The Rock Creek/Westbridge Fire Needs Committee wants to express its appreciation for all who are work-ing so hard to help those affected by the fire. Through helping our neigh-bours, volunteering time, donating funds and items needed, and in many other ways, we are building up our community in a difficult time.

As many of you have said, we are Boundary strong!

It is important to us the commu-nity remains aware of what we are working on. We meet regularly to discuss the efforts being made to meet the needs that are out there. For

some the needs remain the same; for others the needs are changing.

Firewood was identified as a pri-mary need for the upcoming winter. While we offered some coordination, the Kettle River Lion’s Club and the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Westbridge both played a large part in having three logging truck loads of wood delivered to the Westbridge Hall, cut, split, and delivered to many homes in the fire zone.

Debris removal, danger tree as-sessment, and the rebuilding of out-buildings (such as animal shelters and pump houses) are all in process. Together with the Red Cross, we continue to do individual assess-

ments in order to know the needs out there. Please contact us if you have unmet needs as a result of the fire.

An educational session is being organized for within the month of October. This will be an instruction-al time on helping the community deal with feelings of grief and loss; it will also offer guidance on dealing with the guilt felt when one has not lost their home while their friends and neighbours have. Be watching for the date, time, and location.

As a reminder, our committee consists of Joyce Evans, Cathy Rid-dle, Ryan van Kuik and Vicki Gee. We are advised by Bob Huff (Habi-tat for Humanity) and Helen James

children’s fashions, a silent auc-tion and live entertainment. Event organizer Cindy Fairs, a director with HFH, is thrilled that her organization is able to assist some of those affected by the events of Aug. 13.

“Habitat is a humanitar-ian organization and the board of directors felt compelled to become involved,” Fairs said. “Many businesses, organiza-tions and individuals have contributed to supporting the families affected.”

She added, “This seemed like a natural fit for our organi-zation—a tragic event has taken place in one of our local com-munities and building homes

is what we do, so let’s do it. “Thus, the organization intends to raise money to build a house, with the Yellow Door taking a lead in the event planning with Habitat.”

In addition to the Nov. 7 fun-draising event, Fairs and Smith are also planning a calendar, the proceeds of which will go entirely to the house-building project. The calendar will fea-ture a series of light-hearted portraits of regional firefighters, and the Times’ Andrew Tripp has volunteered his expertise to create the images.

Habitat homes are built by volunteers and community partners and are traditionally

sold at fair market value with an interest-free mortgage, and mortgage payments that do not exceed 25 per cent of the home-owner’s income. To date, Habi-tat has built 20 homes within southeast B.C.

Fairs said, “Unlike the tra-ditional standard of selecting a family based on a screening criteria and then holding the mortgage for families that it supports, Habitat will be rais-ing funds to rebuild on land pre-owned by the homeowner.” The name of the family has not yet been released but will be announced at a later date once confirmed.

Giving baby its best chanceCynthia Garnett from Baby’s

Best Chance Program and Jac-queline Malkinson, the new public health nurse from Mid-way, held the first Quintes-sence Foundation Breastfeed-ing Challenge in Rock Creek on Saturday, Oct 3.

Two women, Miranda Holly and Raylene Tyssen, came out to support this annual interna-tional event. This event is a fun way for breastfeeding mothers to gain recognition and support for their breastfeeding efforts.

As stated by the Public Health Agency of Canada, “Breast milk is the best food to help babies grow and develop. Each mother custom makes milk for her baby that contains the perfect amount of protein, carbohydrate, fat, vitamins and minerals.”

Public Health, Baby’s Best Chance, and the peer mentors of breastfeeding are continuing to work to improve the breast-feeding education and support for Boundary women. Grand Forks has run a Breastfeeding Café for several years now and

there are plans to start a group in the West Boundary area this month.

The groups are a place where mothers can meet and greet other mothers who are breast-feeding. Breastfeeding, al-though “natural,” is not always a process that comes naturally. Breastfeeding, like breast milk, ebbs and flows with ease and success and sometimes with challenges and grief.

When we celebrate these mothers’ successes we are in no way insinuating that we think that mothers who cannot or chose not to breastfeed are bad mothers. We educate women about the benefits of breast-feeding and then support them when they have challenges but some women cannot breastfeed and the causes can be physical, emotional, mental, and social.

We support those mothers to formula feed with good attach-ment practices.

We want all mothers to feel joy and pride for all that they do with and for their babies. When a mother sets out to breastfeed,

her experience is made easier with positive support from family, friends, professionals and peer mentors.

A breastfeeding peer mentor is someone who has an interest in breastfeeding and has taken breastfeeding education and is able to support other breast-feeding. In September, five peer mentors completed an online breastfeeding course and 21 modules. Two of these are from the West Boundary: Jessi Bryan and Jennifer Mallach.

Bryan took the Breastfeeding Course because she “struggled with breastfeeding recently, so was very motivated to have new knowledge so she that can share it with moms and be helpful,” she said.

If you or anyone you know is breastfeeding and would like more information or support or is interested in attending the group to start this month please contact Kristy Kuromi or Cynthia Garnett, Baby’s Best Chance, at 250-442- 2267 or Jacqueline Malkinson, public health nurse, at 250-449-2887.

Letters Policy

It is Oct. 8 and autumn colours dominate the landscape. As well as giving us a magnificent display of the year’s

prettiest seasonal transition, the fall sees many of us reap-ing the bounty of a vegetable garden, tended carefully throughout the summer and now putting heaps of squash, potatoes and carrots on our kitchen tables and those of friends and family.

As the displays at this year’s fall fair cer-tainly illustrated, the year-round availability of fruits and vegetables has not stymied our love of home-grown produce, making growing your own or buying the fruit of a neighbour’s labour an integral part of country life and, in-creasingly, the choice of urbanites worldwide.

Fuelled by a general concern for our food supply and the ever-increasing rejection of GMO products, the popularity of Saturday morning farmer’s markets around the globe has risen markedly over the past decade, becoming noth-ing less than a mecca for those seeking an alternative to produce that simply doesn’t “taste right.”

Many consumers are troubled by the control over our food source that multi-national corporations such as Monsanto are wielding and share a need to know exactly where their food comes from.

The 100 Mile Diet, a book written by Canadians Alisa Smith and J.B. MacKinnon and published in 2007, de-scribes the couple’s successful attempt at restricting their diets to foods grown within a hundred miles of their resi-dence. The book later morphed into a television program called The 100 Mile Challenge, which aired on Food Net-work Canada.

Smith and MacKinnon’s concept continues to inspire people to source their food locally and avoid buying pro-

duce from overseas. My wife and I are fortunate enough to have a vegetable

garden, as well as a small flock of sheep, making it possible for us to produce a plate of food that was grown or raised within 100 metres of our house. Unfortunately, most of the vegetables will be gone by winter or even sooner, when we will once again have to rely on California and Mexico

for tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers. Lettuce, a staple in our household, will need to be store-bought in a matter of weeks from now, making a greenhouse or indoor vertical garden very tempting indeed. For now, though, we will en-joy what remains of the garden and get ready for next summer, which will hopefully be an-other warm one with a bit more rain!

~~~I am truly saddened by the recent closure
of the Rock Creek Hotel. I’m by no means a barfly, but certainly used to enjoy a regular visit to the pub for a hearty lunch. I found the food consistent, the ale tasty and the patio a true summer oasis. My wife and I had a post river-rafting party there the day before our wedding in 2012; we enjoyed gourmet Valentine’s Day dinners in the candlelit restaurant and several raucous get-togethers with friends and colleagues.
I will be very surprised if the business sells, despite the rock-bottom price of only $200K. By all accounts the li-quor licence lapsed, which I assume means the building would have to be significantly updated in order to attain re-licensing.
Ultimately, it will take a brave and deep-pocketed in-vestor to resurrect what was one of the longest-running licenced establishments in B.C.
We miss you already, Prospector. May you rest in peace.
Reaping the garden’s bounty
Some ATV riders are giving their fellow quad enthu-siasts a bad name by not respecting those whose prop-erty they are utilizing for their recreation.
More than ever, landowners and ranchers alike are complaining about riders driving through private property or Crown land to either access existing trails or carve out new ones.
Ranchers that lease Crown land to range their herds are becoming increasingly frustrated by the neglect of some riders to ensure that gates are left closed, often resulting in long, and, potentially, expensive searches for animals that are notorious for wandering.
A recent spate of cattle sightings on major highways may well be the result of gates being left opened or fences cut by insensitive riders. Despite there being no proof of the tragedy being caused by such neglect, the early August death of a motorcyclist who collided with a stray cow on Highway 3 just west of Greenwood cer-tainly magnified the potential harm that careless riders can cause.
There have been numerous complaints aimed at the quadders regarding the cutting of padlocks and fences and even the felling of trees, as some riders seem to have little regard for others’ property or privacy. One elderly couple in Summerland described how a “No Trespass-ing” sign they had attached near the top of a tree was removed by a group of riders, who matter-of-factly cut down the tree and proceeded to ignore the sign.
The couple described some of their encounters with ATV owners during the last several years as “disturb-ing” and, in some cases, bordering on aggressive.
In the sport’s defence, most recreational riders are respectful of the environment and actively campaign to provide it with a much better profile than that which currently exists with many landowners and ranchers in the Boundary.
As the recent ATV jamboree in Greenwood illus-trated, most riders happily comply with government recommendations regarding off-road recreation, and want nothing more than to leave the environment as pristine as it was when they passed through it.
Let’s hope those that are less considerate take a page out of their book and keep riders, landowners and ranchers all happy.
~Everyone Welcome ~
 e West Boundary Sustainable Foods and Resources Society (FAR) had a busy week in Midway recently, as it welcomed two experts to the Teddy Bear Farm to discuss and demonstrate the art of seed-saving, and, three days later on Sept. 27, held it’s annual general meeting at the Midway Community Garden.
Host Leda Fair, president of the society, used her own sizeable garden as a source for dried beans, which were then separated by Boundary Farms’ Sheila Dobie using a newly acquired win-nower.
 e machine uses a crank to create a current of air, which spins the cracked seedpod and sepa-rates the seed from the cha .  is makes the pro-cess much faster than the manual method and ideal for gardeners in areas without electricity!
 e seeds are subsequently separated accord-ing to quality and kept for up to  ve years prior to planting.
Seed-saving expert John Alcock, proprietor of Kelowna’s Sunshine Farm, provided attendees of the event with much insight as to the intrica-cies of seed saving, including the importance of avoiding bio engineered seed, which could be patented or have proprietary rights. Buying certi- ed organic seed ensures that it is not bio-engi-neered.
“Seed saving is an ancient tradition practiced by farmers and gardeners alike,” explained Al-cock. “It is easy to carry on this tradition and maintain a link to our past, carry it to the future and be connected to the Earth through one of its basic cycles; selecting, saving, planting and sa-vouring.”
Alcock also stressed the importance of se-lecting the best plants for seed, which are those true to variety.  e science of seed saving recom-mends that a gardener avoid replanting a bean that does not look like the original seed.  ose, says Alcock, should be “saved for the soup pot.”
FAR’s inaugural Harvest Home was held at Midway’s community garden, where Fair made a heartfelt statement about the impressive garden the society has established.
“ e garden was planned as a demonstration garden to showcase di erent gardening tech-niques and explore season extension ideas, ” Fair explained, “while at the same time growing vege-tables for all Boundary residents in need of food.”
 e garden is 30 metres long and 10 metres wide, which accommodates seven rows, each of which is about a metre in width and separated by approximately 60 centimetres. Each row is ir-rigated by two buried drip lines, which are acti-vated for two hours each morning and another two in the evening as required.
“ is year we began in May and worked three hours each Monday, Wednesday and Friday,” Fair said. “Our e orts were focussed on si ing the soil to remove a lot of the gravel and rocks, and to
make raised beds.” Fair estimates volunteers removed over 1,300
kilograms of rock and gravel from each row, which will be used to make a barrier along the outer edge of the garden.  ick layers of card-board will be laid under the gravel to help keep weeding to a minimum.
Work is nearly complete on all seven rows and the garden looks ready to go next spring.
Fair went on to acknowledge the assistance of many individuals during the construction of the garden, including Dick Dunsdon and the Village of Midway for establishing the community gar-den and providing FAR with such a sizeable area with which to work, as well as donating irrigation equipment. She personally thanked Dunsdon for his willingness to answer questions and make suggestions throughout the process.
Fair also thanked the likes of John Boltz, Tom Bosovich, Jamie Haynes and John Linquist for delivering components key to the success of the garden, as well as her husband John, brother Laurie, farmhand Don Huggett, Sandy and Mike Fairburn and Gloria Lautard for their untiring willingness to pitch in whenever and however they could.
Fair was also pleased to report that the society currently has over $1,000 in reserve and that they were looking forward to the 2016 season.
Fair hopes that membership will continue to increase and help the FAR Society reach its goal of cultivating a healthy and sustainable local food system.
Greenwood City Council met for its regular meeting on Sept. 28.
Committee needs new members, says Goddard
Delegate Les Goddard spoke on behalf of the Recreation Committee. He requested that coun-cil immediately appoint several new members to the committee, to allow for the commencement of work projects delayed by the departure of sev-eral committee members.
Councillor Lang informed Goddard that dep-uty clerk Wendy Higashi would have to research the bylaw regarding committee appointments and report her  ndings to council.  is would preclude the appointments from being made un-til the next council meeting on Oct. 13.
Goddard stated that work at the rink would not be able to go forward without the commit-tee in place. Council agreed to direct Higashi to examine the bylaw and make a report to council prior to the next council meeting.Board of Trade applies for signage
Board of Trade chair Jim Nathorst stated that the board had made a formal application to the city to mount permanent signage near the McAr-thur Centre (where the Founder’s Day sign pres-ently sits).
Nathorst presented a mock-up of the signage to council and the gallery, which was generally well received. Nathorst noted that the signage could be utilized by the entire community to ad-vertise events.
Council agreed in principle with the sign’s in-stallation.UBCM a “great learning experience”
Mayor Ed Smith reported on the UBCM con-vention in Vancouver that kept all participants busy with a number of workshops, forums and group discussions.
 e city was actively looking for grants for a generator, and Smith cited MLA Linda Larson’s o ce assistance in ensuring the Greenwood con-tingent got to speak to the right people.
Higashi o ered her impression of the confer-ence as being extremely busy and a great learning experience for her in her new position as acting CAO. She also suggested that next year the city should consider sending a larger contingent to the UBCM conference.Heating system installed
Mayor Smith also reported that the installa-tion of the new heating system had been com-pleted and was now in service.
– October 11 –The Boundary is in the South Okanagan - West Kootenay federal riding. There
are five candidates vying to become Member of Parliament for our riding: Richard Cannings (NDP), Donnie Denesiuk (Liberal), Brian Gray (Independent), Marshall Neufeld (Conservative) and Samantha Troy (Green Party).
Many Boundary residents feel our region is distinct from both the South Okana-gan and the Kootenays, and so the Boundary Creek Times took the opportunity to ask each candidate what he or she would do for the BOUNDARY if elected as Member of Parliament. Four candidates responded:
RICHARD CANNINGSNDP –
New Democratic PartyI know the Boundary coun-
try fairly well since my wife came from Grand Forks and we spend a lot of time there, and in the Boundary I see similarities to other interior communities that are having a hard time at-tracting working families and servicing a large seniors popu-lation.
If elected as your MP, I would work hard to assist the local government in the Boundary to access federal government infrastructure funding which provides good jobs while build-ing needed services. The NDP will increase direct transfers to municipalities and make it eas-ier for smaller communities to be eligible for these funds.
Increasingly, people are moving to beautiful parts of the country such as the Kettle Valley because of the outdoors lifestyle.
Many can work out of their own homes, but we must ensure that infrastructure elements such as broadband Internet are available to rural communities. These small businesses are im-portant job creators in Canada, and the NDP would encourage them to grow by lowering the small business tax rate from 11
to 9 per cent.Good jobs are key to keeping
people in smaller communities, and in B.C. the forest industry is often the primary employer. An NDP government would invest in forest product manufactur-ing facilities to help maintain or retool for competitiveness, and support research and develop-ment for new products, manu-facturing methods and new wood biomaterials.
Seniors are also retiring to the Boundary Country in in-creasing numbers. Many pen-sioners live near or below the poverty line, so we must ensure that their incomes are sufficient for a comfortable retirement.
The NDP would roll back the age of eligibility for Old Age Security from 67 to 65, add $400 million to the Guaranteed Income Supplement (lifting 200,000 seniors out of poverty), fix the Canada Pension Plan so that people can properly save for retirement, and maintain pension income splitting at tax time.
The frequency and inten-sity of fires is a concern in the Boundary as is water quality and quantity. Climate change and the need to lower carbon emissions is a serious issue for the NDP as is preparing for community emergencies. The NDP would restore funding to the Joint Emergency Prepared-ness Program quietly cut by the Conservatives in 2012.
As a biologist, I know that proper standards and funding to maintain clean water and a healthy environment is essen-tial.
Finally, access to good health care is an extremely important issue, and many Canadians are having a difficult time to even
find a family doctor. To allevi-ate this, a federal NDP govern-ment will help the provinces hire 7,000 health professionals and build or expand 200 com-munity clinics across the coun-try.
Health services for seniors are a particular concern; last year the NDP drafted a Nation-al Seniors Care Health Strategy that includes funding to expand home care services, help prov-inces build more nursing home beds and palliative care servic-es. And the NDP will bring in a universal Pharmacare plan for full prescription drug coverage.
CONNIE DENESIUKLiberal
The economic, social, and environmental issues which are of concern to residents of Boundary Communities share equal importance with those of the riding’s largest community, Penticton. A Liberal government will in-vest in physical and social in-frastructure projects to kick start our stalled economy. We will begin that process right af-ter the election. Connie Denesiuk, Liberalfrom page A8 tain and changing economic situation, need that help now, not in five years.
Our plan for skills train-ing funding for colleges such as Selkirk will assist with that aim. Rather than a “top down” approach, we will work with employers and labour to ar-rive at an appropriate appren-ticeship ratio for all federal infrastructure projects.
I will advocate for consul-tation with B.C. forestry and mining industry representa-tives in B.C. on diversification and value-added opportuni-ties for businesses typically located in small communities.
Environmental research to help assess and mitigate effects of climate change, in-cluding wildfires and drought, is also critical to the sur-vival of small communities throughout the Boundary. I would advocate for federal consultation with the B.C. government for improved di-saster response measures.
A Liberal government would invest $200 million each year to support innova-tion and clean technologies in the forestry and agricultural sectors, both of which are important to the Boundary economy.
As Justin Trudeau ob-served: “The environment and the economy are linked, like paddles and canoes. If you don’t take care of both, you’re never going to get where you’re going.”
Adequate social infra-structure, as advanced by the Liberal Party platform, is critical to Boundary’s com-munities. Affordable housing, seniors hous-ing, and continuation of federal funding for agencies such as the Boundary Family and Individual Services Society are vital needs.
As a further exam-ple, the Midway post office is a community gathering place, which the Conservatives’ proposed community mailboxes can never replace.
I have met with the adjacent riding’s can-didate Don Johnston to discuss shared ad-vocacy for the rural portions of our rid-ings. Small communi-ties in the Boundary are important links be-tween the West Koo-tenays and the South Okanagan, and must not be overlooked by their Member of Par-liament.
Over the past 16
months I have made regular visits to Boundary communi-ties in all four seasons. I will continue that important con-tact with constituents if I am elected as your MP.
MARSHALL NEUFELDConservative
Residents of the Bound-ary have many of the same concerns as other Canadians. Whether I’m door knocking in Grand Forks, Midway, Green-wood or other communities, I hear concerns about jobs, the economy and taxation.
The Conservative govern-ment has the only responsible position on these issues. To-day Canadians pay the lowest federal taxes than they have at any time in the last 50 years.
Income tax on small busi-nesses has been reduced to 11 per cent and we are commit-ted to reducing it to 9 per cent.
GST has been reduced from 7 per cent to 6 per cent to 5 per cent, saving all Cana-dians money on nearly every purchase.
Pension income splitting was introduced to help our seniors. The Conservative government committed to this promise to help people in
their retirement years against stanch NDP opposition.
We’ve introduced income splitting for families, saving many families up to $2,000 per year. The NDP also voted against family income split-ting and have committed to remove this benefit.
The tax savings have been so significant that the average family of four pays $6,600 less in federal tax per year than they did in 2006.
The Conservatives are committed to reducing taxes for small businesses, families, seniors and individuals.
If re-elected, we will raise the annual pension deduction limit per person from $1,000 to $2,000 and all the way to $4,000 for single seniors. This will mean that every senior household (whether you are a couple or single) will be able to have a combined tax saving of $600 per year.
At the same time both the Liberals and NDP want to raise taxes on working Cana-dians. For a person earning $60,000 annually, the Liberals propose raising payroll taxes by about $1,000 and the NDP propose raising payroll taxes by $1,500. The Conservative Party stands opposed to these proposals and in fact will re-duce payroll taxes by about $200 per year by 2017.
The NDP have also pro-posed raising taxes for busi-nesses by 13 per cent starting next year. This is irresponsible and will affect the economy. If the NDP plan is enacted, it will cost jobs.
Economists estimate that the NDP plans will cost 250,000 Canadians their jobs.
That will include jobs here in the Boundary.
If elected, I will not only work for a stronger economy and lower taxes, but I will fight against Thomas Mul-cair’s plans to bring back the failed long-gun registry.
It was just last December that Mulcair said he would register every gun in Canada if he was ever elected. A reg-istry of long-guns only targets law abiding gun owners and does nothing to reduce crime.
I will work closely with our local mayors to identify their top infrastructure require-ments and then advocate for federal resources.
All too often the needs of small communities go unad-dressed if they do not have an effective and energetic MP advocating for them. I will work tirelessly to make sure the priorities of every part of our riding are heard and ad-dressed in Ottawa.
Samantha Troy, Green Partyfrom page A9
We know that it is our fami-lies, our communities, and our teamwork that make us strong. We view the diversity of our nation, not as a liability, but rather as a shared strength and a source of pride.
As your MP for our part of Canada I would endeavour to listen to what our constituents want and to manifest those wants in a meaningful and timely manner.
 e Green Party platform is a smart and substantiated vi-sion which is committed to a sustainable economy, strong communities, good govern-ment and bold action on cli-mate change.
We will commit to establish-
ing a Council of Canadian Gov-ernments which will include federal, provincial, municipal, as well as First Nations, Métis and Inuit leaders. Together, so-lutions will be created transpar-ently and publicly.
 is dialogue is imperative in order to address each of our individual communities needs.
 ere is a serious disconnect between the unprecedented wealth produced by our econo-my and the increasing econom-ic insecurity of all Canadians. We need to immediately build those sectors that bene t from a lower Canadian dollar: manu-facturing, tourism, value-added forest products and cultural industries. We need to support small business development and community agriculture,
particularly in our region. We will shi government
supported research away from biotechnology and energy in-tensive farming and direct it to-wards organic and sustainable food production. We need to help local ranchers better man-age our water resources and also provide tools which would facilitate processing our food animals regionally. We need to address transportation, educa-tional opportunities and access to health care resources.
 e health of our democracy depends on electing MPs who are accountable to their con-stituents. Green MPs will seek constructive solutions to issues in our local communities, striv-ing to create dialogue and solve problems when they arise.
The Westbridge Thrift Store is back in full swing, miraculously unscathed by the recent wildfi re. Only metres away, properties lay charred and crumbled as the fi ckle blaze tore it’s way through the community.
One can never appreciate the signi cant importance of having local  re departments until tragedy strikes.These brave men and women within Greenwood, Midway, Rock Creek, Sidley Mountain, Beaverdell and Big White volunteer their time and dedicate many hours to training and  re practices to ensure they are ready in the event of a  re. This past season’s wild res proved how well prepared they were.
We would like to thank all the  re ghters,  rst responders and volunteers for all their dedication and passion to ensure the safety of everyone. And to the generosity of all the residents and businesses within our communities that stepped up in their donations of food, clothing, their homes and their time. You make us so proud to live in such caring and giving communities!
Thank You All Very Much
Fire Prevention Week is this week, Oct. 4 - 10.
Did you know that roughly half of home  re deaths result from  res reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep?
Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a  re in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported  re in half!  at’s why, this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme aims to keep your family safe with working smoke alarms in
every bedroom.  e o cial theme is “Hear the Beep where you Sleep. Every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.”
We hope everyone will install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleep-ing area, and on every level of your home, in-cluding the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms.
National Fire Protection Assoication (NFPA) is excited to share this important information so everyone better understands the life-saving val-ue of home smoke alarms. Visit NFPA’s “Smoke
Alarm Central” and Fire Prevention Week web-site for more information, resources, messages, videos and a fun, interactive quiz to test your knowledge.knowledge.
Provincial wild re personnel faced an unusually busy  re season this year.  e 2015 season started earlier than normal, with unseasonably hot temperatures and a higher than normal amount of lightning activity driving an increase in  re starts throughout the province.
Despite aggressive wild re activity that challenged their e orts, provincial crews responded to over 1,800  res and kept the vast majority of them small.
 e province worked closely with our neighbours in the United States, as many  res were burning near our shared border. When  res threatened to cross the inter-national boundary, close working relation-ships between jurisdictions ensured that there was solid communication and coor-dination in place.
During this season, as of Oct. 5, 1,823  res burned a total of 304,649 hectares and $277,908,183 were spent on  re suppres-sion. Of these  res, 573 were human-caused
Be prepared for wildfires too
I would like to extend my thanks and congratulations to the structure  re ghters from Greenwood, Grand Forks, Christina Lake, Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire in Trail and Big White Fire Dept who came to assist Midway Fire during the devastating Rock Creek Wild re. Your hard work and bravery was the product of many human as well as material saves during that event. In addition my sincere thanks are extended to Chief Dale Heriot, Grand Forks Fire Rescue; Chief Terry Martin, Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire; and Chief Roy Terashita, Greenwood Fire, for their incredible support and assistance to us during the  re.
And to the members of the Midway Volunteer Fire Deptartment, I can only say that I couldn’t be prouder of the tireless hard work and e ort each of you provided during most di cult circumstances. I’m hopeful all communities share the pride and appreciation for the work  re  ghters do. Again, well done and thank you! Walt Osellame, Midway VFD Fire Chief
With sincere thanks
and therefore preventable.  ey burned an estimated total of 57,003 hectares.
Responding to these wild res re-quired a major team e ort.  e crews on the ground, the air crews  ghting the  res from above, the support and ad-
ministrative personnel and everyone else who assisted were all instrumental in keeping B.C. communities safe.
Facebook site aims to help mental health
The start of the school year always marks a spike in the number of en-quiries to Child and Youth Mental Health agencies across the Kootenay Boundary. With one in five children and youth affected by mental health challenges, it’s a problem that is more widespread than many people realize.
To help bring a public face to the issue and provide a place for families, caregivers, children and youth to interact with each other, the volunteer led Kootenay Boundary Child and Youth Mental Health and Substance Use local action team has launched a new Facebook page.
“We know that when people who have dealt with mental health issues share their stories and personal experiences, it helps kids know that they are not alone,” said Dr. Cindy Loukras, one of the physi-cian leads on the local action team which brings to-gether families, doctors, represen-tatives from three school districts, mental health cli-nicians, drug and alcohol counsellors and community agencies to improve mental health well-ness in the region. “And the team rec-ognized that to re-ally engage kids and their families, we needed to get onto social media. This Facebook page is a first step.”
While many children and youth are affected by the issue, only one in six children and youth get the help they need—many have a hard time asking others for help. For this rea-son, it’s important for parents, teach-ers and friends to watch out for signs that a child or teen needs help:
• Getting signifi-cantly lower marks in school
• Avoiding friends and family
• Having fre-quent outbursts of anger and rage
• Loss of ap-petite
• Rebelling against authority
• Drinking a lot and/or using drugs
• Constant wor-rying
• Attempting self injury
Children, youth, their families and caregivers are invit-ed to visit the new Facebook page—facebook.com/KBCYMHSU—for more information and to share their experiences.
Club performs wellThe Boundary C 4-H club capped a busy
month of September with its annual visit to the Provincial Winter Fair (PWF) in Barriere.
Members competed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday in judging, weight classes, showmanship and more. Sewing members also had a fashion show on Saturday evening.
Those placing at Rally Day with their educa-tional displays were judged again at PWF, with Juniors Savanna Elliot and Analia van Kuik tak-ing first and Marijka van Kuik placing third for Intermediate.
Marijka, the club’s only photography member, placed well in her classes, including taking first in showmanship.
On Sunday evening there was an awards ban-quet and dance.
The beef division earned top group of five members with the highest aggregate score, Ranch Horse got first in stall competition and Beef got runner-up in their division.
A stall competition is a competition in which competitors are judged on the cleanliness and ti-diness of their stalls. Judges would come around the display area to check stalls and members would have to answer any questions they had.
In the Fred Nichol event, Dawson Harpur won $700 towards next year’s beef project and in the Tremlow event, Alec Elliot won $250 for next year’s sheep project.
Sheep members represented the club well, es-pecially considering this was their first year.
Boundary ‘C’ 4-H competitors did well in the beef class at the annual Provincial Winter Fair held in Barriere two weeks ago. earning the highest aggregate score.
Members competed in the sheep division for the first time this year and represented the club very well.
