The marina is filling up and hopefully all the boats are sporting their 2019 Vessel Safety Check sticker. Thank you to Power Fleet Captain, Mike Holland, and U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary members Bonnie Breneman, Flotilla 25-06, Scott Williamson, Flotilla 25-08, and the other members of USCG Flotilla 25-08 for doing the inspections and helping instruct our MVYC boaters on how to boat safely this season. The month of May is here and I hope it brings you all that sense of relief that comes with knowing “I have paid all my yacht club dues and fees” Final installment payments were due April 30. For those of you with that nagging sense of regret because you forgot to send the check, please contact me to avoid the membership chair chasing you down. As we approach the warm summer season, this is a perfect time to “get the word out” to our friends and neighbors about our club. Invite them to join you for any of our upcoming events, a tour of the club, or an afternoon on the point. We have plenty of room for new members.I have received and posted a few more applications on the bulletin board and invite you to check them out and let me knows if you have any comments you’d like to share.Richard and Alice Sofield (endorsed by Erik and Julie Thomas and Sandra Drury) Andrew Steenbuck and Jamie Cox (endorsed by Chris Johnson and Tom Connolly)I would also like to introduce you to our newest members, Kevin and Astrid Haugh, and although they are new to the club, they have been long time friends to many having participated in raft-ups and activities over the years. We are glad they finally made the plunge to dive in as full members. Welcome Kevin and Astrid!

do” spirit alive and keep our grounds, house, and marina clean and maintained throughout the year. For those who have their four-legged family members join them, please remember a few simple courtesies: be respectful and keep your dogs leashed; be observant and pick up after your pets – poop patrol is the owner’s responsibility; and be aware to ensure your dog stays on the grass so they can peacefully coexist with cars driving through the parking lot. Think we are all work and no play? Nothing is farther from the truth. Rebecca Mebane Williamson and her social committee kept us entertained as we endured the winter and I know they have a summer full of fun events lined up for the summer. May is already looking pretty busy. From Cinco de Mayo to Commissioning Day to the Memorial Day pool opening, there is a lot happening this month. For the club Ladies, get your china and hats ready for our annual Mother’s Day Tea. Thank you to Pam and Bair Beggan for continuing this very special tradition to celebrate the unique bond between Moms, Grandmothers, Godmothers, and Aunts, and the little ladies they love. Check out our calendar and start filling in yours. One final reminder, please make an effort to attend the May 2 membership meeting. This will be our last until September, as we traditionally suspend the monthly meetings for June, July, and August. Board meetings, however, will continue on the third Monday of each month. If you want to stay up to date on our projects or ask any questions, the May 2 membership meeting will be your best opportunity. Thanks for all you do for this club. Take time to enjoy the fruits of your labor and spend time enjoying family and friends.

Boating season has finally arrived! I would like to offer sincere thanks to Jerry Gray for his many years of service as manager of Gas Dock Operations. Under Jerry’s leadership the gas dock has become a smooth and efficient part of our MVYC experience that the power boating portion of our club has come to rely on.I would also like to welcome Frank Quigley and thank him for stepping up to fill Jerry’s shoes. Please give Frank your support. John Binette has also volunteered to assist Frank. As a reminder the complete volunteer schedule is posted on the web site and the weekly email con-tains the next scheduled volunteer. Operating hours are Saturday & Sunday from 10:00 to 12:00. Boaters please arrive at the dock with lines ready, have cash or a check, be ready to depart as soon as you are done, and please don’t arrive at the last minute. If you think that you would like to be a volunteer, or have questions about the operation, please con-tact Frank at [email protected]

Pairing food and wine can add a new flavor to your tried and true recipes. The 2019 Wine Fleet Captains’ Cup competitors demonstrated how to do just that with these two pairings. They agreed to share their unique and delicious recipes exclusively with the MVYC membership. The first winning food and wine pairing is beef ten-derloin with béarnaise sauce paired with Zinfandel from Linda and Rob “Suds” Sudhoff. This is not your every-day meal.

Beef tenderloin (filet mignon) seasoned with salt, pepper, and coated with butter and sautéd crushed garlic cloves (discarded). The tenderloin was grilled over indirect heat in a charcoal grill using bourbon barrel oak chips for a smoky aroma. The tenderloin was then sliced, and a béarnaise sauce applied with minced fresh tar-ragon. The wine paired with the tenderloin was a 2016 Cline (Ancient Vines) Zinfandel about $12 a bottle.Trish and Terry Enright tickled our taste buds with everyone’s favorite Mac and Cheese which they paired with an old stand-by, Aldi’s version of Riunite® Lambrusco, less than $5 a bottle. This dish is a perfect example of bumping up your everyday recipe with a few surprise ingredients and pairing it with an easy to drink wine. En-joy!Gourmet Mac and Cheese with Bacon and Jalapeño • 1 lb bacon, cut into small pieces • 1 lb elbow macaroni (3 cups) • 4 tablespoons butter • 1/2 cup finely minced onion • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour • 3 1/2 cups whole milk • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard • Pinch cayenne pepper • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper • 8 ounces shredded Monterrey Jack or Sharp Cheddar cheese (2 cups) • 4 oz shredded Gruyere • 2-3 jalapeño peppers, remove stem and seeds, chopped • 1 cup breadcrumbs or pankoPreheat the oven to 375 F. Cook the bacon over medium heat until browned and crisp. Remove with a slotted spoon to a plate lined with paper towels to drain. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta and cook al dente. Drain in a colander. In a large saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring often, for 5 minutes, or until softened. Stir in the flour and cook, stirring for 1 minute. Slowly pour in the milk and whisk until mixture is smooth. Cook over medium heat, whisking often until mixture thickens and bubbles, about 6 minutes. Stir in the mustard and cayenne pepper. Mix the cheeses. Stir in ¾ of the cheese until melted and smooth. Season with salt and pepper. Add the pasta, bacon, and jalapeño peppers to the cheese sauce and toss to coat. Scrape the mixture into casserole. Combine the remaining cheese and bread-crumbs. Sprinkle over the top of the macaroni and cheese. Bake until the top is golden brown, about 30 min-utes. Serve hot.

MVYC Dolphin NewsAs a kid I swam for the Hill City Dolphins and swim team was the best part of summer. While making plans for the season I hope it is some sort of karmicpayback for all the work the hordes of parents put into making the summers of my youth fun.

For those who have not swam with us in the past, I hope you will consider joining the Dolphins. As a general guideline I recommend swimmers to have completed kindergarten, they seem to stick with the team once they have completed this milestone particularly if they are the first born of the family. Not only is swimming a great sport, but hanging out by the pool is the best spot to be when it’s warm.

First we need to properly start the season with our kick-off banquet. It will be Saturday, May 18, 2019 at 5:30pm at our clubhouse. Come talk to our coaches and other parents. Sports Fair will be there with our team suit for sale and goggles to outfit your swimmer. Bring a dish to share and get more details about our team.

If you can’t make the banquet our first practice of the season will be on May 28th. Any swimmers 8 years old and younger will practice at 4:30pm and all swimmer 9 years and older will practice at 5:30pm. We try to pair our new swimmers with one of our older dolphin swimmers to make sure everyone is safe and has fun.

The Dolphins will also be helping to start the pool season with concessions and fun on Sunday, May 26 from 11:00am-3:00pm poolside. Come join the fun!

I’d like to thank USCGA Flotilla 25-08 and Bonnie Breneman for all their hardwork during our annual Coast Guard Inspection day, Saturday 27th. 20 boats inspected during the four hour inspection period.

The following day the Power Fleet invaded the Old Dominion Boat Club for brunch! This year we managed to get five boats up river. Our MVYC invasion forces were 56 mem-bers strong (and hungry)! The day was beautiful and the food was delicious. Special thanks to Bruce, Adam, Keith and Isabelle for allowing and helping us use their first class club house! ODBC really did a fine job making all of us feel welcome. Isabelle the club manager, Ronald the bartender and all the other staff worked their tails off to make this brunch the success that it was.

The Memorial Day Raft up will be on May 25th in Pohick Bay. As usual there will be an anchor boat coordinating all arrivals. ALL are welcome to join us for this first major raft-up of 2019! Please see upcoming emails for more information.

MVYC Summer Cruise will be heading to Coles Point Marina Friday August 16th – 18th. This year Coles Point has started using https://www.snagaslip.com/ for boat slip reservations. Please Phone: (804) 472-4011 or Email: [email protected] for RV and house reservations. Get you reservation now! We will send out more information as August draws near.

Can I just say “Wow!” The turnout for both of our Spring Clean Up Days in April were outstanding. We accomplished so much by the mere fact that so many folks showed up eager to do anything and everything. (The beautiful weather was also a plus.) Even more impressive than everyone’s yardwork abilities were their attitudes. Your productivity and camaraderie made me equally humble and grateful.I’d like to recognize and especially thank two MVPs on our Championship Grounds Team - Roger Bowers and Judy McCarthy. They each put in countless hours and have truly been the visionaries as well as the subject matter experts. Their talent is second only to their selfless, hard work. When you see them, please let them know how much we appreciate all that they’ve done for our Club.

Going forward, please help us water our new gardens in the front yard these next few months. (While our sprinkler system is out of commission, it is actually better to hand-water through this first summer season.) I am seeking volunteers to plan ahead and sign up for our “watering watchbill”. Help us share this “labor of love” and take care of our Club’s new and improved “welcome mat” (about 25 minutes is all it takes). Please let me know if you’re willing to help manage, organize or track this, please let me know. So now, it’s time to enjoy the fruits of our labor. As you do, if you see something that needs addressing, please let me know. Thanks again for everyone’s earnest and generous help! As always, it’s our shared sense of pride and ownership that makes our Club great.

Security NewsAs we begin to enter the boating and pool season, the safety and security of the club begins to ramp up too. Recently, we’ve noticed unlocked doors, beer lockers, TVs that were left on, shades left up, and lights left on. Please always remember to keep the club exactly as you found it. Securing our club is not only our responsibility, but helps maintain the integrity of the clubhouse and we ask that everyone be diligent. Also remember that the master devices issued to members are for use of Head of Household and/or spouse only—all other household members should have separate, limited access devices for use at the pool and marina. If you need devices programmed for limited access, please let me know.

Thanks for helping to keep our facility secure.Bonnie Breneman, PC, Security [email protected]

For those of you who are unfamiliar, the Potomac River Yacht Club association is comprised of 23 yacht clubs located along the Potomac River from as far north as the Anacostia River and south to where the Potomac merges with the Chesapeake Bay. MVYC is a participating club. At its simplest, the association encourages and promotes yachting, boating safety and education, and comradery on the water and upon shore within the Potomac River Basin. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to realize this includes many cruises, parties and other get togethers during the course of the year. Perhaps the two most exciting events are the Summer Kick Off at Cobb Island in June and the Float-In at Coles Point (this year) in July. While specifics on each event have yet to be published, you can be sure event planners will do their best to provide an enjoyable coterie of activities to outdo previous years and provide a wonderful time for all. It’s not unusual to encourage costume apparel to match the theme of the event, hold dances, have highly competitive skill-oriented games pitting clubs against each other as they compete for a special prize, participate in educational or craft opportunities, and consume a lot of food. Last year’s Cobb Island theme was “Cobb Island Rocks” which included a Dabba-Dabba-Do Olympics with games patterned after the Flintstones Fred, Wilma, Barney and Betty characters. It was a great time! Different, but just as much fun was the July Float-In at Coles Point with its theme “Rock the River” (Rock meaning a band and not throwing stones at each other Flintstone style). Much of Saturday was occupied with club participants pursuing first place in the various competition games. It was said that my particular action in the on land blind dinghy race was one for the ages and won’t soon be forgotten by those who attended. Suffice it to say planners for both events are right now doing their best to outdo each other and past events, but alas, I don’t have anything to share with you readers at this time other than dates. June 9-11 for the Cobb Island Summer Kick Off, and July 19-21 for the Float-In to Coles Point. Go ahead and put those dates on your summer boating calendars. As specifics (themes, activities, costs, etc.) regarding each weekend becomes available we will be sharing them with MVYC families. Until then, keep dreaming about what a great boating season lies ahead! It’s coming soon.

The Mount Vernon Yacht Club Commodore extends a warm invitation to our annual

Commissioning Day and Blessing of the Fleets.

Sunday, 5 May 2019 at 2:00 PM The Mount Vernon Yacht Club celebrates its annual “Commissioning Day” and “Blessing of the Fleets” ceremony every spring. Passed down through generations of sailors and navies around the world, the centuries-old ceremony is intended to safeguard crews and ships from the danger of the seas through a traditional blessing given by a clergyman at the water’s edge. Our ceremony is brief and highlighted by a performance of the United States Coast Guard Ceremonial Honor Guard Silent Drill Team. As active members of the Mount Vernon Yacht Club, members of the community and stewards of the Potomac River, it is my hope that you will join us in ushering in another wonderful boating season while enjoying lunch and refreshments and the sweeping views of the mighty Potomac River. If you plan to attend, please RSVP to [email protected]. While lunch is being provided at no charge, we need to get an accurate count for our champagne toast as well as other beverages and food.

Your Commissioning Day “To Do” List

• Join the Celebration! – RSVP if You Haven’t Yet• Decorate Your Boat or a Section of Fence• Volunteer to Help• Arrive Early• Walk or Carpool, if Possible, and Park Safely• Enjoy the Afternoon with Friends and Refreshments by the River

Our annual Commissioning Day and Blessing of the Fleets is almost here. We’re looking for a great turnout and hoping (keep those fingers crossed) for a bright, sunny, and warm day on Sunday, May 5th. Actually, after last summer, fall, and winter, we’ll even welcome and be grateful for a Commissioning Day forecast without afternoon rain. RSVP if you haven’t already at [email protected]. While lunch is being provided at no charge, we need to get an accurate count for our champagne toast as well as other beverages and food. As usual, we have a fun celebration planned to usher in the boating season, beginning with the ceremony -- starting promptly at 2:00 PM – followed by an afternoon of lunch and refreshments and time spent with friends from MVYC and the larger community alongside the beautiful Potomac River. We’ve added a moon bounce to entertain the kids and expanded the decorating contest (with prizes!!) this year for everyone to participate in (see article on the contest in the April Beacon), regardless of whether or not you are a boater. (Moon bounce and any mess-producing decorating cancelled in the event of rain.) It will be fun to see what everyone dreams up to decorate the pool and parking area fenc-es and the boats this year!

Thanks to the many MVYC members who have already volunteered to help with this ma-jor event. Additional volunteers will be needed for set-up and cleanup activities. Mark these set-up times now on your calendars if you can help:

Saturday, May 4 at 5 PM (putting up tents, chairs, tables, etc.)Sunday, May 5 at 9 AM (day of event needs)

Additional help is still needed during the event itself, so if you are willing and available to help, please contact Kathy Ichter ASAP at [email protected] or 703-354-3728.

Notes on parking: Arrive early to allow extra time to find parking. As usual parking on site will be quite limited, leaving very few spaces for attendees beyond our invited spe-cial guests and VIPs, those with vehicles with disabled parking placards or license plates, and the buses carrying the Coast Guard’s Color Guard and Silent Drill Team. If you are able to walk to the event or carpool, please do. If you must drive, please remember to be respectful and mindful of everyone’s safety in choosing where to park on Yacht Haven’s nearby neighborhood streets, not blocking traffic or driving on grassed shoulder areas.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there!

Kathy Ichter, 2019 Commissioning Day Chair
