Music Director Michael Butterman embarks on his tenth season at the helm of the Boulder Philharmonic while Artistic Director Ana Claire continues to build on a proud tradition of artistic excellence for the Boulder Ballet. Detailed program notes guide readers through the story of how the performances are brought to the stage. A dedicated issue also showcases the Boulder Phil and Boulder Ballet’s collaborative production of The Nutcracker.

BOULDER BALLETThe Boulder Ballet origins date back to 1982 and it has a rich history of bringing classic, contemporary and uniquely theatrical ballet to Boulder and

throughout the Front Range. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Ana Claire, the Boulder Ballet continues a tradition of collaborative performances, educational outreach and new choreographic explorations.

OPENING NIGHTSeptember 13Conductor Michael Butterman guides the Boulder Phil through a series of works, including French composer Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite. Concertmaster Charles Wetherbee will perform on violin during Fujiwara’s The Storyteller. Gabriela Montero will play piano for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

PORTRAITS IN SEASONNovember 14Conductor Michael Butterman leads the Phil through Brahms’ Schicksalslied with the Boulder Chorale, which will celebrate its 50th anniversary. Also on tap, Charles Denler will perform Portraits in Season, based on the works of Thoreau. John Fielder photography will be projected on stage. Brahms Symphony No. 2 will conclude the evening.

THE NUTCRACKER November 27-29With new scenery and the magic of the season, the Phil will perform as the Boulder Ballet brings this holiday tradition to the Macky stage. Classical choreography and ornate costumes are blended with a touch of humor to entertain all ages.

CHRISTMAS WITH THE PHILDecember 20Boulder Phil will ring in the season with a variety of music that will please the ears. Classical holiday favorites will fill the air with joy.

DANCE, AMERICAN STYLEJanuary 16The genius of Schuman, Bernstein and Copland will draw patrons fond of New England Triptych, West Side Story and Rodeo. The Boulder Ballet will collaborate with the Boulder Phil for this evening of song and dance conducted by Michael Butterman.

SPHERES OF INFLUENCEFebruary 12The evening will include renowned violinist Anne Akiko Meyers performing Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto. Also, patrons will hear Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 and Tchaikovsky’s Mozartiana.

STEPPING OUT 2016February 19-21Over the years, the Boulder Ballet has grown and flourished in its community with new offerings, such as world premiere contemporary ballets. Expect nothing less with this year’s Stepping Out 2016.

STORYBOOK BALLET – AESOP’S FABLESMarch 11-13Students from the Boulder Ballet School will bring Aesop’s Fables to life with the Boulder Ballet.

CIRQUE DE LA SYMPHONIEApril 2The Boulder Phil will unleash a torrent of sound and visuals when aerialists, acrobats, dancers, jugglers, contortionists and others perform to classical pieces.

SEASON FINALE: ST. MATTHEW PASSIONApril 23-24Michael Butterman will conduct Bach’s St. Matthew Passion to wrap up the Boulder Phil’s season at Macky Auditorium. The production will include the Central City Opera, Boulder Bach Festival and CU Choruses.

AN AMERICAN IN PARISMay 8Love abounds in this special presentation of An American in Paris that will be performed by Boulder Ballet on Mother’s Day. Company members will dance their way into the hearts of Boulder patrons.

Programming is subject to change and shows can be added, postponed or canceled.
