T he Chamber’s mission to con- nect its members to elected officials and create a better informed and engaged electorate continues as we welcome incumbent Nan Hayworth and challenger Sean Patrick Maloney, the candidates to represent New York State’s 19th dis- trict in Congress, to a forum during the October Contact Breakfast on Wednesday, October 17 from 7:30- 9 a.m. at the Poughkeepsie Grand Hotel and Conference Center. Hayworth is in the midst of her first term in office aſter de- feating John Hall in 2010. She believes in working to rein in fed- eral spending, eliminating unnecessary and counterproductive regulations, reducing the high cost of energy, and repairing our aging infrastructure. While in office, Hayworth signed a letter urging President Obama to permit more offshore energy explo- ration to help reduce fuel prices, and she also voted for the Budget Control Act and Cut, Cap and Balance Act of 2011. Additionally, Hayworth strongly supports veteran’s affairs and making common-sense reforms to sustain Medicare benefits for gen- erations to come. Between 1997 and 2000, Sean Patrick Maloney served as Staff Secretary and Special Assistant to the President in Bill Clinton’s White House where he was part of a team that created millions of jobs and balanced the budget. His job as staff secretary – the youngest ever appointed – was to read everything meant for the president; decide what went through and what didn’t; and to preside over the decision- making process in the West Wing. Last month in this space, Idiscussed how the Cham-ber works with its many

partners in government andthroughout the region to makethe Hudson River Valley a betterplace for business, tourism, andof course, its residents.

Another example of thisis the Chamber’s partnershipwith the Poughkeepsie JournalandThe United Way of theDutchess-Orange Region toincrease volunteerism on Makea Difference Day, coming up onOctober 27.

Make a Difference Daywas started by USAWeekend, owned by Gannett, which alsoowns the Journal. Last yearalone, more than three mil-lion people around the countrypitched in on various projects.

Our goal is to get communi-ty service organizations to postprojects to a special website andthen to have residents choosehow they would like to help onthis special day.

But make no mistake – ourthree organizations collectivelyhave a greater purpose in mind.We want this volunteerism tocarry on beyond October 27.

I know how many of yougive back in so many ways, andthat’s part of the reason this is

one of the great places to havea business and raise a familyin the entire country. Do me afavor? Go to www.makeadiffer-enceday.com and register yourproject or find out more aboutvolunteering. You’ll feel betterbecause of it, and the HudsonRiver Valley will be a betterplace because of you!

“We didn’t even have a key,”he said.

That became a problem sev-eral years later as he and most of

The Poughkeepsie PublicLibrary District is proposingto build a new town branch onBoardman Road in order to ad-dress the growing demand forits services. The current branchlibrary is located in rented spacein an office building directly onthe eastbound arterial.

“The Library District pays$125,000 a year in rent and com-moncharges fora site that, at 6,500square feet, with only one smallmeeting room, is inadequate tosupport the demand formaterials, technology, and programs,” saidDirector Tom Lawrence.

The Library District pro-poses to purchase a six-acresite that is currently owned byFaith Assembly of God. The siteincludes a building, and a park-ing lot that meets the current

Town of Poughkeepsie code. The proposed project involvesthe renovation of 18,000 squarefeet of interior space, and theaddition of 4,200 square feet ofnew space. The new library willinclude three meeting rooms, including one dedicated to chil-dren’s programs, to address thepublic library’s expanding roleas a community center offeringprograms for all ages.

The total cost of the project is$6,550,000. The site is already offthe tax rolls and therefore has noimpact on the Town’s budget. Theannual tax impact for an owner ofa home valued at $225,000 wouldbe $21.50 in the City of Pough-keepsie and $11.93 in the Town.

Poughkeepsie residents willhave an opportunity to vote onthe project on November 6.
