... or - if you’re picking this up in advance or afterwards - welcome to the programme for Bradford Threadfest!

Threadfest started out in 2011 as a way to join up some of the independent live music activity that happens in Bradford. It was aimed at University students and emerged from the Arts on Campus depart-ment and my role as Fellow in Music.

Those of us involved in it knew that Bradford has an exciting and distinctive live music scene but that it can often be hard to find out about and access. On the one hand that’s the exciting thing about underground music scenes - they take a bit of digging to appreciate - but Bradford’s a hilly place with lots of nooks and crannies and it felt like a push in the right direction wouldn’t do any harm.

Over the last few years Threadfest has grown to become of national attention with people travelling from far flung corners of Yorkshire and the UK to get a taste of what’s going on in Bradford. The Guardian, The Wire and The Quietus have been particularly supportive about the festival, listing us as one of their high-lights. It was hard work, but very rewarding and it’s been amazing to see people come out to the city in droves on (mostly) sunny Bank Holiday weekends for a free feast of live music and art.

Now we’re in our fourth year we’re trying something a bit different and bringing it all under one roof at Bradford Playhouse. This’ll give us a bit of a breather - much needed, but we couldn’t bear to have a year off! - as well as make it easier for you to experience the diversity of activity on offer as part of the festival.

What can you expect to see at Threadfest 2015?’In terms of bands we have some incredible visiting acts this year including Circle from Finland, Sir Richard Bishop from America, Jooklo Duo and Father Murphy from Italy and Arabrot from Norway as well as homegrown bands with international reputations including Threadfest stalwart Richard Dawson, Michael Chapman, Vision Fortune and Drunk In Hell. There’s a ton of new and ex-citing bands too including The Wharves, Big Love and Lord Adonis alongside some Bradford legends like Hameed Brothers Qawwal, Dean McPhee and The Family Elan. There’s too many favourites to choose from so check out the artist profiles inside as well as well as info on our partners that include Fuse Art Space, Golden Cabinet, Total World, The Live Room, Voltage and more.

We also have a programme focusing on live art produced by Art in Unusual Spaces and including Rehana Zaman,Laura Milnes, Luke Drozd and the infamous

Dusty Rhodes, who will be providing contributions, interventions, workshops and performances of a discreet and not-so-discreet nature throughout the weekend.

Bare Plume Cafe are providing ethical-but-not-boring food and cocktails to keep you refreshed and refuelled throughout the weekend as well as the excellent Bradford Playhouse bar working with the recently born Bradford Brewery for a special Threadfest ale.

A massive thanks to our partners who have helped the festival happen, espe-cially James Islip from Recon/Lumen and Jono and Claire Gadsby from The Brad-ford Playhouse. Big thanks for the contin-ued support of University of Bradford and City of Bradford MDC. We hope you have an excellent weekend and remember that there’s loads more to explore and find out about in Bradford year round. To help you on your way we’ve created a ‘Beyond Threadfest’ section to this publication.

See you down the front!

Andy AbbottThreadfest Director and Fellow in Musicat University of Bradford.

Bradford has always be central in our musical world. It, and more specifically the 1in12 club drew in diverse malcontents from the UK and beyond (us included), creating a space where politics, art and music cross pollinated and fired out in a hun-dred different expressions. It was the meeting point of multi-ple networks of friends and allies, bands, distros, labels, zines emerged and built links with networks of similar autonomous centres across Europe and beyond.

Those strong bonds built part of a wider web which helps keep the potential of amazing / creative / inspiring things happen-ing alive.  Reclaiming music and culture from the professionals / elite is now more important than ever.  DIY has never been so possible and it’s ace to see it thriving. Threadfest is a bril-liant celebration of the diversity and depth of this. We are dead proud to be playing a small part in it.

Alec of Mwstard

Threadfest 2015 continues to showcase the diverse and pro-gressive spirit of the DIY underground music scene. The festival provides examples of local acts/musicians as well as UK and foreign exponents of some of the best independent music currently being produced. Long may it continue to enrich Bradford’s music heritage.

Gary Cavanagh

The 2015 Threadfest lineup evokes memories of the legend-ary 1in12 festivals of the mid 1990s. A time that (aside from by a few dinosaurs that inhabited the bar floor of the club) was celebrated as a true meeting of artistic minds under the banner of hardcore, punk and DIY in the north of the UK.

Rob of War All The Time

Bradford’s DIY music scene makes the area one of the most open minded and supportive places you can play in the UK. I had my first solo gig here supporting The Family Elan and despite my reputation in this town for my equipment being a bit wild, I keep getting invited to come back and it’s always a pleasure. Looking forward to finally seeing Richard Dawson play at Threadfest this year.

Art in Unusual Spaces is a Community Interest Company based in Bradford and Leeds. We programme the use of public, underused and temporary spaces by artists. We believe that art and culture are sites for experimentation with new ways of thinking about, and experiencing, the world and act as a first stage in helping people engage and make positive transformation to their lives and surroundings.

In 2014 we programmed an art strand as part of Bradford Threadfest in a temporary gallery in Oastler Market called The Dark Matter Institute. This year for the condensed version of Threadfest we are happy to include three elements: an exhibition of prints by Drew Millward and Ben Holden at The Sparrow Bier Cafe; commissioned and invited performances as part of Threadfest that will occur on the Priestly Lounge bar area; and guest comperes for the acts performing upstairs in the Playhouse as part of the festival. You can also pick up a copy of Javaad Alipoor’s The People Want pamphlet that was developed from his commission as part of Threadfest 2014.

BeN hoLdeNBenjamin James Holden is a designer and musician from Bradford. Has been heavily involved in the local music scene for many years, being in bands and putting on gigs, and initiated ‘No Hands’; a local collective / zine / club night / gig and general consensus to make good things happen. Previous work has included posters, fanzines, record sleeves, logos, magazines and festival branding. Ben has been responsible for the design for The Mirrored Hammer and associated projects including the branding for RECON Festival and Bradford Threadfest. His favourite things are typography, screenprinting, loud music and ale.

As part of Threadfest 2015 Art In Unusual Spaces have asked a number of artists working with live art or performance to come up with a piece as an intervention in the bar area of the Playhouse. These pieces are designed to be come across as much as they are observed from start to finish but keep an eye and ear out for exact timings so as not to miss out!

Bradford sCratCh orChestra

Bradford Scratch Orchestra is an open musical group, for players regardless of skill level, for-mal musical knowledge or instrument played. They meet every Monday at 7pm till 9pm for participant-led improvisation at the Tasmin Little Music Centre on the Bradford University campus. The group is open to non-students and students alike, people of all ages and any musical back-ground. Participants are invited to bring some-thing to play (it needn’t be what would tradition-ally be classed as an instrument) or come along and use what instruments are available (piano, upright bass, electric guitar and bass, percus-sion). For Threadfest BSO will hold an informal drop-in workshop in the bar area that will give a taste of some of the exercises and approaches they use for collective improvisation.

rehaNa zamaN

Rehana Zaman is an artist producing perfor-mance, video and text based works which examine the possibilities for agency within social structures through both the invention of fictions and the exploration of individual accounts of isolated moments in history. Her recent work includes Some Women, Other Women and all the Bittermen; a fictional soap opera about a corporate takeover from the perspective of its employees collided with documentary frag-ments filmed by and about female migrant work-ers from the self led organisation Justice for Do-mestic Workers Leeds (J4DW Leeds). Rehana will be producing a new work for Threadfest 2015.

He has been drawing pictures since around 2004. Drew likes to draw ‘the old fash-ioned way’, using pencils, pens and a love of the craft of illustration. While his subject matter can vary dramatically, he hopes that the attention to detail and the love of drawing is apparent throughout his work.

He has exhibited throughout the US, UK, Europe and beyond, as well as having the pleasure of creating work for an ever growing international client base.

We’re very lucky in Bradford to have individuals, collectives, organisations and venues putting on great and distinctive live music and art week in week out - many out of the goodness of their heart and a pas-sion for both the music and the city. On the surface it can be a bit tricky to find out about but once you have a way in there’s all sorts to explore from alternative rock nights at The Mill, to Ethiopian folk singing at The Latvian Club, to head-cleansing power electronics in temporary galleries on North Parade and community centres in Shipley, to qawwali nights in shisha lounges, to jazz and folk nights in Grade II-listed business centres. In this section we have given a glimpse of some of the people and plac-es that are helping make Bradford’s music and arts scene so characterful. It’s far from a comprehensive list but hopefully it’ll lead to you finding out even more. Also worth checking out for anyone interest in Brad-ford’s music scene local music historian

Gary Cavanagh’s Bradford’s Noise of The Valleys publications. Gary’s spent countless hours digging back through the archives as well as interviewing local musicians and promoters to start to document the city’s

rock and pop scene from the 50s to the current day. As Gary points out, despite having some notable and pioneering acts,

Bradford’s never had a ‘sound’ attached to it in the same way other cities have - there’s no Bradford equivalent of Merseybeat or Madchester or even the ‘New Yorkshire’ tag that was applied to Leeds and Sheffield in the mid 2000s. Bradford can’t be that eas-ily pigeon-holed; it’s too diverse and poly-morphous. If anything does join Bradford’s music scene together it’s less a sound and more of an attitude and an ethos; one of collectivism, co-operation, passion and graft in the face of adversity. Pick up a copy and find out for yourself, or even better, get involved in shaping the Bradford music scene of today!

For Threadfest 2015 we will be using multiple spaces across The Bradford Playhouse. Situated in the historic and architecturally stunning Little Germany area of Bradford the playhouse has a long and rich history as a cultural venue for all manner of activities including theatre, music, film, art and performance. As well as The Main Auditorium which was a fantastic venue for the headline gigs of previous editions, Threadfest 2015 will also open up new spaces including The Burnel Rooms and The Priestley Lounge Bar area to accommodate the diverse range of styles and atmospheres of this year’s festival
