RECKLESS DRIVING AROUND THE SCHOOL
INTERACTIVE WHITEBOARD CIVVIES
Brackenhurst Primary School
Newsletter 05/2017
10 February 2017
Dear Parents
Quote for the Week:
Please note that the Civvies Week will be held
from Monday 13 March – Friday 17 March. If
you have already paid the R100 whiteboard levy, they may participate in the upcoming civvies
week. Children will be eligible to wear civvies for any whiteboard levy money received on or
before Friday 10 March.
Grade 1 – 7 individual photographs will be taken
on Wednesday 15 February and Thursday 16
February 2017.
PLEASE NOTE: The correct school uniform MUST be worn on the day of the photographs,
(either correct summer uniform or correct winter
uniform) NO P E UNIFORM.
We will be having our
annual soap-box derby day on
Wednesday, 29 March 2017. All learners
have received an
information letter as well as a sponsor
form. If you are able to sponsor any prizes, however,
big or small, please contact Mrs Barkhuizen on (011) 900 1000.
We ONCE again urge parents to drive with
caution around the school. It seems that drivers are ignoring pedestrian crossings and not
stopping to allow the children to cross the road.
RULE OF THE ROAD: Pedestrians have the right of way when at a pedestrian crossing.
Drivers MUST stop and allow pedestrians to cross
the road safely.

PARENTS’ CORNER
WHAT IS NOT BULLYING?
When talking about bullying, it is very important
for parents (and teachers and children) to understand WHAT IS NOT BULLYING. Many
times, a single act or behaviour is out of
proportion, but is not considered bullying.
Some people think that bullying is any aggressive behaviour and although such behaviours are a
source of concern and need attention, it is important to separate them from bullying.
Bullying is recurring and deliberate abuse
of power.
It is not easy for children to understand the difference between a delierate act and an
accidental one. Many grownups also talk about
things people do to them as if they were done intentionally to hurt them. Such perception is
very dangerous, because every minor act of conflict, done without any intention to harm, can
escalate and become a big conflict.
Much like in any communication, whether it is
verbal or not, there are two sides involved. Bullying is a form of communication and depends
not only on the giver but also on the receiver. For an incident to be considered bullying, the
aggressor must want to hurt someone and the
victim must perceive the incident as a deliberate act of abuse.
It is very important for the victim to know what
is not bullying to make sure that when things
seem hurtful, they will not fall immediately into the category of bullying, because the way to
overcome bullying is different from the way to overcome other hurtful acts.
NOT BULLYING LIST:
The incidents listed below are NOT considered
bullying:
1. Not liking someone – It is very natural that people do not like everyone around
them and, as unpleasant as it may be to
know someone does not like you, verbal and non-verbal messages of “I don’t like
you” are not acts of bullying.
2. Being excluded – Again, it is very natural for people to gather around a
group of friends and we cannot be
friends with everyone, so it is acceptable that when children have a party or play a
game at the playground, they will include
GENERAL
PARENT’S CORNER
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
their friends and exclude others. It is
very important to remind children they do the same thing sometimes too and,
although exclusion is unpleasant, it is not an act of bullying.
3. Accidentally bumping into someone – When people bump into others, the
reaction depends mostly on the bumped person’s mood. If they have had a bad
day, they think it was an act of aggressive behaviour, but if they are in a
good mood, they smile back and attract
an apology. This is also relevant for playing sport, like when children
throwing the ball at each other hits someone on the head, it is very
important for teachers and parents to
explain that some accidents happen ithout any bad intention and it is
important not to create a big conflict, because it was NOT an act of bullying.
4. Making other children play things a
certain way – Again, it is very natural
behaviour. Wanting things to be done our way is normal and is not an act of
bullying. To make sure children do not fall into considering it as an aggressive
or “bossy” behaviour, we need to teach
them assertiveness. If your children come home and complain that one of
their friends is very bossy and always wants things to be done their way, you
can show them that they want it too and
that their friend is miserable, because he/she is not flexible enough and will
suffer in life for insisting that things be done his/her way. Again, although it is
not fun or pleasant, this is NOT bullying.
5. A single act of telling a joke about
someone – Making fun of other people is not fun for them, but the difference
between having a sense of humour and making fun of someone is very fine. It is
important to teach children (and adults)
that things they say as jokes should also be amusing for the others. If not, they
should stop. Unless it happens over and over again and done deliberately to hurt
someone, telling jokes about people is NOT bullying.
6. Arguments – Arguments are just heated disagreements between two (or
more) people (or groups). It is natural
that people have different interests and
disagree on many things. Think about it, most of us have disagreements with
others. The argument itself is NOT a form of bullying, although some people
turn arguments into bullying, because
they want to win the argument so much. They use every means to get what they
want and find a weakness in the other person, abuse knowledge or trust they
have gainedd and use it against the other person. It is very important to
distinguish between nataural
disagreements and bullying during an argument.
7. Expression of unpleasant thoughts
or feelings regarding others – Again,
communication requires at least two players. Although it may be unpleasant
to hear what someone thinks about you, it is NOT a form of bullying but a very
natural thing. In every communication, there are disagreements and some form
of judgement about each other’s attitude
and behaviour. If someone says to you, “I think this was not a nice gesture” or
“You insulted me when you said this,” this is NOT bullying but an expression of
thoughts and feelings.
8. Isolated acts of harassment,
aggressive behaviour, intimidation or meanness – The definition of
bullying states that there is repetition in
the behaviour. Bullying is a conscious, repeated, hostile, aggressive behaviour
of an individual or a group abusing their position with the intention to harm
others or gain real or perceived power. Therefore, anything that happens once is
NOT an act of bullying. As a parent it
is important that you pay attention to what your children are telling
you and find out if things are hsppening more than once.
All the behaviours listed above are unpleasant and need to be addressed, but they are NOT to
be treated as bullying. Many times, labelling a singlt act of aggression can turn it into bullying
just by perceiving it that way.
Article from www.what-is-not-bullying And finally
TEACHER: What are you writing?
PUPIL: A letter to myself.
TEACHER: What does it say? PUPIL: I don’t know. I won’t get it until
tomorrow.
Mrs Johnson asked her class to write an essay
about what they would do if they had a million rand. Everyone except Jane began to write.
Jane twiddled her thumbs and looked out the window.
When Mrs Johnson collected the papers, Jane’s sheet was blank. “Jane,” said Mrs Johnson,
“everyone has written two pages or more, but
you’ve done nothing. Why is that?” “Nothing is what I’d do,” replied Jane, “if I had a
million rand.”

STUDY COURSE
Friday 3 March (14:00 – 17:00)
Saturday 4 March (9:00 – 12:00 & 14:00 – 17:00)
The study course is for learners from grade 4 up, and teaches children how to study effectively. We work
on learning through association, how to remember what we have learnt, how to plan ahead, and how to
answer a question paper.
A brain profile questionnaire is completed by each learner before the commencement of the course. Each
learner’s brain profile is then taken into account during the course in order to suit their unique
preferences. The cost of the course is R1000.00, which includes the brain profile, a baroque CD, a file
with all study material and a surprise for each learner to assist them with their newly acquired skills. The
course consists of 3 3hour sessions (normally a Friday from 2 to 5, and a Saturday from 9 to 12 and again
from 2 to 5).
An appointment must be made – at least a week before the course - in order to complete the brain profile
