BRANDEIS GOVERNING BOARD 2017–2018BOCA RATON CHAPTER

FROM THE STEERING COMMITTEE

Dear Members,It’s no secret that in the political, cultural and economic chaos of the present moment every level of education is threatened by philosophical ideology and financial restraints. Despite this, Brandeis continues to strive to stay true to its mission and remains committed “to provide the deep, demanding, comprehensive, ethical and intellectual impulse that first brought it into being”, and to find ways to help realize the promise of young students regardless of their ability to pay. We provide overall support to Brandeis University through our donations and participation in Chapter programs while enriching our own lives, and by designating money raised to special campaigns such the Scholarships Fund, Library Fund and Sustaining The Mind: Scientific Research and Science Scholarship Fund.

With this as our goal, it is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the 2017-2018 Brandeis season with the Brandeis National Committee Boca Raton Chapter. By now you should have received our Study Guide and we hope you have had the opportunity to select the groups of interest to you. Additionally we have a huge amount of opportunities in the works for you to enjoy, a line –up of Special Events including our highly successful Annual Book and Author Luncheon and three very interesting Breakfast With Brandeis Programs all available in this bulletin.

We hope you avail yourselves of everything we have to offer, and we look forward to seeing you throughout the season.

Thank you.

BOOK THOUGHTSAnother summer gone but I hope you enjoyed reading all the new releases that came out this year. Our authors for next year’s Book and Author should be great choices. One of our speakers, Andrew Gross has a new novel called The Saboteur which will debut in September. Read and enjoy his book The One Man as well.

One of our past authors, Susan Reiger, published her second novel, The Heirs and it is an interesting depiction of a wealthy New York family and it’s intrigues. J Courtney Sullivan, another of our recent speakers, has written a wonderful new book called Saints for All Occassions. She is truly a talented writer who captures a family and its dynamics.

Lucky Boy by Shanthi Sekaran is a moving story of an immigrant mother and her son as they struggle to deal with all the issues a single mother has to endure. She will be with us in March and I know her book will be controversial as well as riveting . Enjoy them all.

CAPS OF LOVE9 years after our humble beginnings, Caps Of Love charity has been forced to make a major change in the charity direction in order to sustain our organization. As of June 2017 Caps Of Love has provided 70 free wheelchairs and recycled over 193 TONS of polypropylene and polyethylene caps and lids.

Thousands of adults and children across the entire USA have learned very valuable environmental lessons in learning to identify their recycling, humanitarian lessons in giving back in their communities to those in great need, and empowerment of making a change in the lives of others through their own actions.

As you probably know, plastic is a petroleum product. Due to the very low petroleum market in recent years, the recycling of polypropylene #5, and polyethylene #2 and #4 are only bringing in about 10 cents a pound . When the market was at its peak several years ago, we were receiving 26-28 cents a pound! At this very low value it is no longer viable for us to recycle the polypropylene and the polyethylenes at the local level. This ends the sadly unsuccessful search for a donated warehouse, the Home Depot donated boxes ($4.50 each!), pallets, stretch wrap and tape, and endless man-hours from local volunteers processing the plastic for recycling in Tampa.

We will continue the humanitarian aspect of Caps of Love by providing free wheelchairs to handicapped children in the USA by seeking grants and tax deductible monetary donations from our communities.

We will also continue to educate the public on the importance of recycling knowledge and involvement in our communities.

I look forward to great things as we venture stronger into humanitarian phase of Caps Of Love.

Thank you for your support, Valerie Mathieu

I am personally thanking those of you religiously collected plastic caps for this cause and did the Boca Raton Chapter of Brandeis proud to be an amazing participants for this wonderful community project. We will still continue to collect soda tabs for Ronald McDonald House and help sick children and their families.

The tabs are what make “Pop Tab Bracelets”. These unusual, fun bracelets sell for $5.00 to $15.00 and make a real fashion statement! They are the brainchild of a local teenager, Lexi Masciarella. For more information contact: Arleen Roberts at [email protected]

MILK AND HONEY is derived from Israeli folk music and dance with many classic songs (Shalom, I Will Follow You, and many more). New Brandeis research reveals historic U.S.-Israeli tiesPresident Ron Liebowitz presented research from Professor Jonathan Sarna to Israeli Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu

BrandeisNOW

(I to r) Brandeis President Ron Liebowitz, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Consul General of Israel to New England Yehuda Yaakov hold a replica of an 1890s flag from Boston that, according to Brandeis research , influenced the design of today’s Israeli flag.

Dec. 13, 2016

New research released by Brandeis Professor of American Jewish History Jonathan Sarna 75, MA ‘75, shows that as early as 1891, 57 years before the founding of the modem state of Israel, a prototype of the Israeli flag was created and displayed in Boston’s North End that would eventually be one of several significant influences on the present-day flag of Israel. His groundbreaking study titled “American Jews and the Flag of Israel” reveals a rich new chapter in the long history of deep bonds between the United States and Israel that had previously gone largely untold. The research underscores the depth, role and influence the United States played in the earliest days of the Zionist movement. Sarna’s research and a replica of the 1892 versions of the flag was presented to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by Brandeis University President Ron Liebowitz in a meeting with the Governor and Prime Minister in Jerusalem. Specifically, Sarna ‘s research found that Rabbi Jacob Baruch Askowith, a prominent member of Boston’s vibrant Lithuanian Jewish community in the late 1800s, developed a design of the Israeli flag that was displayed as early as 1892 inside Zion Hall on Hanover Street in Boston’s North End. Flags of the same design would later be displayed at the 2nd Zionist Congress in Basle, Switzerland, and then again at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis, Missouri. Its design is believed to have played an influential role and contributed - among other designs from elsewhere in the diaspora and within pre-independence Israel - to the design that was ultimately adopted by the State of Israel. “To think that 57 years before the founding of the modern State of Israel, Americans in Boston were proudly parading a flag so closely reminiscent to the present day version is extraordinary, and is further indicative of the impassioned and prominent role that American Jews, even in the 1800s, had in shaping the future State of Israel.”“As 50 business and academic leaders from Massachusetts join me in Israel to build upon the Commonwealth’s critical economic relationship with Israel - this research reminds us how just how historic and deeply personal our relationship with the State of Israel truly is,” said Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. “I was honored to join President Liebowitz and appreciate Brandeis University sharing these findings while in Israel.”“Brandeis University has deep historic bonds with the State of Israel, beginning with our namesake Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, one of the most prominent American supporters of Jewish statehood,” said Ron Liebowitz, President of Brandeis University. “It is altogether fitting that Professor Sarna, our university’s preeminent expert on American Jewish history, would bring these fascinating findings into the light and continue our legacy of academic scholarship in this field . I am thankful to Governor Baker for inviting us on his mission to Israel, and particularly grateful for the opportunity to share this new research with Israeli government officials during the visit.”
