At the same time, the floors were completed while moving down, and the earthworks were carried out as the works progressed. The curtain walls consist of an alumin-ium frame and reflecting glazing.

General description
Situed in line with a Paris historical axis, The Grande Arche in La Defense is a gigantic open cube some 100 metres wide and 110 metres high. The two sides are linked top and bottom by 3-storey decks spanning the intervening 70 metres. The entire building is clad with white marble.
Main characteristics
The top deck is hung from four 110 m long, 9.50 m high prestressed megabeams. They have a 70 m clear span, and were cast in place at the top of the building on a steel formwork gantry. Because the site was cluttered with rail and metro lines and motorways, the 300,000 tonnes of the cube are carried by just 12 bearing points (concrete piles).
