With artists hailing from Berlin to Buenos Aires, Jerusalem to Jamaica Plain, Min neapolis to Manhattan, the 2013 BJMF is the perfect way to explore the world of Jewish music. Where else could you experience the glorious sounds of Itzhak Perlman and Israeli cantor Yitzchak Meir Helf got, or the American premiere of France’s Mazal, who transform ancient Sephardic melodies into electronic dance music? Let's add in some new venues as well including Oberon, Club Passim, Jamaica Plain’s Milky Way Lounge and Northeastern University’s Fenway Center.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28 SPECIAL NORTH SHORE PREVIEW7:30 pm Klezmer Buenos Aires with Lerner & Moguilevsky Congregation Ahavas Achim, Newburyport, MABy popular demand, BJMF is proud to present a special festival preview concert for the North Shore Jewish Community featuring Lerner & Moguilevsky, two master musicians and improvisers from Argentina. César Lerner and Marcelo Moguilevsky use klezmer as a springboard for intense, original improvisation. Marcelo Moguilevsky (vocals, clarinet, bass, soprano sax, wooden flutes, harmonica, bagpipe and duduk) and César Lerner (piano, accordion and percussion) seamlessly blend Argentinean folk music, jazz, contemporary music and tango.

The Tarras Project The Tarras Band captures and refreshes the music of legendary clarinetist, Dave Tarras. The band features rising star Michael Winograd on clarinet, Boston’s own Jim Guttman on bass, and 72 year-old pianist Pete Sokolow who played with Dave Tarras for years.

Lerner & Moguilevsky Duo Born of Russian and Polish grandparents who immigrated to Argentina at the turn of the century, César Lerner and Marcel Moguilevsky use klezmer as a springboard for intense, original improvisation. Marcelo Moguilevsky (vocals, clarinet, bass, soprano sax, wooden flutes, harmonica, bagpipe and duduk) and César Lerner (piano, accordion and percussion) combine Argentinean folk music, jazz, contemporary music and tango. This is the Boston debut of this amazing Argentinean duo and festival artists-in-residence.

Shura Lipovsky One of the best known singers of Yiddish/Jewish songs in the world, Shura Lipovsky is a native of the Netherlands. She has been a pioneer in spreading Yiddish folksong in Europe since the 1970’s. In performance, teaching and coaching choirs, she also focuses on multicultural dialogue through the arts. She will perform with the Lerner & Moguilevsky Duo.

Playing together for 27 years, César and Marcelo have developed their own musical language that is virtuosic, creative and passionate. Reviewers call their performances, "ecstatic," "unblushing" and "sassy."

4:00 pm Dan Nichols Unplugged Temple Sinai, Sharon In Honor of Cantor Jeff Klepper’s 10th Anniversary Enjoy a special unplugged concert with Dan Nichols, one of the most dynamic, influential and creative Jewish singer/songwriters in North America. Dan’s melodies are becoming an integral part of the spiritual and liturgical experience in many Jewish communities. He is an infectious and energetic live performer.

Sparks is an award-winning guitarist whose blend of musical styles has won him extensive praise. He has released three highly acclaimed CD’s of Jewishly-inspired music on John Zorn’s Tzaddik record label, culminating in MASADA, with guitar greats Bill Frissell and Marc Ribot.

Noah Lubin An exciting BJMF discovery, singer/songwriter Noah Lubin combines gritty, soulful vocals with heartfelt music shaped by his Jewish beliefs. Noah recently moved to Boston from Israel where he often appeared onstage with Matisyahu.

WEDNESDAY, MARCH 68:30 pm DANIEL KAHN AND THE PAINTED BIRD Milky Way Lounge, Jamaica PlainDaniel Kahn concocts a mixture of Klezmer, radical Yiddish song, political cabaret and punk-folk, bound together by his unique talents as a songwriter, translator and performer. He tells stories of outrageous incidents, poetically dark, tragically humorous and politically incorrect. Described as 'the Yiddish Pogues,' Painted Bird’s music straddles the borders between radical & traditional, lyrical & political, East & West, folk & punk, mama loshon & loshon hora. This is a rare opportunity to experience a great musician who finds inspiration in the poetry and music of Jewish protest.

ThursdAy, MArch 78:30 pm THE ELECTRO JUDEO DANCE PARTY Mazal with Stereo Sinai Johnny D’s, Davis Square, SomervilleMaking their American debut, France’s Mazal combines centuries-old Sephardic songs and chants with today’s electronic sampling and dance beats. What happens when the ancient music of exiles meets the electronic rhythms of today? The dance floor fills up!

Opening for Mazal, Stereo Sinai’s signature sound is "Biblegum pop," a heretical combination of ancient, holy tongues with blasphemous backbeats and synthesized pop melodies. If Gwen Stefani and Will.i.am had been on the mountain with Moses, they would have come down sounding a lot like Stereo Sinai.

SATURDAY, MARCH 98:00 pm MIKA KARNI’S KOL DODI Congregation Mishkan Tefila, Chestnut HillThis concert brings together a unique musical ensemble of Israeli, Moroccan, Yemenite and Ethiopian musicians and singers, led by one of Israel’s all-time favorite female vocalists—Mika Karni. Based on Song of Songs, one of the world’s greatest love songs, Mika composed and re-arranged the original biblical lyrics to convey the story in a modern, intimate and personal way, taking the listener into a deep and emotional experience. The ensemble's sound combines traditional Jewish melodies with African – ethnic rhythms and a taste of folk/singer-songwriter qualities, creating a musical landscape of modern Israel.

3:00 pm THE ISRAEL FOLKDANCE FESTIVAL OF BOSTON Kresge Auditorium, MITEnjoy the 37th anniversary of this wonderful celebration of Jewish culture. Hundreds of dancers will be performing in a show set to Israeli music both old and new, with a rousing finale weaving all the dancers together into a mosaic of color and costume. The beat is contagious, the enthusiasm infectious, and the spirit moving!

A special afternoon of choral and chamber music featuring the Zamir Chorale of Boston, and Kol Arev of Hebrew College, in a concert of the magnificent composi-tions of Lazar Weiner and his Pulitzer Prize-winning son, Yehudi Wyner, and Cantor Hugo Chaim Adler and his son, Samuel, recipient of the Aaron Copland Award for lifetime achievement in music. Both Yehudi Wyner and Samuel Adler will be participating in the program.

SUNDAY, MARCH 107:00 PM NEW HARMONY A concert of two multi-ethnic ensembles Temple Emunah, LexingtonBJMF proudly presents two groups committed to interfaith cooperation, ethnic diversity, and the preservation of Jewish musical traditions.

The Guy Mendilow Ensemble will perform Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom, new interpretations and arrangements of Ladino folk songs. Led by Guy, an Israeli citizen who has also lived in South Africa, the group features Irish, Japanese, Israeli, and Palestinian musicians whose very diversity adds great richness to the music and the concert-going experience.

The Epichorus, featuring Zach Freeman, a New York rabbinical student, and Alsara, a Sudanese Muslim singer, is a multi-ethnic band performing Hebrew and African love songs "to create music that transcends the boundaries of culture or religion." Their story and sound is nothing less than magical and has been featured in the Huffington Post and Tablet Magazine.
