MARCH 2019 NO. 212 T HE Bribie RSL Club will once again host an International Women’s Day lunch. Guest speaker for the Friday, March 8 luncheon will be triple Olympian and successful businesswoman Lisa Curry. A renowned swimmer, popular personality, motivational speaker, author, elite coach, personal trainer, TV and radio presenter, former chairman of the National Australia Day Council and mum to three children, Lisa is an outstanding Australian success story. Best known for an international swimming career spanning 23 years and placing her in the top 25 swimmers in the world, Lisa also coached the Riggeroos outrigger team to four world championships in Hawaii, the first Australian team to do so in the history of the race, and was the first Australian to win the Hawaiian Moloakia-Ohau 66km solo race. Following a major personal health scare, Lisa set about regaining her vitality and zest for life with her trademark determination, focusing this time on improving her exercise regime and diet. Believing that many people want to make a similar change in their lives but are confused about where to start, Lisa’s passion today is to inspire others through her own experience. She has a unique and powerful message to share with other Australians, to encourage them to improve the quality of their lives through sensible weight loss and exercise and to reverse the growing trend of increasing levels of obesity and heart disease in both children and adults. The luncheon will also benefit Hairdressers with Hearts, a not-for-profit organisation set up to help victims of domestic violence and elder abuse gain access to appropriate resources and professional help. A portion of each ticket sold will go to Hairdressers with Heart as well as the proceeds of a raffle on the day. Tickets to the luncheon are $50 and includes a two-course meal and a glass of bubbles. Tickets are on sale at bribiersl.com.au or visit the club reception. Doors open at 11.30am for a noon start. THE Bribie RSL Club will once again host an International Women’s Day lunch.

Believing that many people

want to make a similar change in their lives but are confused about where to start, Lisa’s passion today is to inspire others through her own experience.

Luncheon tofeature Lisa CLUBS Queensland has rallied its members

across the state to donate towards flood relief for Townsville, working with Team Rubicon Australia to help raise support for the affected community.

As part of Team Rubicon’s Operation Gordon, 65 volunteers have been deployed to assist with the clean-up up north. An amazing effort has seen volunteers log 1974 hours of disaster relief.

“As a 2011 Brisbane flood victim, I know how important it is to get cleaned up quickly to even start on the long road to recovery, “said Laura Bos, communications and government relations manager, Clubs Queensland.

“At a time when everything seems completely out of control, cleaning up is one thing you can start and that was an important part of the emotional recovery for me.

“So, getting Team Rubicon up to Townsville was something that I knew our community club sector could do that was significant for the people of Townsville.”

Although only a fledgling non-profit organisation, Team Rubicon Australia is making leaps and bounds in helping out the community, both here at home and overseas.

With their motto, “Disasters are our business,

veterans are our passion”, the two waves of Greyshirt volunteers have been in and among the wreckage to clear out flood damaged homes, joining the legion of more than 500 first responders.

As part of Clubs Queensland’s flood relief campaign, so far 15 of its generous clubs have shown their support in donating to Team Rubicon Australia’s organisation.

HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY

BRIBIE Island’s Community Men’s Shed has received a $200 cheque from Bribie RSL Club.

The donation tied in well as the Men’s Shed celebrated its first birthday on February 27.

Management committee chairman Roger Matthews said that over the past year the shed had become established, operating on a Wednesday from 8.30am

until noon.“I have found that the Men’s Shed has

brought some focus and sense of Comradeship for newly retired and older men from our community,” Mr Matthews said.

“In the shed we are updating our safety gear and the club’s kind grant will help us buy some full-length face masks for wood and metal work.”

A UNIQUE Bribie RSL Club promotion could not have been won by a more appropriate member.

Sandstone Point’s Christine Wilson has brought home a motorised fishing kayak after her entry was drawn out in an Australia Day bar promotion.

Two years previously, a similar kayak was stolen from a close friend’s home.

“My friend Richard Hardaker, a returned veteran and a member of the RSL since 2013, will be able to use the kayak for fishing, which he enjoys,” Christine said.

“I’m a Red Hatter member and we had our first meeting for 2019 at the RSL. After seeing the kayak, Richard and I went for a meal and took part in the promotion.

“It was a wonderful surprise to be notified on Australia Day that we had won the kayak.”

Christine and Richard have already taken the kayak out into the Passage and had a happy time with friends who also have kayaks.

“We are absolutely delighted with the win,” she said.

THE Stevie Nicks/Fleetwood Mac Experience’s Gold Dust Woman is a short glimpse into the musical career of Stevie Nicks.

Appearing at the Bribie RSL on Saturday, April 13, the show heads from the start of her journey in the early days fronting the super band Fleetwood Mac and follows on into her very successful solo career.

The audience will enjoy iconic hit songs such as Dreams, Go Your Own Way, Rhiannon, Don’t Stop, The Chain, Gold Dust Woman, Edge of 17 and many more as this talented group of musicians and singers present the Big Mac sound as they were in their heydays of the 70s and 80s.

Not just another Fleetwood Mac tribute band, this is more of an experience through

song and music, showcasing some historical and interesting facts about Stevie Nicks, Lindsay Buckingham and the Fleetwood Mac family, as well as a review of Stevie’s solo career highlights that helped make her the loved and revered singer/songwriter that she is today.

Known as the Godmother of rock, her iconic gypsy dress style and unique voice has made her a much loved, larger than life female legend of her time.

AUSTRALIA first met platinum-selling recording artist Emily Williams in 2005’s Australian Idol where she won the hearts of the nation with her phenomenal talent and true powerhouse voice.

Soon after Idol, Emily joined the all-girl group Young Divas, who enjoyed mammoth success with huge hits such as This Time I Know It’s For Real, Happening All Over Again, Turn Me Loose and Searching.

After their success as the recipients of countless awards for their two mega studio albums and following their fifth full scale national tour, the girls decided to disband and pursue their solo careers.

Emily launched her eagerly awaited solo career with the dance track Spellbound in late 2010, which was recognised globally, this time with a nomination for Australian Female Artist of The Year.

Emily pursued a new musical direction with her second solo You’re Mine. This soulful single premiered live on Channel 7, instantly receiving rave reviews for its soft melody and Emily’s signature killer notes which won her the title as Queen of the high Cs. Emily’s next album Uncovered was soon launched but deciding to release it was a big step for her.

“I wanted the sound to be true to me, real songs written by me, from the heart but definitely built for the dance floor,” she said.

“I decided on the title Uncovered as I feel that this is the first time the world has seen me totally raw. I’m not in front of a band or with the girls and I’m not hiding behind anything, it’s just me up front and personal and I love it.”

April 2013 marked the national release of Emily’s hot new track and video clip Get It, and in pure Urban Diva style, achieved viral recognition and over 178,000 views in under than 20 days.

Emily soon took things international

performing in the UK, France, Ireland, Italy and the UAE touring her UK top 10 hit duet featuring MTV artist Leroy Reed, Can’t Get Enough.

Developing her musical style and collaborating with European talents led to the release of The Way It Is. The single delivered hordes of new fans and shot to number seven on the Australian charts.

Open 3 bowl pairs at 1pm

■ ELIZABETH Bernardin receives her Super Veterans badge at Scroungers. It is presented to her by men’s president Buddha Bob Wedd.

AFTER several weeks of the top Bongaree Bowls Club green being out of use during its renovations, it is now ready for use with first games played on it from Tuesday, February 19.

Although it will need breaking in, bowlers will be relieved to be playing underneath the shade cloth during hot days.

The first bowlers to play on the top green were 20 non-bowlers from Gem Life in the morning session. Our club will have 11 coaches and assistants to help coach these people.

During our usual Tuesday afternoon session, the new green was in use.

The ladies singles and men’s pairs club competition is well under way

with finals taking place in late February. The men’s and ladies Gr8s have been in progress for three weeks. We wish them well.

The ladies and men’s AGMs were held recently and the presidents for this year are Doreen Pennery for the ladies and Bob Wedd (Buddha) for the men’s.

■ PRESIDENT Mark presents prizes to winner Jenny Warburton and runner-up Bruce Levings.

WITH the Australia Day weekend, everyone thought the number of Bribie Island RSL Social Golf Club players would be a bit less than usual.

But 22 players turned out to contend for the President’s Trophy, which was won by Jenny Warburton, who really showed the field the way to play Bribie Island.

Congratulations to Jenny on a great effort and I have been told that the handicapper has already worked out how many strokes you are going to lose. After all it’s so much easier now.

Once again Bruce Levings was in the winning circle as runner-up on the day. Well done Bruce. You always seem to come good at our home course, even in 30 degrees.

Winner Jenny Warburton 50 points, runner-up Bruce Levings 40 points. NTPs: Men’s: 4th and 16th Shane Shipton, 7th Bruce Levings, 14th Paul Haggers. Ladies: 4th and 7th Karran Quinn, 14th Jenny Warburton, 16th Thurl Levings. NAGA Ernie Hall.

The hot and humid weather welcomed us on February 10 at Woodford.

Even at 7am it was 26 degrees with an estimated top of 33 degrees. Everyone knew it was going to be a hard slog through the hills of Woodford.

However as with almost every game lately, a stallion of the greens Sean Hardy outran us all and cantered home to win the single stableford event with a score of 52 points.

Not to be outdone completely, Allan Williamson came in with a burst of talent to take runner-up on 49 points.

A great game by both players in these conditions and, of course, this day was to celebrate the lives of two founding members of our club.

The Jack Kenny Trophy was won by Sean Hardy and the Uncle Arthur Trophy was won by the winning lady on the day Thurl Levings. Congratulations to all winners and to all members who accepted the challenge of playing in such conditions.

NTPs: Men’s: 3rd David Stebbings, 6th and 11th Paul Hagger, 17th Ron Scobie. Ladies: 3rd, 6th and 17th Thurl Levings

IT was early in January when the Bribie Island RSL Social Fishing

Club held its annual general meeting.

The meeting was very well organised so it wasn’t long before a new committee assumed their new positions at the head table.

Keith Kable was elected president after a few years as vice-president, replacing Mike Phillips who had served in the position for more than six years.

Trevor Plant is a fully certified financial accountant and will hopefully be continuing as our treasurer for a few years to come. Our members can feel assured that our finances are in very capable hands.

Ron Winnett became a life member three years ago after serving on the committee for over 20 years.

Ron is an extremely capable fisherman in both inshore and offshore conditions, so he has all the necessary skills and knowledge to continue as weighmaster.

Loris Roubin has been our secretary for a few years but will need to serve another 10 years to gain the necessary experience.

Jim Urquhart is a newcomer to the position of vice-president and will have all the help and guidance he needs from Keith Kable. Jim has been a farrier for many years and is also a very keen fisherman. The club was formed well over 25 years ago and has a long-standing affiliation with the Bribie RSL, without whose help the club would find it difficult to survive.

The Bribie RSL offers a venue for all club meetings as well as the opportunity to raise funds through raffles for part of

the year. Membership fees and nomination fees

also provide financial income, which is used to support numerous social functions and weekend trips away.

It is also amazing to see the number of small businesses which continually contribute to the income by offering gift vouchers and raffle prizes.

These donations are by no means a small contribution considering that most of the local businesses are family and small businesses which are also struggling to make ends meet. We can’t thank you guys enough for the support.

The club now has in excess of 80 financial members who are actively involved in supporting our fishing competitions, Sunday afternoon barbecues, weekend trips away and other functions.

THE 2019 annual general meeting for the Bribie Island Social Lawn Bowls club was well attended.

Club president Peter Ditchburn was returned unopposed. New members on the committee include Dour Hogan, Ryan Follett and Roger Brooks.

On Sunday, February 17, 55 members caught the bus for a day’s outing to Nambour.

After a delicious lunch provided by the ladies at Nambour Bowls Club, teams took to the greens for an afternoon of bowls and fun. Winners on the day included Doug Hogan, Carol Bonney, Billy Moor, Di Neuman and Rosa McLeod.

The next trip will be to Wynnum-Manly this month. Names will be taken at the RSL on

Monday, March 4 at 8.30am.

If you are unable to attend at this time contact games director Colin Hodges on 5497 6749 to secure a seat on the bus.

New members are always welcome. Any bowler interested in joining or seeking more information can contact president Peter Ditchburn on 0418 754186.

AS mentioned in the previous Beacon, Norma Collis celebrated her 90th birthday on January 18.

To mark this landmark occasion, the Bribie RSL Indoor Bowls Club hosted a function for Norma where she was able to share a huge birthday cake with other club members.

On February 8 the club held its annual general meeting and the election of committee members took place. The results of the elections are: President Patrick Kavanagh, vice

president Maureen Drummond, secretary Wayne McClear, treasurer Shirley O’Donnell, games director Glen Malcolmson. All general committee positions were also filled.

The club would like to express our appreciation for the hard work and efforts that the previous committee put into ensuring that our club remained successful.

Also our past public relations committee member Mike Larking has decided to step down from this position and we would like to thank

him for promoting the Indoor Bowls Club.

BRIBIE teenager Kyle Thomson, pictured above, has the world in his hands.

Over the past few years Kyle has built a reputation as a budding 8-ball and snooker player.

This reputation was enhanced last month in New Zealand when as a member of the Australian under 21 snooker team he downed the Kiwis’ No. 1 player three frames to one.

Kyle’s grandfather Don Thomson said Kyle was now looking forward to heading to the United Kingdom in June as a member of the six-strong Australian 8-ball team for the worlds.

“Kyle will have two weeks of competition there in a team format against the Rest of the World as well as singles,”

Don said.“He has been trying for

years to make this team and is playing really well at the moment. I think he’s good enough to win the worlds.”

In his last year as a junior, the 17-year-old lives on Bribie with his grandparents and practises on the Bribie Sports Club snooker tables.

He made the national snooker side after taking out the Australian under 18s title in Albury earlier this year.

On the local front, he made the top 16 at highly regarded Clem Jones Queensland Open Snooker championships at Redcliffe.

Kyle does not have much spare time as he starts his second-year apprenticeship as a painter and decorator in May.
