Lower North Coast Basketball
Last week the Lower North Coast, 15’s Basketball Gala Day was again held at Port Macquarie. There was a great turn out from teams around the area and as per usual BCS sent some of the finest players in the region. Joven Walker, O’Shay Tyerman, Ky Grace, Darra Caldwell, Ben Brown, Ma Williamson‐Roe, Jom Narksawad and Locky McEwen did us proud, claiming a solid victory in their first game against Kempsey High School, where they won by nearly 30 points. The second game was yet another whitewash with the Bowra boys pumping Westport by more than 20 points. Their third game was against the old rivals Macksville and was a much more ghtly contested match but despite the best efforts of MHS, Bowra came out on top yet again and progressed to the Grand Final. The boys had a ten minute break and were back on the court to play against Melville who they lost to by only three points. A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the boys for their efforts on the day, it was a pleasure for me watch them play for nearly three and a half hours and smile all the way. Pure Resilience. The school is proud of you. Go Bowra!

P R I N C I P A L ’ S M E S S A G E
Over the next few weeks I will be taking a team of teachers to visit other Central Schools around the state. This is an a empt to celebrate and share our success, improve our prac ce by observing others and developing collegiate links. We will be visi ng Uralla, Walcha and Bulahdelah Central Schools this term and possibly others next term. I look forward to sharing our stories with the school community in future newsle ers . Congratula ons to our basketballers who represented the school last week. We were defending our tle as Lower North Coast Champions and unfortunately lost the Grand Final by three points to Melville High School a er leading for most of the game. To make the Grand Final, we beat much bigger schools from towns with established basketball programs and stadiums. Mr Le Cerf was very proud of the team, their sportsmanship and courage. We also sent a large team to the Primary District Athle cs Carnival in Nambucca Heads with several students making it through to the next level. Thank you to Mr Rushton and Sharon for providing our students with this opportunity. Strategic Plan 2018‐2022 The NSW Department of Educa on released the five year Strategic Plan with the vision ‘To be Australia’s best educa on system and one of the best in the world’. The plan includes 10 goals. Each fortnight I will be discussing one of the goals and how it relates to Bowraville Central School. We start with Goal 1 – ‘All children make a strong start in life and learning and make a successful transi on to school’. This goal is mely as last week we had our first Kindergarten
Transi on Day at the school and welcomed some of our Kinder class of 2019. Next year we are hoping to run a stand‐alone Kindergarten class as our enrolments are strong. This will provide these students with a strong start to schooling. We will be working closely with Bowraville Preschool to ensure a smooth and successful transi on. Children who make a posi ve start to school are more likely to: feel comfortable, relaxed and valued feel excited and mo vated to learn have good rela onships with others develop a sense of belonging within the
community
It is important to recognise that star ng school involves a number of changes from their current se ng to the school se ng including the physical environment, rules and procedures, rela onships and learning. To op mise the chance of a successful transi on I encourage parents to a end the transi on dates and speak to the staff at the school.
Leaving School Grounds In the last newsle er I discussed that students are only able to leave the school grounds with permission of their caregiver, thus handing back duty of care responsibility to them. I also discussed this at the Secondary Assembly last week. At Bowraville, Year 11 and 12 students have been given the privilege to sign out at lunch. Due to repeated poor behaviour from some of our students, I will be revoking this privilege star ng Monday 20 August. All students will need to remain at school unless signed out by a parent. We will consider re‐insta ng this in Term 4. Community Survey Your opinions are valuable. Last year we conducted a community survey using Google Forms. This survey was successful and we are going to run the same survey again to compare our growth and areas of concerns. If you are interested in doing the survey you can go online by clicking on the link below which will also be posted on the school Facebook page and Skoolbag or a paper version is available in the front office. https://bit.ly/2MutMdc NAPLAN Online Readiness Students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be par cipa ng in a readiness trial for NAPLAN online over the next few weeks. The transition to NAPLAN online across Australia commenced from 2018 with the likelihood that our students will sit the assessment online in 2019. The hope is that NAPLAN Online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. NAPLAN Online features ‘tailored testing’ which gives students questions that are more suited to their ability – resulting in better assessment and more precise results. For more information about NAPLAN online go to the website https://www.nap.edu.au/online‐assessment Best Regards, Dave Taylor
PHONE NUMBERS If parents/carers have changed their phone number. (especially mobile) it is important to let the school know in case of emergencies. Please let us know on 6564 7162 or send a note with your child. It is also important for parents/carers who wish to contact their child that they ring the front office and not the student’s mobile phone. Students are not permi ed to use their mobile phones during school mes for a number of very good reasons.
PCYC Nations of Origins 2018 Na ons of Origin is a mul faceted sport, cultural, educa on and leadership program which culminates during NAIDOC week annually. The program has four main components: reconcilia on, educa on, cultural iden ty and sport. Cultural iden ty is a focal point of the project with all teams represen ng their community under their tradi onal local Aboriginal na on name from their area, with uniforms adorned with totems of their Aboriginal na on. Na ons of Origin has quickly become the largest Aboriginal youth spor ng event in NSW with more than 3500 par cipants since the incep on of the program in 2015. Students Roshaya Flanders, Jayminya Ducke , O’Shay Tyerman and Tyrell West were lucky enough to gain posi ons in the Gumbaynggirr Dolphins rugby league teams who par cipated in the 2018 program held in Raymond Terrace NSW. Roshaya and Jayminya have kindly wri en a recount of their unforge able experience. “Na ons of Origins was so much fun. We made heaps of new friends from all around the state, we even met rela ves that we didn’t know we had. Both the boys and girls teams did really well. The Gumbaynggir Dolphins boys came first in their pool and won the ‘Plate’. Unfortunately the girls’ team got knocked out in the finals. Our girls’ team won 4 games and lost 3 which meant we had an overall placing of 4th in our pool. Na ons was one of the best experiences we have ever had, we hope we can go again next year”.

LAW CHANGE FOR BIKE RIDERS UNDER 16 Children under 16 are now legally allowed to
ride on footpaths in NSW.
Law change gives green light for teenagers to ride on footpaths As students return from the winter holidays, many teenagers will no longer have to navigate traffic on busy roads while riding their bikes to school. Children aged up to 16‐years‐old are now legally allowed to ride on footpaths. This change is also a great opportunity to discuss the rights and responsibili es of riding on the footpath, considera on for others and the dangers of driveways. Encourage your students to discuss why this change has occurred ‐ what are the benefits and issues for pedestrians. SMH article on law change
