporary dance company, known for inventive fusion of folklore and modern movement.

Gage also lived in Cuba and studied with renowned Cuban Ballet and Contemporary Dance faculty at Instituto Superior/Escuela Nacional de Artes in Havana. She concluded her internship with Danza Contemporanea de Cuba in 2000 and graduated with a degree in performance/choreography and teaching.

Guy Thorne, FuturPointe Dance artistic director, cofounder, choreographer, and dancerGuy Thorne is primarily responsible for the development and execution of FuturPointe’s artistic vision. His current choreographic work explores the confluence of Caribbean folklore as well as popular and contemporary dance forms infused with his short film and multimedia creations.

Thorne moved to the U.S. as a scholarship student at Dance Theater of Harlem in New York City before becoming a principal dancer with Garth Fagan Dance for seven years. He is the recipient of an award of Distinguished Accomplishment in Dance for notable national and international work as well as an awardee of the 2014 Lillian Fairchild Memorial Award.

Thorne recently collaborated with 2013 MacArthur Genius Award recipient Carrie Mae Weems on A Story Within A Story, a multimedia performance about social identity and visual imagery. Thorne was on the dance faculty at Nazareth College and SUNY Potsdam. In 2012, he introduced Rochester-area children to Jonkanoo, an Afro-Caribbean performing art that combines costume making, singing, dancing, and drumming, as part of his role as a Jubilation Foundation Fellow.

Thorne has danced at locations such as the Ted Shawn Theater at Jacob’s Pillow, Joyce Theater, and the Lincoln and Kennedy Centers, among others. Thorne has over 15 years of professional experience and has toured extensively and taught master classes throughout the world. For his performances at world-class venues he has received critical acclaim from critics in the New York Times and from other major publications.

He first attracted international attention in 2004 when he won the prestigious Donatella Flick conducting competition in London, which subsequently led to his appointment as the London Symphony Orchestra assistant conductor from 2004-2006. In 2014-15 and 2015-16 he returns to conduct the Oslo Philharmonic, BBC, Houston, and Toronto symphony orchestras, as well as the Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Royal Flemish Philharmonic, Brussels Philharmonic, Bremer Philharmoniker, and Filharmonica de Galicia. He will debut with the Danish National and Detroit symphony orchestras, as well as the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker, Helsinki Philharmonic, NDR Sinfonie Orchester, Seoul Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Belgique, Auckland Symphony, and Brisbane’s Queensland Symphony. He also will conduct Carmen at the Norwegian Opera in Oslo. He returns to the RPO following a highly successful debut in January 2014.Born in Paris, Gabel began studying trumpet at the age of six, honing his skills at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris and later at the Musik Hochschule of Karlsruhe. He went on to play in Parisian orchestras under the direction of prominent conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Sir Colin Davis, Riccardo Muti, Seiji Ozawa, Simon Rattle, and Bernard Haitink. In 2002, Gabel pursued his interest in conducting at the Aspen Summer Music Festival, where he studied with David Zinman.

artistsThe peking AcrobatsSince their debut in 1986, The Peking Acrobats® have redefined audience perceptions of Chinese acrobatics. They have performed for symphony concert audiences across North America, including the San Francisco Symphony, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra at the prestigious Ravinia Festival, the Buffalo Philharmonic, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, and the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra. In 2003, they debuted with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra as part of the Hollywood Bowl’s Fireworks Season Finale, where the company blended acrobatics with the majestic sound of the 100-piece Hollywood Bowl Orchestra. In 2011, The Peking Acrobats debuted in Canada with the Winnipeg and Edmonton symphony orchestras. This is their first appearance with the RPO.

TV appearances include The Wayne Brady Show, That’s Incredible, ABC’s Wide World of Sports, and NBC’s Ring in the New Year holiday special. They also have appeared on Nickelodeon’s Unfabulous, and Ellen’s Really Big Show, hosted by comedian and talk show host, Ellen DeGeneres. They hold a Guinness World Record for the Human Chair Stack, which they performed on FOX’s Guinness Book Primetime TV. Internationally, they have appeared on the Artistgalla, a benefit show filmed live at the Drammens Theatre in Oslo, Norway. On recent European tours, they have appeared on RAI TV in Italy, and in Holland on Zapp Live and Limburg Vandaag TV shows.

As part of the 2015 North American Tour, the Peking Acrobats will be joined onstage tonight by JIGU! Thunder Drums of China. Hailing from the Shanxi Province in China, this world-renowned company of drummers, percussionists, and musicians has toured North America many times before and thrilled audiences around the globe with awe-inspiring performances.

artistsShizuo Kuwahara, guest conductorFirst prize winner of the prestigious Georg Solti International Conductors’ Competition in Germany, Kuwahara is currently the music director of Symphony Orchestra Augusta. He previously was with The Philadelphia Orchestra as a League of American Orchestras conducting fellow as an apprentice to Christoph Eschenbach. He was an assistant conductor at the Saito Kinen Festival in 2008, where he was an assistant to Seiji Ozawa, and conducted the Ozawa Jyuku Orchestra. In 2006, he served as an assistant conductor to Valery Gergiev at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan. He also served as Professor of Music and Director of Orchestra Activities at the College of William & Mary and American University, as well as an associate conductor of the Virginia Symphony. Frequent guest conductor of the Baltimore Symphony, Nice Philharmonic and Japan Philharmonic, his past guest conducting appearances include Frankfurt Museum Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Jacksonville Symphony, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Century Orchestra Osaka, Osaka Symphony Orchestra, Nagoya Philharmonic, Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa, Polish Chamber Philharmonic, Philharmonia Slaska, Sinfonieorchester den Nationalen Philharmonischen Gesellshaft der Uklaine Kiew, Nice Philharmonic, L’Orchestre Pasdeloup, German Radio Symphony Orchestra and Salta Symphony in Argentina. This is his first appearance with the RPO. Born in Tokyo, he studied conducting at Yale University and at the Eastman School of Music. He also studied with Leonard Slatkin, David Zinman, Timothy Muffitt and Michael Jinbo at various conducting institutions, including Aspen, the National Conducting Institute, the Pierre Monteux School, and the Chautauqua Music Institute.

David Higgs, organOne of America’s leading concert organists, David Higgs is Chair of the Organ Department at the Eastman School of Music. He performs extensively throughout the United States and abroad, and has inaugurated many important new instruments worldwide, including the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas. For more than 20 years, the San Francisco Symphony featured his holiday organ recitals at Davies Symphony Hall, and now the Los Angeles Philharmonic/Hollywood Bowl continues that tradition each year at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. His performances with numerous orchestras and ensembles have included the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Orpheus Ensemble, Chanticleer, and the Empire Brass.

Higgs’s recent performances abroad include recitals in Japan, France, and Germany. He frequently performs, teaches, and adjudicates at the great organ festivals and competitions around the world, and in September 2015 he will be a featured recitalist and adjudicator at the Gottfried Silbermann Competition in Freiberg, Germany. His performances for colleagues include international, national, regional and pedagogy conventions for the American Guild of Organists and other professional national and international organizations.

Higgs was appointed to the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music upon graduation from that institution. He was subsequently appointed to the faculty of the Eastman School of Music in 1992, and since that time his students have won major competitions and hold many of the top positions in the United States.

Higgs has recorded for Delos International, Pro Organo, Arsis, Loft, and Gothic records. This is his first appearance with the RPO.

Since its founding by George Eastman in 1922, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has been committed to enriching and inspiring our community through the art of music. Currently in its 92nd year, the RPO is dedicated to maintaining its high standard of artistic excellence, unique tradition of musical versatility, and deep commitment to education and community engagement.

Today, the RPO presents up to 130 concerts per year, serving nearly 150,000 people through ticketed events, education and community engagement activities, and concerts in schools and community centers throughout the region. A highlight of the 2013–14 season was the RPO’s performance at Carnegie Hall on May 7, 2014, as part of the Spring For Music festival. RPO concerts are rebroadcast on WXXI 91.5 FM. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

TICKETS: The Eastman Theatre Box Office is located at 433 East Main St., downtown Rochester.The Box Office is open Mon-Sat, 10AM-5PM; 10AM-3PM on non-concert Saturdays; and 60 minutes prior to performances and through intermission. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 585-454-2100 or online through rpo.org; tickets are also available at all Rochester-area Wegmans. Discounts are available for groups of 10+. Call 585-454-2100.

PARKING: Paid parking for Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre is available at the East End Garage, located next to the theatre with entrances on Main, Scio, and Swan Streets. Paid parking for the Performance Hall at Hochstein is available at the Sister Cities Garage, located behind the school at Church and Fitzhugh Streets.

PRE-CONCERT TALKS: Philharmonics ticket-holders are welcome to attend pre-concert talks, held one hour before all philharmonics concerts in the orchestra level of the theatre.

SERVICES FOR PATRONS WITH DISABILITIES: Wheelchair locations and seating for those with disabilities are available at all venues; please see the house manager or an usher for assistance. Elevators are located in the oval lobby of Kodak Hall and in the East Wing. A wheelchair-accessible restroom is available on the first floor.

SERVICES FOR HARD-OF-HEARING PATRONS: Audio systems are available at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre; headsets may be obtained from an usher prior to the performance.

CHANGING SEATS: If you find it necessary to be reseated for any reason, please contact an usher who will bring your request to the House Manager.

LOST AND FOUND: Items found in Kodak Hall will be held at the Eastman Theatre Box Office, 433 E. Main Street. For more info, call 585-454-2100.

ELECTRONIC DEVICES: The use of cameras or audio recording equipment is strictly prohibited. Patrons are asked to turn off all personal electronic devices prior to the performance.

REFRESHMENTS: Food and drink are not permitted in the concert hall, except for bottled water. Refreshments are available for purchase in Betty’s Café located on the orchestra level of Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.

TICKET DONATION: If you are unable to attend a concert, please consider donating your tickets to us as a tax-deductible contribution. Return your tickets to the RPO no later than 2PM the day of the performance to make them available for resale.

Slated to take over as University of Roch-

ester Medical Center CEO in January, Mark

Taubman M.D. will head the largest divi-

sion of UR—the region’s largest employer.

Taubman already serves as dean of the

School of Medicine and Dentistry.

The sprawling medical complex is one

of the nation’s leading research institu-

tions and provides much of the health care

in the greater Rochester area and a broad

swath of the Finger Lakes region. It al-

so employs some two-thirds of UR’s ap-

proximately 25,000-employee workforce.

In an arrangement previously untried

at UR, Taubman plans to stay at the helm

of School of Medicine and Dentistry after

he steps into the CEO slot.

UTC Retail Inc. grabbed the top spot on the 2014 Roches-

ter Top 100.The Victor, Ontario County-based company rose to the

top of this year’s list after being absent from the annual tally

for roughly a decade, dating back to when it was known as

Ultimate Technology Corp.

UTC Retail, which employs 76 workers, is a retail technology

company that offers products and services that help retailers

improve their business. Its clients range from the corporate

headquarters of retailers with as few as 25 stores to compa-
