et’s face it: a big part of the reason many of us go so bonkers for the holiday season is to ensure our children have plenty of time with family, presents and other reasons for joy.

We asked young students, ranging in age from four to eight, about their wishes for the holidays, theories about Santa Claus (how he keeps

busy in the off-season, for example) and other revelations about holiday experi-ences and hopes for this season.

The kids interviewed attend public and Catholic elementary schools through-out the area.

Here’s what they had to say:

WISH LISTS“My brother has a big list but I have a little list. Ten things, I think.”

– Daniel Ponte, 4

“One thing… I forget.”– Gabriel Murray, 5

“We make sweets. We do things that makemanners to God.”

– Shyam Sridhar, 6

“First there is God and you have to pray. You have to sit and look at the people dancing. You eat good food. They have beautiful stuff (clothes). We have to stay with them (family) and we see our friends. We play with them.”

– Dylan Patel, 5

DIWALI

“I light the menorah every day for eight days. The first day of Hanukkah, I have a feast.”

– Charlotte Rosset, 6

HOLIDAY PLANS

“My dad really needs his own laptop. For my mother next Christmas, I have 36 dollars and 36 cents. I’m looking forward to buying a nice iPad for my mom because our old one broke.”

– Shyam Sridhar, 6

“A new Lego set (for my brother). He always says if he had money in his life, he’d have 20 Lego sets.”

– Charlotte Rosset, 6

“I’m giving (my sister) a couple of things. I’m let-ting her borrow a couple of things from my room. My medals I won — two for hockey, two for tennis, one for soccer. I told her she needs to bring them back in three sleeps. She just gets one a day. She borrowed other things, too. I’ll let her borrow a couple of things that are very delicate so she won’t break them.”

– Lucas Julhasz, 5

“I wish for my brother to go to a good university. He would have a good job because if he has a good job when he’s older, he might have a lot of money and he might marry someone fit for him.”

– Chloe Kim, 8

GIFT GIVING AND HOLIDAY WISHES FOR OTHERS

HELPING SANTA LOSE WEIGHT“He should eat vegetables — broccoli, okra, kale, lettuce and maybe some pumpkin and exercise. He should do running, push-ups, burpees, sit-ups and should do weight lifting and book reading.”

– Eric Shen, 6

“Instead of flying door to door, he could walk to everyone’s house. Instead of having children leave him cookies, he could ask for salad. He could ask the elves to made a treadmill for him so he could exercise.”

– Nina Thompson, 8

St. Cecilia Catholic Elementary School student Daniel Ponte ponders his answer to one of our holiday questions.

HOLIDAY MEAL“Maybe broccoli, cauliflower, pork and some eggs and some chocolate milk, even some okra for my mom and brussels sprouts and a little casserole, and maybe pizza with plump cherry tomatoes and sweet basil and, for dessert, I would want pine-apple and a bowl of ice cream. It is mango, cookies and cream and chocolate — three flavours.”

– Eric Shen, 6“We are going to California when it is Christmas.”(Question: Have you been to California before?)“Not every day.”

Bradford’s 17th annual BWG Carrot Fest was deemed, as it usually is, a big success.

The family-fun weekend filled with hun-dreds of vendors, live entertainment and food annually features the CarrotFast 5km charity run, pro wrestling event, Ontario

DockDogs competition and much more. With such a popular event bringing in

people not only from Bradford, but other surrounding areas as well, Carrot Fest was voted one of the top 100 events in the prov-ince by Festival & Events Ontario for the fifth year in a row.

Though many of us are used to the main

festival taking place on a Saturday, organizers decided it was time to shake things up a bit.

Earlier this summer, council agreed to extend Carrot Fest into a main two-day event, adding Friday night to the roster. The change brought on a unique feel to Carrot Fest, allowing sponsors of the festival to set up booths near the Village Inn after 6 p.m. The extra day also featured live entertain-ment, the always-popular beer garden and a midnight madness sale — encouraging downtown businesses to keep their doors open late.

So what will happen next year? Will Friday night maintain itself as the opening event for Carrot Fest?

Of course, says organizer Joe Lotto.“Friday was a great success for us. We

didn’t really know what to expect since it was the first time we had done it,” he said.

“We tried to make sure to program a lot of local talent for that day and it worked out very well. We plan on continuing Friday’s events next year and for years to come.”

Lotto also says there will be a few more exciting changes coming for Carrot Fest, though he can’t share a complete list just yet — a few things will stay under wraps until the New Year, when details are finalized.

But, he did give The Topic a peek into what he is certain will be brought forth in 2016.

“We definitely are trying to change a few things up on the Saturday, but we will also be keeping a lot of the same things,” he said.

“We are working on different forms of entertainment to keep things fresh. One thing we’re adding is a second stage-like space for the local art community, to con-tinue to highlight local talent. That will be in the courthouse parking lot.”

Though the downtown revitalization com-mittee maintained the midnight madness event, which was not something Lotto was involved in, he says it would be a welcome idea in the years to come if businesses would like to take part.

As for the amount of vendors, Lotto says he would like to keep the number – roughly 300 – around the same, though it could be a little less next year depending on space needed for added entertainment.

His goal, however, is much bigger than just two days of Carrot Fest.

“I’m always hoping that one day it can be three days, but you never know when that could happen,” he said.

“It may be sooner than we think.”

THE ROAD AHEAD

Look for Carrot Fest to build on success of 2015

Van Loan gets different viewBy Simon [email protected]

The 2015 federal election marked the changing of guard on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Gone are the Harper Conservatives and in are the Trudeau Liberals.

While York-Simcoe MP Peter Van Loan didn’t suffer the same fate as many of his Conservative colleagues, he will spend the next four years in opposition without the perks of being in cabinet.

Even though Van Loan won the riding, he says he has felt a sense of loss from the campaign. He had to move out his office and say good-bye to several staff members that opposition MPs aren’t afforded.

For years, Van Loan has been one of Stephen Harper’s key lieu-tenants, holding important posi-tions in cabinet including Minister of Public Safety, Minister of Inter-national Trade and house leader, so it wasn’t a surprise when he was tabbed as critic for Canadian Heri-tage and National Historic Sites.

Van Loan cited Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations and the future of the victims of com-munism memorial as important issues he will be focused on in the next year.

It remains to be seen what role Van Loan will play in the upcoming Conservative leadership race. He said this contest will be much dif-ferent than the 2004 race that saw Stephen Harper named leader.

“I think it will be a good dynam-ic race,” he said. “The more disap-pointed contests are the ones that

are coronations.”Aside from his critic portfolio,

Van Loan said he will have an eye on the Liberals’ handling of the economy and taxes in the years to come. He cited the income tax hike to individuals making more than $200,000 and reduction in the annual deposit limit in Tax Free Savings Accounts as Liberal policy changes that, he says, will have an impact on many of his constitu-ents.

Changing demographics in York-Simcoe also might present a challenge to Van Loan in the next election.

The outgoing house leader was one of the few Conservative MPs in the 905 area to hold on to their seats. He defeated Liberal challenger Shaun Tanaka by 6,000 votes.

“The 905 is very much a swing vote. The suburbs of Toronto and Vancouver are critically important in deciding elections,” he said.

The Conservatives were white-washed in Mississauga and Bramp-ton and only managed three seats out of 10 in York Region.

While Van Loan said the sup-port at the door was similar to prior elections, the biggest differ-ence this year was some residents declined his overtures with greater enthusiasm than usual.

Van Loan’s margin of victory dropped from 23,000 votes in 2011 to 6,000. While the margin dipped, Van Loan said it was still significant and that losing Innisfil in the riding reconfiguration in 2012 cost him some votes.
