How we achieved Carbon Neutrality.
Measuring our footprint
Working with the market-leading adviser
on energy and emissions reduction:
CAMCO Edinburgh Centre for Carbon
Management, we have measured
the Brand-Rex organisational carbon
footprint in line with ISO14064, which
includes the compulsory Scope 1 and
2 emissions, but we have also included
voluntary scope 3 emissions.
Our footprint measurement includes all
our operational based emissions relating
to energy use, company vehicles,
product and mail deliveries and waste
as well as our Global organisation
emissions including global office
energy use, travel, accommodation and
delivering products to our customers.
Using 2009 as our Baseline year, the
Brand-Rex Carbon Footprint is 10,172
Tonnes or C02e or 47 grams per metre
of cable manufactured. For the full
report visit: www.brand-rex.com/

environment
What do we mean by Carbon? The Basics:
• Carbon reduction is not all about one
material. It relates to greenhouse gases
(GHG) emissions.
• The term ‘Carbon’ covers a range
of GHG’s: Carbon Dioxide (C02);
Methane (CH4), Nitrous Oxide
(N2O), Hydrofluorcarbons (HFC’s);
HydroChlorofluorocarbons (HCFC’s);
Perfluorocarbons (PFC’s) and Sulphur
Hexafluoride (SF6) to cover the majority.
• Each of these materials can react with
the atmosphere in different ways, and
some have a more damaging effect
than others. In order for us to relate to
a single figure, a factor called Global
Warming Potential (GWP) is used to
normalise the measurement.
• For example Methane’s GWP is 25, so
it is 25 times more harmful than C02.
We use this factor to produce a carbon
footprint result in units of “C02e”. The
‘e’ is for ‘equivalent’, which builds in the
greenhouse gases, their GWP and allows
a common unit in measurement.
Brand-Rex Initiatives: Oil Heating with energy gas
• Fuel oil to gas created 17% reduction on emissions
compared to previous year.
• Modern, efficient heating system allowing more
control over time and temperature. This creates a
more balanced workplace temperature and excludes
the need for fuel oil transport and storage - further
protecting our local environment.
Logistics & Administration
• Paperless invoicing and purchase orders: Sending
and receiving invoices in electronic PDF format
massively reduced our delivery requirements for
mail creating a 65% reduction on emissions
relating to deliveries.
• Less air transport: By opting for the more sustainable
method of transportation by sea, we have been able
to reduce our emissions caused by air freight by 18%.
Brand-Rex Initiatives: Lighting Panels
• Introducing and replacing roof lights in our
manufacturing plant allowing us to put large areas
under automatic light switching. This saves energy
but also creates a better working environment for
our staff.
Investment in Carbon Neutrality
Brand-Rex has invested in Carbon neutrality programmes to reduce our footprint.
The Brand-Rex Carbon Footprint for 2010 is 10,031 Tonnes or C02e or 41 grams
per metre of cable manufactured. For the full report visit www.brand-rex.com/
environment/carbonfootprint
Put simply, every kilometre of cable produced in 2010 was manufactured 13%
more environmentally efficient than in 2009, without this commitment our
carbon demand would have been 11,361 Tonnes of C02e.
For 2011
For 2011, we have even more initiatives underway
to drive this figure down towards our targets.
• Sub-metering allows constant monitoring of
our manufacturing processes and administration
centre. This ensures almost instant awareness to
changes in our energy profile including gas and
water consumption.
• Continued investment in the latest LED lighting,
capable of running at less than 10% energy
consumption levels of standard lights and a
lifespan of more than 10yrs.
• Product life cycle analysis to evaluate the CO2e
emissions related to our top running products
• Develop an environmental receipt for
customer orders
Renewables
We are constantly searching for new and sustainable
materials and methods of creating energy. Brand-Rex
remains committed to utilising renewable energy
sources and supporting the production of material
that has a positive effect of emission levels.
Giving Back – Carbon Offsetting
Carbon offsetting allows firms to demonstrate
an immediate commitment to environmental
sustainability. By utilising this type of
financial commitment and investment,
Brand-Rex can contribute to emissions
reduction projects in developing countries
which in turn can help to improve livelihoods
overseas and provides an opportunity to
engage staff and customers.
For all the carbon emissions created by
Brand-Rex, we have invested in programmes
to absorb the same amount and balance
the figures, thus being Carbon Neutral. Our
heavily researched programmes aim to give
back to geographical areas that relate to our
consumption. Additionally, as a technology
company, we are interested in those projects
that are using good technology as their
basis for re-generation and projects that
are created using the Clean Development
Mechanism (CDM) (http://cdm.unfccc.int/
about/index.html to find out more) and to
an accredited standard i.e. Voluntary Gold
Standard (VGS), Voluntary Carbon Standard
(VCS) (http://www.v-c-s.org/about.html),
Climate, Community and Biodiversity
Standard (CBB) or Pan Vivo.
Brand-Rex uses a large amount of materials,
mainly copper, plastic and packaging,
in developing the latest products.
Therefore, we have chosen to offset our
Carbon emissions into projects that replenish
materials from source, helping to sustain
energy sources using innovative technologies
designed with the environment in mind.
Offset Programmes:
Methane Capture from Landfill, Valparaiso Region, Chile
34% of the world’s copper is mined in Chile
This project captures and destroys methane gas - a powerful
greenhouse gas. The methane is collected from two large landfills in
central Chile and flared to prevent its release into the atmosphere,
producing significant emission reductions. Currently, most landfill
gas in Chile is released into the atmosphere without any treatment
or control. This project showcases methane capture technology and
the great emission reductions that can be achieved with it, with no
negative impact on the environment.
Keban Small Hydropower Project, Elazig Province, Turkey
A large proportion of copper for cable manufacture is purified
and converted into copper rod within this region.
This renewable energy project uses small-scale hydropower to
reduce greenhouse gas emissions by displacing electricity on
the grid produced by higher emission fossil fuel sources. This also
reduces ambient air pollution sources, such as sulphur and nitrous
dioxides associated with fossil fuel combustion.
Biomass Cogeneration, Sao Paolo, Brazil
We like this programme because it helps to offset the operational
emissions generated by fossil fuels.
The project reduces emissions by using woody biomass to displace
heavy fuel oil for heat and electricity production at a Brazilian
pulp and paper mill, and also by avoiding methane generation
from biomass waste products dumped in landfill. This could
additionally re-distribute the heavy fuel towards the plastics
industry, increasing the sustainability.
Our Global Environmental Objectives:
• Work within the PAS2060 framework to measure
and reduce our relative emission year to year
• Minimise our carbon impact by investing in green
technologies and energy efficiency at all our
manufacturing and administration sites
• Work with recognised and accredited agencies to
offset the remaining carbon impacts by investing
in sustainable projects relevant to our business
activities.
• Design our products so that their environmental
impact during manufacture, use and disposal
is diminished.
• Use raw materials, water and energy efficiently in
order to diminish our effect on the environment.
• Reduce emissions, waste and discharges from
our activities.
• Maintain high standards of safety at work for our
employees and encourage sound attitudes toward
the environment in our field of activities.
• Cooperate with our suppliers, customers and other
business partners to achieve higher environmental
standards.
• Work with our supply chain partners towards
sustainable sourcing goals
• Remain alert to new opportunities enhancing
the environmental soundness of our products
and manufacturing methods beyond what is
generally expected

Brand-Rex Initiatives:
Environmentally Conscious Design 10GPlus Zone Cable
Brand-Rex zone cable typically has a 25% less product Carbon footprint
compared to traditional Datacentre cabling. Coupled with improved cabling
density and reduced dimensions, this improves the airflow around the cabling
and racks, helping to improve cooling and reduce energy consumption.
Reduced diameter fibre cables
Not only does our next generation of fibre cable improve the density of fibre
within an installation, these cables have an average reduction of 21% in the
product Carbon emissions.
Product Packaging
305m box improvements
Using modern, non-bleached Cardboard, a 13% reduction in the Carbon
footprint of a box has been achieved. The cardboard has an improved packing
density, to help reduce transportation.
Optimising reels
By moving from an 18” diameter reel to a 16” reel, we have improved the
packing on a pallet.
Instead of the 6 reels, we can now double this to 12 per pallet. This will allow
more products per delivery and reduce the number of HGV journeys and
associated Carbon emissions required to deliver our products.
Recycling
At Brand-Rex, we recycled 6 times more material compared to our baseline year.
By segregating and recycling more, we reduced our waste to Landfill by 40%.
We have recycling schemes for many materials, Including:
Copper, tin, aluminium, general metal, plastics , cardboard and paper
wood and Ink cartridges.
