Bowling at the Bay

From our Chairman… Jim Wraight

Dear fellow members

My prediction in the last issue about the sun on our backs has finally come true, at last we’ve got some nice bowling weather. I welcomed our new bowlers to the club in the last edition and I have to say that they have settled in well and are really giving us their support. On the subject of support, Ken is still having to ask players to put their names down for week end games. it’s sad that we struggle to put out even five triples especially on away fixtures. So I must ask all of you that don’t support your club on away games to let your committee know why.

Is it because it’s too expensive, just don’t like playing away, donʼt like to travel, transport, takes too long, too old,  or any other reason, please let us know.Remember that if this trend continues the only people we will play are those in the Shepway area! Away games are our lifeʻs blood and after all they do us the honour of visiting us! On a lighter note Kath Rudman and yours truly are still in the Shepway mixed pairs having played three rounds to reach the quarter finals. Finally I must thank the Ladies for the help they give us in the Menʼs matches, I know they  have a full fixture list and manage to turn out for us as well as doing the Teas and Hot Dogs.Enjoy the rest of the Season,

Your chairmanJim$   [[[[[[[[ Contents: Issue #10 August 2013

Notes from Captain Ken

Greetings ! I hope that you are all enjoying the season, after the cold and windy start summer has finally arrived. We can now complain about the heat !

Support has been good, but could be better from some members. I have played many sports in the army, but I find bowling is the most sociable game I have played, a game that gives us the opportunity to meet new friends and test our skills on different greens, and although we all like to win, the final result is not the ‘be all and end all’.

I would like to thank the committee and other members of the club who contributed and ensured that we had yet another very successful BBQ Day. A lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes, and I am grateful for their help. Remember, we are a club and need the support of all members at all times, particularly in setting up the green and preparing for matches, the social events which are arranged for the benefit of everyone, and particularly ensuring that we can field full teams for our matches.

We unfortunately will not now be hosting the Shepway Finals Day, and Hudson and Easton Cup Finals

Finally, enjoy the rest of the season, and may the bowls be with you ! Ken [[[[[[[[

Obituary

Most members will now have heard of the sad loss of Gordon Massie who passed away on the 22 May. A quiet and polite man, he had been a member since 2003, and was a regular attender at the Roll-Ups, and occasionally put on a club shirt at weekends. Harold Francis knew him best, having been friends with Gordon since their schooldays, and wrote this :

Gordon and I both started our school lives in 1935 at St. Mary's Higher Grade School, which was then in Dover Road. Together we were both evacuated to South Wales on the 2nd June 1940 to a village named Llangybi in Monmouthshire. Like me again he obtained a  Scholarship to the Harvey Grammar School which at that time was in Merthyr Tydvil in Glamorgan. On leaving school he worked for the Post Office for a while and then started his National Service in the RAF where he made his career. He travelled extensively during his time with them and retired as a Wing Commander. He was also a gliding instructor.

We extend our sincerest condolences to his wife Yvonne, and the family.

Editor’s Blog

My apologies for the late arrival of this issue, as some of you may have noticed, I have not been around much this season, having reluctantly had to join the ranks of the sick and incapacitated ! I must express my thanks to Julie Baker, who has helped me greatly in this issue with the events on the green that I have missed this season.

I now have a few Roll-Ups under my belt, but will not sadly be playing in matches this season. Which highlights another problem, referred to by Chairman Jim on his page - members are mysteriously thin on the ground when the requirement for players in the programmed matches are sought, particularly away games. If we lose fixtures due to being unable to put out an appropriate team, it won’t be long before the club is in trouble. We have just about enough committed members to meet our league match player requirements, but they cannot be expected to turn out for every fixture due to insufficient support from the rest of members of the club. Remember, no bowling club can survive indefinitely on playing Roll-Ups alone ! The Clubhouse is also an important part of our economic structure, and if we are not entertaining visiting bowlers, or even our own members, our funds will soon diminish. If we fail to honour away game commitments, we lose fixtures.

So, please support your club ! On the green, and in the Clubhouse !

Mike

A few reminders...

1. County Competition’s entries are to be submitted by end of September for the following year with your entrance fee. The list is displayed on the Clubhouse notice board. Shepway competitions are displayed later and have to be submitted before the outdoor season begins.

2. We have found another supplier for club shirts, windcheaters and waterproof jackets. Contact Captains Sandra or Ken and Julie Baker for further information.

3. Please remember to use the large mats if there has been a lot of rain and the bowling green surface is soft.

4. Your club needs you! Can you help with teas at weekends? Men or lady bowlers; husbands or wives; social members. Many hands make light work! See Ken to let him know that you can do a turn.

Our Lady Bowlers (Or, In the Dolls’ House )

WHOSE JOB IS IT ? A question I have been asked - the answer is no one person. We are all members of the same club and everyone is responsible to keep our club and changing room tidy.Just think before you leave the green or clubhouse, is there washing up to be done, are the tables clear, is the equipment put away, does the changing room need cleaning, are the toilets locked and tidy.We are all members of the same club, don’t leave it to someone else. Kath Rudman

No Friendlies to report, unfortunately, but the Ladies League to date indicates that they are having more success than the men !

Memories Kathy Rudman

When I joined the club in 1982, I had moved from Wales 10 years earlier when Barry and I married, we now had a 4 year old daughter and I didn’t know many people, we had met Eddy Shrubsole and Dessie Hart in the Two Bells pub and they suggested we join the bowls club. What a welcome we all received Nicola was spoilt by all the members, there was always someone to entertain her on the green and she had a wonderful time and Barry and I enjoyed our bowling.

Wear Bay is quite unique in the sense that it really hasn’t altered that much. Still the same club house and changing rooms though the gas mantles have now been replaced by ELECTRICITY. I can remember going to Look In Hardware store to purchase calor gas at the start of the season.. And ladies, we have a flushing toilet now, I will not go into what it was like before only to say it was only used in a real emergency.

Uniforms were a must. The ladies wore white skirts and tops and the all important blazer. We were even expected to wear the official hat and gloves and wait for it ladies , tights or stockings, sheer torture in the hot weather. The Men all wore white shirts ties and blazers , if it was very hot the captain made the decision and said ‘Gentlemen you may remove your ties’, this was usually accompanied by a cheer. Thankfully that has all gone, dress code is a lot more flexible ladies can now wear trousers.

The social life back then was fantastic with functions for nearly everything. There was even a special display which was put around the bar area for Halloween, with witches and spiders very effective. At Christmas and New Year there was usually a fancy dress party there were not many members who did not attend, but that was in the days when there was little technology no I Pads or Tablets ( not the ones you swallow)I hate to admit it but I thought WiFi was that game you play on the television, I said to Nicola when we were passing BrickFields look they do Wi Fi why would they want it in a restaurant. I won’t tell you what she said.

Meals after the games were very grand. Captains and officers sat on top table, tables were laid always a full ham salad purchased and supplied by Jack Smith and Dianne Page of Warren stores (both members).

There was a billiard/snooker table ( I was told it was a very good one as it was slate based) this was very popular with bowlers and social members alike and competitions were played on a regular basis.

A game called poker dice was played regularly, this was great fun, we would all stand around the snooker table (special boards were put over the top to protect the baize) and we all put in 5p. The dice would go around until a score of 21 when the winner would then pocket the money. It was customary to enter the money on the Christmas draw sheet. The Christmas draw was also a great occasion, always held on a Friday evening and most members would attend, with 50 or more prizes it would take all evening, and many cardboard boxes were supplied for members to take their bottles and prizes home.

Friendly Matches

27/04/13 Lyminge at Home’

An unfortunate start for us - an 86 -120 defeat at the hands of our friends from Lyminge. Only two of our six triples,Jim Wraight with Bob Hills and Frank Barraclough b Vice Captain Colin Blake with Tom Webb and Roy Tutt were successful, winning 23 - 10 and 16 - 14 respectively.

04/05/13 New Romney Away

The second friendly of the season met with unexpected but welcome success on the lush green of New Romney. Three triples each, but a decisive 118 - 88 overall scoreline, thanks mainly to once again Jim Wraight, playing with Julie Baker and one of our new bowlers, Nigel Brett. They romped home 30 - 13, after being 5 - 0 down after the first three ends ! Also successful were Evelyn Alexanderʼs triple with Roy Tutt and Fred Palmer, winning comfortably 24 - 12. Captain Ken Watkin, with John Whibley and Ladiesʼ Captain Sandra Tutt completed the list with a 20 - 11 victory which materialised after a tough game up to the 13th. end, when they were only one shot ahead.

11/05/13 Cheriton Away.

Alas, we were no match for Cheriton, and failed to win a single triple. Trounced 80 - 122, we will try and forget this one !

12/05/13 Hythe at Home.

Sadly, our misfortunes at Cheriton the previous day followed us home in the game against Hythe. Mike Johnsonʼs triple, Skipping Julie Baker and Bob Hills was our only success, with a 15 - 7 victory. The Final score : Wear Bay 63, Hythe 90.

25/05/13 Barham at Home

Still plagued by misfortune, bad luck, or whatever, we sadly failed to perform against Barham. Fielding only five of the scheduled six mixed triples, we sank to one of our heaviest defeats ever - 58 - 112. Only Vice-Captain Colin Blake aided by Tom Webb and Fred Palmer salvaged some success for Wear Bay with a 21 - 14 victory.

It’s the way we tell’em !An old Irish farmer's dog goes missing and he's inconsolable. His wife says "Why don't you put an advert in the paper?"He does, but two weeks later the dog is still missing. "What did you put in the paper?" his wife asks. "Here boy" he replies...

Page 10: Bowling at the Bay #10

Friendlies, continued.

01/06/13 Chislet at Home.

Unfortunately, another defeat, but a reasonably respectable one ! Three of our six triples were successful, Dick Stagg, Ruby Cook and Bob Hills 19 - 8, the recipients of the pens, Jaffa Tutt, Julie Baker and Alan Pierce, 17 - 10, and Roy Tutt, Terry Cook and Nigel Brett, 17 - 12. Jaffaʼs triple was all square at 7 - 7 after ten ends, but pushed in another 10 shots to their opponents three in the last eight.Score: Wear Bay 83, Chislet 91.

02/06/13 St. Margarets, Away.

Alas, another game best forgotten. Four losing triples, a 51 - 89 defeat. Holidays and illness may well be contributing to our performances, but there are some pretty fair bowlers who donʼt put their names down on the team sheets !

09/06/13 Deal at Home

VICTORY AT LAST ! Five triples, but many of our strongest players were present. Winning four of the five triples, with an overall score of 99 - 74 in our favour, Jim Wraightʼs merry men and a lady took the pens, with a well won 22 - 13 scoreline, particularly praiseworthy as they were 2 - 12 down at the 7th. end, even at the 14th. end, and the final score was the result of 20 points scored to their opponentsʼ 1 over eleven ends ! Jim was ably aided by Dick Stagg and Sylvia Coles. The other successful triples were… Geoff Fisher, Barry Pape and Joyce Barr, 25 - 20, Mike Johnson, Jim Quaife and F. Palmer, 22 - 21, and Mick Kearney, Frank Barraclough and Alf Ames, 17 - 15.

15/06/13 Cheriton at Home.

They whopped us earlier in the season, but we were at home this time on a familiar green… They came, they saw, and they were conquered ! Again, we were able to field one of our stronger teams, and with four of the five triples tucked under our belts we could overlook the 28 - 11 drubbing on the triple we lost ! The ever reliable Jim Wraight with Judy Clark and Alan Pierce sorted their unfortunate opponents 28 - 10, who, despite equalling us in shots over the five ends, never looked getting into the game. Mick Wallace, Mick Rainer and Roger Jones were the stars, however, with a comprehensive trampling over a Cheriton triple that sadly mustered only 4 shots. The pens were never more deserved, with the 26 - 4 drubbing handed out.

Colin Blake, Ray Punnett and Tom Webb,17 -10, Ken Watkin, Jim Quaife and Roger Jones, 22 - 10, were our other successful triples. Final Score: Wear Bay 104, Cheriton 63.

Page 11: Bowling at the Bay #10

16/06/13 Gateway at Home

Now, in fairness, we rarely, if ever beat Gateway nowadays. I can’t recall a victory over them and nothing changed as a result of this game. Despite our high confidence from the previous two games, it wasn’t enough to hold Gateway at bay… Wear Bay or any other…We managed only one winning triple, that of Mike Johnson’s, with Terry Cook and Bob Hills. Two shots over the last two ends saw them just scrape home 12 - 11. Match score: Wear Bay 62, Gateway 90.

22/06/13 Folkestone Parks at Home.

Five mixed triples, and with four going to us, despite a drubbing on Rink 3, we scraped home to a 91 - 83 victory. Winning triples, with the pens going to Kathy Rudman, John Whibley and Roger Jones, 28 -11, and Jim Wraight, Alf Ames and Val Whibley, 28 - 18, and who pulled away strongly from 17 all at the 13th. end, and finally Mick Wallace, Jim Quaife and Pat Jones, with a comfortable 16 - 10 result. A satisfactory afternoon playing a team we don’t often beat !

23/06/13 Charing Away.

We shouldn’t have lost this game, but we did. By the closest of margins, 73 - 75. With three winning rinks out of five, and one tied, a disastrous defeat on Rink 5 for our one unfortunate trio, (who shall remain nameless !) sealed our fate. If the rampaging Charing triple could have been satisfied with just a 24 - 7 victory, we would have won the match ! To avoid assisting identifying our three unfortunates, the winning triples scores only: 16 - 12,19 - 8, 17 -15 (That was an excellent result - Charing were two shots up with two ends to go.) Sufficient to say that Mick Kearney, Alf Ames and Ray Punnett won the Gold Award, the coveted pens !

29/06/13 Sellindge at Home.

Oh Dear ! We received a right thumping from our friends at Sellindge… Winning just two of the six triples, our opponents turned on the pressure in the other four handing out a 29 - 7 and a 30 - 13 thrashing in two of them. Despite a fighting 24 - 8 win for Dick Stagg, Julie Barr and Bob Hills, we sank without trace 88 -132. Jim Wraight, Jim Quaife and Don Peerless were the other successful trio, winning 15 - 9

30/06/13 River at Home

A battle Royal - three triples each, 104 - 101 to Wear Bay ! Barry Pape with Dave Harding and Alan Pierce finished strongly with nine shots on the last three ends, to make a comfortable 26 - 16 scoreline. Ken Watkin leading R. Waters and F. Palmer held on despite a late challenge from River to win 24 - 14. Peter Fagg, with Frank Barraclough and Tom Leftley kept their noses in front to record a satisfactory 17 - 14 success.

Page 12: Bowling at the Bay #10

Friendlies, continued

06/07/13 Ashford Rail Away

Sadly, we could only muster five triples for this fixture, and against the expected strong opposition, only one of them secured a win. Jim Wraight, Alf Ames and Alan Pierce managed a 17 - 14 victory in a game that see-sawed one way and the other. Suffice to say, we lost overall 59 - 92, but the tea was great !

14/07/13 Barham Away.

Again, only five of the required six mixed triples could be put together, with fourladies participating. Despite winning three of the five, we unfortunately lost 77 - 88. The successful Wear Bay triples were: Barry Pape, Julie Baker and Bert Tutt, 21 - 14, Jaffa Tutt, Roy Tutt and Dave Tutt, 18 - 15, and Dick Stagg, Bob Baker and Alf Ames, 12 - 11.

20/07/13 Ashford Town at Home.

The ladies were unable to field a triple in this match which is traditionally of six triples, five mens and one ladies. The men, however, were not unduly inconvenienced as they proceeded to win three of them, and secured an emphatic 86 - 71 victory. The pens were awarded to Jaffa Tutt ,Frank Barraclough and Bob Hills for their 21 - 10 victory. The other two successful triples were: JimWraight, Geoff Fisher and Alf Ames, 17 - 12, and Ken Watkin, Don Peerless and Jim Quaife, 15 -12.

21/07/13 Tovil at Home.

Unfortunately Tovil could only muster three triples and a pair for this game, and sadly none were able to master the Wear Bay bowlers. All four games went to Wear Bay, giving us our best win of the season to date, 101 - 57. To average 25 shots a game is excellent bowling, congratulations to all concerned - who were, as it happens, Mike Johnson, Colin Blake and Pete Caton, 34 - 6, Ken Watkin, Roy Tutt and R. Waters 21 - 10, Jim Wraight and Jim Quaife 22 -18, and Mick Kearney, Dick Stagg and Bob Hills, 24 - 23,, who dropped nine shots in the last three ends, but just held on.

Stop Press!

Mick Wallace, playing with Justin Avery of Folkestone Park, won the Mens’ Pairs at the Deal Open Competition event recently. Congratulations to both bowlers.

Page 13: Bowling at the Bay #10

The Mens League 2013

Unfortunately, Tony Brough is no longer with us to provide his entertaining reports on our League Team’s progress, so a summary of all games to date will have to suffice. The League team have not fulfilled their potential this year, unfortunately, and we remain at the foot of the table. Our two successes to date were against Ashford Rail, two triples each but an overall 74 - 65 score to Wear Bay, and Sellindge, where we won three of the four triples including a massive 45 - 3 victory achieved by Jim Wraight, Geoff Fisher and Frank Barraclough, with a 31 - 4 win for Mick Kearney, Ken Watkin and John Whibley.

With another seven games to play, there is still hope !

Some Good news !

Chairman Jim Wraight and Ladies’ Vice Captain Kathy Rudman have won through to the finals of the Shepway Mixed Pairs Competition. They beat a Sellindge Pair recently in the semi-finals, unfortunately, the scores are not known at the moment. Well done, Jim and Kath, and good luck in the final - which will be played on Saturday 24 September. Come along and cheer them on !

Club Games Captain Vs. Vice Captain

This traditional annual event this year had Captain Ken Watkin facing up to our new Vice Captain, Colin Blake. Both teams were fairly evenly balanced, and the final score of 94 - 81 over five triples perhaps indicated this, with Kenʼs merry men and ladies finally overcoming Colinʼs players. Although his team lost by three triples to two, Colin at least had the satisfaction of beating Ken, coming up from an 8 - 4 deficit at the halfway stage to put seven shots in on the final three ends, making the score 19 - 14" " " [[[[[[[

The teacher said it was physically impossible for a whale to swallow a human because even though it was a very large mammal its throat was very small.

The little girl stated that Jonah was swallowed by a whale.

Irritated, the teacher reiterated that a whale could not swallow a human; it was physically impossible.

The little girl said, 'When I get to heaven I will ask Jonah'.

The teacher asked, 'What if Jonah went to hell?'

The little girl replied, 'Then you ask him'. [[[[[[[[

One day a little girl was sitting and watching her mother do the dishes at the kitchen sink. She suddenly noticed that her mother had several strands of white hair sticking out in contrast on her brunette head.

She looked at her mother and inquisitively asked, 'Why are some of your hairs white, Mum?'

Her mother replied, 'Well, every time that you do something wrong and make me cry or unhappy, one of my hairs turns white.'

The little girl thought about this revelation for a while and then said, 'Mummy, how come ALL of grandma's hairs are white?'

The children had all been photographed, and the teacher was trying to persuade them each to buy a copy of the group picture.

'Just think how nice it will be to look at it when you are all grown up and say, 'There's Jennifer, she's a lawyer,' or 'That's Michael, He's a doctor.'

A small voice at the back of the room rang out, 'And there's the teacher, she's dead.'

Out of Action…

We still have unfortunately several incapacitated players at the moment.

In addition to Doug Hunter’s illness, Frank Barraclough had an accident with a ladder, Fred Palmer has had a serious kidney operation, Tom Webb has been rather poorly and has not played for a few weeks. Mike Burn’s health has improved after treatment, but he is not ‘Match Fit’ as yet. Hopefully, they will all be fighting fit again very soon. On the plus side, Bob Baker is back in action after a hip replacement, and Mick Kearney’s eye problems have improved sufficiently for him to play again. Captain Ken Watkin had a heart problem, but was not away from the green for long, thankfully.

Jubilee CupAnother traditional annual competition, and one whereby the losers get a free meal ! The fact that we invariably lose nowadays to our old friends and rivals Folkestone Park is not to be taken that we are too mean to pay out ! Having entertained the Park to a meal last year, we were this year visiting them to collect a meal, having lost previously. Oddly enough, we lost again… Losing three of the four triples to go down 59 - 77. Mysteriously, only two scorecards survived, and I can only tell you that Peter Fagg’s triple won 15 - 11.

[[[[[[[[ Bernard Annand Trophy

Sadly, another defeat. One shot down at the last end, Mick Kearney Ken Watkin, Geoff Fisher and John Whibley could only watch as the Broadstairs four crept in with another three shots to take the Rink 20 -16. Jim Wraight, M. Wallace Colin Blake and Mick Rainer were unable to come to terms with their opponents, and despite a rally towards the end, went down 16 - 24. [[[[[[[[

The Cox Cup

Another disappointment, as Ken Watkin, John Whibley, Geoff Fisher and Peter

Fagg fought back from a14 shot deficit at the eleventh end to 18 - 19 at the 20th, only to

see the Ashford Rail sneak five shots on the 21st, to secure a 24 - 18 victory. Really

hard luck, gentlemen !

Bowlers of the Future?

The club recently entertained pupils from the Folkestone Academy in an exercise to try and interest younger people in the game of bowls. Some 25 girls from Year 7

visited our Green on three consecutive Mondays, and were instructed by several of our senior members.

Mike Johnson and Julie Baker explaining the finer points of the game to some very enthusiastic girls ! The photographs are reproduced by kind permission of the Folkestone Herald, whose photographer and reporter were present on the third occasion. An article on the subject appeared in the 11th July issue. Other photographs can be seen on the Herald’s website:

The girls enjoyed the experience, but we shall have to wait to see if we have any new junior members as a result !
