Boudicca The Wheelabouts produce mobile street theatre pieces built around wheelchairs, and their latest show takes us on the Roman road with Boudicca. Boudicca’s, chariot and mechanical puppet horse will move slowly around an area, pausing regularly to interact with children and adults alike. Amassing her army of little Celts, and marking their faces with blue Woad, Boudicca’s stunning chariot and mechanical horse scour the countryside looking for Romans to pick on and ‘punish’! With an onboard sound system, and armed with an arsenal of comedy props and weapons, she is searching for followers to join her army and mete out her justice to the wicked invaders. With puppetry, props and performance, Boudicca is an exciting gallop, with audience participation and plenty of comic improvisation! Watch out Romans…! Commissioned by Articulture, The Wales Outdoor Arts Consortium (WOAC) and Supported by Arts Council Wales, Boudicca was commissioned for performances in Wales in 2018. We are now roaming further afield looking for Romans to punish again…

Company Biog Helen Clyro and Rob Hill create bespoke, sculptural performance pieces, built around wheelchairs.

With a wealth of outdoor arts, community and festival work as performers and makers behind

them, they feel that being a wheelchair user should not inhibit your creativity or performance

opportunities. With this in mind, they have taken what is recognised as the traditional street

‘Walkabout’ show and adapted the concept into what they are calling…‘The Wheelabout’.

Helen

Having trained at Central School of Speech and Drama, Helen went on to work in a wide variety of

fields such as performance, puppetry, prop-making, stage management and pyrotechnics. Having

being diagnosed with MS in 2002, she now uses a wheelchair, and has moved the emphasis of

her work to less physical areas. She has since worked as a writer, teacher and Actor in roles for

Television on shows including Grantchester, Casualty, the Fast Show and more.

Rob

Rob started working as a Production Manager in the early nineties with Welfare State International.

His interest in all aspects of Production has led to a wide understanding of areas such as: Lighting

design and installation, Set Building, Prop-making, H+S, Fire and Pyrotechnics and more. He has

worked nationally and internationally with a wide range of companies including Walk The Plank,

The Lantern Company, The Fetch, Tin Shed and many more. He works as a Trainer in the UK and

internationally in Outdoor Arts, and specialises in technical prop-making, and bespoke low

voltage/portable lighting design for lantern and sculptural applications.

Cost and budget breakdown

PERFORMANCES: Each wheelabout performance lasts for approximatley 30 minutes. We can do 3 x 30 minute performances a day, but must have a 1 hour break between each show. Negotiation on this is possible to suit your programme i.e. 2 x 45 minute, instead of 3 x 30. Boudicca is mainly designed for daytime shows, but can be lit for nightime shows or processions.

SHOW COST: 1 x Day: 800

2 x Day 1500

3 x day 2200

TRAVEL: Per mile from base and return @ 45p pm

ACCOMODATION: 1 x ACCESIBLE Double. Depending on distance to venue from our base and start/end times for shows, we would need 1 x accessible double room the night before and possibly after.

Tech requirements Boudicca is designed for Street/Festival events, but will need a reasonably flat, smooth surface to work on – Tarmac or paving is ideal, dry firm grass should also be fine, however, particularly wet or eneven grass, or some gravel surfaces may cause issues for the movement of the Chariot and Horse. The more open and unobstructed the space is the better and, obviously, there should be step free access to move around the designated performance area. Boudicca will be towed onto site in a small Box-Trailer and we would need to get this adjacent if possible to our preparation area, and somewhere secure to park this for the duration of the stay. We would need:

• A covered, secure area (Minimum 4m x 4m) with Level Access to prepare Boudica’s Horse and Chariot.

• Performer changing space, or privacy in the preparation space. • A 13a power supply in the prep space for the duration we are on site,

for charging wheelchair and tools. • A trestle sized table and 2 chairs. • Security over storage of our show and equipment in this space. • Stewarding of our shows may be needed in very crowded/busy areas. • Access to toilets, it would be ideal if that could include a disabled toilet.

Set up time: From Arrival to first show 2 ½ hours (with our Gazebo) 3 ½ hours De rig time: 2 hours from end of last show. Full tech Spec and Risk Assesment available on request.
