t’s hard to believe, but the summerhas flown by and we are anxiouslyawaiting the opening of our 2010 -2011 season. The past couple ofmonths have been filled with a terrificassortment of classes and camps aswell as a wonderful visit fromAcademy Award – winning composer,Stephen Schwartz. This worldrenowned artist spent time with ourYouth Theatre campers, participatedin a wildly popular Inside the Civicsession and shared valuable insightswith the Godspell company. In addi-tion to being the first Broadwaymusical written by Mr. Schwartz, theoriginal cast recording of Godspellalso brought him his first GrammyAward. I hope you already have yourtickets for Godspell as opening nightis quickly approaching.

And speaking of tickets now is the perfect time to purchase yourseason subscription. You’ll saveup to 40% off regularly priced tickets and enjoy early reservationprivileges. And best of all, you canchoose exactly which productionsyou want to see. You’ll find moreinformation regarding season sub-scriptions on page 3 of the spotlight.

One of our goals at the Civic isto keep theatre affordable. We areable to keep our subscription andsingle ticket prices in line because of the support we receive fromfoundations, our endowments, andprivate donors like you. Without thistype of support ticket prices wouldundoubtedly be much higher thanthey are now; perhaps as high as $45or $50. We know that would affectmany families, making it difficult forsome to participate in an 81-yearcommunity tradition.

Last month I had the pleasure ofhaving lunch with the ExecutiveDirector of the Arts Foundation ofNew Zealand. He was on a fact find-ing mission regarding philanthropy inAmerica. His visit included stops inWashington D.C., New York, Portland,Los Angeles and Kalamazoo. Hepointed out that Kalamazoo waschosen as a destination because ofthe philanthropic commitment tothe arts found in Kalamazoo. It wasexciting to hear that our community’ssupport of the arts is recognizedaround the world.

As an arts organization, some ofour most valuable philanthropic

assets are our endowment funds. These funds were establishedthrough legacy gifts of all sizes, whichhave been left to the Civic overthree generations. The funds help us continue to provide quality educationand entertainment experiences toour community and speaks highly ofthe individual and corporate commit-ment to the Civic in our community. It is also one of the simplest gifts tomake. We are proud to announce thecreation of the Spotlighters Society,a planned giving society formed tohelp identify and celebrate thecommitments made by individualsinterested in making the Civic a partof their legacy. If you or a member of your family have planned a giftfor the Civic and are interested in theSpotlighters Society and how toleave a gift to the Civic, please feelfree to contact me to talk moreabout how your gift will ensuremany more lifetimes of quality theatrein Kalamazoo.

By MoliéreTranslation by Richard Wilbur

October 8 – October 23, 2010Parish Theatre | Classic

The religious fraud Tartuffe has wormed his way into the affections and household of richmerchant, Orgon, with pantomime piety and counterfeit zeal. So comprehensively has hehoodwinked Orgon that he looks set to succeed in driving away the son, marrying the daughter, seducing the wife and imprisoning Orgon. Full of wit and humor (and a bit naughty at times)this superb translation infuses the restoration comedy with an entertaining mix of witty poetryand contemporary phraseology. Adult Situations

Directed by D. Terry Williams this classic play features a cast of Civic veterans, which includesBrigette Morrison Sitarski, Justin Garascia, Kelly Dominique, Kyle Sparks, Marte Cole, MattMcCormick, Max Hardy, Mike Salerno, Miriam Bat-Ami, Nora Lise Ulrey and Trevor Stefanick.Adam Jeffrey Pasen, Andi Foster, Brad D.
