BOYDEN’S LEADERSHIP SERIES FEATURES NOVARTIS’ RANJIT SHAHANI

- Vice Chairman of Novartis India discusses building an innovation culture, patent challenges and balancing profit and social responsibility -

MUMBAI, India, August 5, 2014 – Boyden, a global leader in executive search, today released a new issue of its

Leadership Series, featuring an in-depth interview with Ranjit Shahani, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of

Novartis India.

In the interview, Mr Shahani discusses India’s future as a global pharmaceutical innovation centre, balancing profit and social responsibility, building an innovation culture, society’s stake in patents and curbing the fake drugs industry, lessons from Jack Welch on investing in people, and building effective walls between business and personal life. “We’re delighted to feature Ranjit in Boyden’s Leadership Series and highlight his expertise in successful leadership,” said Trina Gordon, President & CEO of Boyden World Corporation. “Novartis India’s strategy and operations success under Ranjit’s stewardship has been a great achievement and provides very useful lessons for aspiring leaders on the rise.” “Ranjit’s impressive track record has remarkably impacted the Indian pharmaceutical industry,” added Sushil Gulati, Head of Boyden’s Life Sciences practice in India. “He brings invaluable insight into the complex challenges and opportunities involving the enormous growth potential in the sector.”

Mr Shahani has had a successful career with Novartis spanning 17 years. He is responsible for the overall

operations of the Novartis Group of Companies in India and has made a significant contribution in consolidating

Novartis’ pharmaceutical business during the critical integration phase pre and post the formation of Novartis India

Limited.

Mr Shahani is also a key thought leader in the pharmaceutical industry in India and is actively involved in advocacy

for the liberalisation of pharmaceutical price controls and legislation to deter counterfeit drugs. As President of the

Organisation of Pharmaceutical Producers of India (OPPI), a position he has held for 10 years, he has been at the

forefront in creating awareness of the challenges facing the Indian pharmaceutical industry and how patents can

serve as innovation growth drivers.

Mr Shahani previously served as President of the Bombay Chamber of Commerce and Industry and President of

the Swiss-Indian Chamber of Commerce, and was on the Council of the International Federation of

Pharmaceuticals Manufacturers Associations (IFPMA, Geneva). He is frequently interviewed in print and television

media.

Mr Shahani received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT),

Kanpur, and an MBA from Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies in Mumbai.
