In the five years that I have been involved at Bosch, this season’s outbreak of the N1- Flu Virus has been the worst I have seen. With numbers already down early in the week due to some niggles, my drive out to the farm became a nightmare as further news of two more casualties interrupted my morning drive. These things happen and luckily our squad system and our rotation policy kicked in to lighten the damage. Motivation for the day was easy as most of the rugby peripheral had already written our “depleted” team off. So, with a lot to prove to ourselves and those in the circle we took the field with a strong belief in what this squad is capable of. I couldn’t have been more proud of the effort I saw out on the field as our boys went toe to toe with a very physical “Afrikaner” side and won more of the rounds than expected. It was certainly an evenly contested match as the half time score of 13 – 13 suggests. I was obviously happy with the score line at that stage, but more importantly I was impressed with the way the guys stuck to our plan. The contributions from the entire team were massive and it is not fair to single out any players: but again skipper Waddilove played his heart out and made his presence felt in all departments. Riley Louw controlled things well with the boot and managed to find some space and holes throughout the match. Chris Newby was rewarded with a fine try and is becoming a force upfront in his new position. Rory Thompson is fast becoming the find of the season with another focused performance as he managed to land a couple of important kicks. Our line out was the best it has been all season with only two going astray to the five of theirs – so well done to Marc del Reux and the forwards for turning a difficult set-piece around. However, the difference on the day came down to two slip tackles and the one bounce of the oval ball, all in the space of six minutes. Boland will most probably not score three easier tries this season, which makes the result even more difficult to swallow. In the end the Boland boys deserve their win and we wish them well for the rest of their season. While shaking hands with our Boland counterparts at the end of the game, one of their coaches remarked that it wasn’t pretty, to which I replied: “It was quite pretty from where I was standing”. It was a tough morning for Bosch on the farm as size triumphed for the moment, but as always it was a great contest between two rugby loving schools. This week we face a desperate SACS team who will be hell bent on redeeming their season; and who better than against Bosch. We certainly know what it feels like to have your back against the wall so we expect a massive challenge from a team that will be hurting after a big loss to Bishops. The message to our boys is clear: “Focus on us and don’t underestimate SACS!” See you behind the poles. CLINT VAN RENSBURG Head of Rugby 15 May 2014 # 4

In the five years that I have been involved at Bosch, this season’s outbreak of the N1- Flu Virus has been the

worst I have seen. With numbers already down early in the week due to some niggles, my drive out to the farm

became a nightmare as further news of two more casualties interrupted my morning drive. These things

happen and luckily our squad system and our rotation policy kicked in to lighten the damage.

Motivation for the day was easy as most of the rugby peripheral had already

written our “depleted” team off. So, with a lot to prove to ourselves and those in

the circle we took the field with a strong belief in what this squad is capable of. I

couldn’t have been more proud of the effort I saw out on the field as our boys

went toe to toe with a very physical “Afrikaner” side and won more of the rounds

than expected. It was certainly an evenly contested match as the half time score

of 13 – 13 suggests. I was obviously happy with the score line at that stage, but

more importantly I was impressed with the way the guys stuck to our plan.

The contributions from the entire team were massive and it is not fair to single out

any players: but again skipper Waddilove played his heart out and made his

presence felt in all departments. Riley Louw controlled things well with the boot

and managed to find some space and holes throughout the match. Chris Newby

was rewarded with a fine try and is becoming a force upfront in his new position.

Rory Thompson is fast becoming the find of the season with another focused

performance as he managed to land a couple of important kicks.

Our line out was the best it has been all season with only two going astray to the five of theirs – so well done to

Marc del Reux and the forwards for turning a difficult set-piece around. However, the difference on the day

came down to two slip tackles and the one bounce of the oval ball, all in the space of six minutes. Boland will

U19B RBHS 0 BOLAND LANDBOU 53

Rondebosch started with enthusiasm and looked as though they were on a mission to win this game. After five

minutes, Bosch was unsuccessful with a penalty. Boland was a much heavier side, content to play their normal

forward game. Rondebosch were playing a clever game, putting the ball behind the Boland backs and

forwards, making them turn around and forcing their heavy forwards to retreat. After fifteen minutes, Bosch

seemed to have had all their energy drained, as Boland made their way towards the Bosch try line. Late

replacement scrum half, Logan Stone, was providing fly half, Josh Williams, with crisp passes. However, a large

amount of possession for Boland resulted in wave after wave attacks and the Bosch defence cracked wide

open, resulting in three quick converted tries and a penalty, making the half time score 24 -0.

The second half was no different from the first. For Bosch, hooker, Pieter Slabbert, and flanker, Callum Blows,

were doing their bit but the rest of the side seemed to have forgotten the art of tackling heavier opponents

low. Wrong decisions were also a problem for the Bosch side – when penalties came their way, instead of

seeking the touchline and regrouping, they attempted to run at the heavier opposition. All the attacking was

now made by Boland and the final whistle was all Bosch could look forward to. Boland scored four more tries

and a penalty, to make the final score 53 - 0. This was a game that Bosch need to forget in a hurry.

After our hard loss at home to Wynberg the boys were keen to show what they were made of. The first five

minutes were tough with Boland scoring a quick try. The boys did a great job keeping their heads and putting

in an awesome team performance: getting a penalty half way in the first half and pulling it back to 5 – 3 at half

time.

The second half went backwards and forwards with some quick thinking and great team work from both sides.

With five minutes to go we took our chances and Child scored a try. Gabula, taking another great kick, put us

10 - 5 up with two minutes to go. We put a huge effort in with some tight defence and great team work to run

the clock down and take the win.

It was a fantastic team effort and if we play like this for the rest of the season, it will be a great year.

Well done boys.

15A RBHS 19 BOLAND LANDBOU 21

Following a good win mid-week, the boys travelled out to ‘the farm’ brimming with confidence. The warm up

was a bit subdued in cold, rainy conditions, but the start to the game saw the boys switch gears very quickly

and come out firing. As with all our matches so far this season, we started well and piled on the pressure from

the outset – shocking the opposition and gaining quick momentum. This paid off early as Zak Sallie crashed

over for the opening try (unconverted) – running a great line with quick service from the ruck. The confidence

was evident as the pressure remained on Boland Landbou, and it didn’t take long for RBHS to add a second.

This one courtesy of some slick hands and quick feet from Zuhair Dollie and converted by Sam Alexander for a

12 - 0 lead at half time.

The opposition came out firing in the second half, putting our defence under intense pressure, and were

rewarded early in the half with a converted try (12 - 7). The boys didn’t let this set them back, however, as soon

after a bit of loose play from Boland led to a break away by Sam Alexander, then a quick inside pass to

Donald Falconer who dove over under the poles for another converted try (19 - 7). This seemed to fire up the

opposition however, as they started hammering away at our defence, scoring a converted try to bring the

score back to 19 - 14. With time running down, the Boland Landbou side threw everything they had at us, and,

capitalising on space created on the outside, squeezed over in the corner. Agonisingly, the kick from the touch

line went over and they went ahead for the first time in the match (21 -19).

Unfortunately, despite the RBHS boys using the last moves of the match to work themselves into a good position

to win the match they truly deserved, this was how the score would stay. It was a tough defeat to swallow but,

as with our previous games, there were a lot of positives to be taken from the match with combinations starting

to gel and the team starting to look formidable.

U15B RBHS 3 BOLAND LANDBOU 14

The B team boys had an extended break after the Wynberg fixture and were eager to get stuck into a real

match after weeks of working on the skills and drills in practice. The weather at ‘the farm’ definitely got

involved, presenting a cold, wet field to add to the challenge presented by a strong Boland Landbou side.

After soaking up some early pressure, RBHS were first on the board – a good series of drives from a lineout

taking us well into the Boland half, before a penalty in front of the poles gave Michael King the chance to put

us ahead. This only served to spur on the opposition who came out firing from the restart, forcing our boys to

rely on their defence as their biggest weapon. Daniel Ryklief led the charge here, making several massive hits

that definitely made the opposition think twice about their running lines. Despite the defence holding firm, and

some great lineout work, the game was being played entirely in our half and the pressure eventually paid off

for Boland as they went over for a converted try after a few good drives (7 - 3).

The second half followed much the same script as the first. Reagan George was exceptional in the lineouts,

stealing several opposition throws, and the backline started to get the ball through the hands with both wingers

getting an opportunity to stretch their legs. Unfortunately, we failed to convert our chances and as the half

went on we found ourselves stuck in our half of the field yet again. Though we threw everything at the Boland

defence every time we got the ball, we just couldn’t seem to get the forward momentum we needed.

Eventually the space created by us pushing up worked against us, Boland went over in the dying minutes to

wrap up the match (14 - 3). A strong performance from RBHS in all departments: the boys walked away with

heads held high knowing that the score was not a true reflection of their efforts. The season has now kicked off

properly and the boys are looking forward to making amends in the next match.

U15C RBHS 10 BOLAND LANDBOU 7

An impressive performance of some attacking rugby was evident in this game - played on exceptionally well

drained fields at Boland Landbou. Big pressure at the breakdowns, served to keep the more fancied

opponents on the backfoot, resulting in our boys winning breakdown ball and counter attacking from all areas

on the field.

The first try by Khaliel Tayob came from a darting 30m line break, followed by a quick clean ruck which the

backline used to put Tristan Oliver into space, which he utilized to manoeuver his way through the remaining

opposition - text book stuff! (5-0)

One minute before halftime, Boland Landbou scored their only points from a ruck 10 metres from our line. We

held the first “ABC” phase, but went to sleep on defending the inside A channel resulting in an easy 7 pointer

for them (5 - 7).

We started the second half well, with Vuyo catching deep and going on a 50m run with good interplay

amongst the rest of the players. Small errors kept us from capitalizing on good attacking forays. The final try

was another gem with our backs getting swiftly over the gain line resulting in a final pop from James Sutten, in

the tackle to afford James Hepburn Brown to go over in the corner (10 - 7). The game still had 5 or so minutes to

go, but sustained pressure caused them to kick unnecessarily back to us - which our boys relished. The last

move of the day had our lock, Sabelo Hlatshwayo holding up their ball carrier (in the maul) to force the scrum

and end the game. This made a total of 9 wins at the breakdown, which shaped this fine victory for the boys!

The task at hand was always a tough one. With player call ups and several fullbacks turned flank, Rondebosch

under 15 D lined up against a very formidable Boland Landbou side.

Our boys started well, defending the fringes well and making our tackles at the right time. Connor “the hitman”

O ‘ Sullivan most notably getting stuck in to most of the rucks. It was at scrum time that we were found wanting

and inexperience was definitely shown up. After being driven off our ball a few times, our boys seemed to lose

confidence and it showed around the field. Boland Landbou then ran in 3 unanswered tries.

Half time saw our Hooker Robert de Villiers injured a shoulder and scrums became uncontested. This livened our

boys and we started to look like a threat. Thomas “the general” Sands lead by example and gave us good ball

going forward. A breakaway try and an unforgiving bounce resulted in two more tries for Boland.

The last play of the game, saw us break the line and really create some pressure. We were able to able to dot

down in the corner for a sensational try. Martin “the talk” Krop, having somehow lost his boots during a tough

tussle, stepped to take the kick-Unfortunately the kick went wide much to the amusement of all spectators and

coach alike.

The boys showed good heart, but a few basics are needed to be touched on if we are going to bounce back

to winning ways against SACS.

Starting the season on a high note – winning seven out of seven matches - we knew that Boland was going to

be a very difficult encounter. Even after having lost three of our players due to injury and illness we still had a

very good team. As coaches and as a team, however, we were brought down to earth as Boland stormed into

a 24 – 0 lead by half time. After re-grouping during half time the players knew that they had to step up. There

was a better performance in the second half, with the final score at 38 - 7. This was a massive lesson for the

boys and coaches and it is back to the drawing board. It is not how you fall, but it is how you pick yourself up.

U14B: RBHS 7 BOLAND LANDBOU 15

After a disruptive week of training, due to a couple of injuries which saw changes in major positions, we set out

to play a well-drilled Boland Landbou side. We struggled to hold onto possession right from the start which gave

Boland countless opportunities. They scored their first after a good spell of counter attack just five minutes into

the game. The unsuccessful conversion left the score at 5 - 0. Boland didn't drop the tempo and kept

attacking. We managed to hold them off despite them camping in our 22 for the majority of the first half. They

got their second try off a lineout maul. Again the conversion was unsuccessful leaving the score at 10 - 0.

We struck first in the second half with a great individual try by prop, Ra’ees Sallie - he ran from the half way line

breaking numerous tackles. The conversion was successful and Bosch looked to be back in it, trailing 10 - 7. The

second half was more of a battle than the first but Boland sealed the game with a last minute try ending the

game 15 - 7.

U14C RBHS 26 BOLAND LANDBOU 0

We had the early morning kick off of 8.20 and the weather conditions were not ideal as it was cold, wet and

miserable. This however, did not dampen the spirits of the team: the boys were excited and highly motivated

to run out onto the fields. We started off slowly as there were lots of knock on’s and silly mistakes in the first few

minutes, but settled down soon after a run away try by flying winger, Chumani Mayosi, and conversion by

Jeremy. The rest of the first half was contested evenly with the forwards fronting up at ruck time and the backs

defending well, making their one on one tackles. No further points were scored in the first half.

The second half started off with a quick try by yet another Mayosi brother Hlonela, who also scored a run away

try after the backs showed good hands to get it to the wing - followed by another successful conversion by

Jeremy. We were now leading 14 - 0. The second try gave the boys confidence and they started playing with

flair. The forwards bullied them up front and this saw Gareth Probert bulldoze his way over the try line. The boys

managed to keep Boland Landbou out of the Bosch 22m for most of the game. Just before the final whistle

Hlonela Mayosi scored his brace by once again racing away and finding the try line. Bosch not only ran out

their opposition but denied Boland Landbou any points.
