1.2. About BPT ROX™ for HYSYS Restriction orifices, Orifice and venture flow meters are not available as standard unit operations in HYSYS. If the need arises to model such a unit, the user currently has to somehow fudge or approximate the operation of this equipment. BPT ROX uses the Homogenous Equilibrium Method, “HEM” as the general flow calculation method for restriction orifices and uses ISO5167 as the basis for the calculation of orifice flow meters and venture flow meters. BPT ROX™ for HYSYS is usable in both steady state and dynamic simulations. BPT ROX is not an orifice plate design tool, but if the user wishes to do a design, he can us a HYSYS adjust to modify the main dimensions to find an orifice/throat size that fits the needs of the process. This software comes as an extension for Aspen HYSYS v7.3 and onwards from AspenTech. The BPT ROX™ is licensed software from BPT. The BPT ROX™ for HYSYS is programmed as a HYSYS Extension with the following Unit Operation display name: Orifice and venturi rating. More information about AspenTech and Aspen HYSYS is found on http://www.aspentech.com/ More information on the orifice and venturi calculations and its terminology can be found in API Std 520 (Sizing, Selection, and Installation of Pressure-relieving Devices in Refineries, Part I - Sizing and Selection) and in the ISO norm 5167.

3. INSTALLATION

3.1. Pre-Installation System Requirements The installation account must have local Administrator privileges.

3.1.1. Hardware Requirements BPT ROX has no specific hardware requirements beyond the specifications required for running Aspen HYSYS.

3.1.2. Software Requirements Requirement Specification Operating System Windows 7 (64 bit)

The software has been tested using Windows 7 (64 bit), but Windows 7 (32 bit) should work as well.

Aspen HYSYS Aspen HYSYS V7.3 (CP3) and onwards The software has been qualified with Cumulative Patch 3 installed, but earlier installations of HYSYS V7.3 may also work. Minimum licenses required: HYSYS_Process

Microsoft .NET Framework .NET Framework 3.5 SP 1 Usually installed as part of HYSYS installation.

3.2. Installation

3.2.1. Installation files The required files needed to install the BPT-ROX will be installed in the application folder by the install routine, except the license file, which will be provided separately. The installation files consist of a SetUp.exe file and a Setup ROX.msi package. Execute the Setup.exe file, if you execute the .msi file directly, no checking for prerequisites is done and this may result in a failure to correctly install and register the extension. After the installation has been run, a few more steps are required to successfully use the extension.

3.2.2. Copy interop.HYSYS.dll & hasp_net_windows.dll to the HYSYS folder The provided file was created using HYSYS V7.3. It will work with HYSYS V7.3 or later versions. If you use version V8.x and you have other extensions installed, it is possible that you would already have an interop.hysys.dll. and this file may be based on .NET version 4.0. In that case you will need an updated version of BPT-ROX or the interop file. So, if there is already an interop.hysys.dll present, make a backup copy before placing the supplied in the HYSYS folder! Next copy the file hasp_net_windows.dll to the Aspen HYSYS folder. If you omit this step, the registration process described below will most likely fail. Filename Description Bpt-rox.dll

BPT ROX™ Extension container code

Bpt-rox.edf BPT ROX™ Extension definition file. This file makes it possible for HYSYS to communicate with BPT ROX™. It also contains the graphical view of the BPT ROX™ unit operation in HYSYS.

If the extension is installed on a machine that has only ever seen Aspen HYSYS V8.x installations, it may be necessary to install .NET Framework 3.5 SP 1. If that proves to be problematic, a version that references .NET Framework 4 could be created.

3.2.3. Register the BPT ROX™ Extension To register BPT ROX™ in HYSYS, do the following:

1. Start HYSYS with the “Run as Administrator” option. From the Tools menu, select Preferences. The preferences view opens.

2. On the Extensions tab, click Register an Extension. 3. Browse to the folder where the extension files are located on your computer, select the

bpt-rox.dll file and click the Open button. 4. Exit and re-start HYSYS, note that this step is no longer required in HYSYS V8.3 and higher.

1. The extension definition file *.edf must reside in the same folder as the extension dll. 2. BPT ROX™ can be un-registered using the same approach, click Unregister Extension

and exit HYSYS.

3.2.4. Install the ROX™ License file ROX™ comes as part of the BPT Toolkit. Licensing is controlled through a license server. An ROX license will be available if enough tokens (2) are available from the license server and if the Toolkit is licensed for BPT-ROX. Licensing would normally be installed on a server machine by the IT department. To install the licensing, proceed as follows:

• Download the SafeNET Runtime Engine installer from the BPT ProjectPlace site. • Download the “BPT License installer.exe” from the same ProjectPlace site • Run the BPT License installer tool on the machine that will effectively be used as the

license server!

• Select the “Installation of new protection key” option

4.2. Modelling an Orifice Plate or Venturi Meter BPT ROX™ requires a HYSYS feed stream with a known composition, pressure and temperature. Depending on the options selected, a feed flow rate, a discharge pressure or a pressure drop must also be specified.

4.2.1. Specifying the information on the Design / Connections page

1. From the PFD double-click the BPT ROX™ icon. The BPT ROX™ property view appears.

2. You should be on the Connections tab 3. You should connect an inlet and an outlet stream. Also select the type of equipment you

want to model. Although the ISO5167 orifice plate and the restriction orifice both model an orifice plate, each type is accurate in it’s own domain of process conditions. The representation in the unit Op view will automatically adapt to the chosen equipment type. The icon of the PFD object needs to be selected by the user.

The orifice flow area or diameter and the pipe diameter are required. For multiphase flow, the mixing rule for the discharge coefficient should be defined. The discharge coefficients for each phase are manual inputs that are defaulted to the API 520 values. The resulting discharge coefficient can be overwritten; the method will revert to a “user entered value” setting. The viscosity coefficient is only applied for single phase liquid systems. The value is by default calculated using the API_520 curve. If the user overrides the value, this value will be used until the user removes the coefficient value. If the number has a red colour here, it means it is defaulted, if the number is blue, it means it is user entered.

4.2.4. The Rating / Nozzles page This page contains the standard nozzle parameters. Note that these parameters are used on the performance page to calculate a number of velocity related results for inlet and outlet.

4.2.5. Performance tab

The velocities at inlet and outlet use the specified diameters of the nozzles on het rating/nozzles page to calculate the flow area. The second column concerns the orifice or throat itself. The “Generate Report” button will create a report for the valve in an Excel file located in the same folder where the simulation file is located.
