Multicultural Public Speaking Competition Congratulations to Grace Hu, Jessica W (Stage 2), Josephine and Sienna (Stage 3), who represented Bourke Street Public School at the Multicultural Perspectives Competition at Darlinghurst Public School on Monday, 5 June. As expected, our students confidently delivered engaging speeches to a crowded room on the topic of multiculturalism. They were also required to write and deliver an impromptu speech with only five minutes preparation time. There are many adults who would baulk at this task! But our students rose to the challenge and were excellent ambassadors for our school, displaying sportsmanship and acknowledging other speaker's efforts. Special mention goes to Grace Hu, who received a Highly Commended award. The students were last
seen enjoying a celebratory Messina gelato.
Ms Carpenter Public Speaking Coordinator ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Premier’s Debating Challenge On Thursday, 8 June, our Stage 3 debaters travelled to Randwick Public School for Round 2 of the NSW Premier's Debating Challenge. Bourkey's Whites argued for the negative that all violent video games and shows should be banned for children. A tough topic indeed!
Although our students put in a valiant effort, the adjudicator awarded the win to Randwick. Next up was Bourkey's Blues who argued for the negative that all school children should watch news for homework. According to the adjudicator, it was the Blues' consistent team line and strong rebuttals that helped them to claim their second victory in the competition. Well done to all the students who participated in this round - Ruby, Natalie, Saxon, Marley, Jemima, Noah, Indira and Will. Ms Carpenter and Mr Goode (filling in for Ms Bos). -----------------------------------------------------------------------
From the Principal’s Desk… The Cleveland and Chalmers Streets site will be redeveloped to create a new future focused high-rise school, with a mix of new and refurbished buildings. The heritage of the site is a major consideration for the design of the new school. A design excellence competition has been undertaken and Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp (FJMT) have been announced as the head design consultant. The new inner Sydney high school is expected to be operational in 2020. Below is the link to the DoE website: http://www.dec.nsw.gov.au/about-the-department/our-reforms/innovative-education-successful-students/newschools/inner-sydney-hs Just a reminder, that the UNSW ICAS Writing Assessment will be on Tuesday the 13th June 8am in 6L’s classroom and NOT on the 12th June due to the Queen’s Birthday Public Holiday. Band has been moved next week to Tuesday morning due to Monday being a Public Holiday. If there is a clash for some students with the ICAS Writing Assessment, children MUST attend the ICAS Writing assessment . Peter Johnston Principal
