Dear Members,

We would like to welcome you to the Boston University Undergraduate Economics

Association (BU UEA). The economy influences everybody, and we believe that in order

for people to make better decisions, both for themselves and others, they have to be well-

informed on the underlying economic conditions. The Boston University Undergraduate

Economics Association offers all students at Boston University a platform for gaining

insight into today’s worldwide economic issues. From a purely intellectual standpoint, we

are fortunate to witness policy makers confront novel economic challenges that are

currently plaguing the world economy. With a fragile U.S. economy, a European crisis,

and a slowing Chinese economy, the next several months promise to be exciting.

With this said, we thank you for your interest and are looking forward to working with

you.

Sincerely,

Website

BU UEA Website

The BU UEA website represents the

club’s main set of activities. The

website functions as a vehicle for

students to debate and post about

economic issues and topics, not only

through writing articles, but also by

commenting on articles written by

other students. The website provides a

constructive platform for columnists

and writers to showcase their

economic and writing talent. Student

authors will be given free rein to write

on any topic related to economics and

are even encouraged to incorporate

their other interests, such as politics,

philosophy, and psychology. Writing articles will serve

as an opportunity for students to build on their creative

abilities in writing and economic analysis, practicing the

same set of skills they have gained from their academic

background and classrooms. It will also provide

exposure to different ideas and critiques from a diverse pool of students. All articles will

be regulated and, if necessary, edited by the Vice President of Editorial Content.

All articles are automatically entered in the BU UEA Article Competition, which takes

place twice every semester. The first winner will be announced at the middle of the

semester and the second winner will be announced before the last day of classes. A

student writer may win the competition more than once each semester, but the same

articles will not compete for more than one competition. Winners will receive a

certificate for winning and are guaranteed to be featured in the club’s journal, which is

published online every semester. The winners of this competition will be chosen by a

weighted equation:

0.28 x quantity + 0.14 x quality + 0.58 x traffic

This equation assigns specific weights (which are subject to change) to certain variables:

quantity, quality, and traffic. Quantity represents the numbers of articles that have been

published throughout the competition. Quality takes into consideration how the article

was rated by website visitors, on a scale from 0 to 5 stars. Traffic measures the amount

of readers the article was able to attract. The individual with the highest resulting

numeral will be declared the winner.

To be classified as a student writer, a member must simply write an article and submit his

or her work via e-mail to [email protected]. The BU UEA keeps track of all of its student

writers and will send them specific student writer information, individualized support,

and other opportunities.

The best student writers will be given the privilege to become columnists for the BU

UEA website. Columnists will be provided a designated area within the BU UEA

webpage, which they may name as they wish. Columnists may choose to focus their

writing on a specific subject or on an array of different economic subjects. Columnists

will be expected to write regularly and meet certain criteria. To be eligible for

application, student writers will have to have been active writers for the BU UEA for at

least a semester and have written a certain number of articles for the BU UEA.

At the end of each semester, the best articles will be compiled into the club’s published

journal. The BU UEA Economics Journal will be available on the BU UEA website and

distributed virtually to members, faculty, and alumni.

updated and maintained daily, tracking current economic issues and topics. The

social websites are also utilized to inform members of events and opportunities and

spark discussion through interesting polls. The performance of the BU UEA social

websites is measured using a handful of metrics that take into account different aspects

of member activity. The social websites are maintained by the Vice President of

Operations.

a community interested in Economics. The general meetings will further aid and

support the development and execution of such events.

The BU UEA may collaborate with other organizations to develop events of interest for

its members. This includes speaker events featuring faculty, alumni, and other special

guests on a variety of topics of interest to the club members. Other events the BU UEA

may develop, organize, or participate in include professional workshops, networking

events, competitions, presentations, and discussions on current issues related to

Economics. The goals of the general meetings and events that the BU UEA participates

in are to broaden members’ knowledge of Economics, expand their opportunities, and

engage their interests.

The BU UEA engages in the publishing of articles on its website. The club encourages

open and constructive conversations on any topics that writers choose to discuss. Any

opinions presented in these articles are of the writers only and do not represent the

club’s opinions nor those of Boston University. Boston University has strict rules

against plagiarism and the club will uphold them. Student writers must use references

where necessary and explicitly credit the sources of ideas and material that is not their

own. The BU UEA expects student writers to submit their articles with integrity.

Students should be honest and credit the rightful owner of the content they are

submitting and refrain from plagiarizing from others, including other BU UEA writers.
