Valuing our values We reviewed our values during the last year. Our new revised values appear throughout this calendar. Along with our vision and mission, our values are the basis for everything we do. We will use them to plan and review our daily work, and to set the direction for the organisation as a whole. We want to be held accountable to our members in how we uphold our values.

Highlights 2015–16 BEA and OWLS take part in Kirkstall Festival

    July 2017

General Manager’s reportLast year BEA concluded a period of significant transition and it is to everyone's credit that we managed to deliver business as usual whilst making the necessary changes. To put this comment in context I would like to summarise what ‘business as usual’ entails.

We work with people aged 55–105 through two local Neighbourhood Network Schemes: OWLS (Older Wiser Local Seniors, with 300 members in Headingley, Burley, Hyde Park and parts of Kirkstall) and Bramley Elderly Action (1,000 members in Bramley, Swinnow and parts of Stanningley). Members have access to a growing range of 33 regular activities as well as ongoing support, information and home visits.

Since Bramley Lawn social centre opened in Autumn 2014 we have been carrying out innovative and welcoming community development activities such as a ukulele group, Men's Day and Remember Thursdays. Through our social enterprise (UpBEAt) we run Bramley Community Shop which sells second-hand goods and clothes, which now also houses Bramley Credit Union.

Behind the scenes we are involved in a number of initiatives including the development of a Leeds branch of the National Pensioners Convention and a city wide consortium to seek additional resources for older people's services.

With strategic leadership from the Board we will continue to do our best for local older people and the wider community. Well done to everyone who has contributed to the above and the work illustrated in this calendar.

Chair’s reportThere is no denying that the past 12 months have been extremely challenging for BEA. The new staff organisation has been completed and is working well, Bramley Lawn is proving successful and the Board are looking forward to further discussion with Leeds City Council on the future of Bramley Community Centre. All of these initiatives take time and commitment and I wish to thank all the staff, volunteers, Board members and funders for their continued commitment and support; without you the communities served by BEA and OWLS would be much poorer.

The environment in which we work has become particularly challenging. The sterling work put in by staff and volunteers delivers a range of much needed services for and with older people in the West and North West of the city. In contrast to this large remit state support continues to shrink, and it is harder than ever to raise vital funds to undertake this work, even though we can deliver at substantially lower cost and better value than if it were done by public authorities. I would however like to single out Leeds City Council Adult Social Care for their unwavering support and progressive approach. Nevertheless the task of fundraising has become more challenging and I expect this to continue.

We look forward to meeting head on the continued challenges and hurdles 2017 is likely to bring, with the support of our members, staff, volunteers and our funders.

Volunteers Volunteers are involved in every part of Bramley Elderly Action, from making tea at activities to strategic direction, and from designing databases to pressing clothes. We simply could not do our work without our volunteers. We have been very successful in the last year in recruiting drivers. At time of writing we particularly need volunteers to work in Bramley Community Shop.

  • Corporate sponsorsBramley Elderly Action welcomes relationships with corporate sponsors. We would be delighted to discuss what support any appropriate companies can give us and our members.

    Torque Logistics

Torque offered to assist BEA with business advice. As a result, when social enterprise upBEAt was established in 2006, Torque contributed 25% of the share capital. Torque continues to make an enormous contribution. It manages the upBEAt payroll, provides staff time for business support and a member of staff is on the upBEAt board.

    First Bus

First in Leeds help us maintain our minibuses in a groundbreaking link up. They supply fuel, clean our minibuses and give time through a member of staff being on the BEA board.

Many thanks to Torque Logistics and to First Bus for their ongoing support, which is invaluable to our work

Leave your legacyOne way you can support Bramley Elderly Action’s work with local older people is to leave a legacy.

Make a willYou don’t need to be wealthy to make a will. It is the only way to ensure your wishes are met after your death. We strongly recommend that you consult a solicitor about making or changing your will. We will not give you legal advice and do not recommend any specific solicitor. We can give you information to help you find a solicitor.

Make a giftGifts left to charity don’t need to be large and shouldn’t prevent you from looking after your loved ones.

Hold a collectionAn in memoriam funeral collection can be an appropriate way for family and friends to pay tribute, while raising valuable funds. We can also give you information to help you find a funeral director, who can help you make a funeral plan while you are alive, as well as arranging all aspects of the funeral of a loved one.
