Vision:

Braeside Primary School is a dynamic learning community that values diversity and fosters a sense of belonging.

We meet the needs of each individual through collaborative, reflective, and evolving school-wide practices that

provide explicit, engaging experiences. Our students achieve their academic, emotional and social potential and are

contributing members of the community.

All students across the school had a very exciting Friday last

week. Our Student Councillors led a fundraising day for Brain

Cancer, with “Dress as a Pirate Day”. As part of the day they

developed and organised a range of activities for students to be

involved in before school, during recess and at lunch. Our student

leaders planned and coordinated each event. They also

supported all students to participate, encouraging those who were

reluctant and aiding those who were having difficulty. As a group

of school leaders they demonstrated all of the elements of the

PBS Behavioural Expectations at the highest of levels. We all

look forward to next term’s event.

NAPLAN Online 2021

This year our school will be participating in NAPLAN Online for

Year 3 and 5, from 11- 21 May. This will mean that students will

complete the NAPLAN Writing, Reading, Conventions of

Language and Numeracy tests on computers, excluding the Year

3 Writing test which will still be delivered using paper. To find out

more information about NAPLAN Online, visit www.nap.edu.au

Details of test dates will be sent via text message to Year 3 and 5

parents. If you have any queries regarding NAPLAN online,

please contact Mrs Tester.

time of the tests. NAPLAN is not a test that can be studied for and students are not expected to do so. At

Braeside Primary School we prepare students by embedding the skills and knowledge required for NAPLAN in

our teaching and learning plans. Students can see the types of questions and experience the types of skills

both at school and home by visiting: www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site. As

parents you can prepare your students by getting them to bed early and ensuring they have plenty of rest.

Also, as most of the testing commences at 9am, early arrival at school reduces the students stress levels.

Students were involved in a NAPLAN practice test session towards the end of Term 1. In Year 3, students

have been writing Narrative Texts which is one of the possible NAPLAN writing texts that they will have to

write. In Year 5, students have been writing Narrative Texts onto the computer to help prepare them for

NAPLAN.

Below are some student work samples from Year 3 –

One beautiful and sunny morning Cinderella, Jashawa (the mean brother) and Makalia (the mean sister) got

up out of bed, got dressed and rushed down to the kitchen. Breakfast had been made by my mean Nanna.

They always got ice-cream, pancakes, cream, chocolate yoghurt with white chocolate bars and blocks and I ,

well, I just got mouldy eggs on toast with mouldy ham. For lunch and dinner I got the same thing that made me

sick. Then my Dad barged in, he held chocolate drink and ice-cream, they were so happy because they

thought it was for them, but it was for me. To be continued……

Once upon a time two boys were walking in a forest. One boy was named Joe and the other boy is Jaykub.

They were very lonely boys, suddenly as they were walking, Joe found two wolfs so they ran away. The wolfs

were catching up, so Jo and Jakub ran faster, but the wolfs still wouldn't stop chasing them. When the wolfs

were far away, Jo and Jaykub took a short cut. When they took a short cut they lost the two wolfs. They were

so happy that they lost the wolfs, but then they found so many bricks so they were going to build a house, but

then they found a town so they tried looking for a house. They seemed to not find a house, so they just lived in

the brick house that they made. They tried to make a TV so they don’t get bored. When it was night they went

to bed very early because they had a big day.

The following stories are innovations of a different point of view:

One day the little ant was carrying some food for his entire town next to the big boys school The school was

next to a city with lots of people. Then the little ant got some more food to bring it to the town, but then he saw

a big shadow. The shadow was slinking. Then he saw a hug boy with his shoe lifted on top of the little and

the boy said that he was going to crush the ant flat because his friends said to do it. Then the ant said to the

boy to not crush him and that the town needed him and that he’s the best worker. Then the boy let the ant go.

One sunny day an ant was waiting by the path. Suddenly the ant saw a tall boy and he said “Hey big boy

please don’t squish me”. The boy said “I’m going to squish you, but if you go right now I will leave you”. But

the boy would not leave the ant alone. The ant said “What if I grow 50,000 time my size and squish you”?

Then the next day the boy got to be a millionaire and built a huge tech suit, then he saw him and squished him.

Cross Country training

Our focus for School and Interschool Sport this term is Cross Country. Miss Collins is offering before school

running club each week from 8.15am. Selected Students will also participate in a regional event at Narrogin

on the 28th May. Miss Collins and a group of parents will be transporting students to this event.

School Board

Thank you to all parents who voted for our new School Board members, we had a very high responsive rate.

David Harries and myself counted the votes last term and our new representatives attended their first meeting

last week. Congratulations to Hayley Godfrey and Melissa Tasarip for winning the positions on the School

Board.

This term as part of GENIUS time we

went on an excursion to visit the

Police, Ambulance and Fire Brigade.

They explained what they do and

how they help the community. We had

the chance to ask lots of questions and

we learnt many new facts about each

place. We also got to explore the

vehicles and try out some of the

equipment. To finish off our excursion

we had lunch and a play at the All

Ages Playground. It is safe to say that

we were all feeling exhausted by the

end of the day. Since our excursion, we

have developed inquiry questions about

the emergency services around

Australia and the world. We will be

investigating these throughout the

term and look forward to discovering

more about our questions!

Colds

Upper respiratory tract infections or colds are everywhere, especially in winter, so it is almost impossible to stop children from catching them. Here are some points which may help:

Teach your child to cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing, and to wash hands straight afterwards. (Sneeze into elbow if unable to wash hands without help).

Hands should be washed after blowing noses and before eating.

Use tissues once and then throw them in the bin. (Avoid using handkerchiefs.)

Keep your child home from school if he/she has a cold/cough/fever/pain.

Make sure that your children eat a balanced diet of plenty of healthy foods.

Keep children away from smoke – it irritates their eyes and nasal passages, making it more likely that they will catch a cold. What to do if your child gets a cold No treatment will cure a cold or make it go away more quickly, but you can help your child feel more comfortable:

Rest: This need not be in bed. Provide extra drinks: If your child doesn’t want to drink much, try giving lots of small sips of water,

milk or juice, or ice blocks to suck for older children. Germs are spread easily to classroom staff and other students. Keep your child home if your child

cannot;

Cover his/her nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing

Wipe his/ her nose independently

Wash hands without help

The canteens last operating day will be Thursday 3rd June. (end week 7)

Thank you to those who supported the canteen, it was greatly appreciated.

If you have a credit on your flexischools account on that last day, please use the below address and it will help you with closing your account and getting a refund.
