Connection ModesAllA5S…sensorsareavailablewithahard-wiredcableattached,orwithasocketaccept-ingplug-inconnectors.Thisistheeasierwaytohandlealongcable.Suchcanbeprovidedinstandard(upto85°C)orhightemp(upto125°C)Teflonquality.Withastraightorangularplug,inmetallicorplasticenclosure,alltighttoIP67.Or,theconnectorsonly.

Fordutyunderliquidshowever,orwithnarrowspaceapplications,thefirmcableisthebetterchoice.Availablewithbothinsulationqualities,andanyrequestedlength.

TheHalleffect(namedforitsdiscoverer)utilizesthefact,thatamag-neticfieldmaygenerateavoltagewithinasemi-conductor.Anddoesthisindependentofitsrateofchange(i.e.speedofmotion)–unliketheinductioneffectofmagneticpick-ups,whichrelyontherateandthereforeareweakatlowspeed.ThesensorsA5S…includetheneces-sarymagnet(M)andthehallelementchip(E).Withtheprofilepassingby,themagneticfieldvaries,therebycreatingthesignalvoltagewithinthechip.Hereitisimportanttokeepinmind,thatthesignaldoesnotfadeatlowspeed.

The Differential Hall Effect Principle Itengagesatwinchiphallelement,andthesignalamplifier(V)usesonlythedifferencebetweenboth.Itisthenamplifiedtoprovidethepowersquarewaveoutput.

Its Advantages:Byitsnature,thisdifferentialprinciplecompensatestargetvibrations.Anditbalancesanexternalmagneticfield.Bothimportantaspectsforareliablesignal.

Requirements to the target

Target materialAnystandardsteelwillbeaccepted,butnotstainlesssteel(asnon-magnetic),andnotanon-ferrousmaterial.Slotsinasteelprofilemaybefilledwithsuchmaterial,however,or asteelboltinsertedinanon-magneticpart.

Singlepermanentmagnetsinsertedintoanon-magneticrotorwillalsotriggerthesensor,andmayevenallowforasomewhatlargergap.

Target profileAstandardgearwheelisfrequentlyused,asitiseasytogetandtoplaceontheshaft.Asplitgearwheelmusthaveitsdivisionatthebottombetweentheteeth.Slotsmilledintoasteelshaftorotherrotorresultinasharpandwelldefinedsignal.Butcareshouldbetakentohavesmoothsurfaceandedges.Thesensorwithitssharpresolutionmightotherwiserespondtoscratchesorotherirregularities.Careshouldalsobegiventoaregularpositionofslots,holes,orboltsattherotor.Hexagonalscrewheadsmayresultinanirregularpulsedivision.Aslotorsuchlikeinthescrewheadmaycausemultiplepulses.

Repeatability of the profile marksAnimportantfactor,specificallywithhigh accuracyandhighreliabilityapplications.An irregularity,thoughcoveredupbytheaverag-ingautomaticsinourevaluatingunitsmaycauseafluctuationinthemeasurement.Andthepulsedivider,compensatinganyirregular-ity,willaffectthefastresponseoftheunit. Thesameaccuracy,asrequestedforthemea-surement,shouldapplytotheprofiledivision. Number of polesThisisofimportancemainlywhenmeasur-ingalowspeed.Bynature,themeasurementcannotreacttoavariationbeforethenextpoleisdetected.Athigherspeedtheperiodautomaticsmain-tainsaprogrammedresponsetime.Seeour literatureaboutmeasurementforfurtherde-tails.Anincreaseinthenumberofpolesdoesnotcontributetohighermeasuringaccuracywithourunits,butitmighthelpintheirfastreaction.

Sensor positioningAradialorientationofthesensortothetargetcircumferenceisrecommended.Itspositioninparalleltotherotationalaxis,thoughpossible,mayinvolveproblemscausedbyalateralshiftofthetarget.Allspecificationsrefertotherecommendedradialposition.ThedifferentialprincipleoftheA5S…sensors,whichhelpstohindertheinfluenceofothermagneticfieldsandmachinevibrations,neces-sitatesacorrectpositioninginreferencetotheprofileonthetarget.Markingplanesatthesensorrearendassistwiththis,asexplainedinitsinstructions.Adeviationofupto±20degreeswillbetolerated.

Sensorsdetectingthesenseofrotationreversetheirforward/reversesignalbya180°turnofthesensor.Amarkingatthesensorendindi-catestherequiredpositionforagivensenseofthedirectionsignal.

Theallowablegap(clearance)betweensensortipandprofiledependsontheprofilesize(seetable).

Signal output SensorsofseriesA5S…provideasquarewavepulsetrainastheirspeedsignal.Theincorporatedoutputamplifierisstrongenough,topulluportosinkaloadasheavyas25mA(push-pullcharacteristics).Withanyhigherload,specificallyifshortcircuited(tozeroortosupplylead),theincorporatedlimiterrespondsandcutsoffbeforethesensorcansustaindamage.Thus,everyA5S…sensorhastheabilitytotransmitoveradistanceofmorethan500m(1500ft),uptoitshighfrequencyend.FordetailsseeSignalTransmission.

Ifmoreisrequired,aunitD461.11maybeinstalledafter500mtransmission,orinfrontofanevenheavierload,tofeeditadequately.

Signal Frequency Witharegularlydividedtargetprofile(andacorrespondinglyregularoutputpulsetrain)thesignalfrequencyintermsofHzequalsthetar-getspeed(intermsofRPM)multipliedbythenumberofpolesorteeth,anddividedby60.Thisruledoesnotapply,ifthetargetaswheelorshaftisdividedintoslotsorcamswithun-equallength.Instead,theresponsetimeofthesensorshouldbecomparedtotheperiodoftimebywhichtheslotorcam(whateveristheshorter)passesinfrontofthesensorelement,atmaximumspeed.

Whateverthecase,withamaximumfrequencyof12,000Hzandaresponsetimeofmax.40microseconds,anysensoroftheA5S…serieswillserveeveryapplication. Itslowendof0.05Hzallowstheoperationclosetomachinestop.

Signal TransmissionThecharacteristicsofthetransmissionlineisanimportantfactor.Thedatagivenpreviouslyrefertoa3leadsscreenedcablewithaleadcrosssectionof0.5mm2withR<36Ω /kmandC<150pF/m.Thetransmissioncableswesupplyareinconformitywiththis.

ConnectthesesensorsA5S…tothehigh levelinputofourunits(responselevelof >7/<4V).

Toterminatealongtransmissionline,aloadresistorof10kΩeachisrecommendedbetweenthesignalleadandboth+supplyandzero.

Important:Nevertransmitseveraldifferentsignalsunderonecommonscreen.

Keepthesignalcableclearofinterferingsources,anddonotrunitinparalleltopowersupplycables.

Shielding and groundingAlwaysuseanuninterruptedshieldagainstinterferencesbetweensensorandsignalevalu-ation.Connecttheshieldtoground(PE)atthereceivingend.Withatransmissiondistanceexceeding5magroundingatbothendsmaybehelpful.Note:Thesensorbodyandthesensorzeroareisolatedfromeachother.
