ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS
2008-2014 Assistant Professor of Architecture, University of Florida, Gainesville FL
2008-2014 Graduate Research Faculty, University of Florida, Gainesville FL
2009, 2012 Vicenza Institute of Architecture, Vicenza, Italy
SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES My assigned departmental duties in the School of Architecture involve teaching design studios, teaching
support coursework, creative research, and service. Over the past six years, my teaching duties averaged
79.8% of my assignment, my creative research averaged at 9.2% of my assignment, and my service
responsibilities constituted 11.0% of my assignment. My position is a 9-month per year, tenure-track
appointment.
TEACHING My normal semester teaching load includes two scheduled courses in addition to serving on Master’s Research
Project (MRP) committees and Master’s Thesis committees. I also serve as Honors Thesis Advisor for fourth-
year undergraduate students, have advised University Scholars, and have served on a Capstone Project Review
committee for a student enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Sustainability and the Built Environment
(B.S.S.B.E.) degree program.
Design studios are the core of the School’s pedagogical structure and are heavily weighted in both credit hours
(4-6 per course) and in contact hours (8 hours per week in the first year and 9 hours per week starting in the
second year of undergraduate studios). Most non-studio courses are 3- or 4-credit hours and involve 3- to 4-
contact hours per course. I have taught both courses in our Materials and Methods sequence, Educational
Teaching Methods, and Analytic Drawing and Sketching.
My typical teaching assignment involves teaching two design studios in the fall and two studios in the spring.
My assigned teaching over the past six years has averaged 13.9 contact hours per semester and 9.3 credit
hours per semester, excluding work on Masters Research Project (MRP) or Thesis committees. I have served as
chair of 28 MRP/Thesis committees, as co-chair of 12 committees, and as a member on 1 committee.
In addition to my 9-month per year appointment, I co-teach the 6-credit Sustainable Planning and Design
Studio that is a central component of the Master of Sustainable Design degree program. This course involves
weekly studio meetings, on-line web-based sessions with students working remotely, and field work in
Singapore. I have taught this course summer 2011, summer 2012, summer 2013, and spring 2014.

RESEARCH My current research is centered on high-performance zero-energy buildings, within a broader context of social,
artistic, and cultural production. This highly focused work engages building science, thermal/energy modelling,
climatic responses, and materiality.
My research into these issues to date has centered on three funded research projects: Solar Living House 01
(Solar Decathlon 2015), Quinlivan Passivhaus, and Project Re:Focus (Solar Decathlon Europe 2010). I am
serving as Principal Investigator on the first two of these projects and as Co-Principal Investigator on the third.
My work has been supported by a $236,233 in external funding and $13,500 in internal funding.
In addition to this project-related work, I formalize research findings through presentations at academic and
professional conferences. Recent presentations include those to the Association of Collegiate Schools of
Architecture (ACSA), the Association of Architectural Educators (AAE) in the United Kingdom, the American
Solar Energy Society (ASES), and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). These typically involve blind, peer-
reviewed abstracts prior to presentation. My work has been subsequently published in refereed conference
proceedings.
My work with high-performance buildings and sustainability also engages the education of architects and
practice. As a result, my research extends into teaching methods, pedagogy, and visual communications. My
written work on these subjects has been subjected to peer-reviews, presented to peers through conferences,
and included in numerous refereed publications, including those of the National Conference of the Beginning
Design Student (NCBDS) and the Design Communication Association (DCA). My written work has been
included in Representations, the peer-reviewed Journal of the Design Communication Association.

SERVICE My service activities support the academic missions of the University of Florida (UF), College of Design,
Construction and Planning (DCP), and the School of Architecture (SOA). These activities allow me to contribute
to the mission of shared governance in a substantive way. I currently serve as the elected Chair of the University
of Florida Infrastructure Council and as a member of the Senate Steering Committee. These are key roles at the
University; I serve as one of only five Council chairs. I am a member of the Land Use and Facilities Planning
Committee and a member of the UF Graduate Student Teaching Awards Committee.
Over the past six years, I have served on an average of 1.5 committee or council positions per year at the
University level, 2.8 per year at the College level, and 10.5 per year within the School of Architecture. In total, I
have completed 89 committee assignments and elected positions during the last six years, averaging 14.8 total
assignments per year.
I serve as the Faculty Councilor to the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA), am the Faculty
Advisor for UF’s chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and am the Intern
Development Program (IDP) Education Coordinator for the University of Florida and the National Council of
Architectural Review Boards (NCARB). In 2013 and in the years leading up to it, I served as a part of our NAAB
Accreditation Team. I helped organize and mount our exhibit and assisted in hosting the visiting team. As a
testament to our program’s strengths and the work of the NAAB preparation team, our professional Master of
Architecture program was granted an eight-year term of accreditation, the longest term possible.
Outside of the University, my service includes work as a Chapter Director for the Gainesville Chapter of the
American Institute of Architects (AIA). I presently serve as the Chapter’s Vice-President / President-Elect, and
will serve as the President of AIA Gainesville in 2015. I serve as a member of journal editorial boards, as a peer
reviewer for conferences, journals, and publishers, and as an invited guest critic on studio reviews.

decisions regarding work to be included in the Journal. 10 The Journal of Architectural Education in South Asia (JAE+SA) is a newly-created publication developed by M. Saleh Uddin, Ph.D. and others. It has received
