Bourbon County FCS & Homemakers Newsletter Bourbon County Cooperative Extension Service
March 2016
While the President is away…
March 2016 We have been teased with a few days of warm weather, which has let the daffodils begin to show their heads in my yard. I hope that means Spring will soon be here! I have been able to get out and walk some, which helps with the extra pound or two put on thru the holidays and cold weather. I hope you were also able to get out and enjoy the sunshine. The daylight hours are increasing and the sunny days help all our moods. Take a walk and see all the new life around you. The birds are chirping, getting ready to lay their eggs. It is a busy time for everyone, birds and homemakers alike. I can’t wait to get my porch spruced up for swinging and relaxing, and am impatiently waiting to plant seeds in the ground. Take time to experience the wonder of Spring. It is a marvelous time of year. Ann Davis McClain

Homemakers Lesson, “Generational Differences”, will be taught to lesson leaders by Benita Peoples, Harrison FCS Agent.
Each generation is significantly different from the ones that preceded and followed it because
members of each generation have been shaped and molded by markedly different societal influences during their developmental years. These differences in perspective usually can be
attributed to generational differences. In many cases, this difference in generational perspective can lead to misunderstanding and create conflict at home, at work or in community activities.
Lesson objectives are:
1) To compare different generations’ characteristics and values 2) To analyze how changes and events in society influence generational perspectives and 3) To examine how generational values are reflected in family, work and social behaviors.
Call 987-1895 to register.

Still time to get your vote in on 2016-17 Lessons
Complete and return your ballot!
The next two pages are the Bluegrass Area Extension Homemaker Lesson Ballot for 2016-17. Please read the descriptions of each of the 12 possible lessons and give some thought as to which eight lessons would be most beneficial for you. Pick only eight! There is no need to rank them—just check or “x” the eight that best meets your needs. EACH homemaker gets a vote—not each club. The club can choose to collect the ballots and return them at one time or even tally them if you prefer, but please make sure that EACH homemaker gets a vote.
These ballots are due back to the Extension Office by March 31, so please discuss at March meeting.
Mailbox members—you get a vote as well. Please return your completed ballot to the Extension office prior to March 31.
Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Conference
The 14th Annual Grandparents As Parents(GAP) Conference will be held on Thursday, March 10, at the Clarion Hotel in Lexington. Grandparents, caregivers, relatives, and professionals are invited to attend.
Two presentations on substance abuse will be featured along with breakout workshops, free legal consultations, benefits consultations (social security/disability, DCBS family support, adoption, kinship, Medicaid and SHIP), exhibits and resource fair and lunch. Cost for conference is $5 for grandparents/relatives and $50 for professionals.
Deadline for registration is March 3, 2016. Registration packet and more information is available on our website: https://bourbon.ca.uky.edu/FamilyConsumerSciences or call 987-1895 for hard copy.

PERSONAL SAFETY
AND SECURITY Have you heard on the news, or know someone that has been robbed of their sense of security in their own home OR in the parking lot while going to the grocery? Are you aware that there are protective measures that you can take to be less vulnerable? Crime Prevention Officers, Robert Pearl and Alan Saylor will be presenting Crime Prevention information at the Bourbon County Extension Office on March 3 at 6:00 pm. Please show your support for community safety as well as home and personal safety by signing up to attend this presentation. These officers are part of the University of Kentucky Crime Prevention program and have many tips and suggestions for being proactive about crime prevention and your personal safety. They have access to UK research based information on crime and have practical, FREE sug-gestions for everyone in attendance. Space is limited so call 859-987-1895 now to reserve your seat for this free, informative program.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteers are needed to help celebrate National Agriculture Day with elementary school
students in Bourbon County and Paris schools on Tuesday, March 15th.
National Agriculture Day is a nation-wide celebration that showcases the importance of agriculture in our daily lives. It is a day to promote agricultural literacy across our country, beginning with our hometown. Sponsored locally by Bourbon County
Extension Service and Bourbon County Farm Bureau.
Volunteers are needed on March 15 to go into the classrooms to read a book and share information about local Farmers Markets. Please call 987-1895 to volunteer in this activity.
AGENT’s CORNER
Is it Spring yet? The beauty of living in a climate with four seasons is that we are periodically getting “fresh starts” and I love it. I am ready for my favorite season of the year, SPRING! The time when everything starts coming back to life and there are fantastic colors everywhere.
Spring also brings me to the completion of my first full year as Bourbon County FCS agent. I have tried diligently to listen to everyone’s needs and address them when possible. One of those request was about personal safety and security. I hope everyone will consider coming out on Thursday, March 3 to hear members of UK Crime Prevention team share tips about taking responsibility for our own safety.
The date for the Bourbon County Annual meeting has been set for Wednesday, April 27 at Bill T. McConnell’s Real Estate. There is plenty of parking and easy access. Last year’s meeting was my first large activity as an agent. It is one that I will never forget because I left there knowing I was in a job working with what I love— wondering people. I hope everyone will be able to come again this year—and bring a friend. It is a great reflection of what Bourbon County Homemakers really are. Fun, caring, community conscious, responsible citizens! Thanks for being so supportive and letting Paris know that Bourbon County Homemakers are awesome people. We are a work in progress. Kay

Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley, or another cereal grain is a grain product. Bread, pasta, oatmeal, breakfast cereals, tor llas, and grits are examples. Grains are spilt into two subgroups, whole grains and refined grains. Whole grains are made of the en re grain kernel – the bran, germ, and endo‐sperm. People who eat whole grains as part of a healthy diet have a reduced risk of some chronic diseases. Try these ps to make half you grains whole grains: Subs tute a whole‐grain product for a refined‐grain product. For example, eat 100% whole‐wheat bread or bagels instead of white bread or bagels, or brown rice instead of white rice.
