BOREMAX Fresh-WaterSystem reduces costs andenables drilling of interval inone-third of expected timeLocation: Kharyaga Field, Russia
OPERATORS CHALLENGE An operator working in
Russias Kharyaga Field wished to improve penetration rate and
reduce non-productive time (NP), caused by overloading o
the solids control equipment and owline plugging. Specic
problems encountered included:
Plugging o bell nipples and owlines oen occurred while
drilling reactive clays in deviated 16-inch upper intervals
at 196 to 393 (60 to120 m)
12 hours required to clean out owlines
Standard potassium chloride (KCl) drilling uid solutionoen used locally was unsuccessul
Issues with inadequate mud inhibition in dispersive red
riassic clays at 2788 to 4265 (850 to 1300 m) resulted in
owline plugging
Excessive cuttings and drilling waste
HALLIBURTONS SOLUTION Halliburton Baroid
recommended BOREMAX non-dispersed, ultra-low
colloidal content reshwater system or the surace 16-inch
and intermediate 12-in. intervals. Te BOREMAX system
includes BORE-HIB DP (dry powder) additive.
Te new uid system demonstrated signicantly lower
dilution and treatment requirements, with aster mixing. CLAY
GRABBER non-ionic polyacrylamide polymer controlled the
colloidal content o the system. Tis unique polymer occulated
out drill solids and maximized wellbore stability by preventing
washout. BORE-HIB DP additive signicantly decreased
owline cuttings plugging, decreased mud dilution volumes,
and controlled MB value as per drill ing uid program target.
ECONOMIC VALUE CREATED Te interval was drilled
in less than a third o the time it takes when using traditional
KCl-Polymer mud. Using the BOREMAX system with BORE-
HIB DP additive enabled the operator to drill the red bed
clays aster and set surace casing with minimum NP due to
owline plugging.

Drilling waste volumes were signicantly reduced and the drilling
waste contained no salt. Mud mixing was simplied and aster
without KCl. Chemical transport costs were greatly reduced and a
much smaller chemical storage area was used. Material handling wasreduced by approximately 50% or rig personnel increasing saety on
the rig and also decreasing packaging waste. Because it is resh-water
based the system had no harmul efects on the environment.
In summary, Overall uid costs per well did not increase.
Te BOREMAX system makes it possible to:
Drill higher ROPs with a water-based uid
Minimize hole washout and reduce near-gauge hole
cementing costs
Reduce drilling waste cuttings by 30-40%
Minimize mud material transport and storage costs
Te graphs show the economic value created through reduced
drilling days and mud volume used, or each hole interval.
