The Changing Face of Brady Road Resource Management Facility (Brady Road Landfill) Water and Waste Department Future Plans New Facility for Processing Recyclables A new, larger facility will be built to process all the materials, more than 50,000 tonnes per year and growing, from blue recycling carts. Green Business Park Land is being reserved for a future green business park, which will host companies that reclaim and reuse materials that would otherwise be buried in the landfill (e.g., electronic waste).

Recent Improvements

Composting Pad for Leaf and Yard Wastesince October 2013

A new nine-hectare compost pad (about the size of 11 football fields) receives material to turnall the leaf and yard waste from the curbside collection program into thousands of cubic metresof nutrient-rich compost.

Capturing Methane Gas since August 2013

A new system to capture and flare landfill gases:

� reduces the annual greenhouse gas emissionsfrom the landfill by an amount equivalent to thatproduced by about 21,000 cars, and

� helps reduce landfill odour.

Birds of Prey on Patrol since 2011

Falcons and hawks are on the job tohelp reduce the number of seagullsand geese that feed at the landfill andcreate a nuisance in the surroundingneighbourhood.

Recycling Wood since 2011

Wood Anchor, a reclaimed lumber and wood products company, rescues ash trees, diseased elmtrees, and old lumber and transforms them intonew products (e.g., furniture and flooring).

Improved Litter Fencing since November 2013

We have added 500 feet of portable fencing whichcan be moved, depending on the wind direction,to keep litter (e.g., plastic bags) from blowing outof the landfill.

DEPOT

New Complex to Start Composting Biosolids in 2014Biosolids, the nutrient-rich end productof sewage treatment, are valuable as anatural fertilizer. This new complex will:

� span 3 hectares (about the size of 4 football fields),

� compost about 20% of the more than50,000 tonnes produced each year atour three sewage treatment plants,

� produce over 300 cubic metres of compost per week for use as a finalcover at the landfill to enhance vegetation growth, and

� have a biofilter for odour control.

Coming Soon

The First 4R Winnipeg DepotOpening in Late 2014This community depot, the first of four, is new to Winnipeg. The Brady 4R Depot is 5 hectares (about the size of 6 football fields).You will be able to drop off materials that can be resold, recycled, composted or reused, such as:

� large household items (e.g., furniture), � household hazardous waste,� construction and demolition materials,� wood,� metals,� electronic waste, and� yard waste.
