From the President;

In this season of brotherly (and sisterly) love, I thought it appropriate to highlight our

Collect, which acts as an invocation in most of our meetings. It’s good as a reminder that

although we come from diverse backgrounds, with varied experiences, and several points

of view, it was meant to bring us together to work for a common cause.

Mary Stewart wrote the Collect in 1904 as a member of the Fortnightly Club, the forerunner

of the Longmont Colorado BPW club. The Collect was written as a prayer to instill a sense

of unity among women working together with wide interests and important goals.

Mary Stewart worked for women's suffrage nationally and attended the meeting in St. Louis,

where the National Federation was launched. She was elected its first corresponding

secretary and thereafter took an active part in the growth of the young organization by

service as chairman or member of a number of national committees.

This author, who until 1910 signed the Collect with her pen name, "Mary Stuart", remained

involved in BPW until her death in 1943.

Keep us, O God, from pettiness; let us be large in thought, in word, in deed.

Let us be done with fault-finding and leave off self-seeking.

May we put away all pretense and meet each other face to face,

without self-pity and without prejudice.

May we never be hasty in judgment and always generous.

Let us take time for all things; make us to grow calm, serene, gentle.

Teach us to put into action our better impulses, straightforward and unafraid.

Grant that we may realize it is the little things that create differences,

that in the big things of life we are at one.

And may we strive to touch and to know the great, common human heart

of us all, and O Lord God, let us forget not to be kind! --Mary Stewart

May each one of you be richly blessed during this holiday season, and remember the words

by which we are joined together during the next year.

Business and Professional Women of TN

INTERIM BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

NOVEMBER 9 & 10, 2012

President Terri Curran presided over the

2012 Interim Board of Directors meeting

Interim Board was an informative day with good discussion,

yummy food provided by Charlotte and Berdena and a very good

speaker who shared what is being done for Women Veterans in

Tennessee. There were goodies to buy, rather than the usual silent

auction items, and good fellowship with other BPW members.

Reports of the discussion groups are listed below. We had a very

good day. Thanks to everyone who attended Interim Board. Terri

Collaboration Discussion

A definition of Collaboration pointed out that it is “to cooperate or work

with another”. Most businesses and organizations are recognizing the fact

that it is critical to work together for future success.

A list of 10 Principles were discussed for effective collaborative efforts to exist –

1) Focus on Achieving Results;

2) Treat …. as a capability;

3) Align authority, information and decision making;

4) Promote personal accountability;

5) Promote high standards for information sharing;

6) Exploit the rhythm of divergence and convergence;

7) Manage complex trade-offs;

8) Articulate and enforce a few strict rules;

9) Design effective organizations to promote collaborations;

10) Align support systems to promote ownership.

All in the group felt we have started some good collaborative efforts in

BPW/TN. Phyllis

Fundraising Discussion As Fundraising Chair, my group discussed the idea of having theme of BPW/TN merchandise as

oppose to the Foundation store that still sells BPW/USA merchandise. Some of the ideas to

have were lanyards (similar to the lanyards we wear at convention and IB), t-shirts for kids

(says Future Member of BPW/TN), and a card similar to your rewards cards from various store

that have discounts and our own women with business can have their own business discount

added. We hope to have a functioning online store on our web site with paypal or have order

forms to send the orders to our Administrative Assistant. As newly appointed Fundraising Chair,

I do want feedback from our members. I believe that way if we have what you want, you would

be more willing to buy. LeeAnn

Membership Discussion First of all I want to thank everyone that was involved and attended IB this year. The Membership discussion group we had, I found to be very enlightening, and through further research in putting together a working list of current BPW members, several things have occurred to me, the least of which is that we, the current members and clubs, desperately need to step up our efforts in bringing new members "blood" into this organization. If we fail in this endeavor the organization will be short lived at best. There was an abundance of discussion concerning what exactly the key to obtaining new members would and could be. Member retention seemed to be of issue as well. I am currently working on a three step plan that will be an educational process for not only gaining and developing interest in our group, but would further help in retention of those members. This program will be presented in it's entirety at convention, and available upon request from me after January 2013 -the Rogersville Club, as it is my home club, is our test

club to see if this program works with the efficiency I have projected. Karen

This is a picture of Lafollette club members, who were able to

be present when we received our proclamation for NBWW at

the close of our Women Business Leaders Program held at the

Chamber in Jacksboro… We had six new people express an

interest in joining our organization, as a result of this venture...

Hardeman County BPW held their annual “Ladies Night Out” event to Celebrate National Business Women’s

Week, October 18th. We use this event to bring a group of women together to educate, inform and enjoy the night

while highlighting the importance of women in the workforce. Ten employers were recognized and over 18 vendors

participated with us. We had great participation. Over 120 ladies enjoyed the night out. We had a lot of fun with

our vendors who were set up around the room. The ladies enjoyed shopping and looking at all the pretty items on

display. They also enjoyed and a soup tasting, prepared by our members along with other accompanying delights.

Since we were gearing up for the election, we found it appropriate to include as part of our evening a reminder

of the importance of voting and how hard women fought for that right by showing the “Bad Romance Video”.

The crowd enjoyed it and was a great way to get their attention.

Our keynote speaker was Mrs. Katrina Mays, an assistant victim witness coordinator with the District

Attorney’s office in Jackson, TN. “Tina” as she is known by locally, is a Hardeman County native where she lives

with her husband and children. She spoke on domestic violence, and shared her personal testimony where she had

been a victim of domestic violence earlier in her life. Her personal message was empowering and inspiring.

We could not have held an October event without giving some time to on cancer and cancer prevention.

Two of our vendors were Relay for Life Teams and one of the ladies did an activity where she posed questions to

our audience asking everyone to whom the questions applied to sit down. At the end all were sitting and you

realized all had been touched in some way by cancer. Andrea Young, a one year survivor shared very briefly

about the importance of regular checkups and screenings and following the advice of your physician.

Hardeman County BPW received a proclamation declaring the week of October 22-26, 2012 as National

Business Women’s Week. The proclamation was signed by Willie Spence, County Mayor and Steven Barrett,

City Mayor.

We were excited to have good participation. Although this event was not intended to be a fundraiser, we have,

due to the numbers participating in the last few years, vendor fees, and adding a silent auction, found we do make

some money. After expenses, we cleared nearly $800.00 from the event, while only charging a $5.00 entry fee for

each participant. This is due almost entirely to the dedicated BPW members who continued to provide the

refreshments and bear that expense personally. By keeping the cost low, providing an informal fun atmosphere

and informative speakers has enabled us to keep this event GROWING and allow us great networking

opportunities for potential members.

Request for BPW Foundation Career Advancement Scholar-

ship applications and criteria were

distributed last year after the annual conference. We re-

ceived two applicants prior to the deadline date. Both appli-

cants were students attending Union University in Jackson,

TN pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leader-

ship. However, based on established criteria, our applicants

did not meet the requirements. The criteria states that the applicants must be pursuing a bachelor’s

degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) or related field.

In order to reach more young ladies, we must start the application process earlier to capture the

attention of the university counselors at the beginning of the winter term (January). Once we lose

this window of opportunity, the chance of reaching a good population of young ladies decline due to

summer break.

To get started early, please email me at [email protected] for an

application package. Our goal is to announce our selected applicant at the annual convention in June.

If you are looking for an end-of-year tax deduction,

what better way than to donate to an organization

that is near and dear to our hearts. The BPW

Foundation is a terrific resource for all of us, and

they provide many benefits seen and unseen.

"This is a good way for the BPW members to make

a financial donation to BPW Foundation and

receive a tax deduction before filing 2012 taxes."

NEW STATE BPW BROCHURE……. For those of you who were unable to attend Interim

Board, we have developed a BPW/TN Brochure that

is available to all clubs to use in their efforts to both

recruit and spread the word about our organization.

If you were unable to either be at the meeting, or

were not represented, please let me know and I'll

have Susan Jakoblew send you a supply.

Please let me know if you'd like 25 or 50.

Hopefully, this will be one more way to assist the

locals clubs by using funds that were previously

used to mail the Achiever.

We hope you find this a worthwhile alternative.
