EXERCISE YOUR MIND Horace Holmes may have had many notable achievements, but there were two which were absolutely unique. What were they? Both relate to his membership of Rotary. 1. He was the first President of the Rotary Club of Warrnambool when it was formed on 20 November, 1929, unusually remaining in office for a second year up to 30 June 1931. 2. He was the first of several District Governors to come. from Warrnambool, holding office in 1945‑1946, when there were only three Districts to cover all of Australia. Holmes was responsible for an area which took in all of West & South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania Northern Territory, and New South Wales south of the Murrumbidgee River. This month: The Warrnambool Standard, 24 No-vember, 1894, contains a detailed description of items for sale at "Stonehenge", Henna Street, the residence of Mrs. St. Quentin. Where is/was "Stonehenge"? DATES TO REMEMBER 1. Wednesday 10 November ::::: 7.3 0 p. m. monthly meeting at TAFE ‑ Guest Speaker Marjorie Anderson: Woodford Primary School Research. 2. FROM THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF AUSTRALIA More than 330,000 Australians served overseas in World War 1. Of these, 61,919 died, about 152,000 were wounded and over 4000 were taken prisoner. Seventeen members of the First AIF died on 11 November 1918, the day the Armistice ending World War 1 was signed. They came from all states of Australia: eight enlisted in NSW, three in WA, two each in Tasmania and Victoria, and one apiece

in SA and Queensland. There was no pattern to their deaths. Some died of wounds, others of ill-ness. Most were single but some were married. Their ranks ranged from Private to Sergeant. Sev-eral had previously been wounded in action. One had been decorated for bravery. Like all other Australian service personnel who died during the war, their names are listed on the Roll of Honour at the Australian War Memorial. The service records of Australians who served in World War 1 are one of the National Archives' greatest treasures. In 2003 the Archives began a project to ensure the future preservation of these records. We are creating a digital copy of each record and making these available for public ac-cess on our website. Some records will not be accessible during this important undertaking. CEMETERY WALKS FOR 2004‑2005 1. Sunday 26 December A 2.30 p.m. 2. Wednesday 29 December B 6.30 p.m. 3. FIRST FAMILIES 2001 The First Families 2001 pilot program, funded by the State Library of Victoria, was designed to draw together stories of Australian families to celebrate the Centenary of Federation in 200 1. This pilot program, with content contributed by the public, became a significant and innovative program mark-ing the Centenary of Federation. In acknowledgement of the contribution of the public to the First Families 2001 program, the State Library of Victoria has provided access to the database via the web in read‑only format for an additional three years from the conclusion of data entry on 31 December 2001. This three year extension ends on 31 December 2004 and following recent changes to privacy legislation and associ-ated implications for First Families 2001, the Mate Library will cease to provide access to the database after this date.
