Padre’s Corner NOVEMBER 17, 2019 THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

CALLISTUS I, POPE AND MARTYR

“Saint Callistus is reputed to have been a slave. Once he obtained his liberty, he was ordained a deacon by Pope Zephyrimus and succeeded him in the Chair of Saint Peter. He fought against the Adoption and Modalist heretics. He was crowned with martyrdom in 222 and was buried on the Aurelian Way. From the common of one martyr, 1721, or of pastors, 1748.

Office of Readings Second Reading From a treatise to Fortunatus by Saint Cyprian, bishop and martyr (Cap. 13: CSEL 3, 346-347) In times of peace the testimony of a good conscience wins the crown

The suffering of this present time are not to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed in us. Who would not strive wholeheartedly to attain to such glory, to become a friend of God and straightway rejoice with Christ, receiving heavenly reward after earth’s torment and suffering? Soldiers of this world take pride in returning to their home country in triumph after they have defeated the enemy. How much greater is the glory in returning triumphantly to heaven after conquering the devil. The bold deceiver is laid low, the trophies of victory are restored to the place from which Adam was cast out for his sin. We offer the Lord a most acceptable gift, our incorrupt faith, the unshaken courage of our spirit and the glorious pride of our dedication. We accompany him when he comes to take vengeance on his enemies; sitting at his side at the judgment seat, sharing in Christ’s inheritance, we are on an equal footing with the angels and enjoys the possession of a heavenly kingdom together with the patriarchs, apostles and prophets. What persecution can defeat such thoughts, what torture overwhelm them? The spirit of a strong and stable character strengthened by meditation endures; this unshaken spirit, which is strengthened by a certain and solid faith in the future will be enlivened against all terrors of the devil and threats of this world. During persecution the earth is closed off from us, but heaven lies open; The Antichrist threatens, but Christ protects us; death is brought on, but eternal life follows. What an honor, what happiness to depart joyfully from this world, to go forth in glory from the anguish and pain, in one moment to close the eyes that looked on the world of men and in the next to open them at once to look on God and Christ! The speed of this joyous departure! You are suddenly withdrawn from earth to find yourself in the kingdom of heaven. These are the thoughts you must grasp with your heart and mind and reflect on day and night. If persecution should overtake such a soldier of God, it will not overcome one so virtuously prepared for battle. Even if our summons should come sooner, our faith which was prepared for the witness of martyrdom will not go unrewarded. For we would immediately receive our reward by God’s judgment. In the time of persecution the battle wins the crown, but in peace it is the testimony of a good conscience.” Comments from Father Bill

Any honest perusal of the legal, political, and religious landscape of our modern times would convey the fact that to be a spiritual adherent today is certainly not easy. With so much news to sour our spirits, what gets me to remain as a priest and the good parishioners to continue to come to Mass while practicing their faith ? Never can the deep convictions be invested in persons, places, or things. The ties must go far deeper into God, through prayer and sacrament.

While in Costa Rica in early October, for the parish trip, our rest stops would often be near Catholic Churches. While going into one to pray, a stray dog walked in also. Definitely a scene out of the “ Bells of Saint Mary’s, “ from 1945 when an orphan dog walks into a church following a lonely older man seeking the help of God through prayers. The dog captured my heart, but eventually left to continue with his life back on the streets. My focus then returned to the Lord. My point here, while reflecting on thoughts of past saints in similar cultural battles as we experience today, is that all ultimately rests in our relationship with God. Even if the world and Church are in a mess, we individually still have the connection to Him in the midst of the chaos if we choose to continue that relationship. Earlier centuries have seen far worse than what we see today, yet good faithful people like you persevered. That same spirit of courage is required as we head into 2020, with Archdiocese uncertainty about the future of a number of churches. Father Bill

TODAY THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Malachi 3:19-20a The prophet Malachi warned that the time would come when all the evil people would be punished. He then speaks of the arrival of "the sun of justice, with its healing rays," believed by most to mean Jesus. Second Reading: 2 Thessalonians 3:7-12 Some of the Thessalonians claimed Christ's return was imminent, so they stopped working and asked others for food. Paul describes his willingness to work, so that he would not impose on others. He encourages them to follow his example and earn their own living. Gospel: Luke 21:5-19 Jesus warns of the persecution all Christians will face because of him, and how some will even be put to death. Yet he says they will not be harmed because "by patient endurance you will save your lives." If Jesus' followers are loyal, they will be resurrected and their suffering will end. Monday 1 Mc 1:10-15, 41-43, 54-57, 62-63; Lk 18:35-43 or, for the Memorial of the Dedication, Acts 28:11-16, 30-31; Mt 14:22-33 Tuesday 2 Mc 6:18-31; Lk 19:1-10 Wednesday 2 Mc 7:1, 20-31; Lk 19:11-28 Thursday 1 Mc 2:15-29; Lk 19:41-44 Friday 1 Mc 4:36-37, 52-59; Lk 19:45-48 Saturday 1 Mc 6:1-13; Lk 20:27-40
