Improvements include a net extension, centre wicket increase and a grant has been submitted for the grand stand.

We have entered an arrangement with HPCT which will see us getting some admin assistance and 1 Day clothing sales being done from HPCT.

The way the club is communicating with players and supporters is getting better and this should continue.

Chairman’s Report 2017/18

The 2017/18 season was another very successful one for the club, both on and off the field.

The Kingborough Adapt Junior Academy in 2017 saw a group of boys and girls develop their skills under the experienced eye of HPCT Director and coach, Mark Divin. We again thank Mark and his assistant coaches for their dedication to this role, which translated to impressive performances by the academy participants throughout the season. The Board acknowledges the ongoing and generous support of Peter Sandars and the whole management team of Adapt Australia, which I note, has continued with the 2018 academy now in progress.

Premierships to our Senior Women’s team, 2nd Grade Men, u/17 boys and u/15 boys, as well as the u/18 boy’s vacation competition topped off a consistent season that saw the Knights win the Club Championship for the third time in four years.

Our players collected 13 prizes at the CTPL Rodwell and Fazackerley Awards including five in the teams of the year – Jo Jones, Lauren Hepburn and Emily Divin (as Captain) for the women’s team and Clive Rose and Nathan Freitag for the men’s team.

Page 12: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

The club had representative players in all levels of Australian Cricket – demonstrating (again) that we truly do provide a pathway for cricketers in the Kingborough region to reach their potential.

This time last year we welcomed a number of new members to the Board. They, together with those of us who have been around for a while, worked hard to ensure the club functioned effectively. The collective effort has ensured we continue to develop as a club evidenced by the score received in the recent biannual review of all premier level cricket clubs across Australia. This tireless work places us in a strong position to further develop our players and facilities.

The significant activities that occurred during the season include:

1. Much work has been done to progress the grandstand development. The State Government fulfilled its election commitment by transferring $550,000 to KDCC’s grant account. The planning phase is well progressed (plans are on display for your perusal) and, at the time of writing this report, we were preparing to obtain fabrication/construction quotations. The design allows for most of the fabrication to occur off-site – minimising disruption to our cricket operations during the season. It is anticipated that the ribbon-cutting ceremony will be approximately 3 months after awarding of the contract. We are hopeful that the grandstand will come in under the value of the grant. If this is the case, we intend to ask the state government for permission to use any surplus towards a new scoreboard. The addition of these two facilities will bring the venue up to the standard required to host tier 2 matches.

Page 11

2. The initial lease arrangement between Kingborough Council and KDCC/KTFC expired at the end of March. We have been in negotiations with the other parties to protect our clubs interests and ensure the best outcome for our club. At the time of writing this report, a new lease has not been signed (we are operating under an extension clause of the previous lease). However we have reached in-principle agreement of a workable arrangement. A heads-of-agreement between the two tenant clubs is being developed, which will detail rights such as access ( very important given that the football and cricket seasons overlap with competing needs) and responsibility (also very important given that Council have an increased expectation on the clubs to cover costs associated with maintaining the facilities to an acceptable standard).

3 The Board is looking to create a paid administrative role to take some of the load off volunteers. This will provide a contact point for new and existing members, facilitate more function centre bookings (an important income stream for the club), seek additional sponsorship opportunities, and improve the overall professionalism of the club. This is an extension to the arrangement we had with High Performance Cricket Tasmania last season to provide administrative support, and will complement the contributions of our dedicated volunteers.

Speaking of volunteers; to all of them I say “thank you”. The club simply wouldn’t function without their efforts. Without naming individuals (and risking overlooking some), I acknowledge the Board, the Roll Patrol, our caterers, bar manager and bar staff, our clothing co-ordinator, our social media and website contributors, the covers crew, coaches and assistants, and everyone else who played a part in making this a fantastic club to be involved with.

Page 13: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

It has been a privilege to work with a group of passionate and talented Board members again this past season. I’ve taken the decision not to nominate for Board next season, however I will continue to assist the club by managing some of the ongoing projects I’ve already mentioned.

I note that our treasurers, Helen and Tony Coad, have also chosen to step down. They took over this role at a difficult time for the club and, through careful management, have steered the club back to financial stability. It is thanks to their efforts, together with all who have contributed so much, that we can look forward to a strong future.

Finally, I wish the incoming Board and the entire club all the very best for Season 2018/19.

Go the Knights!

Page 12

Head Coach ReportI would firstly like to thank the board for displaying faith in me by appointing me coach for the 2017/18 season. In particular John French, Paul Vincent and Sarah Ward for their support and guidance throughout the year.

The playing group have got their just rewards by attaining the club championship for the 2017/18 season. It is great to see the club achieving this after narrowly missing out on the club championship last year. It is a direct reflection of the hard work put in by previous coach Tim Scott, that, I this year wanted to build on with the help of Nathan Frietag (Assistant Coach), Andrew Henley (Fielding/U17’s Coach) and the senior playing group.

Unfortunately for first grade they had a disappointing season finishing 6th on the ladder, after losing Harry Evans who decided to go back to Sydney after a terrific season with the knights last year. This left a 1000 run hole in our batting line up, but also gave the opportunity for a few youngsters to make their mark on first grade cricket. It was exciting to see Joshua Pride, Connor O’Brien and Josh Henley make their first grade debuts this season, I’m sure first grade will see a lot of them in the coming seasons.

If I’m honest first grade were very lucky to make the 20/20 final this year thanks to our big bash ring-in Nathan Reardon who hit 150 runs in 3 games for the knights carrying us to our first and only final for the season. Taking on Sandy Bay’s star-studded line up, the bowling group did a great job to keep them down to a total that was achievable. Unfortunately our batters couldn’t get the job done, but fought valiantly till the end. I’m sure everyone has learned from the experience and we will go one step further next year.

Page 14: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

Although first grade didn’t have the season they would have liked it is encouraging to see consistent performances from the other grades. Even more exciting to see was that all other grades made grand finals this year, which in a whole is a great achievement by the players.

Here is a summary of the achievements by the teams-

2nd Grade – comfortably topping the table at the end of the season and making it to the grand final is a great achievement by all those who played second grade, led by Shane Holland (2nd XI captain). Particularly impressive was Connor O’Brien’s hard fought 80 in the Grand Final on an uncharacteristic juicy wicket at the Twin Ovals. His composure throughout that innings showed a lot of maturity and also gave his teammates a score to defend, which they did successfully. Well done to all those involved. A special thanks to Andrew Henley (Fielding and U17’s coach), who was there most Saturdays to help 2nd grade with their warm up.

Page 133rd Grade – did a great job in finishing second on the ladder at seasons end. Led by the experienced Justin Direen, 3rd grade made the final but was unfortunately out played by a very strong and experienced Clarence side. Our young 3rd graders fought till the last ball was bowled. It was pleasing to see so much fight from the inexperienced playing group. Justin did a great job in teaching them how the game should be played and I am hoping he continues on as 3rd grade captain next season to help transition some of the U17’s players into senior cricket.

U17’s – finished on top of the ladder and dominated their age group, and only losing one game for the season is a tremendous effort. Andrew Henley (coach) and Mitch Owen (Captain) did a fantastic job this year and I look forward to seeing the development of this group of juniors into senior cricket next season.

Our junior talent has always been a strong department of this club since I arrived here in 2014/15. This year was no different with all of our junior premier league teams winning their respective grand finals. We also had 7 juniors get the chance to represent Tasmania at the national carnivals during the year. Our state representatives were -

Dylan Hay (Captain of Tasmania U/19’s)Josh Henley (Tasmania U/17’s)Mitch Owen (Tasmania U/17’s)Jacob Glover (Tasmania U/15’s)James Scott (Tasmania U/13’s)Cowen Radcliff (Tasmania U/13’s)Zac Curtain (Tasmania U/13’s)

Nathan Freitag (Tasmanian Tigers Futures League)Beau Webster (Tasmanian Tigers)

Page 15: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

Nick Buchanan (Tasmanian Tigers)Jackson Bird (Tasmanian Tigers and Australia)

The senior playing group and coaching staff are aware of the areas that need to be improved and also areas that as a club we are strong in. Our challenge is to keep improving our skills as well as to start challenging each other on the way we think about the game.

In summary it was a successful year for the club in terms of attaining the club championship. It shows how good the depth of the club is at the moment and considering the age demographic of the majority of the club it is a great achievement by the playing group. I challenge the playing group and the coaches to take on the learning’s from last year and build on them for the coming season. We cannot afford to rest on our laurels and stop striving to improve, as each year our competition is getting better and better. As Tim Scott said last year we need to raise the bar if we want to be in contention of holding on to some silverware. The talent we have in our group is the best in the state, we now just need to be the hardest working playing group and we will get the success that seems to be only a fingertip away.

Overview Milo and T20 BlastAt the youngest end of the club there are once again some very positive signs. Every season the number of children participating grows. Thank you to the efforts of High Performance Cricket staff and Kingborough’s own senior players Joshua Pride and Connor O’Brien who, ensured the smooth running of

Page 15the Milo and T20 programs respectively. This year it was fantastic to see teams from Kettering and Margate join the program. The large numbers of children and parents in our region at Twin Ovals every Monday night was a fantastic sight; again, well done to HPCT for making this such a success. Also thanks to all players and parents who assisted with the activities and modified games.Category 1 and Category 2 Twilight CricketAfter the tireless service of Damon Ratcliffe (now playing an equally big role helping co-ordinate across 2 U13 and an U15 team) in previous years, this year we recruited the services of several new coaches and team managers. With 3 Category 2 teams and 2 Category 1 teams, a huge thank you for their efforts in taking control of their respective teams this season. There was a ground swell of interest in a mid-week training for the boys and the club provided the services of a number of its 15-17-year-old players to help coach the next generation of Knights. This was a great initiative of the club and a big thankyou to the boys who ran the sessions: Mitch Owen, Josh Henley, Blake Sculthorpe, Aidan Donovan, Kayne Wouters and Jack Ross. All sides contain plenty of promising talent for the Knights future. A big thankyou also to a number of the boys (and the parents for making it happen) who regularly filled in and played games for the U13s on the weekend, a great way to extend your skills at the next level.U/13 Youth

Page 17: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

The U13 roster was bursting at the seams with interest and we managed to fill 3 teams, and we couldn’t do this without coaches stepping up, thankyou Sean Conry, Jeremy Ayliffe, Jud Direen, Brent Conway and the many others who helped throughout the season. The Kingborough Gold team was the youngest of the 3 teams and it was pleasing to see the growth in the team over the year that saw them reach the grand final of the Black Division. The Kingborough Black and Knights teams also proved to be tough opposition in the Purple Division, with the Knights boys going down in a very close grand final. Congratulations to all boys involved. Some of the boys who played in the U/13 roster rotated and played with the U/15 teams during the season. The children benefited greatly playing up in this age group. A big thank you to, Tim Scott, who gave up his time to help train the U/13 Black and Knights team, and Damon Ratcliffe how helped manage players across U/13 and U/15 teams.

Page 16U/14 GirlsThis year the club was extremely happy to be able to enter 2 U14 Girls teams led by coaches Leah Wierenga and Marc Owen. Both teams were extremely competitive throughout the year winning more games than they lost. It was great to see the development of the players throughout the season. This is a young group full of talent and enthusiasm. The future looks bright for the next generation of senior women’s Knights. Thank you to the parents who put up their hands each week to help make the season a success,U/15 YouthWe were lucky enough to have Cooee Direen take on the coaching role this season for the U15 boys. A big task with 2 youth league teams and a premier league team. Cooee coordinated and ran trainings thoughout the whole season. On the weekend we were very pleased to have the experience of Tony Daly and Tim Scott step in to coach the 2 youth league teams. With a mixture of U/15 boys and younger boys playing up an age group from U/13 it was rewarding to see the teams gel throughout the season and play some fantastic cricket. U/15 Premier League Thank you again to the efforts of Cooee Direen who coached the Premier League team this season. Managing the whole U15 group at trainings took a big effort and we cannot thank Cooee enough. The talent on offer in this age group was evident throughout the season and spots in the Premier league were prized. Sixteen boys represented the club in the U15

Page 18: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

Premier League team across the season, and there were a number unlucky not to get an opportunity across the season such was the depth of talent. After losing there only game for the year in the T20 grand final, the team responded strongly going on to win the one-day competition grand final. Thank you to the tireless efforts of the parents with game day duties and Emma Coulson for her role as team manager Representative CricketThis year the club was very proud to have 7 Kingborough players represent the state: Meg Harrison (U/12 Girls), James Scott (U/12 Boys), Cohen Ratcliffe (U/12 Boys), Zac Curtain (U/12 Boys), Jacob Glover (U/15 Boys), Mitch Owen (U/17 Boys) and Joshua Henley (U/17 Boys). All of the players featured very strongly at the respective national championships.

Page 17

We also had over 20 boys and girls represent the club in the State Championships across U/13-U16. This is a fantastic achievement and looks promising for the Knights future.

Finally, I would like to thank all parents who helped out umpiring and scoring it is a thankless task but without you we would not be able to play.

We look forward to the continued support for the development of junior cricketers at the Knights in the future.

1st grade report – 2017/18 SeasonSeason standing – 6th – 37.0 points

It was an up and down season for the KDCC first grade. Under a new coaching structure with Clive Rose taking the reins from Tim Scott, and with new assistants Andrew Henley, Marc Owen and myself supporting Clive.

We as a playing group we set high standards for our season with the aim of playing finals as we had done in the previous 3 seasons and with a similar player list to previous years we were confident heading into the season.

Starting the season well things were looking good for first grade with four wins on the board from the first four games. Three close hard fought wins against UNI, New Town and South Hobart/Sandy Bay gave us belief that if stayed in the contest for long enough it gave us every chance of victory. After those games we went to onto a 7-4 win-loss ratio at the Christmas break with our confidence

Page 20: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

high heading into the New Year and in the process making the T20 final. Although coming out on the losing side of the match it was a great effort to reach the heights of another final.

Heading into the back end of the season, with confidence high and in the hunt for another finals berth, things just didn’t go our way. A few well below pair efforts against Clarence and UNI combined with a washout, a game abandoned (which was no fault of our own) and a shortened match against South Hobart/Sandy bay which we lost all but ended our hopes of finals. On a positive note we were able to finish our season on a high with a win against New Town, where we played a brand of cricket that we missed in the games prior.

Positives for our club are that we had three teenage debutants in Joshua Pride, Connor O’Brien and Joshua Henley. With proof our junior system is on track to produce first grade players. Other positives to take from our season-

23 players played first grade this season suggesting our depth is strong Rhys Ward had a break out season for the club with his bowling and executing plans at a

very high level We welcomed Brady Jones back into our team after a short absence, his immediate

performance and impact on the group was first class. Clive, Beau, Jackson, Nick Buchanan and myself all represented our club in Tasmanian

shield/2nd 11/Big Bash colours. Nathan Reardon joined our squad for a brief period during the big bash, his performance

and willingness to get involved was greatly appreciated.

Overall not the season we had hoped for, but hopefully a learning experience for all 23 players involved in season 17/18.

2017/18 Second Grade Captain’s Report

The concept of winning a Second Grade premiership has a unique place within a cricket club. It provides a sense of pride and fulfilment on one hand yet leaves so many people involved wanting more. As a club, we pride ourselves on winning First Grade premierships first and foremost, then Club Championships followed by success down the grades, however, the significance of this season’s Second Grade triumph should not be underplayed.

Second Grade is a multi-faceted phenomenon. Its purpose is to develop players of the future and prepare players for First Grade cricket and beyond, whilst winning games of cricket and contributing the quest to be competitive and ultimately win Club Championships and premierships. This season, we achieved all of this.

For the player development piece of the puzzle, twenty-one players played Second Grade this year, all of whom earned their place, contributed to the success of the team and were competent at this level. Five of these players played Second Grade for the first time, most of whom performed well enough to be the main contributor to a winning performance during the season, two of whom also earned selection for their First Grade debuts. Nine players from our grand final team played First Grade during the season with the other two players in that team most certainly having the ability to do so into the future should they continue their hard work and dedication.

Page 21: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

When it came to match day, we had an extremely talented group each week with players performing well enough most games to push their case for First Grade selection alongside players who had earned their spot with strong performances in Third Grade or solid contributions in Second Grade from previous weeks. We coupled this with simple but effective plans and a focus on playing a team orientated brand of cricket and having the confidence in ourselves and each other to execute our skills under pressure.

Throughout the season our bowling was our strength as a team, which gave us great confidence we could win most games if we scraped together a competitive score. Amazingly we had five bowlers take twenty or more wickets for the season, with the highest tally being twenty-two from three players. Couple this with the fact the one five wicket haul for the season came from outside this group of five players and you have an even spread of the workload and a constant threat to opposition batting line ups.

This is not to say our batters didn’t contribute because they certainly did that. The sole century from the season also came from a player who didn’t play in our grand final team, however, scores of seventy-plus from two experienced players and two young players, multiple fifties from our top two run scorers and handy contributions when needed from players right through the batting order provided us enough winning scores. It was this formula that led us to the ultimate success with an individual scoring 55% of our total in the Grand Final, giving our bowlers something to defend and ultimately winning the game for us.

Whilst I have clearly left names of individuals out of the summary of our season to ensure I don’t miss anyone, the people who made great contributions to the team’s success know who they are and have been acknowledged accordingly. I’m delighted these performances were rewarded with the ultimate team success in this grade and excited by the grounding this season will provide to launching some individual careers that will contribute to First Grade premierships into the future.

Having focussed on the team within the team that is the players within Second Grade, we are intrinsically aware the club is made up of so much more than the players. It is at this point in time I would like to acknowledge the individuals that gave so much to our team this year.

The efforts of Sarah Ward week after week cannot be overstated. As Secretary of the club, Sarah puts in hours of work on a weekly basis before even turning up to the ground on a Saturday. Sarah then morphs into a scorer, the preparer of team sheets, a pseudo parent for the team and occasional provider of pain killers. My role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing what the players need on match day, and for this I’m extremely grateful.

Page 20The support of the coaches was unquestionable and appreciated throughout the season. Clive and Nathan as the figureheads in this role were always open, honest and supportive of me in my role as captain. We had some challenges along the way, but the way these guys handled themselves in this role for the first time, following on from the legacy left from Tim Scott was outstanding. Their guidance and opinion on game plans and the roles of individual players helped ease the load for me on match days and their efforts and commitment to the hardest and most thankless task, team selection, were outstanding.

Whilst speaking of coaches, the efforts of Andrew Henley were greatly appreciated week in, week out. Not only does ‘Mammy’ coach our Under 17 team on Sundays, he’s at training Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, his daughter’s games on Monday and often seen in the nets on a Friday because he can’t get enough of the place. For him to then come most weeks to Second Grade and facilitate our warm up was a massive help to all the players. Whilst putting out the cones or catching and hitting some balls on a Saturday morning doesn’t sound huge, as a captain it allowed me to focus on the team, the game and my own preparation and as a team we all noticed the feeling of being under prepared when Mammy wasn’t there in this role, which often led to a lower level of performance on the field.

To John French, Simon Burgess, Paul Vincent and the KDCC Board, thank you for the work you do to run this club and thank you for supporting the nomination of me as Second Grade captain this season. The term ‘thankless task’ gets bandied about a lot in reports such as this, as does something along the lines of ‘the unseen work you do behind the scenes’ but the way you rally the troops and go about the general running of the club, including increasing requirements from Cricket Tasmania and the added burden of running a function centre, is

Page 22: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

truly admirable. To those on the board members who have been in roles for a number of years and are stepping aside from your roles, from a player and former board member, a massive thank you.

To all the volunteers who allow players to simply turn up, train, play and buy food and drinks from the bar, another massive thank you. From the early risers who ensure that when we arrive at the ground the covers are magically not there to the roll patrol team still making the best in the business, our hard working clothing coordinators, bar staff and anyone else in the volunteer space I may have missed, thanks on a job well done.

In closing, I’m proud to say Season 2017/18 will forever be known as a premiership year for Second Grade and I’m privileged to have been a part of it in my role as captain. The feeling of being a premiership captain did give me a sense of fulfilment, but also left me wanting more. It left me excited to see what all players in the group can achieve and I look forward to seeing many of them contribute to First Grade premierships, Club Championships and perhaps even another Second Grade premiership in the years to come.

Cheers!

Shane HollandKDCC Second Grade Captain 2017/18.

Page 213rd Grade Report

Season 2017-18 for 3rd grade was a big challenge for our playing group as we were chasing a third consecutive premiership.

The team consisted of some young, up and coming talent, and also saw the return of Blair Harrison from interstate, who was an asset to the team and created great morale around the club. The philosophy was to create a team full of competitors regardless of talent.

There were some standout performers throughout the season, four batters scored centuries Blair Harrison (2) Lincoln Street, Henry Prichard and Nathan Vincent. Will Poland was also one of the best performers with the bat scoring in excess of 250 runs and averaging above 40.

The bowling attack was also very strong, which was shown through the spread of wicket takers, eight in all took more than 10 wickets during the season. Euan Rodgers and Sam Oliver each took a 5 wicket haul in matches during the season and Matthew Bigwood led the averages with 17 wickets at an average of 14.41.

It was a strong season and we finished second on the ladder losing only three matches, which set up a semi-final against Lindisfarne at Lindisfarne.

Page 23: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

We unfortunately lost the toss and were sent into the field; however we got off to the perfect start with Lindisfarne being 2/0 very early on. Wickets continued to fall regularly and we had them all out for 64, all the bowlers bowled well, but Will Poland with figures of 4/11 and Justin Direen 2/4 caused most of the damage.

Our batsman were put under pressure by good bowling from the Lindisfarne attack and our total was looking to be a small one, but thanks to opener Will Poland 36 and an extremely mature innings from the young Blake Sculthorpe 48, we managed to get the score to 128. Lindisfarne began their second innings with 9 overs left in the day and at stumps they were 1/20.

No play was possible day 2 so we advanced through to another Grand Final.

Our Grand Final opponents were the undefeated Clarence at Kangaroo Bay. We lost the toss and fielded and even though we bowled and fielded well we were unable to get any wickets until the final session of the rain effected day, Richard Lancaster (2) and Will Poland (1) were the only wicket takers, Clarence at 3/280 were in the box seat.

Day 2 started with rain washing out the first session and part of the second which gave us no other option than to call the game. It was not the way that we wanted to finish the season and not what the team had been striving for and I’m sure many are left with a burning desire to go one better again next season.

Page 22Within the squad I was given great support from many teammates but particularly Euan Rodgers, Lincoln Street and Blair Harrison who took on important leadership roles in my absence, also thanks to Richard Lancaster who gave up his time on numerous occasions, some of those at short notice, to fill a void within the team and in doing so he qualified and became a valued member of our finals campaign.

I’d like to thank the Board for giving me the privilege and opportunity to be a leader at the club, it’s a position I really enjoyed. To Clive and Nathan for entrusting me with the youth of the club, there is so much talent to be harnessed in this group.

To my wife Caz I’d like to thank her for her support whether that was at home looking after the family or at the games assisting the team and at times taking on scoring duties and writing match reports.

I wish the club all the best for the new season which is fast approaching.

Judd Direen.

Women’s Captain’s ReportWhat a season for the senior women’s team - 2017-18 CTPL Women’s Premiers!!!

After experiencing a couple of seasons where we struggled to find consistency, our fortune certainly turned this year. We welcomed back Mark Divin as coach and he brought with him clear individual and team plans that proved incredibly valuable to our group.

The girls put in a strong pre-season and we had a number of girls put a significant amount of effort into their games and both they and the team certainly reaped the rewards of those efforts.

We sat down as a group at the start of the season and set ourselves the main goal of making the grand final. We also set ourselves some batting, bowling and fielding targets to work towards each game and reviewed these at the end of every game to keep ourselves accountable to each other and to achieving our goal of being on the park in the last game of the season.

We started the season with a comfortable win over Lindisfarne at home and from there we grew in confidence and ability every time we took the field. We had only 2 losses throughout the year, a 2nd game loss to North Hobart and a mid-season loss to New Town where Hobart Hurricanes import Nicola Hancock single handedly got New Town over the line in their run chase.

Our bowling unit was without doubt our strength throughout the season. Leah Wierenga was a standout performer, taking the new ball every week and had the incredible ability of

Page 25: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

consistently knocking over the opposition’s top 1 or 2 batters. With Bonnie Davies at the other end and Kristy Coppleman regularly coming on at first change, we were able to put opposition teams under immense scoring pressure early in their innings. Their luck rarely changed as we still had the competition’s 2 leading wicket takers Lauren Hepburn and Jo Jones to bowl through the middle and late overs with valuable contributions also coming from Alice Kelly, Ellie Dick and Liz Bain with the ball.

We regularly achieved our bowling targets, only twice conceding more than 100 runs throughout the entire season and regularly taking 6+ wickets per innings.

Our bowlers were supported in the field by some strong fielding efforts with good catches being taken, though this will need to be a main focus heading into the 2018-19 season as we did miss a lot of chances and let ourselves down at times with some lapses in concentration and lack of composure in this area. Our general ground fielding however was by far the strongest collective effort we have had in the women’s program and I am confident that with another pre-season and increased fielding volumes, our catching will continue to improve as well.

We were benefited this year by a stronger batting line up with the return of Rachael Styles, Jo Jones and Lauren Hepburn to our middle order. With Louise Maddock continuing to improve at the top of the order and Kristy Coppleman chipping in with some match winning batting performances, we were able to get enough from our batting group to support our outstanding bowling efforts. It was pleasing to be able to get some increased time in the middle for some of our younger players including Bonnie Davies and Ellie Dick and we look forward to seeing them continue to improve with the bat next year.

Page 24We started the season lacking some match awareness with the bat, ability to take quick singles and turn 1s into 2s but with constant focus at training, we improved significantly in this area. This was ultimately demonstrated in the grand final with a better than a run-a-ball 50+ opening partnership without a boundary being scored. It proved to be a critical component of our batting performances and will remain a strong focus heading into next year.

We were fortunate to have two keepers in our group in Rachael Styles and new KDCC player Tammey Anderson though when both succumbed to broken fingers we had the good fortune of handing the gloves to Alyssa Small who did an outstanding job behind the stumps in their absence. Unfortunately due to work commitments, Tammey was unable to return for the season but we look forward to having her return to the group for next season.

We consider ourselves extremely lucky to have Em Coad and injured player Lauren Hay step into on field duties when required and performed outstanding off field roles for us. Their dedication and commitment to the group was incredible and both played valuable roles in support of our on field performances. We hope to see them out on the field more next year!

The on and off field contributions from every player in our squad led to a 2nd place finish on the ladder after the regular season. We continued to build and improve as the season went on and with our batting group finding its groove and our bowling unit continuing to execute our plans to a tee, we inflicted a heavy defeat over previously undefeated Clarence in the final roster game. We entered our semifinal against New Town full of confidence and after restricting them to 102, were able to control a comfortable chase, reaching the total 2 wickets down in the 19th

over. With top placed Clarence falling at the semi-final hurdle, we came up against a SHSB side who were strengthened by the inclusion of 2 Hobart Hurricanes captains in Corinne Hall and Isobel Joyce - to the outsider it seemed too big a challenge for our side but within our group we had ultimate belief. We won the toss and chose to bat first. With a first wicket partnership of 55, we got off to a great start and reached 3/128 from our 20 overs. Corinne Hall got SHSB off to a solid start in their chase but when Kristy Coppleman came into the attack and knocked over her middle stump and Leah Wierenga followed up with another key wicket of Linsey Da Costa the next over, we were up and about! Isobel Joyce did her best to guide SHSB home but ultimately the pressure from our bowling group and fall of regular wickets left SHSB 20 runs short. It was a fitting end to our season, where regardless of the opposition, our ability to stick to our team plans and execute them under pressure resulted in an outstanding team win and some much deserved silverware for the club and for the girls. A truly hard fought, well deserved and well-earned win!

A few thank you’s - to Mark for his enthusiasm, passion and coaching wisdom that undoubtedly contributed to our success, to Sarah Ward for being a critical part of our off field team (what would we do without her!) and to the broader club, board, sponsors, volunteers and supporters for their continued support of the Women’s program and for celebrating our Grand Final success with us.

Page 25To the girls - 2017-18 was a year that presented us with an incredible opportunity to achieve something special, and their commitment, enthusiasm, hard work and trust ensured that we made other clubs turn their heads to look at how we were able to achieve the success that we did. We had a wonderful group of people, fantastic depth throughout our group and everyone played a critical role in achieving our success. I’m super proud of all the girls - I loved sharing the season with them all and am looking forward to 2018-19 and taking the field as the ones who will be hunted by the rest of the competition.

Next season will present a slightly new-look side with the retirement of club legend Kristy Coppleman. Kristy has been an integral member of our side since its inception into the competition and it is yet to be seen how her loss will affect our group. I am extremely confident however that with the depth in our squad, we will have plenty of hands up to take on the challenge which may well see the rise of another club champion.

We will also lose Louise Maddock to University Cricket Club on a scholarship and we wish her all the best in her future cricketing career.

Congratulations again girls - what an awesome season!

Page 26U/17 Boys Captain’s Report

The 2017/18 season proved successful for the Kingborough U/17 Boys’ team, reaching the ultimate achievement of a premiership.

With a win/loss ratio of 12/1 (including finals), respectively, as well as one draw and two washouts, the talented playing group, with guidance from experienced coach, Andrew Henley, proved too strong for the rest of the competition.

As discussed by the playing group prior to game one, the U/17 Boy’s strived to be depicted as ‘the team to beat’ in the competition. With this in mind, the boys took to the field against a young, but talented, Lindisfarne line up in round 1.

The result certainly portrayed the desired depiction, with the boys coming out 125 run winners. With confidence roaring, the next two games proved to be reality checks for the playing group, drawing a two-gay game against North Hobart followed by what was the only loss all season, defeated by ladder leaders (at the time) Clarence.

Page 28: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

Questioning, ‘what was going wrong?’ the leadership group and the coaches came together and relised that the level of enjoyment was low. With this, for the next game the group had a main focus of having fun, not only in the field, but also while batting and bowling. While identifying this at an early stage in the season, the group then put together some excellent performances, which saw the contribution of many individual successes. This then led to 9 consecutive wins, resulting in the group being very confident heading into the finals.

The semi-final saw the boys take on New Town, a dangerous opposition. Previous encounters would suggests that the Knights boys should comfortably get the win, but being a final, coach Mammy kept all the boys grounded, knowing that anything can happen being a final. The winning streak continued, with the boys comfortably bowling New Town out for 105 in the first innings, stand out bowler; Cam Walter with 2/24 off 12 overs, including 4 maidens. The Knights batting innings was started in usual fashion, with Mitch Owen (42) and Zach Adams getting the boys off to a flyer before the fall of Adams for 45 off 24 (1/85 from 9 overs). The ship was then steered by young gun, Jimmy Glover, who topped scored with 58 off 66, resulting in a 121 run lead going into the second innings. With light fading on the final day, the New Town boys decided to call it a game and conceded defeat, which ultimately resulted in a grand final position for the Knights boys.

Page 27With the win streak now at 10 games, there was nothing short of confidence leading into the grand final against Clarence, the only team to defeat the Knights throughout the regular season. The toss was won by the Knights and as we finished on top, Clarence needed to force a result, so we sent them into batting, ultimately putting the pressure on them from ball one. With a strong start in mind, opening bowlers, Cam Walter and Jake Hayers removed both Clarence opening batsmen for 0. With the ideal start, the Knights knew the pressure they put on the Roo’s batsmen had to stay high. And that it did. The Knights finished day one bowling Clarence out for 75 (C. Walter 3/19 off 12, including 5 maidens and J.Hayers 3/9 off 6, including 3 maidens) and finishing 2/134, with Mitch Owen (49) and Zach Adams (50) getting the boys off to the perfect start with a 102 run opening stand. With a 59 run lead overnight, rain played a factor in day 2 two, concluding the game, leaving the Kingborough Knights U/17 boys’ team premiers.

The satisfaction of winning the premiership is due to the many hours of time, effort and passion portrayed by all the coaches and supporters, especially the coach, Andrew ‘Mammy’ Henley. The success of the U/17 group is a true reflection of the commitment Mam puts towards the under 17 group and the achievement of a premiership is a credit to himself and his family. On behalf of the whole playing group, I would like to say a huge thank you to Mam, as he contributed to the majority of our success in season 2017/18.

To the other coaches, in particularly Clive and Fritz, thank you for the constant support and advice you would provide the under 17 group throughout season 2017/18, it was greatly appreciated.

A final personal thank you to the U/17 group of season 2017/18. The common stresses of playing and captaining a cricket team was made easy by your commitment to our team. You all made it an enjoyable environment where we could get the best out of each other while competing, thank you.

U17 girls report

More positive progress occurred during the 2017/18 Kingborough District Cricket Club u17 girl’s season.

With this being the fourth year of this competition running, it has been good to see new girls participating in the sport, the strengthening competition, the new inclusion of umpires and the opportunities for the girls to play on turf.

The KDCC u17 girls’ team was comprised of many young players, many pushing up from the u14s team. This is great to see, with girls getting exposure to a higher level to cricket at a young age and playing against senior girls to improve their game. In addition, a positive to learn from older u17 players like Bonnie Davies and Eloise Dick.

With lots of help from the club, other coaches and players, the 2017/18 u17 girl’s squad improved out of sight as the season progressed, and they pose as an exciting prospect for seasons to come and later on in CTPL senior women’s competition.

Page 30: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

For the first time in u17 girls Tasmanian cricket, the games were umpired by registered and trained umpires; giving the girls a taste of high level cricket, learning cricket etiquette and the fundamental rule of respecting the umpires.

For the second season the girls were given chances to play on turf grounds throughout the season. It was great to see the girls play on a different surface and help develop their game. This will also help the girls when they transition in senior cricket and when called up for representative teams (which all girls are capable of achieving).

In conclusion, it has been another very successful season for the u17 girls. Throughout the season the girls fluctuated between first and fifth -sadly just missing out on the top four at the pointy end of the season. This squad shows great potential for the future and hopefully finally cracking the top four next season.

Thank you for another opportunity to coach a great bunch of girls.

Lauren Hay

VALE KEITH SCHMIDT (1921 – 2017)

The KDCC lost one of its finest cricketers on 4 Oct 2017 when its Team of the Century captain passed away just short of his 96th

birthday. Keith was a product of the Huon and because of WW2 he didn’t play TCA cricket until 1945 at the age of 24. He made up for his late start by playing TCA cricket for the next 24 years retiring in 1969. His accomplishments were incredible and he was a wonderful gentleman as well.

Keith’s KDCC Playing Career 1st Grade 1945 - 1962

Page 35: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

He was the 2nd most successful leg spin bowler in TCA History with 487 @ 16.91 each.He was probably considered to have been a better batsman scoring 7096 runs at a good average for playing on poor 1950’s wickets. His total of 154 catches was the 4th highest in TCA history. He was the most reliable slips-fielder I ever had the pleasure of bowling to and he was 45-47 years of age at the time. When he retired from 1st Gd cricket he played 6 more seasons in 2nd Gd playing in the same team with his life time mates in Don Randell, Ray Stringer and Ron Bradburn. He had 2 years of playing golf, but Don Randell convinced him to return in 64/65 In the 1966/67 Season he scored 656 runs at the lazy average of 164.00. In the Semi Final in 67/68 he had reached his century at Eady St when his bat broke leaving a 30cm piece laying on the pitch. He did not change the bat but threw the chunk away and continued on to reach 167 which enabled the KDCC to score 499. During those 6 seasons he took a further 144+ wickets and scored a further 2000 runs all between the ages of 41 and 48. In March 1969 he decided that the golf course was easier on his body and he played golf at the Huon Valley GC for many years naturally off a single figure handicap. He was also made a Life Member of the HVGC.

Keith also played 23 intrastate matches and represented the State with distinction in 16 matches. That should be plenty of evidence why he was named captain of the KDCC Team of the Century in 2001.

VALE Mrs Fay Stringer

It is with much sadness that in October 2017 the KDCC lost one of its longest serving members. Fay Stringer was associated with the Club for 71 years from the 1946/47 Season. Fay was willing to complete any task asked of her in her early life and those tasks/achievements were

Scorer for the KDCC in the 1946/47 State Premiership FinalScorer for the 1st Grade Team for many years from the mid 1950’s to the early 1960’s.Scored for the West Indies in the 1961 Tasmania vs West Indies match in HobartServed on the KDCC Ladies Committee during the 1950’sSecretary of the Club from 1960 – 1965Patroness of the Club for more than a decade

Page 36: BOWLING · Web viewMy role as captain would be multiple times more difficult if it wasn’t for Sarah’s organisation and contribution each week, allowing me to focus on providing

For her service she was elected to be the first female Life Member of the KDCC in 1983. Fay was the wife of the KDCC stalwart and fellow Life Member Ray Stringer who arguably played the most number of games for the KDCC from 1941 to 1973. Their son Darrel made it a family trifecta being granted Life Membership in 2012.

To show respect to Fay and her family the KDCC players will wear black armbands in all the matches starting on Sat 21st October 2017
