Summer brings about an almost visceral shift in our mood. Daylight extends past nine
o’clock, and every evening becomes the perfect opportunity for cocktails al fresco. The
soft, muggy air is perfumed by flowers, bonfires, and barbeques, and carries sounds
of sprinklers and lawn mowers (we won’t complain about the mosquitoes just yet).
Passersby, no longer shrouded in heavy winter coats, stroll by in bold, floaty dresses and
crisp linen pants. It’s like our world opens up and encourages us to live life to the fullest.
This issue, we wanted to capture the beauty of being bold. In our society, it can be easy
to fall into a daily routine and leave our dreams behind; we become accustomed to the
norm. We need to remind ourselves that the days most remembered aren’t the typical
nine-to-five grind, and our most complimented outfit isn’t our trusty leggings and tunic.
Summer says: Be bold! Take chances! Hold hands, go skinny-dipping, play hooky, spend
all day floating down the river with nothing but good tunes and best friends. A sense of
adventure is powerful, and through these pages you’ll recognize it.

KATIE DOSENfashion editor
She loves hosting parties, enjoys handwritten cards, and sometimes eats the entire box of Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Almonds for dinner (huge sweet tooth!). Katie uses styling as her creative outlet, but it can be dangerous because it sometimes leads to her purchasing the materials they use for shoots. She’s working on this. With the arrival of the new year, she’s been experimenting more in the kitchen and considers herself a puppy chow extraordinaire.
VANESSA HITTcreative director
This girl sleeps in whenever possible and needs her daily coffee (cream, please, but hold the sugar). But, once she’s woken up to the world each day, she rarely sits still for more than a few minutes. Full of activity and energy, Vanessa is always designing, freelancing, trying new recipes, or organizing her desk (again). Happiest with the simple things, the perfect night is one at home with her husband, watching Netflix.

Wide-eyed with an affinity for wonder. From rappelling off 20-story buildings to exploring abandoned brewery caves, this girl craves adventure. In her free time you can find her strolling the town pretending to be a foodie, salsa dancing up a storm, or at the beach writing her next best-selling children’s book (which also happens to be her first).

Laura likes fun. She is curious to a fault, and laughs at her own jokes because she thinks she’s funnier than she actually is. She won’t shake her desire for the limelight (she goes to karaoke almost weekly), and loves food, plain and simple. But mostly, Laura is seeking the next big thing while learning what it means to find balance.

Nicole Patterson is a freelance artist with multiple gigs
including Hairstylist, Makeup Artist and Photographer. She
also dabbles in painting, set design and creating,
digital arts and writing. She describes her work life as
“Career ADHD” as she can’t stick to one thing at a time.
Variety is the spice of her life and she feels blessed to be
making it happen.
SMMAKEUP
Founded by Stephanie Martin, the SM Makeup team is
based out of the Twin Cities Metro area. Their team travels
on site for any occasion, at any distance, and can
accommodate any request. They have a fun, talented
team of experienced stylists and artists and although
hair and makeup is the SM Makeup team’s job, it never
feels like work!

1. In a large sealable bag, combine lemonade, brown sugar, soy sauce, garlic powder, and mint. Remove half of the marinade to a small bowl; cover and keep in the refrigerator.
2. Add the chicken to the bag and seal well, removing as much air as possible. Refrigerate overnight.
3. Drain the marinade from the bag. Place the chicken on grill rack over medium heat. Keep covered and baste frequently with reserved marinade. When internal temperature reaches 165 degrees F, remove from heat and serve!

It’s 5:01 p.m. on a Friday. You have only one more email left to send out, and it’s an important one. One where you
really want to get a point across, and you betcha you’re going to miss the happy hour on the closest rooftop to make sure who ever is at the receiving line takes notice. It will take you longer, but you organize it meticulously—there is no way they can misinterpret this one; no way it will be ignored. You highlighted the most important parts in bold and all caps for crying out loud. Bold and ALL CAPS! That in itself is a brazen thing to do, especially here in Minnesota. You pat yourself on the back for your accomplishment of the day. It’s the little things.

Being bold comes in many forms, and sometimes, it is the little things. From making your words stand out in an email to putting yourself out there on social media—these days, being daring is the new playing coy.
Among the many ways to be bold, the common denominator is being yourself. No one knows this better than Falen Lambert, co-host of the Dave Ryan Show on 101.3 KDWB. For Lambert, this spunk is manifested as humor and honesty.
“I’m a human and I have the exact same experiences as anyone else, and I’m not afraid to say them. You take it or you leave it.”
And, many Minnesotans are choosing to take it. Lambert’s relatability has propelled her influence in the Twin Cities and the numbers show. She has established a large fanbase through social media as well as continued to make regular appearances throughout the community.
Born and raised in a small Indiana town, Lambert is no stranger to the Midwest. As a teenager who rebelled against popular style trends to stand out in her class of 35, she fell into radio because she couldn’t get a job at the mall. Lucky for her, it was a great landing spot. “It felt really natural and what I wanted to do with my life.” The aspiring DJ worked nights for years until she landed a gig in Reno, NV, hosting a morning show. It was at the end of this stint that her dream job came along.
“Minnesota was not a selling point to be honest. It was about the station and the show,” Lambert said of the Dave Ryan Show. After flying to Minnesota for her interview during February—the dead of winter—she was on cloud nine to move and get started.

Minnesota held some surprises for the fresh transplant. “It’s weird. I thought Minnesota would be stricter, [but] here I can really be myself. I can be a vulgar chick or I can be southern polite, just depends on the day.”It’s a good thing for that, because Falen has to hold her own with her lively colleagues, Dave Ryan and Steve-O.
“When choosing the job I had to find someone who would be able to take their criticism back. I’m fortunate enough to work with someone who embraces it, and encourages it and loves it when I’m mean to him. It created a comfortable environment to feel that way.”
Putting yourself out there doesn’t come without challenges, however. The new territory came with a larger audience, and in turn, more feedback—both good and bad. “You can get 45 positive comments and then you get one negative comment, and that’s the one you focus on.”
After questioning whether she should change elements of her on-air approach, Falen came to the conclusion that she got the job because of who she was and the personal information she chose to share.
“I don’t know if I’ll make an impact on the
community like Dave has, but I’ll try my
hardest to do some good while I’m in that spot.”

“It was realizing that I can be me and people are not going to like you, and that’s not an easy thing to accept,” Lambert shared.
It is this trial of existence that we all can identify with. Perhaps this is what makes her audience feel connected. From stories about her personal life to opinions about society, Falen shares it all, shamelessly and with a touch of light-hearted frankness.
There’s a fine line between being bold and being humble, and Falen has it tied in a knot and hanging from her finger. She knows her influence doesn’t come without responsibility, and that shines through in her intentions.
“I don’t know if I’ll make an impact on the community like Dave has, but I’ll try my hardest to do some good while I’m in that spot.“
Funny and Genuine. For Lambert, these qualities make up the balance of being bold. “I hope the impression they get from me is just that I don’t take myself too seriously,” she says of her followers. For her, it’s not a game; it’s not a strategy. It is a matter of being herself and making an impact on the community while doing it.
