The structure is in fair condition. It has not been used for some time.

Ungradable, not significant.

The opportunity exists to reinstate the function of the boiler house, using green technology, which would allow for lilies to be grown in the garden’s ponds once again.

Alterations to this structure should not require a heritage permit, provided they conform to the campus heritage guidelines.Surrounding trees of stature should be retained.

This structure is a service building within the gardens, and in not very visible. It has limited significance, particuarly as it is no loner functional.

Small, single storey structure located to the west of the lily ponds, that was constructed in order to heat the water in the ponds to a temperature condusive to growing tropical plants. The structure has not been used for some time.

The building is in fair condition. The exceptional auditorium space is currently disused.

Grade II/PHS

The auditorium is currently disused, and the ground floor rooms are used for offices. A more public use should be found for the structure.

The building should retain its Grade II/PHS status.Trees of stature on site should be retained. A maintenance plan should be devised to preserve the remaining historic fabric. Opportunities for restoration of the building and garden should be explored. Any alterations to this structure should conform to the campus heritage guidelines.Fransen, H. The Old Buildings of the Cape. Jonathan Ball: Cape Town, 2004.

This structure is South Africa’s first higher school of music. It has architectural significance related to its age, classical design, fine materiality and craftsmanship. On an urban level the building follows the pattern of university institutions in its form, height, materiality and landscape setting/positioning. It is also a landmark building within the town.

Two storey structure with balustraded mansard roof and pediment. Balcony portico with pilasters and decorative balustrade. Paired arched windows with moulding. Timber floors and windows. Interior timber four panel doors. Pressed and matchboard ceilings. Black and white tiled entrance hall. Notably fine auditorium. Undergone additions and alterations towards the rear, with contrasting glazed panels, but this extension is rather clumsy in comparison to the fine detailing of the main building.

The building is in fair condition.

Grade IIIA.

Introduction of inappropriate materials and/or significant change of materials in maintenance and upgrading. Universal access, security etc. to be properly incorporated. Junction with Neelsie to be properly resolved. The building should be formally listed as Grade IIIA.Trees of stature on site should be retained. A maintenance plan should be devised to preserve the remaining historic fabric. Opportunities for restoration of the building and garden should be explored. Any alterations to this structure should conform to the campus heritage guidelines.

The building does not conform to the university typology, but occupies an important position within the Botanical Garden and sets up the east-west axis across the garden, along which several memorials and statues (Grade I) are located. It is a good example of the Cape Dutch Revival style, exhibiting fine design elements, craftsmanship and materials.

Single storey Cape Dutch Revival style building with tiled roof. Plastered and painted brick walls. Half-shuttered Cape Rev. casement windows, pedimented front door with fanlight. Terracotta tiled entrance lobby, tall interior space. Tiled internal window cills, timber picture rails throughout. 2 panel internal timber doors with plinth blocks to architraves. The previous recording space has been altered to serve as the tea room, with a new deck to the south of the structure. New kitchen installed within.

Single storey, rectangular structure with pitched, tiled roof and wide eaves. The structure has steel windows and wide tiled cills, as well as sliding timber doors.
