Welcome to the final edition of our
newsletter for the academic year. It has
been a busy but productive and rewarding
end to the school year. We have enjoyed
celebrating the wide variety of skills,
attributes and successes of our pupils as
the term has come to an end and this
newsletter summarises well the things that
make us so proud as a school. Please also
have a read of our additional newsletter
produced during Be-U week, The Daily
Bowland, which can be found on the
school’s website. This was put together by a team of pupils under the
guidance of Mrs Lancaster. What they have produced is very professional
and comprehensive of activities that took place; I hope you enjoy
reading it.
The summer term is packed with special events such as sports day and
the prom, and there are many achievements to celebrate; so I’m sure
you will enjoy the information in this newsletter as well.
After another packed and successful year at Bowland, I want to thank
everybody who has contributed to the life and work of the school in any
way. Most significantly I am extremely grateful to my colleagues on the
staff, who have gone above and beyond as always to provide the range
of experiences you read about in both newsletters. This is without losing
sight of our core role of providing the best opportunities for pupils to
make excellent progress in their learning.
Thank you to everyone who has supported the PTFA this year through
working on events, attending meetings and supporting the events they
have run. This support is invaluable and I am indebted to our PTFA
Committee for all of their hard work.
Finally, thank you to all of our parents and carers for your support of the
school and your children during the last year. I hope you all have an
enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing people on GCSE results
day or when we reopen on Wednesday 4th September.

Millionaire Readers
Well done to all these pupils who
have become Millionaire Readers this
year.
It would take on average 11 days, 13
hours & 46 minutes to even count to
1 million, let alone read them!
We have Multi-Millionaire Readers
too. Bowland is blown away by your
commitment to this programme.
Well done everyone!
Summer Reads competition is back!
Open to all year groups and all staff.
Have a photo taken in which you are reading your book in an
interesting place. How about the top of a tree? On your beach lilo?

Work Experience for Jasmine
Jasmine spent a week at Bowland on work experience. In her
own words she describes her time here.
‘Each day I helped out in a different department. On Monday
I was in the science department where I had an exciting
morning setting up various experiments and even making
acid. I spent Tuesday with the P.E. department and enjoyed
my day scoring and playing in rounders matches. As the week
went on I spent time in performing arts, English and the MFL
departments. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here but the
highlights of the week for me were playing rounders with the
Year 10’s and putting up a display board in English.
Thank you to everybody for making me feel welcome, I really
enjoyed my week.’

Bowland’s 70th Anniversary
Celebrations
Bowland celebrated its 70th year as a High school
this year. On Saturday June 15th we opened our
doors to pupils and staff, past and present to help
us celebrate this milestone. It was wonderful to see
some old faces, dating back as far as pupils who
attended in 1954!
Our PTFA baked and served cream teas whilst
pupils and our food department made wonderful
cakes and traybakes to sell for the occasion. The
hall looked amazing and our current pupils did a
wonderful job of giving guided tours around the
school and answering the plethora of questions
from old pupils about the changes.
We invited former headteachers and staff to be
interviewed about their time at Bowland, their
fondest memories and what has changed about the
school. We now have a recorded memory for future
celebrations and to track the changes that have
taken place.
This was an excellent opportunity for us to open our
new gym and Mrs Connelly, wife of the former
footballer John Connelly (20Caps for England),
made a guest appearance to formally do this for us.
The whole afternoon was a lovely event, with pupils
from Year 10 entertaining guests as they enjoyed
their afternoon teas. Mr Nicholson, son of the first
ever headteacher, brought some lovely memories of
his time living at the school and we now, thanks to
his generosity, have two more trophies for
outstanding contribution to the school that have
been added to our collection.

Meeka Sings at the Waddington
Duck Race
Meeka and her band ‘The Rise’ were
invited to perform at the Waddington
Arms recently for the Waddington Duck
Race.
‘The Rise’ are performing at different
events in and around Clitheroe. They like
singing Punk, Indie and Pop music.
They had some lovely compliments from
the crowd.
Let’s Do Moor
An exciting opportunity saw the year 8 future BTEC pupils accepting an invite to an open day at the
Abbeystead estate.
During the day the pupils experienced the role of gamekeepers, the police and fire service, who all have
different responsibilities in these upland areas.
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the plucking of some carefully selected game birds, which
when cooked produced some excellent and tasty free samples for the pupils and staff to sample.

Year 10 Technology Exhibition
Year 7 Enterprise Day
Year 7 were challenged to write and produce a
book for pre-schoolers as part of our school
enterprise programme.
Pupils worked in teams to develop an idea and
write the story. They then split into groups to
produce the book, create a soft toy and an
educational toy out of wood.
Pupils presented their ideas and the books will be
taken to Ribblesdale Nursery for the children to
enjoy and decide on their favourite!
It was a fantastic day where pupils developed a
range of skills including teamwork, resilience,
compromise and time-management.
Group 1 won the competition, shown below.

Year 7 Enterprise Day
Year 8 Geography Day Year 8 have been building models of the coast and the results are spectacular.
The aim of the day was for the pupils to put what they have been learning in lessons to an actual case
study. They mapped and built coastal features of Dorset, specifically Sandbanks and Swanage.
They started by watching drone footage of the coastal area to gain an aerial perspective and then they
set out to build a 3D model of the coastline.

George is Chosen for the Rotary
Youth Leadership Award
George, a recent Year 11 leaver was selected to go on the Rotary Youth Leadership Award
(RYLA) in Grange Over Sands.
RYLA events are for young people aged 16 to 17 years, who are about to start their working lives or to
enter higher education, and who have shown leadership potential and are likely, as adults, to become
future leaders. Students are put into mixed groups of complementary ability where they take part in
outdoor activities. They are placed in challenging situations to help develop leadership and team bonding
skills and to increase personal confidence.
This is George’s story.
I was a little anxious in the run up to it as it was a week away and I didn’t know anybody else on the
course.
I needn’t have worried as once we had all arrived we started with some ice-breaker games, so we all got
to know each other and then took part in activities such as Jacob’s ladder and canoeing.
We learnt about different styles of leadership and how they can affect a team’s efficiency, and then
planned our charity car wash. We raised £230, washing cars in Windemere for the Shelter Box and
Mountain Rescue charities. We went on an expedition to the top of Coniston Old Man, one of the highest
mountains in England, and wild camped overnight. The week finished with a formal dinner and a
presentation about our week. It was an unforgettable experience and I have made some lifelong friends.
I’m really grateful to Bowland staff for putting my name forward and to the Rotary Club for sponsoring
the week for me. I’d thoroughly recommend it to any pupils who are given the opportunity next year.
George
Duke of Edinburgh Expedition
'The expedition programme this year has produced two extremely contrasting challenges for the pupils.
Whereas our practice expedition around Clitheroe and the surrounding area produced some of the most
prolonged and intensive rainfall the D of E have ever seen, the qualifying expedition produced the polar
opposite.
Looking out across the valley the early morning cloud cover soon began to burn off and the
temperatures started to rise as the groups set off for their ascent to Tosside. With a difficult start
including some unmarked footpaths, the groups needed all their resilience in order to be rewarded with
a successful arrival at Hartley's Farm Campsite.
A packed campsite, including a marquee of entertainment provided by a visiting Rugby club meant the
evening went long into the night. Saturday morning started early with a cool breeze which once again
soon gave way to scorching temperatures. The tired, hot but dedicated pupils completed the expedition
and quickly packed away ready for a cool drink. The teachers and staff's cool drink was probably a little
stronger than the pupils but no less deserved.'
