As I reach my one year anniversary as CEO for Boysville, all I can say is that we live in a thoughtful and caring society. You are making a difference in the lives of our children with your monetary support, as well as through community outreach and volunteerism. Your generosity matters.

There are 85 children living at Boysville who count on you every day. Both of our emergency shelters have been at capacity since we opened our new Infant and Toddler Emergency Shelter in April. Our four residential cottages and on-campus foster homes are full, and we have five community-based foster homes in the Judson Independent School District.

As the school year ended, Boysville had much to celebrate. I was privileged to watch seven high school seniors grow this past year and transition into young adults. They are full of excitement and ready to conquer the many goals they have set for themselves. Additionally, we are supporting 11 young adults in college and celebrated the graduation of three in May.

Our largest annual fundraiser will be here before we know it. The 45th Wildest Auction in the West will be held on Friday, August 19, 2011 at the Expo Hall at the Freeman Coliseum. This is a great opportunity for you to enjoy good food, great music, an open bar and a silent and live auction as we raise additional funds for abused and neglected children living at Boysville. Sign up now at www.wildestauction.org.

As I close, July 1st marks the beginning of our fiscal year. As long as children are in need of a place to call “home,” we want to help. We need your financial support to do so. Any and all donations help provide our children with food, clothing, medical and dental care, recreational activities, therapeutic services; and most importantly, a safe place to live and grow.

Thank you for what you do for children in need.

Have a great Boysville day!

Lt Gen Dave McIlvoy CEO, Boysville, Inc.

For children like Sara, Kelly and Marcos, college dreams were just that—dreams. But today they live those dreams due to the generosity of a planned gift to Boysville from many years ago.

We usually limit our charitable giving to our checkbook and are sometimes unaware of other ways we might be able to help causes we care about.

To be smarter about giving and have Uncle Sam increase our giving by paying less taxes; consider donating appreciated stock or mutual funds. Boysville has a securities account which you can instruct your present custodian to transfer appreciated shares to Boysville’s account. Make sure you transfer shares you’ve held for at least one year with the greatest amount of appreciation. You’ll receive a deduction for the full amount and because Boysville is a non-profit it can liquidate those shares with no capital gain tax. The full amount of your gift can helps like Sara, Kelly and Marcos. You will eliminate long term capital gains tax and receive a deduction for the appreciated amount of the stock.

For more information on how to include Boysville in your planned giving, contact Dave McIlvoy at (210) 659-1901 or email [email protected].

Current Gifts—cash, check, or credit card donation or electronic fund transfer with securities;or with real estate.

Honorary and Memorial Gifts—allow you to recognize others through your giving. All gifts are recognized in the Boysville Today Newsletter, as well as a card sent to the honoree or to the family of the bereaved.

Planned Giving—Wills, bequests, IRAs, life insurance, real estate and living trusts allow you to create a legacy.

Dual Benefits Gifts—including The Charitable Remainder Trust, provide you and your loved ones with earnings.

Valentine’s Breakfast This year was off to a good start as the campus celebrated Valentine’s Day with our traditional Valentine’s Day breakfast. Andrea Carranco, Roxanne Dylla, Sara Flournoy, Kane Holstead and Anna Lackness, our “Culinary Divas”, arrived at 4am to cook breakfast for the campus. Diamond Nichols and Ned Gates also arrived early to set-up the gym for our festivities. Many of the Administrative staff also helped decorate and serve food. After a breakfast of chorizo & egg tacos, pancakes and hash browns, the children left with their bellies full and their hearts warmed.

spring Break A big THANK YOU to UTSA-VOICES, Target at the Forum, a Sunday School group from First Baptist Church-Universal City and Racker Accounting Services for helping this year’s spring break be a success. Our children participated in field games, a movie night with chocolate milk, a campus wide birthday party and arts & crafts projects.

fiesta funFiesta is a fun time to be had by all in the San Antonio area and the Boysville children were not excluded. The week kicked off with several of our residents being selected to ride on a barge, sponsored by Dr. Gale Gregory, in the Texas Cavaliers River Parade. Our float theme was “Where the Wild Things Are” and eight of our children were selected to ride on the Boysville float. They had a roaring great time!

easter egg-citement Special thanks to the Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) from Judson High School for hosting the campus Easter Egg hunts. Also, thanks to Southwest Research Institute for helping the Easter Bunny by providing Easter baskets & goody bags for the children on campus. They helped ensure the kids had an “egg”ceptional Easter holiday!

Our spring was filled with fun activities for the children of Boysville

due to the generosity of our donors and many community organizations.

“araBian nights” promTwelve of our juniors and seniors attended the “Arabian Nights” prom at the San Antonio Shrine Auditorium and enjoyed a world of enchantment. A spaghetti dinner fundraiser was held in February and raised $600 to help cover prom expenses. Several of our Board Members donated additional funds to pay for tuxedo rentals for our young men, a limo ride to and from prom, prom tickets and allowed our young ladies to get their nails done. Emily Waggoner, with LR Salon, fixed our girls’ hair and make-up at no cost to Boysville. Thanks to everyone for making this a night our young adults will remember!

Boysville Doubles Its Emergency Shelter CapacityBoysville expanded its Emergency Shelter Services to care for more infants and toddlers! During 2010, Boysville continuously turned away infants and toddlers due to a lack of capacity. The Infant and Toddler Emergency Shelter opened on April 28th and doubled the number of children Boysville can serve in the Emergency Shelter.

The 12-room cottage will house 16 children from birth to 6 years old. It now includes new bathtubs, changing tables and appliances. The renovation was funded by a $100,000 grant from the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation.

JSR Construction donated their time and labor to remodel the cottage. To complete the cottage, University Presbyterian Church donated $10,000 worth of toys, sheets, highchairs, handmade cabinets, strollers and other important baby items. The congregation also made improvements to the lighting, living area construction and fencing to create an outdoor play area, as well as painted and decorated the interior of the shelter.

Boysville is seeking funding for an Infant and Toddler specific playground to help our toddlers develop their motor skills. Please contact us if you are interested in receiving a tour of the facility.

Gathering of Angels“It takes a village to raise a child”

organization angel: university presbyterian churchUniversity Presbyterian Church truly lives by the old adage of “It takes a village to raise a child.” Their involvement began in 2003 by inviting our younger residents to Vacation Bible School and a yearly Advent event celebration. Each year, University Presbyterian Church has a goal of sponsoring a special project. Last year, the Mission and Outreach Committee selected Boysville to be the beneficiary of the special project. Several members from the church contributed

their skills and many hours toward the expansion project of our emergency shelter services. The group created handmade cabinets and wooden toys, a tree mural, paintings and drawings, a hand-made quilt and a new sign for our Infant and Toddler Emergency Shelter. The congregation also donated baby gifts, in addition to the $10,000 budgeted for improvements such as lighting, living area construction and fencing to create an outdoor play area. University Presbyterian Church has shown true dedication to our children and we’re lucky to have their support.

S ince Boysville was founded in 1943, volunteers have been the driving force behind our success. When Reverend Don Holiman started caring for homeless boys sleeping in Travis Park, he put out a call for help to the San Antonio Kiwanis and the Optimists of San Antonio. They were the first volunteers to help Boysville. In time, the Boysville Auxiliary was formed to create a

way to feed and clothe the boys. Now in 2011, we continue to see many acts of kindness from mentoring individual residents to campus beautification projects hosted by various groups. Each year, Boysville selects volunteers in several categories to recognize their volunteerism. The selection process is difficult as each volunteer on our campus in invaluable to our children.

Kelly P. designed this year’s sun-catcher. Kelly has lived at Boysville for 2 years and recently graduated from Judson High School. Kelly is an extremely gifted artist and Boysville is thankful to have her talent represented by the 2011 Angel Suncatcher.

auxiliary angel: boysville auxiliary Shortly after Reverend Don Holiman founded Boysville in 1943, a small group of women offered to help. In 1952, the Boysville Board of Directors approved the group as the Boysville Auxiliary. The Auxiliary opened the first Boysville Thrift Shop in 1954 on San Pedro Ave. In 1957, the Thrift Shop was moved to its current location on Olmos Drive. This past calendar year, the Boysville Auxiliary paid off their lien on the property which is a major milestone in the history of the Auxiliary.

The Thrift Shop continues to generate significant funding for the children of Boysville and this fiscal year has provided over $150,000. But that’s not all; the Auxiliary is continually involved in the lives of our children, always finding ways at Christmas, Thanksgiving, and throughout the year to improve the home environment for the children. This past year they provided new blu-ray DVD players for all the cottages.

We celebrate the great success of the Auxiliary for over 59 years of personal and financial help to Boysville by recognizing the entire Auxiliary. The group exemplifies the spirit of volunteerism and reminds all of us how lucky we are to have found a group of wonderful friends who give to a mission we all believe in.

volunteer angel: racKer accounting servicesRacker Accounting Services has been involved with Boysville for almost 3 years. The team, led by Nick Rangel and Valerie Nieto, has been generous with their time and resources. Since 2008, the Rackers host one quarterly activity for our children. Activities range from a Halloween party for the toddlers; Spring Break field day events; and a “fun in the sun” day full

of water activities. In addition to hosting activities for our children, they have also coordinated a school supplies drive and helped clean and organize our library. Nick states, “I believe that the impact from serving the children of Boysville has been greater to our lives. When you can bring the passion and commitment of so many Rackers to a community service initiative like this, that passion and commitment is multiplied and it permeates all facets of our work and personal lives.”

education angel: debbie reichenbachDebbie Reichenbach has been a dedicated tutor to our children at Boysville since December 2008. As a retired teacher, Debbie understands the importance of an education and is committed to helping our children with their academic needs. Debbie consistently attends after school study hall and helps our children in all subject areas. Many of our children struggle with math and she makes sure to be patient, compassionate and attentive to their needs. It is not rare to find five to eight students waiting to receive her help. Even when study hours are officially over, Debbie continues to stay after and help every child that is waiting for her assistance. Debbie has an amazingly genuine spirit and is dedicated to our children’s academic success.

board angel: Jim hollerbach Our Board Angel is no stranger to the Boysville community. Jim Hollerbach has participated in nearly every facet of Board activities for over 24 years, to include being an officer and past President of the Board of Directors. In addition to his involvement with Boysville, Jim is a member of the Optimist Club of San Antonio and an active member of the San Antonio Executives Club. Through his professional network he has developed many new friends and supporters for Boysville.

Personally, he has been very generous not only with his time, but also with monetary support to many Boysville events and needs. Jim was the Boysville Scout Master for over 8 years and provided the leadership, guidance, and scouting experience to many young men. Much of his enthusiasm, high standards, and leadership traits rubbed off on many of our Boysville Alumni. Jim’s influence on the Board of Directors and personal example to so many Boysville children has truly made an uncommon impact on helping children in need.

staff angel: andrea carrancoAndrea Carranco has been at Boysville since July 2006, when she moved from being an intern to becoming a full time employee. She works tirelessly to bring much needed resources to Boysville. As the Director of Foundations and Community Relations, Andrea is known for her energy and leadership of fundraising events; however, her leadership goes beyond special events. This year alone, Boysville received new grant funds of over $550,000 as a direct result of her grant writing ability and excellent communication skills.

Her personal love for the children of Boysville runs deep, and as such she is very effective in spreading the Boysville story throughout the community. Leader, manager, ambassador, grant writer, influencer, fund raiser and Boysville standard bearer in the community—that is Andrea Carranco.

alumni angel: diamond nicholsOvercoming adversity and dealing with life’s challenges is something that many of our alumni have learned to do gracefully. Diamond lived in a single parent home, where is mother struggled to make ends meet. After several moves with relatives and friends, Diamond came to Boysville in October 1999 and lived at Boysville until he graduated from Judson High School in 2001. Diamond continued his education and received a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Wayland Baptist University in 2008.

It wasn’t long before Diamond returned “home” looking for a job. When Diamond was hired, we realized he had a gift for

working with the children. He had something that was different from all other staff. He had a story that was similar to our residents and a motto that gave them hope—“If I can do it, so can you.” He is a strong advocate for the Boysville children and often proclaims our children deserve second chances.

Diamond is married to Monica and has two beautiful children. For some of our alumni, visiting campus brings back the pain associated with how they came to Boysville. Our staff and children have been blessed by Diamond’s perseverance of facing his reality directly and making a difference in the lives of our children. Diamond exemplifies the vision each of us has for the children who call Boysville home.

arch angel: dr. george and mrs. Kymberly rapierGeorge and Kym Rapier have been dedicated to the children of Boysville for almost 15 years. This philanthropic couple has given generously to Boysville for many years and has directly influenced the ability to impact the lives of hundreds of children. This year, their generosity went beyond anything imaginable as they made the largest gift ever to the Boysville Foundation.

To really appreciate their support, you have to consider what the Rapiers do beyond the generosity of monetary gifts. They give two very important contributions—the gift of time and the use of their influence. Their presence at our annual Wildest Auction in the West spearheads the success of that event. They have also sponsored several activities for our children to include scuba dive lessons and spending time at their lake house.

The Arch Angel award is the highest honor that Boysville bestows on individuals who make a significant contribution to the success of our program through their loving acts of kindness to our children. As the recipients of this award, you would expect more than an allowance. You would expect to have a relationship, and that is what makes George and Kym Rapier special, they connect with the children who need their help.

Staff Angel: Andrea Carranco Alumni Angel: Diamond Nichols Arch Angel: Dr. George and Mrs. Kymberly Rapier
