    Being in shape and being in fighting shape are 2 entirely different things. Are you ready forcompetitive fighting? Let s find out!

    Bo"ing is tough, # $no%. But &ust e"actly '() tough? # spo$e to several bo"ing trainers and from%hat they all told me, here is the bare minimum for anybody loo$ing to fight in amateur bo"ingcompetition. *his here is the + - /# #/ / you should at least be able to do all in one day ifyou %ant to compete at the amateur level

    -un 345 miles %ithout getting too tired6umprope for 30 minutes straight

    'it the heavy bag for 15 minutes non4stop

    Be able to spar %ith any amateur from any gym 7e"cluding pro4level amateurs %ith over

    extremely physically demanding. Competitive fighting doesnt purely judge on skillful executionor who fought better. It is simply a contest of points which are scored by direct hits. !uiteoften a boxing competition can resemble an awkward game of tag moreso than a "ocky movie.#n the other hand amateur boxing can also become bouts of pure aggression. $ou can be asskillful as you want but if youre only throwing %& punches a round and your opponent throws'&& it makes a hard case for judges to give you the fight.

    (hether its a lot of running or punching you need to be prepared to do lots of both. $es skill ismore important than power and endurance but only when you have reached the minimum levels ofconditioning for boxing will you then be capable of applying your skills to fights.

    5 Important Attributes For Amateur Boxing

    1. Endurance

    (hether youre executing offensive or defensive moves you need energy to do anything. If youdont have the energy to throw punches and keep your opponent off you youre pretty much deadmeat. I know you see boxers getting tired on / or youtube but thats just them getting tired

    0theyre not completely gassed out. In reality boxers are ,1/1" allowed to get tired. I once gottired during some focus mitt work and my trainer slapped me in the face and yelled 2#, 31I"124 *s he explains he moment you get tired you get knocked out. Its that simple.

    Leg endurance allows you to move around the ring, more importantly: in and out of range.Ive watched many fighters get destroyed in the late rounds because they ran out of legstrength. This is when your legs feel like cement and youre no longer able to move swiftly.ll the punching power in the world means nothing if you cant even get to your opponent.It sucks when your opponent easily moves in and out of distance while youre draggingyour legs around the ring. !uild up your leg endurance with the "umprope. #ont "ust do

    running. $umping rope ensures your legs will always have that bounce. %ou dont want to be a sitting duck on the ropes while your opponent hits you and disappears before you fire back. Ive been there do&ens of times'it sucks.

    2. Shoulder Endurance

    ()*% crucial. +nce your shoulders get tired, youre screwed. %oure too tired to throw punches fast enough to hit your opponent. %oure too tired to pull your hands back todefense when you punch. %oure even too tired to hold up your gloves to cover your face.%our shoulders run your offense and defense, without them youre pretty much a punching

    bag on legs assuming you still got your legs-. ork those shoulders in training, do the

    2. Defense

    %our opponent will average 012341 power punches per round. If you dont know how to block punches, )56)7I LL% when youre tired and every punch hurts more, youre gonna get knockedout. 6ay attention, cover your face, and protect yourself at all times/

    3. Speed

    If your punches arent fast enough to hit your opponent, youre screwed. 8ot only will you not beable to score, youre also unable to hurt him and keep him from attacking you with everything hehas. 9ake sure your hand speed stays with you throughout the fight. %ou can have all the powerin the world, but without the speed, it means nothing/ %ou can be as tired as you want, but yourhands better be fast enough to touch your opponent or else your punches will have absolutely;)*+ effect on your opponent.

    4. Power

    If you dont have the proper techni$ab, right, left hook, right uppercut, left hook, right cross.!lock the "ab with the right hand. Aeep the chin down.@

    I mean seriously, if you still have to remind yourself to keep your hands up, then youre not readyfor amateur fighting. %our stance and defense should have been automatic by now. ctually,)()*%T?I8J should be automatic by now. +ffensive moves, defensive moves, counter moves,everything. If you cant fight automatically and respond instantaneously, youre in deep trouble.

    Imagine a basketball player. ?es not thinking about how to dribble between his legs or how tomake a "umpshot. ?es paying attention to to other players in the game and deciding where hewants to be.

    A boxer in the ring should be paying attention to his opponent,not himself.

    If youre busy trying to think during a fight, youll always be one step behind your opponent theentire fight. ?ell land a "ab and as you prepare to counter his ne=t "ab, its too late because nowhes already hit you with his right hand. 8ow youre thinking about his right hand and its too late

    because hes already "abbed you again, 8# thrown another right hand. !y the time youre readyto counter his right hand it wont matter because hes throwing hooks now.

    %our opponent, mindless he may be, will walk you down and pry your guard apart withcombination after combination, while youre still trying to figure out what counters to throw andwhen to do the fancy shoulder roll you practiced. If youre trying to remember counters tocommon punches, you are pretty much 8+T ready for competing. )verything should be automatic

    by now.

    Stuff That Does Not Matter

    This is the stuff beginning amateur bo=ers should not be worried about.

    1. Knoc out !o"er

    I would change the wording physical ability with experience and technical skills.Athleticism is part of the experience and tech skills in combat sports. Its stupid when

    people whos been in a few fights during high school are signing up for an amateurtournament after training for like a week although theyve been smoking, drinking,

    popping pills for several years.

Lifting weights to train for bo#ing is li"e doing sprints to run amarathon. & was a powerlifter before & went into bo#ing and the difference was

    %ast night i )as sparrring )ith a !6 lb partner. i )eigh !2 lbs. )e )ere sparring and he hitme )ith a couple of good right crosses. this )as the first time i tried sparring for 5 fullrounds. + )as feeling *ery fatigued. )hen our trainer stopped us i felt *ery sick and *omitedEhe said this )as due to bad cardio Cy trainer asked if i )anted to keep going and i agreed.i thre) up one more time before fininishing all three rounds. ?fter sparring i ran about 2B5miles )ith little trouble so i belie*e i ha*e some)hat decent cardio.
