We are going to be looking at Jesus’ Apostles, Jesus lived over 2000 years ago and founded Christianity.

Jesus lived in modern day Israel, he was Jewish but rejected some of the Jewish teachings. One of Jesus’ key messages was, ‘love your neighbour as you love yourself,’ which means treat people how you want to be treated and with agape (love).

Jesus’ had many followers and these are called DISCIPLES, whilst he was alive he had 12 key disciples, also called the 12 Apostles. Today we are going to explore about them in a little more detail.

This is an image of the 12 apostles. Their names were: Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, Simon, Jude and Matthias.

Matthias replaced Judas who was one of the original apostles. Judas betrayed Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. After Jesus was arrested and crucified, Judas hung himself as he felt guilty for his actions.

Task: You need to learn a little about each of the 12 apostles. Using the following website to help you: https://overviewbible.com/12-apostles/ in the space below you should briefly explain a little about each apostle and draw a symbol to help you remember each of them.

Christians believe that Jesus will once again come to Earth. Jesus might choose anther 12 apostles to support with his work.

Task: You need to imagine that Jesus has returned and needs to pick his 12 apostles. You need to decided who would be suitable to be an apostle and explain why.

Things to remember/do:

Select 12 living people Provide a brief summary of the chosen person Explain why they would be a good apostle, what skills/qualities do they have Why would Jesus pick them to be an apostle (you don’t have to pick a religious person, it could

be someone who is non-religious) Provide a picture of each person Select a variety of people from different cultures and continents.

Below is an example, but you don’t have to lay it out like that.

I selected Michelle Obama, the former 1st lady of the USA. Michelle grew up in Illinois and after school she studied law and became a lawyer. She supported her husbands’ political career when he was a senator to becoming the president of the USA.

Michelle Obama would be a great apostle because firstly she demonstrates empathy, she is able to put herself into other people’s shoes and understand how they feel. Secondly, she is a great speaker. I have seen her speak many times and every time she does a speech, it’s powerful and moving. Thirdly, Michelle is honest and whilst at times it can be tough to have difficult conversations, she is willing to do them.

I think she would be picked because she is kind, honest and understand how to relate to other people. Furthermore, because her ability to be a great oratorshe would be able to excite others and get them to listen to her. Finally, becauseshe is willing to learn; grow and develop she would take on new ideas to make her a better person.
