Monitoring SnapVaultSnapVault is a disk-based storage backup feature of Data ONTAP that enables data stored on multiplestorage system and Open Systems (non-fi ler) storage systems to be backed up to a central, secondary storagesystem quickly and efficiently as read-only snapshots. In event of data loss or corruption on a storagesystem or open storage system, backed up data can be restored from the SnapVault secondary storagesystem to the primary or open storage system with l ittle of the downtime and uncertainty associated withconventional tape backup and restore operations.

BPM Express NetApp Filers simplifies tracking the status of backup operations and provides valuableinformation to help administrator manage data transfers.

SnapVault parameters can be displayed as a graph by clicking on the corresponding icon in the History

column.

Monitoring SnapMirrorSnapMirror is an util ity in NetApp to do data transfer across fi lers. SnapMirror works at Volume level orqtree level. It replicates data from one volume or qtree (the source) to another volume or qtree (the mirror)and periodically updates the mirror to reflect incremental changes on the source. The result of this processis an online, read-only volume (the mirror) that contains the same data as the source volume at the time ofthe most recent update.

BPM Express NetApp Filers monitors SnapMirror jobs to confirm that data is being mirrored properly, provide alerts when data replication policies are not being met, and produce key reports for trackingSnapMirror relationships and util ization to ensure data protection.

Monitoring QuotaA disk quota is a set of rules that restrict disk space and the number of fi les used by a user or a group. Aquota can also restrict the total space and fi les used in a qtree or the usage of users and groups within aqtree. For example, you could create a user quota that specifies that a particular user can use up to 225MBof disk space in a given qtree in a given volume before a warning is issued (soft l imit) and up to 250MBmaximum (hard l imit).

BPM Express NetApp Filers monitors NetApp Quota and provides a Status (running/suspended/missing) foreach volume monitored. The status history can be displayed as a graph by simply double-clicking the Statusparameter of the appropriate volume.

Monitoring LUNsBPM Express NetApp Filers monitors Logical Unit (LUN) and provides written and read bytes count for eachmonitored component. The Error Count parameter indicates the total number of errors seen on this LUN sincethe stats were last reset. In a normal situation, this parameter’s value is always zero. Its value changes toone when an error occurs and goes back to zero (no alert) at the next poll ing.

All LUN usage history can be displayed as a graph by simply clicking the corresponding icon in the Historycolumn.

ThresholdsWhenever possible, BPM Express for NetApp Filers automatically sets thresholds for parameters. If youprefer a more fault-tolerant monitoring, you can modify the thresholds of each parameter through theConfigure tab > Edit Thresholds.

1. To modify the parameter thresholds of several storage objects of an element, cl ick on the Storage(<platform>) icon in the Configure tab > Thresholds, Properties and Credentials > Edit.

or

To modify the thresholds of a particular instance, cl ick on the instance icon > Thresholds, Propertiesand Credentials > Edit.

Manually modify the thresholds on the parameter and activate the alerts

4. The "Success, changes have been saved" message indicates that the modifications have been registered.

Alerts are displayed by the parameter whose thresholds are modified.

ReportingTo facil itate the monitoring of LUN, Backups and NFS Cache, NetApp Filers Express provides customizableusage reports.

For example, the parameter “Client - Received Bytes” of the class NetApp Filers - NFS Cache does not meananything in the “Status” tab since it represents the number of NFS bytes received from clients since lastpoll ing. The value consequently changes a lot depending on the exact poll ing period. Whereas the parameter“Client – Received Bytes Rate” on the “Status” tab provides the instantaneous per second rate value.

In order to have a more meaningful report for the parameter  “Client - Received Bytes” use the “Report” tab tovisualize the parameter value on a hourly or daily basis in total (how many gigabytes have been receivedeach day, for example).

So from the above screen shot you can see that 0.5 GB were received on the 22nd and 1.65 GB on the 23rd .Vice versa for the parameter “Server – Received Bytes (GB)”, 0 GB received on 22nd and 41 GB on 23rd.

Enabling the Debug ModeBy default, BPM Express for NetApp Filers sends only the most critical information, warning and errormessages to the Application Collection Status parameter. Most often, this information is accurate enough toensure that BPM Express for NetApp Filers is functioning properly. If you encounter an issue and wish toreport it to customer support, you will be asked to enable the Debug Mode and provide the debug output tothe support team.

1. In the Configure tab > click the Element whose debug output you require.

2. Scroll down to Application Classes > click the Application class that you want to enable the debug mode >click Edit.

3. Select Yes from the drop-down Debug Mode list > Save.By default, BPM Express for NetApp Filers sends its debug output to: %RSM_HOME%/RSMxx/SEN_NetApp/sen_netapp_debug_hostname.log

4. Wait for 15 minutes and then disable the debug mode by selecting No.

5. Send the debug fi le to the support team.

Pay attention to the file size -the debug output of BPM Express for NetApp Filers could be very large if enabled forseveral days
