David Moore, 54, of Aidens Walk, Ferryhill, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Wood Lane, near its junction with Brancepeth Road. A black Audi A3 was found abandoned nearby shortly afterwards. Police want to speak to anyone who saw this dis- tinctive car being driven in the Ferryhill area from around 7pm on Sunday. They particularly want witnesses to come forward who may have seen two men running from Brancepeth Road, where the car was abandoned just after 10.45pm, up to the Grey Terrace area of Ferryhill. At least two men ran from the vehicle but may have separated shortly afterwards. One of them may have been bleeding from facial injuries. DCI Paul Goundry said: "Mr Moore was a hard-working family man and the men responsible showed complete disregard for the appalling injuries he received. "It is crucial that anyone who has any information, however insignificant it may seem to them, contacts police as soon as possible." Two men arrested in connection with this incident have been released on police bail pending further enquiries. Witnesses are urged to contact Durham Con- stabulary on 0345 60 60 365. Alternatively, they can speak anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 Police continue to appeal for key witnesses Mainforth Boxing & Fitness Club, which operates from Mainforth Community Centre, is starting a new Boxercise club which will be run entirely for ladies. The class will start on Monday 11th April from 7.30pm and the charge is just £3. For more informa- tion give John Hadwin a call on 0797 071 7023. The Boxing Club has been running for around 20 years and is open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 4pm till 7pm On Tuesdays and Thursdays it is open 6pm till 7pm and Saturdays from 8.30am till noon. All the sessions are geared towards boxing and fitness. There are around twenty lads present most nights and the charge per session is only £1. Boys have to be 11 years or older to attend and new members are always welcome. Girls and ladies are also welcome, but staff feel some may be uncom- fortable in a class filled with males. This is the reason for the new ladies’ Boxercise class. The popular club is run by coaches John Hadwin, Derek Slater, Adam Bowman and Trevor Knight and this year is the first season the club has become affiliated. Recent successes include Billy Snaith, 23, who won a belt in the novices category and Jordan Knight, 15, who won the Junior ABA title and is now fighting in the Regionals and has been selected for England. “Why not come along to the club, meet new friends and become much more active and fit at the same time” said a spokesperson. Year 7 and 8 students from Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College put their culinary skills to the test recently, in a live cookery competition organised by their school’s catering company, Chartwells. The ‘On your marks, get set, cook!’ competition, overseen and organised by professional chef Darren Tinkler from Chartwells, saw two teams of three pupils and two teachers go head-to-head to create the tastiest, healthiest dish

possible from a selection of mystery ingredients. After 15 minutes of frenzied cooking, the red team produced a delicious dish that was selected by the audience of fellow pupils as the winner. Darren Tinkler, Putting Fun Back into Food Manager, Chartwells, said, “It is surprisingly easy to be a creative and healthy cook, even at the age of 12 and 13 and today’s competition has proved this. Children love learning cookery skills

– it gives them the oppor-tunity to use their hands and get messy – and the live audience makes the whole experience more exciting and heightens pupils’ sense of achieve-ment. “All of the pupils seemed to have lots of fun but, perhaps more importantly, went away with some hands-on cookery skills as well as more practical knowledge about healthy eating and nutrition; it was a fantastic day.”

Garden waste collections in County Durham restarted this week following a winter break. The fortnightly collections resumed on Monday 4th April, with householders receiving leaflets giving details of their specific collection day.The following items can be placed in garden waste bins:• Small branches• Flowers• Leaves• Grass cuttings• Weeds• Prunings• Hedge clippingsBins should be left out for collection by 7am on the specified day.Garden waste is collected

Recycle your garden waste

from about 156,000 homes across the county by the council and Teesdale Community Volunteers, known as Rotters.Last year, more than 17,000 tonnes of garden waste was collected and turned into compost or soil conditioner.Oliver Sherratt, Durham County Council’s head of direct services, said, “Now that the days are getting longer and the weather is getting milder, many of us are starting to get to work in our gardens.“It’s, therefore, the perfect time to remind people to start using their garden waste bins again so we can help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill.”

On your marks....get set.... cook!

The mayor of Ferryhill Peter Atkinson was happy to visit another Golden couple on Friday 1st April, when he presented a lovely bouquet of fl owers to Ken and Jean Welford.Ken, 71, was born in Wolseley Street in Ferryhill Station and went to school there while Jean, 68, is also a local girl born in Bertha Street, attending The Broom school. They were married at St. Luke's Church, Ferryhill and met at the Pavilion Picture House where Ken was the projectionist and Jean was working as an usherette. Ken left school and he started at the Pavilion in the village, then moved onto the ABC in Darlington. He later got a job at NEECOL in Ferryhill Station where he worked for three years before he found employment at Courtaulds in Spennymoor for ten

years as a machinist. In the meantime, he also went around the working-men's clubs showing fi lms. Ken said, “The clubs would be packed out. This was long before Sky TV”. He also went around in his van renting out videos, all around Chilton, Ferryhill and Spennymoor.Jean started work at Ferguson's T.V. Factory in Spennymoor until she was married. The couple moved to Darlington after they were wed, but returned to Ferryhill Station in 1963 to live in High Street. In 1975 they moved to Bede Terrace before moving to their current address in Ramsey Drive in 1985.After the family were at school Jean started at the V.G. Shop in The Broom, working there for twenty years until Jean and her sister Pam bought

the business from Cec Bainbridge. They stayed in the shop for another eleven years. At the same time, Jean was also active going around the clubs herself showing fi lms.The lovely couple have two girls and one boy. Sharon, Deborah and Nigel. They have six grand children and three great-grand children.Jean is a keen on knitting and does a lot of sewing. She still makes her own curtains and some of her own clothes. They both like walking, gardening and holidays, including cruises and going on bus trips. They celebrated their special day with a meal at the Village Inn at Kirk Merrington, then on Mother's Day had a lovely time with family and friends over a meal at Woodham Golf Club.

Dear Editor,

I could not believe it when I read in the complaint about the toilets in Ferryhill village.

I often use these toilets and as yet I have never found them dirty or smelly. Maybe on this day the usual cleaner was off and they had not been checked as often as they would be. This is the first complaint I have heard about the toilets and I hope it will be the last. They are a great addition to our village and I am sure a lot of people are grateful they are there. Yours faithfullyHelen CoxPeace Haven,

Making County Durham ‘altogether greener’Schools and community groups are being called upon to help make County Durham ‘altogether greener’.To help spread the word Durham County Council is hosting a Northumbria in Bloom event which it’s hoped will inspire lots of volunteers to bring out their rakes and trowels and join in community projects.Oliver Sherratt, head of direct services said, “Community gardening projects are an excellent way to transform local en-vironments and there are some wonderful examples right across the county. Any project, big or small, can make a difference.“This event is an ideal op-portunity for local groups, schools or anyone who

wants to help improve the appearance of their local area, to find out what is involved and how they can get started. “We have a great track record in the prestigious Northumbria in Bloom and Britain in Bloom competi-tions and I hope that having experts from these organi-sations on hand will help enthuse many people.”There are a number of award schemes and campaigns run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), including the ‘In Bloom’ programmes. This year the society is also encouraging more people to get involved in the RHS ‘It’s your neighbourhood’ award. The award is open to volunteer led community groups keen to make their

local area cleaner and greener, whether it’s the street they live on or a small patch of communal land needing a revamp. Information will also be available for schools about ‘Growing together’, a competition recently introduced by Northum-bria in Bloom to recognise and reward the excellent work many education es-tablishments are doing to introduce young people to the benefits of horticul-ture.Anyone interested is invited to attend the event on Saturday 9th April from 10.00am to 12.30pm at County Hall in Durham. Places should be booked by calling 01207 218654 or email [email protected].

Easter egg appealThe Co-operative Funer-alcare in Parker Terrace is appealing for donations of Easter eggs following the huge success of last year’s appeal.

This year, all donations received will be shared between the children of women at local women’s aid refuges and local learning disability groups.

Eggs will be gratefully received at the Ferryhill office - as well as all other local offices - until Monday 18th April to be distributed in time for Easter.

Important changes to bus travel Members of the public who are entitled to conces-sionary travel are being reminded that there are important changes to Durham County Council’s scheme. If you qualify for conces-sionary rates on buses in the county and you travel before 09.30am then, from now on, you will be required to pay a flat rate of 50 pence. This fee applies to each journey you take but only before 09.30am.Under the council’s previous ‘enhanced con-cessionary fares scheme’ there was no charge for journeys before 09.30am. However, large reductions in Government grants

mean that the authority can not afford to run this free service any longer. The national travel scheme, which is statutory, provides for free travel on local buses to the elderly and disabled between 9.30am and 11pm Monday to Friday and at all times on weekends and Bank Holidays.Adrian White, head of transport at Durham County Council said, “There are currently 128,000 pass holders registered in the county. This flat rate of 50p for travel before 9.30am will affect about 10 per cent of those residents. While I realise that these people will not be pleased about

it, the majority of pass holders will continue to enjoy the best travel scheme in the region.”This year Durham County Council must reduce its spending by £66.4m and over the next four years by £123.5m.As part of these savings the council has also had to look at how it subsidises bus services across the county. The final list of those services which the council will no longer be able to subsidise is now complete. It can be viewed on the council’s website www.durham.gov.uk.In practice 95 per cent of bus journeys will be unaffected by these changes.

On Saturday 2nd April Ferryhill Indoor Bowls Club held their second annual event the ‘Councillor Magee Shield’, made possible by the local councillor Charlie Magee.Eighteen juniors entered the event from all over the county. There were seven from Ferryhill, six from South Shields, three from Houghton-le-Spring and two from Darlington. The day was a success all round and it was very tight in the running for first and second place, and third and fourth place. The winners were Jamie Brass of South Shields, Gary Embleton of Houghton and Ben Cairns of Darlington. “Well done to them and everyone that took part,” said a spokesperson. On Sunday 3rd April five juniors of Ferryhill were called up to play in the Durham County Junior 2nd Leg against Northumber-land. slip and that is exactly what Ferryhill skip Noah Cummings didn’t do while the other Ferryhill skip Joshua Jolly cut it really fine with his team. The result from Noah’s team never looked in doubt as they were in control for all of the game with it finishing 25 – 11. Things didn’t look good for Joshua Jolly and his inexperienced team. They were 17 – 4 down and didn’t look like making a return. However, in an unexpected turn of events with ten ends to play in the game of 21 ends they made their fantastic comeback. They grabbed a spec-tacular 21 shots in those ten ends to stun their opponents and win the game 25 – 20 and help Durham remain in control of the trophy they play for each year. “Congratula-tions go to Nadia Morrison of Ferryhill, Charlie Beck of Darlington, Owen Lynn of Houghton and rink captain Joshua Jolly for not letting their heads drop and making what can be only described as the ‘most fantastic comeback ever,” continued the spokesperson.

were postponed due to the bad weather. Noah won all three games in the round robin stage and attained the top score in the exercise section. After winning his semi-final he was narrowly beaten in the final. He was awarded the cup

for the top boy in the set exercises and was runner up overall. Noah plays at Ferryhill Indoor Bowls Club five nights a week. The club is based at Ferryhill Leisure Centre which is currently under threat of closure by the county council.
