PREFACE
A knowledge of such simple words and phrases as will suffice atourist to get his immediate needs sati.^tied, the greater proliciencythat enables a man t(3 conduct some si>ecial business, and the com-plete familiarity that ptrmits him to express all his thoughts aseasily in some other language as in his own, are three very distinctdegrees of linguistic accomplishment. In a book so small as this, it
would be impossible to aim at assisting the traveller or student tomore than the tirst, but it is hoped that the ordinary tourist willhere tind all that he requires.
The plan of the work (in which convenience rather than logicalform has been adopted) will be readily a.scertained by turning tothe Contents page, and the figures giving the cross-referencesfrom one section to another will be of considerable assistance infinding the word or expression required. Careful attention shouldbe paid to the rules of pronunciation tabulated below and to thevarying forms of expression noted on page 43. The polite form ofaddressing a person in Italian is "Ella" or "Lei," " Voi" is used incommercial style and in familiar conversation.
Rules of Pronunciatiox.
Vowels (vocali). Generally speaking the vowels are long or shortaccording to the tonic accent, for example :
—a = a in father, e.g., padrelong e (accentuated) = a in bathe, e.g., beneshort e (unaccentuated) = e in better, e.g., tendai = i in linger, e.g., ditolong o = o in note, e.g., nomeshort o = o in not, e.g., nostrau = u in full, e.g., nide
The consonants (consonanti) are pronounced—roughly speaking—in the same way as in English, excepting :—
c or cc before e and i = ch in chill, e.g., cena, ciboc or cc before a, h, o, u = c in cast, e.g., casa, eccolog before e and i = g in German, e.g., generog before a, h, o, u = g in garden, e.g., galerar is strongly pronounced similarly to the r in the Scotch dialect
Every effort has been made to secure immunity from error in thislittle work, but the best thanks of the publishers will be given toany who will draw their attention to whatever inaccuracies mayhave been overlooked.
