Purpose of documentAs a virtual Centre, it is important that the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research has a strong brand; this document provides branding guidance and resources for all members of the Centre.

1.1 Who we are and what we do

The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research is an exciting venture between Asthma UK, leading asthma researchers from universities across the UK, people affected by asthma, NHS partners and other organisations.

The Centre was created to facilitate better treatment and control for people living with asthma through three core programmes of research, which aim to:

1. Encourage good asthma control2. Help to maximise benefits of treatment3. Reduce asthma exacerbations and prevent asthma deaths

This work is strategically supported through five platforms:

1. UK Asthma Observatory

2. UK Forum for Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in Asthma Research

3. UK Database of Asthma Research Volunteers

4. UK Postgraduate Training Scheme for Asthma Researchers

5. UK Methodology Service for Asthma Trials

1.2 Image for the Centre Name

This image should always be displayed in its correct size proportions and should be included in all external and, where possible, internal communications. When using the image, do not change the proportions, distort, skew the image, or change the colours.

For all new uses of this image please consult AUKCAR Central Office, who can provide high quality versions.

1.3 Typography

Calibri font is used on all AUKCAR communications and the website in order to create a uniform apprearance. It is recommended that this font is used in member’s communications, such as posters or meeting agendas, as Calibri is it a clear, commonly used font.

There are also version control and header/footer expectations for Centre documents (please see 3.1).

1.5 Research Structure Image

The below research structure image is used on the AUKCAR website research page as a visual representation of the research we do, and the relationship between the programmes and platforms at the Centre.

This can be used in posters and leaflets for the same purpose. Members who wish to use this image in presentations or on posters can request a high quality version from AUKCAR Central Office.

1.6 Graphics and photographs

Centre members who wish to use graphics in posters or presentations can contact AUKCAR Central Office, which has access to a collection of icons and vector graphics, such as the above.

AUKCAR also has a collection of photographs from each institution involved in the Centre. This includes generic, copyright-free images available to all members of the Centre for use in communications materials.

1.7 Publications: Acknowlegement text

Below is the standard acknowledgement text that AUKCAR members should use on all AUKCAR outputs and on work under the banner of AUKCAR (e.g. publications, posters, slides).

Acknowledgement text for AUKCAR work funded from the Asthma UK grant:

1.9 Press Worthy Activity

Work with the relevant University Press Officer at your institution when writing for press releases, as well as informing AUKCAR Central Office. All press releases should include the standard summary text (see 1.8).

Below is the standard summary text for the Centre:

Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research • An exciting venture between Asthma UK, leading asthma researchers from universities across the UK, people affected by asthma, NHS partners and other organisations.

• The Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research (AUKCAR) is looking to improve care and treatment for people with asthma.

• The directors are Professor Aziz Sheikh of the University of Edinburgh and Professor Chris Griffiths of Queen Mary University of London.

• We have three main research programmes, each with a team of researchers and people affected by asthma working on them. We are constantly applying for new research grants in these areas:

1. Helping people take control of their asthma so they can live full and active lives2. Helping people get the most benefit from their treatment3. Reducing asthma attacks, keeping people out of hospital and reducing asthma deaths

2.2 PowerPoint Presentation templates

Templates include graphics and charts branded in line with the AUKCAR colour palette. Institute specific templates are available.

2.6 Leaflets and Postcards

AUKCAR has a Centre leaflet design aimed at an external audience. Get in touch with AUKCAR Central Office for a copy of the design or, alternatively, printed leaflets can be posted to host institutions. Suggestions for additional content or edits to the Centre leaflets, posters and postcards are welcomed.

Postcards for Patient and Public Involvement can also be made available to all institutions on request.

2.7 Patient Information Leaflets Text

2.10 Public Engagement Activity Posters

AUKCAR ran a very successful activity at the 2015 Edinburgh International Science Festival which involved measuring and plotting the public’s peak flow readings. If Centre members would like to recreate this public engagement event, the poster designs and equipment checklist can be requested from AUKCAR Central Office. Posters include:

3.1 Version Control

Accurate use of version control is strongly encouraged at the Centre, to be included within the framework of a document header and footer. The expectation for all documents in use is the following:

HEADER - Version Number/Date/Document Name

FOOTER - Page Number

For documents in draft:X.X e.g. 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 etc

For documents in version:X.0 e.g 1.0, 2.0, 3.0 etc

Once a draft has been promoted to version, the number must be rounded up to the next whole number. For example, draft 3.4 would be rounded up to version 4.

3.2 Linking to or from the AUKCAR website

Feel free to link to the website. Please contact AUKCAR Central Office in order for reciprocal links to be organised.

3.3 Making the most of being part of the Centre

Taking full advantage of the support available from AUKCAR Central Office is key to making the most of being part of the Centre. With strong links to the press, funding bodies, Universities, journals and the public, AUKCAR Central Office is best equipped to promote and disseminate research and other information for members, as well as assisting with recruitment and a range of other areas in order to support members of the Centre.
