My Club Experience

It wasn’t until seventh grade when I started attending public school that I fi rst went to the Boys & Girls Club of Manchester. My name is Catherine Burnes and I grew up with a loving family. I lived with my four brothers and my parents. Before fi nding the Club, I attended parochial school and I never felt like I fi t in with the other students. I was one of three colored students and I didn’t have as much money as all the other kids. I felt so different from everyone else. At the end of sixth grade, my parents had to enroll me in public school. I remember my fi rst day of public school not knowing anyone and feeling lost.

I had passed the Boys & Girls Club a million times before I had ever gone inside or had known the impact it would have on my life. In middle school I met a girl that had just moved here from Jamaica and it was the fi rst day for both of us. She asked me to go to the Boys & Girls Club with her. I agreed and walking into the Club changed my life. I remember walking down the stairs and seeing the teen center. To me, it was pretty amazing. There were people my age, games and some cool things to do.

By the time I was a freshman in high school, I was going to the Club daily. I joined Keystone (a teen leadership program) and this opened so many doors for me. I’ve met so many motivating people through Keystone, like Gail Devers, the world’s fastest runner. I also became a reporter for My Club/My Life, which is a Boys & Girls Club worldwide program.
