In Search of the Bosnian Sun God

“Where are you… enchanting young god?”

The relevance of sun cults and animistic attitudes towards natural objects as prevailing forms of

understanding nature and reality are found across all prehistoric and ancient cultures around the

world. The “Sun” and the “Moon” are, like other physical objects, understood in terms of animate

and conscious beings (or persons). Ancient man felt personal relations towards these heavenly bodies,

worshiped them as gods and made sacrifices to ingratiate them. Sun and moon, trees and rivers,

mountains and stars were worshipped as gods in ancient times to an amount that can hardly be

exaggerated. The sun cults of the ancient Egyptians and Aztecs are typical examples to demonstrate

these phenomena. Australian Aborigines, African Tribes and Native Americans believed that their

ancestors were living on as stars in the heavens. The sun was worshipped as a god in every ancient

culture, but nevertheless its importance varied a lot across ancient world.

“The sun is actually the only reasonable symbol for god. The sun is the father god who gives life to

all appearances, the creator of all living things, the energy source of our world.”

Jung

Although many authors have written a lot about this subject, I do believe that it is necessary to throw

a further and deeper glance on prehistoric artifacts like the Bosnian stone spheres and the sun and

pyramid symbolism present in many ancient monuments found all over the country. I really doubt

that a deep understanding of the basic structures of this ancient world view and sacred symbolism,

which survived many millennia and went unchanged through the rise of different cultures that once

existed on the Bosnian territory, has been sufficiently researched and understood among scholars and

the academic establishment.

While Bosnian academics are trying to maintain an obsolete belief system and completely ignore that

Bosnian stone spheres are found in burial sites like those of Costa Rica, Costa Rican archaeologists

have evaluated together with foreign Universities the stone spheres of Costa Rica for UNESCO.

So, how can “they” maintain such inappropriate behavior any longer?

The central argument of this report however, will not be the widespread blindness in the Bosnian

archaeological establishment, but will present some important similarities of attitudes towards the

sun as deity from the prehistoric artifacts (the stone spheres) and mediaeval monuments found in

Bosnia (obelisks, tombstones known as stećaks etc.), and the symbolism and similarities which are

stemming apparently from a common source of modes of thought. This paper wants to develop a

deeper understanding of the available archaeological and historical evidence which account for this

religious/ spiritual phenomena and will try to shed some light on a group of symbols, geometric

shapes, motifs and objects present in the monuments in Bakići classified by The Commission to

Preserve National Monuments as “unusual and impossible to figure out” (see Status of monument

for Bakići at www.aneks8komisija.com.ba).

Despite what we’ve been told, the evidence I’ve found suggests that the prehistoric stone spheres of

Bosnia have had a profound impact on the funerary beliefs and sacred architecture of later religious

cults during mediaeval times and even during the Ottoman Turk period. Just like anywhere else

beliefs, sacred geometric symbols and material objects passed from one particular culture to another.

Bakići: In the Light of the Sun God with no Name

“And so the making of everything and the

creation of the gods should be assigned to

Him. He is the one who produced the gods,

from whom everything has come. He, as the

primeval mound (the pyramid) which rises up

from the limitless waters and imposes order

upon chaos. I was He who came into existence

as a circle, the sun, the sphere.”

The sphere is another image associated with Him as a symbol of beginnings. It is also symbolic of

wholeness and can be seen as a representation of the perfected self. The image of the universal god

reinforces this idea of perfection. He is self-contained, white and pure. He stands within a pavilion or

upon the primeval mound, the pyramid, the Gate of Heaven.

As above, so below; as within, so without; as without, so within. Macrocosmos is the same as

microcosmos, the universe is the same as God, God is the same as man... ad infinitum (spira solaris).

The strands of our DNA, flower petals, diamond crystals, a nautilus shell, the star we spin around,

the galaxy we spiral within, the air we breathe, and all life forms as we know them emerge out of

I have to admit that visiting Bakići, a village in the municipality of Olovo and second destination on

my agenda for the research on Bosnian stone spheres, revealed to be one of the most important and

exciting moments during my stay in Bosnia in August 2009. The area of Bakići is known for its

“mramori” (marbles), as local people like to call the stećaks. Stećaks are massive above ground

monuments made of rock, which are placed above an entire grave in the shape of a slab or coffin.

Many of them are depicted with solar symbols, but I was not able to find any with engraved writings.

Numerous examples can be seen in the upper chapel of the church of St. Rocco. The place where the

church is located, along with a necropolis of stećaks is called “Klisa”, which probably derives from

the Latin word "ecclesia" (congregation). In some documents it is named St. Rocco's church and in

the vicinity is a well which the people call “Rokova voda” (Rocco's water). Based on the type of

construction and the necropolis of stećaks near it, experts date back the church to the 15th century.

Photos: The remnants of the church of St. Rocco and its massive stone altar, D. Bakići, Bosnia and Herzegovina

Professor friar Krunoslav Mišilo, who was authorized by the Museum authorities in Sarajevo,

completed archeological research at the church in 1968 and in 1969. The church of St. Rocco is a

square and, like the stećaks, it is oriented to the cardinal directions (N-S E-W). On the facade of the

western side is the main entrance into the church. On the opposite side of the entrance, on the eastern

side is the apse. Inside the structure was found a massive stone altar composed of two massive stone

blocks.

It was a great surprise for me finding so much substantial evidence about solar symbolism on

historical monuments in just one place which can be linked to the stone spheres and pyramids in

Visoko. The most recurring solar symbols found on the monuments in Bakići are: the sun (sphere -

He), the pyramid (the primeval mound – The Gate) and spira solaris (single and double – The Soul).

These symbols also provided to me new clues on the typical architectural design of Bosnian stećaks

characterized by an ending with a pointed top () which, in my opinion, cannot be considered just a

mere coincidence, or as a product of the creative imagination of a stonemason, or associated with

superficiality with a “house-shaped” stylized coffin lid. As in case of Egyptian obelisks, the stećaks

(lit. standing tombstones) are monolithic stone monuments. They can be generally divided in two

sections, a quadrangular or rectangular base (the trunk) placed upright and an ending with a pointed

top (the capstone i.e. pyramidion-“benbenet”). The pointed top, like in Egyptian obelisks, represents

the primeval mound, the pyramid, a passage towards Heaven. I know this may sound banal, but at

the same time it is actually incredibly profound, because I think it is essential to understand the

animistic religious context behind the architectural design of a stećak with a pointed top. However,

the new evidence strongly supports this theory. Such kind of sacred symbolism can be found almost

everywhere in Bakići and in Bosnia and has been reproduced countless on many historical

monuments. Until now close to 70,000 stećaks have been recorded on the territory of Bosnia and

Herzegovina, but today the exact number is still unknown. Stećaks are formally associated with the

medieval period, yet they are very unusual and mysterious and their origin has not been sufficiently

explained (e.g. it seems written records relating to quarries and stonemason shops do not exist).

Photos: Stećak (front and rear view) ending with a pointed top and depicted with solar symbolism, D. Bakići

The symbols depicted are: 1 stem (1), 1 rosette with seven petals (2) and 2 single spira solaris (3,4).

Explanation: Contrary to the opinions of some experts who interpret the symbolism depicted on this

stećak as “impossible to figure out” or mere decorative art, these symbols have a precise religious

and mystical meaning and are complementary to each other. Most animistic belief systems hold that

the spirit survives physical death and, in this case, the symbolism refers to the tendency to attribute

lifelike qualities (the survival) to the souls of those who died. In ancient cultures the stem/stalk (1)

has been often associated with the umbilical cord and thus called “The flower stalk of life”. From the

dawn of legend it has been surrounded by an aura of magic and the supernatural and was worn as a

talisman to protect its bearer from various sickness and misfortunes (Spivak 1946).

Description: The example of stećak shown in the photo above should confirm the hypothesis being

previously advanced. It is the essential and primitive representation of the sacred mound (the

primeval mound, the pyramid or “benbenet”).

Although people often refer to stećaks as to “coffins” (from the Bosnian language sanduk), because

of their visual similarity to coffins/sarcophagi, this was not their practical nor symbolical function. A

similar dilemma has been confronted by scholars and archaeologists in the case of Egyptian

pyramids. Although most people still believe that pyramids were built as burial chambers for the

dead, no mummies have been found inside the pyramids. As Egyptian pyramids are not tombs,

Bosnian stećaks are not coffins. Of all popular names formulated by people to describe a Bosnian

tombstone, probably nothing comes closer to its essence than the name “eternal home” (in Bosnian

“vječni dom”). The symbolic purpose of a stećak however, can be explained by the following

example.

Making visible the invisible

Photo A: Stone block depicted with solar symbolism Photo B: Vertical energy fields above the Sun pyramid

With reference to the cosmic phenomena explained before, in April 2007, another undisputable piece

of evidence proved the existence of colossal pyramids in Visoko. It came from British scientist Dr.

Harry Oldfield. For the first time in the history of science, a pyramid complex has been surveyed and

measured using Electro-Scanning (EMS), a method that follows sonic, radio, and light frequencies

which emanate from subjects of analysis, in other words, it measures energy fields inside and above

pyramids and displays them three-dimensionally.

Dr. Oldfield analyzed the Bosnian pyramids with several cameras and the results proved to be very

surprising and unexpected. A number of anomalies were registered, the existence of which could not

be attributed to naturally-occurring phenomena. If one records ordinary hills with this equipment,

there are no high-energy fields nor the genesis of additional energy. Above such natural hills, one

finds horizontal, fixed, and homogenous energy fields.

Dr. Oldfield examined the north face of the Pyramid of the Sun from a distance of one kilometer.

The results of this analysis were astonishing. Inside the pyramid, below and above the pine forest on

the north face, there is a steady genesis of energy, which is in direct contrast to naturally occurring

hills. In the past several decades, it has been proven that precisely stone pyramids do indeed generate

specific types of energy. Furthermore, a video footage (available at piramidasunca.ba) clearly shows

that the newly-generated energy accumulates, and is discharged through the tip of the Pyramid of the

Sun. Additional proof of the pyramids’ existence came from the area above the pyramid. Namely, the

energy fields are vertical (Photo B), as opposed to horizontal, which is the case with naturally

occurring hills.

In contrast to natural phenomena where the energy fields are fixed, these electromagnetic fields are

pulsating and non-homogenous. In other words, the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun is in fact acting like

a giant energy accumulator which continually emits large quantities of energy. It is the proverbial

perpetuum mobile (literally meaning perpetual motion), known to the ancient man as spira solaris

(Photo A), which got its start in the distant past and continues its activity without respite. In fact,

throughout modern physics, chemistry, and biology, the sacred geometric patterns of creation are

today being rediscovered.

“And there it stands and waits, in the shadows of forgetfulness, the return of the young god.”

Photo: The obelisk of Bakići, detail

Following the important discoveries related to stone spheres I’ve made in the area of Zavidovići,

another monument located in Bakići suggests a close relationship between the stone spheres and the

pyramids in Visoko. The obelisk, higher than four meters (13.45 feet), is a stand-alone monument in

the Vlaškovac forest. It has a quadrangular base, a trunk and, differently than Egyptian obelisks that

are characterized by an ending with a pointed top (pyramidion), it holds on the top a flat-topped

pyramid and stone sphere (ø 45 cm = 17.7 inches). Another important feature of the obelisk is, like in

the case of the church of St. Rocco and stećaks, its alignment with the four cardinal directions (N-S

and E-W). Moreover, after careful measurements the southern side of the obelisk resulted pointing

the Bosnian valley of the pyramids lying about 50 Km southward. Even if the obelisk has been

officially classified belonging to the mediaeval period, today its exact age is not known and most

symbols depicted on it are far older in origin. A legend narrates that the obelisk has been erected in

the place where King Tvrtko of Bosnia has been injured during a hunting trip. As with Egyptian

obelisks, this monument probably have had an atavistic relationship with a so far unknown sun cult.

Like other obelisks it has been engraved on all four sides. Among various sacred symbols depicted

on the obelisk we find different types of ‘The Flower of Life’ with eight or eleven petals, multiple

Page 15: Bosnian Stone Spheres Revisited_part_2

15 ‘Elle fath kadimoh tah!

double spira solaris, multiple clusters of grape, the representation of a mythical creature (a boar’s

head with a snake’s body), a sword hilt and a shield etc.

The uniqueness of the obelisk is characterized by a flat-topped pyramid and stone sphere placed at

the top (Photo above). All sides and angles of the pyramid are decorated with a twisted cord, a

feature I previously noticed on stećaks, that is connected in four points to the stone sphere. Usually,

in absence of legible and understandable texts, archaeologists have the tendency to dismiss such

symbolism as mere decorative art. Obviously, this is a superficial approach which disallows them a

deeper understanding of the sacred symbolism and historical monument. Nevertheless, the ancients

knew that these patterns were symbolic codes of our own inner realm and that the experience of

sacred geometry was essential to the education of the soul. As mentioned in the introduction of this

chapter, the trunk of the obelisk, today slightly displaced from its original position, is aligned with

the four cardinal directions (N-S and E-W).

The obelisk is in Bakići, together with the

obelisk taken from Heliopolis in Egypt, and

used as gnomon of the Solarium Augusti set

up in Rome by Augustus, now located in the

Piazza di Montecitorio in front of the Italian

parliament, are rare examples of obelisks with

spheres placed at the top.

The obelisk in Rome holds a metal sphere

with a hole. At Solar Noon, the sun shines

through the sphere's hole and projects a beam

of light onto the north/south date line on the

ground to the north of the obelisk (Photo right).

Of course, the sphere on the obelisk in Bakići

has another function and symbolical meaning.

Some of the other symbols depicted on the obelisk:

Photo: A sword hilt, detail Photo: Rosette with 11 petals

As an alchemical symbol the sword is a symbol of purification. Here we experience the metaphorical

sword cleanly piercing the spiritual soul of man. This symbolic action sacrifices physical bondage to

release a path to ethereal freedom. The sword, in certain tribes of Central Africa, was deeply

symbolic of transition. Specifically, we see the quillon (cross guard on the hilt) of swords were

designed so that one side turns heavenward, the other side turns earthwards. This is said to be

symbolic of the powerful connection between sky and earth, and further solidifying the symbolism of

life and death. On the other side, the rosette with eleven petals, has been often been associated with

the rebirth. Whatever a rosette may have meant to its maker, its pierced design evokes to modern

eyes the concept of "passage" or "transition" through its central opening even more powerfully than

any flat shape could.

Photo: Clusters of grape and other symbols, detail

In religious texts, the grape is associated with

immortality. In Egypt, descriptions of wine-

making appear on the walls of ancient

Egyptian tombs and it was considered an

important item on the 'menu' for the afterlife.

The Greek god Dionysus was named twice-

born (Dimetor) by the ancients, counting it as

a single and first birth when the plant is set in

the ground and begins to grow, and as a

second birth when it becomes laden with fruit

and ripens its grape-clusters - the god thus

being considered as having been born once

from the earth and again from the vine.

The spiral (twisted cord), a circle which

continuously returns upon itself, yet does not

end, is also a common image of immortality.

Olovo: Mere coincidence or divine truth?

Photo: Stone sphere with Cyrillic inscriptions kept in front of Olovo’s health clinic

Olovo, a small town first mentioned in written documents in 1382 and situated 60 kilometers

northeast from Sarajevo, appears to have been named after the lead mines and for the commerce of

lead. Lead was also found in other mines in Bosnia, but, that in the Olovo region was of a higher

quality known as plumbum dulce (soft lead). In Olovo there are few factories, stores, a health clinic

and the Gospa Olovska Church (Church of Our Lady of Olovo). The church was since the 15th

century a popular pilgrimage destination of Catholics coming from Bosnia and Dalmatia, but also

among Orthodox Catholics from Bulgaria, Serbia and Albania due to alleged cases of miraculous

healing. A stone sphere, which was found on the steep hills surrounding Olovo, is kept today in front

of the main entrance of Olovo’s health clinic. As the votive stone sphere found in Beše by Zavidovići,

once again, the sphere seems intended to consolidate through a combination of fortuitous historical

circumstances its symbolical importance in the history of healing through worship, evoking an air of

mystery and magic.

After having previously discovered a stone sphere in the waters of a mountain river, Alexandru and

his uncle used an excavator to managed to get it out and transport it to mister Petreanu’s villa were it

lays until this very day as a symbol of the project they have started. The information that they have

immediately started to gather about the stone sphere made them come across the amazing discoveries

in Visoko, Bosnia, discoveries that determined them to put more effort into their research in order to

correlate and pinpoint the resemblances between the two areas. They started making expeditions and

thus managed to cover most of the mountain space between the towns of Vama and Frasin.

Among their most decisive findings were other symilar stone spheres and doorways to what looked

like collapsed caves which astonishingly, after a closer look-up, seemed to present smooth walls and

geometrically aligned joinings (Photos below).

An important moment in the project was when they learned about the existence of over a dozen stone

spheres in the front garden of Vama’s cityhall, brought there by locals from all over the region to be

exhibited. One of them was truly spectacular. It had numerous lines carved in stone on the outline of

two separate circles, lines that are very close in number to those of the mayan calendars of cult and

agriculture. As an ultimate boost to their constantly increasing curiosity, an illustrious geologist said

that the bedrock that the stones are made of is not from around this area and that the energetic

signature they carry is unnaturally high. The enclosed photos are a representative example of the

discoveries made by Alexandru and his uncle during the eight expeditions of this project, initiated in

the summer of 2006 and which came to a stop in 2008, only to be resumed in 2009 on a scientifical

level.

Conclusions

Despite we’ve been told by Academia about Bosnian stone spheres, the archaeological and historical

evidence tells us that the prehistoric stone spheres as material object and metaphysical symbol have

had a profound impact on the funerary beliefs and sacred architecture of later cultures during the

mediaeval times and even during the Ottoman Turk period.

For thousands of years, the scientific knowledge of the ancients translated into religious beliefs and

sacred symbolism transformed into material objects have been passed down from one particular

culture to another.

The obelisk in Bakići is depicted with symbols which are far older in origin than the obelisk itself,

whilst the most powerful symbol of all is represented by the ‘Sphere’, by ‘He’ who came into

existence as a circle, the sun, from whom everything has come.

How it comes that ‘He’ had remained in obscurity for so long?

It seems obvious that we rely too much on Academia to tell us the truth, when ‘they’ are not really

interested in the ‘truth’. Fortunately, not all Academia behave same way, e.g. Costa Rican

archaeologists have evaluated together with foreign Universities their stone spheres for UNESCO.

Unlike BiH’s clique of archaeologists who reacted with cynicism to the project of the Bosnian

pyramids, unlike those who classified in a superficial and amateurish way a group of symbols,

geometric shapes, motifs and objects present in the monuments in Bakići as “unusual and impossible

to figure out”, unlike those who described the earliest zoomorphic depiction of a dragon as “stylized

figure of an animal with a trunk”, unlike those who judge and insult others without even knowing

their own history or those who made preconceived claims without setting foot in Visoko, unlike all

those poor souls, a ‘true’ man of science, after extensive field research and separating facts from

hype, accepts the objective evidence.

Today, I gladly comply to the observations previously made by Dr. Aly Barakat who stated that the

main technique that was used for the sculpting of the stone spheres (incl. the giant ones found in

Ozimice) was pecking, grinding and hammering. Therefore, in the light of evidence, I am strongly

convinced that the Bosnian stone spheres deserve the status of national treasure that needs to be

protected. I also agree with Dr. Barakat that the shape of the Bosnian tombstones is not accidental.

He argued that the typical layout of the Bosnian tombstones characterized by an ending with a

pointed top reflects the “benben”, the pyramidal hill, and that this subject deserves further

investigation. Dr. Barakat’s intuition proved correct and today there’s a lot of objective evidence that

support his claims.

Never before in history, an archaeological project involved so many experts coming from different

fields to solving the riddle of what might be the most important archaeological discovery of modern

times. For the first time, a multidisciplinary archaeological project involved revolutionary methods

of investigation such as Electro-Scanning (EMS), a method which made it possible to experience the

scientific knowledge of our ancestors in a tangible way.

I’m pretty sure most opponents of the project have laughed at Dr. Oldfield’s “unusual” instruments

and methods of measuring, but thanks to him, it was possible to observe for the first time ever the

vertical energy fields/vortexes above and around the pyramids, the perpetual motion of the universe

known to ancient humans as spira solaris, the ‘Dragon’, depicted on numerous monuments in Bosnia.

Page 28: Bosnian Stone Spheres Revisited_part_2

28 ‘Elle fath kadimoh tah!

Every time people scornfully laugh about this subject, they should keep in mind that the ‘Dragon’

has been considered sacred by the ancient cultures that once inhabited the land and, it is well to

remember, that the “laugh” is always on both sides!

Fortunately, since the time of magician Merlin who evoked the dragon by uttering magical words,

for some time now, modern science has gone very far and Quantum Science is going beyond the

probe of atoms, photons, neutrons, quirks and exploring a newer string theory (dancing,

unobservable, vibrational waves of energy) and membrane theory (multiple universes, carved up into

slices, living side by side, all conducted by?). Together they give room to explore what is known as

the M-theory which is undertaking to prove the unity of Gravity, Electromagnetism, weak and strong

nuclear forces.

The deeper Quantum physicists explore, the closer they encircle metaphysical philosophy.

Scientists are realizing there are higher realities within infinite dimensions of intelligent vibrational

energy. It seems string theorists have uncovered eleven dimensions to our universe, and some

Quantum Physicists even go so far as to state the dimensions of the universe may be infinite.

Throughout modern physics, chemistry, and biology, the sacred geometric patterns of creation are

today being rediscovered. After all, religion and science, use different routes to reach the same

destination, the consciousness about the existence of an intelligent universe. Even the notorious

English poet and playwright William Shakespeare understood much earlier than the obsolete

Academic materialists that:

"There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy."

So far, I haven’t found the name of Bosnia’s sun god, nor the identities of its celestial hierarchy, so

the search continues...
