BackgroundBecoming an Outdoors-Woman® (BOW) is a nonprofit, educational program serving women internationally in the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. Dr. Christine Thomas started BOW in Wisconsin in 1991 after deciding she wanted the same outdoor experiences with her friends that her husband enjoyed. She began coordinating workshops for adult women to learn outdoor skills in a woman-friendly atmosphere. All BOW workshops require teaching a balance of hunting and shooting, fishing and boating, and non-consumptive outdoor recreational activities (e.g. camping, outdoor cooking, natural crafts).

BOW has been operating in Oklahoma since 1994. It has been hosted by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, Oklahoma State University’s Leisure Studies Program, and since 2003, by Camp Fire Green Country.

Becoming an Outdoors-Woman fosters an environment of respect for the dignity and worth of all participants, volunteers, and instructors. Diversity is recognized as an important component of the program. Bias, prejudice, discrimination, and harrassment in all forms and manifestations will not be tolerated. Discrimination based on an individual’s race, gender, religion, color, creed, disability, sexual orientation, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, pregnancy, or parental status is demeaning to all; impairs the process of education; and violates individual rights.

The LocationCamp Waluhili is located near Wagoner, Oklahoma, on the scenic shores of Fort Gibson Lake, providing camping and outdoor opportunities for over 60 years. Waluhili’s 219 acres of forest and lake shoreline offer a variety of settings, a perfect fit for the wide range of BOW classes.
