SAS Recognition Week
4th September - 8th September
Week 8 this term is SAS Recognition Week.
Without our SAS staff, our school would not
function as well as it does. SAS stands for School
Administrative Staff and includes our office staff,
school learning and support officers (SLSOs),
our general assistant, and our Aboriginal Education Officer (AEO).
These members of staff are highly valued by our teachers, students and the
community and I would like to take this opportunity to thank them all for the
tireless work they do at Braddock Public School. From the smiles and positive
greetings every day at the front desk, the one on one support for specific stu-
dents, the collaboration with teachers and parents, the general maintenance
and beautification of our school - nothing is too hard or too much trouble for
each of these members of staff. They do their job with a smile on their face,
with enthusiasm and dedication as they are proud to be a part of the Brad-
dock School community, and all have a passion to work as a part of a larger
team to ensure excellence, opportunity and success for all of our students.
Our SAS staff are
Office - Mrs Jackie Smith (office manager), Mrs Julie Berrier, Mrs Nikki Rawl-
ings
Library - Mrs Lyn Blahut
BELL– Mrs Lee Dunn
Aboriginal Education Officer - Ms Lisa Holt
School Learning and Support Officers - Mrs Robyn Clarke, Ms Ashlea
Holt, Mrs Yvonne Cookson, Mrs Jody Sloane, Mr Corey Kovacs, Mrs Roanne
Jack, Mrs Danielle McGillicuddy.
General Assistant - Mr Terry Brockhoff.
Be sure to say a big thank you to our SAS staff, as an acknowledge-
ment of all of the work they do.
Please Remember... Our car park is staff only

TELL THEM FROM ME
WE WANT YOUR FEEDBACK! In the coming weeks parents and carers will be invited in to the school to participate in the Tell
Them From Me Partners in Learning Survey. This is an online survey. The surveys will be conducted
at Braddock PS from Monday 28th August (Week 7, Term 3) to Friday 13th October 2017 (Week 1,
Term 4). Parents and carers can do this from home or at school.
All parents and carers who participate in the Tell Them From Me survey will go in the
draw to win a $250 Woolworths voucher. Stay tuned for how to participate.
1. What is the Partners in Learning parent survey?
The Partners in Learning parent survey is part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys on student
engagement. The parent survey helps to clarify and strengthen the important relationship between
parent and school. The survey is designed to measure, assess and report insights from the parent
point of view, at the school and system levels. The focus of this NSW survey is on student wellbeing,
engagement and effective teaching practices.
2. What kind of questions will the survey ask?
The survey questions aim at understanding parents’ perspectives on their child’s experience at
school, including teaching, communication and the school’s support of learning and behaviour. The
survey also aims to understand parents’ perspectives on activities and practices at home related to
their child’s learning. The survey will ask parents questions about:
Parent forums We will also be conducting a number of parent forums, where we will be randomly selecting parents
and carers from all grades to come in and give their feedback on our school. These forums will be
conducted in groups of 8-10, and they will be facilitated by Ms Chris Brooker, a former principal who
works closely with our school. These forums will take place on Tuesday 5th September. Invitations
will be sent out on Monday week 7.

Macquarie Sports Netball Clinic
On Wednesday 9th August the school senior netball players were invited to attend the Macquarie
Sports Netball Clinic at Jamison Park Netball Courts. We had a great day in the sunshine learning
alot of new skills by participating in six different activities. Our coaches on the day were six past and
present netballers including Liz Ellis and Catherine Cox (previous Australian Diamond players and
now Netball commentators), Paige Hadley (NSW Swifts and Australian Diamonds), Amy McCulloch
(NSW Swifts Captain), Amy Sommerville (NSW Swifts) and Taylah Davies (Greater Western Sydney
Giants).
All students had the opportunity to ask the coaches questions at the completion of the day and were
all lucky enough to be given their own netball to keep. This was made even more special as each stu-
dent was able to meet the coaches and have their ball signed!
The clinic was a great opportunity and we look forward to seeing all the skills the students learnt on
the netball court in the future.

In term one 3/4D wrote to you to tell you that 3/4D was the spot to be, not only due to the excel-
lence of our work, but also due to our positive attitudes and team work. Well, as we move through
term three we are proving this more than ever as the quality of our work continues to be amazing and
our positive attitudes remain outstanding as always. This term we have been super proud to have
earned multiple possum awards for our behaviour in assemblies and we continue to lead the charge to
keep our school environment clean as the Braddock garbage busters (although this is getting tougher as
more and more students and classes take on the call to arms to care for our school environment).
In literacy, we are continuing our focus on Roald Dahl with whole class literacy sessions focusing on the
short novel turned picture book, The Enormous Crocodile. We have really enjoyed exploring the con-
nections between the text and illustrations, in what we think is one of Dahl’s better books. While we
are on the topic of Roald Dahl, red and blue literacy groups have begun their own interest projects
based upon the life of Dahl and are currently completing a variety of tasks ranging from Power Point
presentations to children’s books and even speeches to show their knowledge of Dahl’s life and books.
We are all excited to see their published work and begin our own projects.
As always, we have so much going on not just in the class but outside of it and it would be remiss of us
not to mention the great fun we have had at our forensic and road safety incursions, where we got use
to evidenced based approaches to solve a crime and to drive min-cars and learn about being good pe-
destrians. Finally, we had an awesome time during education week and at the book parade, even if Mr
Dukes couldn’t win his dinosaur race against Mr Hall!
In 3/4D we welcome all parents and helpers so if you would like, feel free to drop in.
We look forward to seeing you “in the spot to be” 3/4D!
3/4D STILL the spot to be!

After the success of our STEM activity with our parents during education week, students in 5/6T have
enjoyed completing a couple of additional STEM challenges throughout the term. Not only do these in-
corporate a number of science, technology, engineering and maths skills, processes and concepts, it also
allows students to creatively express their ideas, work collaboratively in small groups and engage with
their learning with a hands-on approach.
5/6T made catapults out of paddle pop sticks, skewers, rubber bands
and bottle tops that could launch a marshmallow. But that’s not
all….students had to launch their marshmallow 5 times, measure the
distance and record their data in a table.
Class 5/6T has also been attending music lessons with Mr Baker this term. They have created rhythms
using mini-beasts, experimented using drums, and have learnt about chords while using keyboards.
Through music, students learn to: focus, stay in time, follow a beat and listen to one another .

Stage Two STEM Afternoon.
As part of 2017 Science week, Stage 2 (years 3 and 4) teach-
ers and students welcomed parents and carers into our class-
rooms to participate in a hands-on STEM (science, technolo-
gy, engineering and maths) afternoon. The afternoon com-
menced with a yummy sausage sizzle enjoyed by Stage Two
students their parents, carers and the teachers.
With the sausage sizzle as fuel, students and helpers were
tasked to become engineers in a world where the only build-
ing materials available were balloons and sticky tape. Every-
one had a great afternoon exploring the way that gravity and
natural forces can be counteracted through the design of
towers that use solid bases and good connecting materials.
With our excellently designed towers reaching up to 1.6 me-
tres it is fair to say that Stage Two’s engineering prowess was
on show for all to see. Stage Two teachers and students
would like to thank all the parents and carers who attended,
with special thanks going to Mr Corey and Cheryl Dodds for
manning the BBQ, Mr Terry for helping with the BBQ setup
and Mrs Bentham for her assistance on the day and in the
lead up to the event. We look forward to seeing you all in the
future for our upcoming Stage 2 STEM afternoons.

Shin pads on, socks up. On the 11th of August, our brilliant soccer team played 4 games of soccer
in the Penrith Cup, they sadly lost 3 games but came out victorious in the end and came back to
school winning one game.
The proud soccer team, was applauded by all the side line warriors (parents). Mr Little enjoyed
coaching the team on the day and gave them excellent advice when they required it.
Thanks to Nathan’s Dad and Xavier’s Mum who transported the students to the game. The soccer
team would also like to thank them for buying the students their Slurpee's.
To Mr Little and Mr Bourne, we owe you one for being awesome teachers who support our
sporting teams.

Term 3, Week 6,
Be on Time, Be in Line by Nine
This term a significant number of our students - 41% have
arrived at school late.
Missing a few minutes each day may not seem like a big deal
but your child may be missing more than you realise if he or
she is continually late or leaves school early.
Children arriving late causes disruption to learning for other students in their class.
Current research shows the morning is the most productive time of the day with
10.00am the peak period of productivity. When children arrive late and take time to
settle as they inevitably do, precious minutes are lost.
Braddock Public School’s school attendance target is 93%. Currently this term, our
Year 1 students are the closet to reaching the target, followed closely by Kindergar-
ten and Year 4 .

As part of the DoE Work Health and Safety, we are required
to have regular evacuation, lockdown and alert practices so
that in the case of an emergency, students know the proce-
dures to be safe. All students are made aware that the situa-
tion is a practice when it happens.
This fortnight students will be explicitly taught the proce-
dures for an evacuation and lockdown. Discussions will be
held in classrooms as to why we have these procedures and
in what situation the procedures take place.
On Monday, 21st August, 2017 students in K – Year 4 had the opportunity to attend the
Road and Pedestrian Safety Education Program for KIDS. Students practised using pedes-
trian crossings, recognising and following ‘children crossing’ signs and ‘lolly pop’ pedestrian
signs. They had lots of fun driving the mini cars where they had to obey the road rules
including stopping at the traffic lights.
