CENTRAL SPORTING PARTNERSHIP Senior Girls 7-a-side Football League Round One Denny High School-Thursday 20th Sept

Our Senior girls’ football team opened their season in atrocious weather at Denny High School. It never stopped raining throughout the evening but the damp weather didn’t prevent the girls from making a bright start to their campaign. We finished runner-up last year to the all conquering team from St. Mungo’s HS and they were just one of a number of notable absentees from these opening fixtures.

St Modan’s HS 0-0 Braes High

Opening fixture of the night and we made our notoriously slow start. Chloe Penman had our first effort at goal which was well saved by the keeper and unfortunately that pattern was set for the rest of the game as the keeper made three great saves to keep the score-line blank. We squandered one or two other chances and might actually have lost it near the end when St Modan’s made a rare break and nearly scored. Not a bad start though!

Bannockburn Hs 0-5 Braes High

Score-line didn’t stay blank in this game for very long as Taylor Watson made it 1-0 within seconds of kick-off. Chloe Penman scored a fine solo goal, a super first time pass (or was it a mis-control?) from Sammy Burns allowed Rebecca Read to score, which was followed by another before a slick passing move between Taylor and Rebecca allowed Taylor to complete the scoring.

Dunblane HS 0-1 Braes High

Dunblane could be the dark horses of this year’s competition. They have a really big strong team and we did really well to cope with them physically and then hit them on the break to score the only goal of the game. Taylor collected the ball wide on the right in her own half then drove up-field beating two players, looked up and crossed for Heather Young to score. Super goal preceded by super football.

Heather makes it 1-0 vs Dunblane High School

Balfron HS 1-2 Braes HS

We played some excellent football in this game and scored two good goals through Heather and Taylor to put us comfortably in the lead. Megan Bardsley made her only save of the night in this game which showed how well we performed defensively. We did somehow manage to concede a late goal from a seemingly impossible position but we didn’t panic and held on for another good win.

Wallace HS 0-1 Braes HS

By now everyone just wanted to go home and warm-up, so no surprise this wasn’t the best game of the night. Suffice to say Heather scored to give us the win and Rebecca won the prize for hitting the ball well over the bar-the fence-the playing fields-in fact it might even have cleared Denny itself!

Some people just instinctively know where the camera is!

A really good start to the league season. Some excellent football played on a terrible night against some big strong teams. We looked quite good defensively (apart from that one odd goal) and when we moved the ball quickly we showed that we might be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

ROUND TWO

St Aiden’s HS or Turnbull HS Vs Braes High School To be played by 17th November 2012

CENTRAL SPORTING PARTNERSHIP S1-3 Girls 7-a-side Football League Round One Denny High School-Thursday 27th Sept

The opening round of fixtures in the junior girl’s 7-a-side football took place at Denny High School and our girls made a good start which could have been even better but for some odd decisions in some of the later games.

Bo’ness Academy 0-2 Braes High School A long range shot from Kerry Monro and a fine solo effort from Melissa Brisbane saw us comfortably win the opening game. We played some good stuff and managed to control most of the game.

St Mungo’s HS 0-0 Braes High School We somehow managed to scrape a draw out of this game against last season’s champions. Our opponents had us pinned in defence for long spells but couldn’t score and we might have sneaked it on the break near the end.

Opposite- Kerry Monro opens the scoring against Bo’ness Academy. Above-Becky Morley and Kirsty Macleod put pressure on defence

Balfron High School 0-4 Braes HS Our best display of the night. Melissa Brisbane opened the scoring with a super shot on the volley after a neat one-two with Kerry. Hannah Ironside tapped in number two and Kerry added another couple to complete the scoring.

Wallace High School 2-0 Braes High School We thought we had opened the scoring when Melissa tapped in a quick corner from Kerry but the Stirling girls complained they weren’t ready and we had to retake. They cleared and went up-field and scored. Not surprisingly we lost our way a bit and Wallace scored again near the end.

Bo’ness Academy 1-0 Braes HS We were still trying to get over the decision from the previous game and were never really in this game, but looked like we had escaped with a draw when the final whistle blew. Our match official decided to play some extra –time though and we lost a goal right at the end.

Denny High School 0-2 Braes High School Denny scored an own goal from one of our early corners and then Melissa Brisbane scored another fine solo effort to give us the win. St Mungo’s and Wallace High battled it out last year for the title and look like they could be close again. We played really well throughout (apart from the second Bo’ness game) and possibly deserved better than we achieved on the night

Courtney Bissett (left) Megan Pullar (middle) and Kerry Monro (above). Chloe Wickstrom (below) clearing the ball.

Andrea Walker(S3) is in the Scottish Golf Academy Programme.

“I was nominated for the Scottish Golf Academy Programme Talent Identification by Elizabeth Goodwin- the County Girls Junior Secretary. On the 9th July 2012 I attended a regional Talent Identification Day at Brucefields Family Golf Centre. The assessment day was supervised by Gregor Monks one of the Academy Golf Coaches. I was assessed on all parts of my game putting, short game and long game. We played the wee course where we had to hit the greens using 3 balls at each hole and record the results. The putting was tested from different distances again all the results were recorded. We then moved onto the long game and we had to hit targets at different distances results were recorded. I was quite nervous being the only girl there. If we were successful we progressed to the National Talent ID Day at St. Andrews 25/26 August 2012.I was really happy I made it to St. Andrews my date was 26th August 2012. I was nervous because I was there with all the really good girl golfers from all over Scotland. My mum and dad and wee brother Cameron came along to support me. Parents were not allowed to watch though. When we started at 9am parents were given a presentation telling them what the Academy was all about. We were split into groups pairing up with another girl we marked each other’s results for each of the assessments this was like Brucefield putting short game and long game but more detailed. Kevin Craggs the National Coach was supervising my group -he was really good and tried to make us feel relaxed. It took 4 hours to complete the assessments and we were all really tired after-words. St. Andrews was brilliant, the sun was shining the whole day; it was a new experience for me to hit shots from links turf. Cameron practiced his short game for 4 hours that helped mum and dad because they were more nervous than me. I think I did fine on the day but I am never too confident. I found out on Monday 3rd September I had made it into the Scottish Golf Academy. The girls who didn’t make it into the Academy will attend a development program to help them and hopefully they will get the chance to progress next time. I attend an induction at the Sport Scotland National Golf Centre Inverclyde from 21-23 September 2012, this is a residential event I am looking forward to it. I am very lucky to get into the Academy and I will work hard on everything that is expected of me. The FGC Ladies have been really nice to me and encourage me. I appreciate everyone’s support it means a lot to me.”

County Girls Championship 2012 Stirling and Clackmannan County Ladies Golfing Association held their girls’ championship at Falkirk Golf Club and what a weekend it was for 15 year old Jennifer Allan of Glenbervie.

Underfoot conditions were very wet following all the rain there has been his year but this proved no barrier to Jennifer. She won the stroke-play championship with a gross 81. Runner up was Andrea Walker of Falkirk Golf Club with an 83. Andrea won the handicap prize with a net 74 (83 – 9). The CSS was 73 Qualifiers and draw for the Matchplay championship were: Jennifer Allan (Glenbervie) 81 v Beth Donoghue (Alloa) 93 Andrea Walker (Falkirk) 83 v Catherine Goodwin (Glenbervie) – 91 In the Sunday morning semi-finals Jennifer beat Beth 2 and 1 and Andrea beat Catherine 3 and 2 to set up a final between the two leading qualifiers. Andrea was probably a slight favourite around her home course and took an early lead in the final but Jennifer squared the game at the 7th and then went ahead with a birdie at the 8th. Andrea levelled the game at the 12th but when Jennifer won the 14th and 15th to go 2 up there was no way back for Andrea and Jennifer ran out winner by 2 holes. The final was played in a most sporting fashion with the losing semi-finalists caddying for Jennifer and Andrea. Thanks are due to Falkirk Golf Club for the courtesy of the course over

the weekend to hold the Championship.

14th September 2012 The Highland Spring Junior Masters, the biggest grassroots golf event in Scotland, got underway yesterday at Auchterarder Golf Club with some fine play on show. Run in conjunction with ClubGolf, Scotland’s national junior golf development programme and assisted by the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association, the Highland Spring Junior Masters is free-to-enter for boys and girls aged under 16 on 1 January 2012. Perthshire club Auchterarder hosted the first of the four qualifying events, including a packed, indeed oversubscribed boys' draw of 79.

In the girls’ draw, Falkirk’s Andrea Walker was a familiar face at the head of the finishing table. A year ago she won the Highland Spring qualifying event at Turnhouse in Edinburgh. At Auchertarder, she finished level pegging on 38 points apiece with West Kilbride’s Louise Duncan but the Falkirk girl won on count back. “I was hoping to qualify but I didn’t think I was going to win, so to win two years in a row feels really good,” said Walker, who is coached by Kevin Craggs and has made a handicap leap in recent months. “I’ve been working hard on everything, particularly my putting which is much better and helped me today. I started the year at 19 handicap and I’m now 12.”

“On Friday night I completed the ‘Moonlight Sponsored Walk’ with Asda colleagues and friends from the Falkirk store. We walked 10 miles starting at 10 pm at the store and finished around 1am on Saturday morning having completed a circuit around the Falkirk area. The sponsored walk was in aid of ‘Tickled Pink’ the Asda nominated charity. It was great fun to be part of it and I got to meet other Asda colleagues as well as supporting Cath Stewart, Asda Community Colleague to raise valuable funds for this fantastic charity. Most of the people who completed the walk were women who were dressed up in various pink outfits from pink ‘tutu's, to pink feather boas, hats and t-shirts. My mum tried to get me to wear a ‘to-to’ but I managed to get away with a pink t-shirt!!! The photographs show you some of the walkers and also some of the fun that we had on the night. Fingers crossed that it’s raised lots of money!”

“Having finished the sponsored walk at 1am I had a few hours sleep and went into the Falkirk store on Saturday morning to help raise more funds. Cath had organised bag packers however I helped promote ‘Tickled Pink’ bingo cards, dabbers and badges. The prizes were really good and we were lucky enough to have someone who won something in the store. I really enjoyed meeting all the different people who gave donations for the charity and it was really humbling when some of them shared their own personal stories of how Cancer had effected their lives or that of friends and family. This is when you realise how important these charities are and the difference that they make to people’s lives.

It’s the start of the Scottish Table Tennis season and I have my first Edinburgh league match this week so fingers crossed the team does well as it would be nice to win the league again. However that’s a long way off. I will keep you up to date with how things are progressing in the meantime its back to training and homework!!!”

coach and he invited me to come along and train with that squad. This involves 3-4 training sessions a month with the squad and from this training I have been picked for the Junior Men’s team for the Tri-Nations in Wales at the end of this month.”

“I started water-polo a year ago when my swimming club started a team. I volunteered to play in goals and I decided I enjoyed playing in that position. During the Easter holidays of 2012 I attended a joint training session with Dunfermline Water Polo Club. Dunfermline has been playing water polo for 30 years and their goalkeeping coach invited me to continue training with him on a Sunday night. He helped me develop my goalkeeping skills to a higher level. During the summer holidays I was attended a summer camp run by Scottish Water Polo and one of the first coaches I had was the Scotland Junior Men’s Coach

Braes High’s Senior Boys team have recorded their first victory at home against Denny High School. After only two training sessions and with little rugby experience the Braes’ boys did themselves proud. With only four of the starting line up playing club rugby, Braes did extremely well to emerge 44-29 winners over more experienced opposition. The match was a scrappy, fierce and unstructured affair played in good spirit by both teams. Braes took an early lead through Marcus Williamson as early pressure and ball retention in the opponent’s 22 paid dividends. The try was converted by Euan Cassells.

More tries followed in quick succession with touchdowns from Calum Rennie, John Stewart, Lewis McKay and Myles Howieson all crossing the whitewash. These quick successive scores allowed Braes to storm to a five try lead at the interval. The second half saw the switching of Braes’ players to Denny High as they were short of players. Early pressure and poor defence from Braes High lead to Braes pupil Calum Rennie touching down under the posts for Denny This spell of Denny possession continued as they began to build the phases and scored another three tries without a Braes response due to poor defence. After a team talk Braes regrouped and began to play some sensible Rugby.

Braes were spurred on by the vocal home support and some well executed running rugby lead to tries by John Stewart and Andrew Leadbetter converted by Euan Cassells. Denny’s response was immediate with pressure on the Braes’ defence however Braes stood strong and solid defence held out. Poor handling from Denny lead to a counter attack by Euan Cassells and Phillip Campbell. The ball was recycled and passed wide to Johnathan Wilson who crashed over for a try in the corner. Report Euan Cassells/ Pictures Erin Petrie

The game ended with Braes emerging winner’s by44-29. Next Game Vs Larbert High School-Monday 29th October Well done to all those involved.

The First Year Boys returned to Basketball for their lunchtime challenge

and class 1/1 retained

the trophy. The girls moved on to trampolining and

class 1/6 accumulated the most points from the judges.

CENTRAL SPORTING PARTNERSHIP Senior Girls 7-a-side Football League Round Two Wallace High School October

Another miserable night weather –wise and with only seven players due to a variety of reasons, it proved to be a struggle. Braes High 1-0 Bannockburn High We are notoriously slow starters and it looked like we would have to settle for a draw before Rebecca Read scored. Up until that point we had huffed and puffed but couldn’t break down the opposition defence and unfortunately that was going to be the story of our night. Braes High 0-1 Balfron High Don’t know how we lost this game. Sammy Burns hit the post, we missed two “sitters” and then got caught with a sucker blow right at the death and boy, how our opponents celebrated. Balfron did work really hard to deny us time and space but the end of result was a sore one! Braes High 2-0 Wallace High This game highlighted the importance of scoring first. Taylor Watson scored after only ten seconds-Wallace again claiming they weren’t ready but this time the official told them to get on with it. Taylor scored again shortly after and we managed to relax. Braes High 0-0 Larbert High Another frustrating game. We didn’t create a single scoring opportunity despite having lots of possession and as our frustration grew, we left ourselves thin at the back and Larbert could have scored on a couple of occasions. Only five schools turned up for this round of fixtures and despite having lots of space available the organisers insist on playing on narrow pitches-frustrating night all round.

The first Sports Captain’s trip was to the opening event at the Commonwealth Arena in the East End of Glasgow. Re-named The Emirates Arena after a £10M ten year agreement, it is the new home of the Glasgow Rocks Basketball team and they played host to the Newcastle Eagles. Opening days are fraught with anxiety and no-one was sure just how this one would go as the Arena only officially opened to the public the previous day. Built for the 2014 Commonwealth games it will host the badminton and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome will host the cycling.

First impressions: It is a mightily impressive complex. The cycling in the Velodrome is guaranteed to be a sell-out and every seat gives a superb view of the action. The first thing that hits you is the heat-but the atmosphere will be great, with spectators’ right on top of the action.

The main sports hall doubles as a 200m indoor athletics track and the venue where the badminton will take place.

The tip-off was delayed for twenty minutes due to the large crowd, we then had the obligatory power cut and chaos trying to get out of the car-park but these teething problems couldn’t detract from an enjoyable day. Newcastle came back from 13 pts down before the power cut to win comfortably by twenty points at the end. Next trip: Wigan Athletic VS West Ham Utd

Jodie Crawford from Shieldhill has won her most important title so far when she won the Pony Newcomers Championship at the Horse of the Year

Show at the NEC in Birmingham.

Inspired by fellow Scotsman and Olympic gold medallist Scott Brash’s win in the previous night’s Sky Sports Trophy, Jodie snatched a win in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers Championship with the piebald pony Birchgrove Tiger Woods.

“I saw Scott go last night and thought, this is what I want to do,” said Jodie, who is in her final year if pony competitions. “The atmosphere is amazing and this is my biggest win so far. Hopefully there will be more to come.”

Jodie won with a double clear and a time of 37.79 in the jump off, having been fastest in the first round as well. Birchgrove Tiger Woods has been brought on by Jodie over the past two years assisted by lessons from Douglas Duffin

Shieldhill horse-rider Jodie Crawford was named BlueChip Best Newcomer at the Horse of the Year Show in Birmingham at the weekend. As the only Scottish Junior in her category, she was riding Birchgrove Tiger Woods who she has almost single-handedly reared to competition winning standard. Crawford took Birchgrove on just three months after it was broken and has found success on the horse and on Moorepark Flash who she took to Birmingham last year. The Braes High pupil is now leaving full time education to concentrate on her career riding and training horses. She’d like to thank two supporters in particular-International Timber Ultrabed and Winning Transport. Falkirk Herald October 11th

Christopher Wheeler heads for the Serbian Junior and Cadet Open

Christopher Wheeler was a member of the 'Werner Schlager Academy Hotspot Team' which initially practised at the Werner Schlager Academy (WSA) in Vienna under the watchful eye of Richard Prause. The team then headed for the Serbian Cadet and Junior Open which started on 3 October

Absent from the international scene since hosting the ITTF Junior Circuit Finals and Cadet Challenge in October 2006, Serbia returns. Tomorrow in Vrnjacka Banja starts the 2012 Serbian Junior and Cadet Open.

There are 99 boys and 100 girls listed. The competitors coming from Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, England, France, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Malta, Montenegro, Romania, Latvia, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Switzerland, Thailand, USA, Wales, Sweden.

Among national teams there is one new name: Werner SCHLAGER Academy Hotspot Team. They will have debut in Serbia. Scotland’s Christopher WHEELER, the Czech Republic’s Tomas POLANSKY and KANAK Jha from the United States will play for the boys’ team; for the girls it will be Romania’s Andrea CLAPAA, Thailand’s TAMOLWAN Khetkuan and PRACHI Jha from the United States. The group is practising in Vienna under the watchful eye of Richard PRAUSE; Tamara Boros will be the coach on duty in Serbia for the team.

It is a motivated group of young players and clearly Richard Prause is highly motivated Richard Prause Impressed “I will be happy to meet them there and see them competing in this highly interesting competition”, he added and he is impressed with every member of the group The sport needs a challenge to the current strength of Asia, the might of China; the Werner Schlager Academy Hotspot Team is planting the seed from which the challenge can grow Certainly Christopher Wheeleri has impressed Richard Prause; “He is good in rallies, good at counter top spin play”, said the Head Coach. Scotland’s answer to Wang Liqin, the master counter top spin player

The Werner Schlager Academy Hotspot Team; an outfit formed following the initiative of Mikael Andersson, the ITTF Executive Director of Teaching and Training, who three years ago initiated a network of Hot Spot Training Centres of which the Werner Schlager Academy is the shining light. The Complete Package In conjunction with the International Table Tennis Federation, the necessary backing is available, world class coaches are on duty with vast reservoirs of knowledge. There is a full support programme; the end result is that talent can be identified, nurtured and developed. The formula for the goals to be realised is in place and one other goal has already been achieved; that of showing initiative. The initiative is the Werner Schlager Academy Hotspot Team. The WSA Cadet Boys’ team lost in their final.

The talent is there, it does not matter which country is in question the talent is present; the task is to identify the talent, nurture the talent and develop the talent. However, in order to fulfill those goals, knowledge must be available, initiatives must be shown and there must support whether caring, financial or otherwise. Equally there must be a burning desire to succeed, a will to win, strength of character. Add all these factors together and the result is the Werner Schlager Academy Hotspot Team, a team that will make its debut in the city of Vrnjacka Banja on Wednesday 3rd October 2012. Members of the team will compete in the Serbian Junior and Cadet Open, the next stop on the ever growing ITTF Junior Circuit. The Team Scotland’s Christopher Wheeler, the Czech Republic’s Tomas Polansky and Kanak Jha from the United States will for the boys’ team; for the girls it will be Romania’s Andrea Clapaa, Thailand’s Tamolwan Khetkuan and Prachi Jha from the United States. Currently the group is practising at the Werner Schlager Academy (WSA) in Vienna under the watchful eye of Richard Prause; Tamara Boros will be the coach on duty in Serbia for the team. Motivated Group “We are very happy to have these promising young players as the ITTF/WSA Hot Spot Team practising at the WSA; they have been staying with us for about two weeks and after participating in Serbian Junior and Cadet Open some members of the group will return to Vienna in order to prepare for the World Cadet Challenge in Guam.”

ROUND ONE

KIRKINTILLOCH HIGH SCHOOL 4-11 BRAES HIGH SCHOOL

Our Under 16 Boys Football team opened their Scottish cup campaign with a potentially tricky visit to face Kirkintilloch High School. With no warm-up games in preparation, the coach was hoping the team would quickly gel together, particularly with a couple of new faces in the line-up. Not to be though, as we got off to the worst possible start losing a goal in the opening seconds and the rustiness was there for everyone to see. However as the game progressed we began to show glimpses of the attacking prowess that was evident throughout last season and scoring opportunities began to present themselves at regular intervals.

Man of the match Peter McGinley was on exceptional form despite being on the receiving end of a number of poor challenges. The team continued to play football in the correct manner and providing they tighten up a bit defensively should have a good run in this competition. On the score sheet and in no particular order were Gregor Monro, Mark Scott, Peter McGinlay, Jordan Paterson, Mark Bennie and David Churchill

Round Two Versus Turnbull High School (Home)

Under 15 Boys Scottish Cup Basketball Braes Under 15 Boys start with a resounding victory versus Falkirk. Braes opened up their Scottish Cup basketball campaign with an emphatic 80 v 25 defeat of Falkirk High School last Thursday. Considering the team had not played since March this year it was a great achievement to play so fluently. Ryan Weir top scored with a massive 41 points, however, there were also excellent performances from Euan Miller who won an incredible amount of rebounds and Jamie McNie who contributed 11 points and a large number of assists. The boys are looking forward to playing Larbert and Broughton in their remaining league matches.

TABLE TENNIS

TAYLOR BARDSLEY (S4) has been included in the Scotland Under 15 Girls Basketball squad. The Scotland U15, U16 and U18 Women National Squads were named yesterday after a tough trial last Sunday Fourteen players per age group have been selected to take part of the basketballscotland’s National Squads & Teams programme. With 42 U15s/U16s, and 35 U18s athletes trialling on the day, and a competitive National League season so far, the coaching teams had high expectations. Alister Vannet, U15 Girls National Squad Head Coach commented: “We are looking for players who have got a lot of potential, who are willing, who are committed, and who are looking to apply themselves. You don’t necessarily need to be the best player but you need to be looking to develop because at this age group there’s still a lot of development left in the players.” Each of the 70+ basketball trialists was tested on their physical and technical abilities, from shooting and footwork to offense, defence and 1v1 situations.

The three squads will join together at a weekend camp in Stirling at the start of January. Scotland Under 15 Girls will be preparing for The United World Games tournament in Klagenfurt, Austria at the end of June after a home friendly in Stirling. Scotland Under 16 Women will travel to Lorca/San Juan, Spain for a training camp to prepare for their FIBA Euro C competition in July. After two home friendly matches in June, Scotland Under 18 Women will head to Luxembourg for friendly competition at the end of June. Following some final practice sessions the squad will travel to FIBA Euro B Championships taking place 15-25th August in Miskolc, Hungary.

Lucy Ferguson, Aria Pascual and

Emma Eaton (s1) (JKAWFS) achieved

joint 3rd place in 11 years girls Kumite. After a lot of hard training and squad sessions in preparation, JKA Karate Do Shotokan (Scotland) junior squad members travelled to Paris France as part of the JKA Scotland Squad to take part in the JKA Junior European championships.

The Scottish FA initiated their Performance Schools project in August 2012. This scheme will consist of a network of seven schools throughout the country. The programme is designed for elite young football players, both boys and girls, and will run from S1 to S4. The young players will have football development activity every day in the school and will aim to improve the individual players through a programme of technical and game awareness activities. There will also be a strong sports science support given to the players. As an alternative, Senior Football Clubs have also introduced a day release programme for players within their youth set they have identified as having the potential to progress to senior levels. Two boys from our school are involved in this day release programme at present.

Euan McMillan 2/1

Rangers F.C.

“The day release programme is a great opportunity to progress and become a professional football player, as it improves on a variety of different skills which you need throughout the game” “At day release I do a number of different passing and shooting drills and I also work on the skills required to beat an opponent and then get away from them. Throughout the passing drills the coaches also help you work on checking off your man when the player takes their touch and is ready to pass to you. These are things that you need when you are playing in a game, and which are very important if you are to become a player with Rangers.” “ We also do work with the physiotherapists including stretching, balance and agility work before the first session in the morning and then after the second session in the afternoon”

Sean Brown (S4) is part of the 16’s/17’s day release programme at Dundee United. Every Thursday he works on his handing, footwork, shape and the basic principles of positioning. “We already train 3 nights per week for 2 hours at a time. Strength and conditioning sessions are also built into this time”

Gregor Monro (S4) has been included in the South East Region Under 16 Select. Gregor was selected on his performances for his club side Syngenta, where he has been outstanding in both defence and midfield this season. The select team has a heavy schedule of games against top opposition coming up in the next few months.

Neil Highlands has been included in the Forth Valley Under 15 Schools Squad for this season’s Inter-Area Competition. Forth Valley are in Group 4 along with Lanarkshire, Glasgow and West Lothian. Expectations are high for this squad as it is littered with players from the SFA Academy based at Graeme High School, so Neil has done extremely well to be selected for this squad.

“Thursday’s are spent training at St Andrews University playing fields working on all the above elements. Every player in the 16/17’s squad will be working hard at these sessions to impress the coaches as full-time contracts for next season might be a possibility”

The second Sports Captain’s trip was to the Wigan Athletic Vs West Ham United Premier league game. Early morning start for this trip-leaving school at 8-30-which was too early for some of the participants. Cracking day weather-wise though and only needed one stop before arriving in Wigan shortly before 1 o’clock

The DW Stadium is situated next to a retail park so finding something for lunch was quite easy and then on to the game. Not the biggest stadium in the Premier League-it holds just over 25000- but every seat gives a perfect view of the action and ours were behind the goal. Wigan always tried and play football-passing on the ground and keeping possession whenever possible and West Ham provided the opposite extreme-trying to find Andy Carroll with a longish ball in the air.

As the game progressed the home team were well worth their two goal advantage-the first being an absolute belter- but they ended up holding on a bit in the last fifteen minutes as they settled for what they had. Once West Ham scored it set up a nerve wracking last few minutes. Thanks to Mr Cunningham’s navigational skills we managed to get out of the car park and back onto the motorway in no time at all and the journey home passed fairly quickly. Great day out.

A really good day out. Our thanks to Wigan Athletic Football Cub for making it possible. Next trip Scotland Vs New Zealand Rugby Union.

Our S1 Boys Basketball team played St Mungo’s High School in a warm-up game before they started their Scottish Cup games. Despite having worked hard in training, this was their first competitive game and as such you are never quite sure what you are going to get. One thing we do know is that we have quite a few tall athletic individuals.

Braes started well with Jordan Ferguson showing a good touch round the basket, helped by Nathan Williamson and Ramsey Reynolds in the guard positions. In the second quarter, 6ft2" Andrew Campbell dominated under the hoop as Braes continued to rack up the points and working hard on defence. Role players Sandy Robertson and the Scott’s -White and Lothian - also added depth to the squad.

Guard Alfie Cannan had a good spell when combined with Ferguson and Campbell, with Braes running away eventual winners 55 -7. Top scorers were Ferguson on 18, Campbell on 16 and Cannan on 10.

A tremendous result for the boys in their first game with all 12 players contributing to the win much to the delight of the coaching dream team 'JETE', Mr Duncan and Mr MacWhirter. BRAES S1 Basketball Team. J.Ferguson, S.Campbell, A.Cannan, R.Reynolds, N.Williamson, S.Robertson, D.Dewar, S.Lothian, S.White, J.Heggie, L.Skelly, J.Kerr

S1 Scottish Cup Basketball: Braes Boys Bulldoze Bathgate.

The boys hosted Bathgate in their first ever Scottish Cup match and went into the game missing two key players; Alfie Cannan (Haircut) and Daniel Dewar (Dentist). After a prolonged warm-up, the game got under way with a blistering start from Braes. Jordan Ferguson dominating the first quarter and putting his team 14-0 up heading into the second, where the Braes found the going a little more tough and missed too many easy chances around the basket as well as gifting the opposition the ball on many occasions.

18-2 up at Halftime, Coach Duncan gave a rousing team talk and the boys got back to business in the third pushing the lead out to a tremendous margin and finally winning 44 -5. In a great team performance, Jordan Ferguson was top scorer with 20 points - including an end of 3rd quarter 'buzzer beater' - Andrew Campbell had 12 points, with James Kerr, Calum Winning, Sandy Robertson, Nathan Williamson and Scott Docherty also making it on to the score sheet. Well done boys!

Next Scottish Cup Game Versus Craigmount High School-Edinburgh (away)

The third Sports Captain’s trip was to watch Scotland play New Zealand at Murrayfield. The visitors always attract a capacity crowd and this game was no different and we got a unique perspective on the game from our pitch level seats.

New Zealand showed why they are the World Cup holders in the first half by playing with lots of width and doing the simple things really well and at speed. Our ground seats did give us an excellent view of the two tries that Scotland did score, but apart from a late rally near half-time they were well down having made too many errors and given away quite a few penalties.

Scotland played much better in the second half and seemed to enjoy far more possession and territory but turnovers at the crucial moments brought an end to a number of promising situations. When New Zealand stepped up the gears they looked as if they could score at will-and they did. Comfortable win in the end for the visitors-but they are the best in the world!

Another good day out. Don’t know if there is a good place to watch rugby from-you get spoiled by the TV coverage and the close ups of the action. Our seats did allow us to get really close to the Scottish Olympic athletes who did a lap of honour at half-time.

Under 16 Boys Shield - Sponsored by Lloyds TSB Scotland-ROUND TWO

Braes High School 7-1 Turnbull High School (Bishopbriggs/Glasgow)

The Braes Under 16 football team strolled into the 4th round of the Scottish Cup with a convincing 7-1 win versus Turnbull High School. This was despite two call offs on the day leaving the team with only 12 players for the game. Despite this the team played some fantastic football and were good value for their win. Jordan Paterson again showed his strengths in front of goal scoring four goals.

Peter McGinlay rounded off an excellent performance with 2 very well taken goals. Mark Scott gave his usual excellent performance in the middle of the park working tirelessly and hitting the woodwork on a number of occasions. However the goal of the night goes to Liam Harvey who valiantly chased down a pass back only for the keeper to kick it against him and for the ball to bounce straight in.

Round Three Versus

Boroughmuir HS or

Newbattle HS (Home)

UNDER 15 BOYS SCOTTISH CUP BASKETBALL BRAES HIGH SCHOOL 92-15 LARBERT HIGH SCHOOL

The braes under 15 basketball team have started the season in fine form winning all 3 games in their group stage of the Scottish Cup. Their first game came against Falkirk High who have named themselves the 'Basketball Academy' for the Falkirk region. The boys were far too strong for their Academy opposition and comfortably won 85-20. The team performed excellently well defensively offering great help defence when required and broke very quickly up court to pile on the points. There were a number of standout performances. Ryan Weir top scored with 41 points and Euan Miller won a tremendous amount of rebounds.

Finally the boys played Broughton High School away and won 113-2. Again the team were very professional despite the weak opposition and stayed focussed on defence as well as ensuring they kept the points board ticking over. Ryan Weir scored an excellent 55 points. The team now move onto a much tougher game in the last 16 where they will meet one of Portobello, St Thomas of Aquins from Edinburgh or Stewarts Melville. Two of these teams have won against us previously so some big performances will be required in order to reach the quarter finals.

The 2nd game was against Larbert where the team won 93-15. It was obvious our team were more experienced but went about their jobs very professionally. Andrew Buchan scored a career high 18 points and managed to get into some excellent positions close to the basket.
