Page 14: Borehole Submersible Pumps - Incledon Pumps/Pentax Borehole SA.pdf · Borehole Submersible Pumps for use in: Residential Industrial ... The vertical speed of the water creates a strong

There are no secrets to a successful submersible pump installation. All that is required is the application of a few basic and easy to understand ground rules and some attention to detail. Lack of knowledge and attempts to cut corners in order to save costs will inevitably lead to expensive corrective measures having to be taken at a later stage.

1. VACUUM BREAKER VALVE ON SURFACE

If a non-return valve is used in pipework on the surface, and the pump is fitted with a similar valve at its discharge, a vacuum can build up between the two valves. This occurs when the lower valve leaks and the top one seals completely. If the static water level is more than 10 metres, the water column inside the pipe separates from the back face of the top valve. When the pump starts, the velocity of the water in the line is speeded up significantly. This high-speed column of water smashes into the back of the sealing mechanism of the top non-return. The resulting shock wave (water hammer) oscillates violently between the submersible’s thrust bearing and the top valve. This shock load can be severe enough to lift a multi-ton rising main up to 200mm off its base.

The vacuum breaker ensures that no vacuum can be created. In its place, a “plug” of air is introduced into the rising main which acts as a compressible “shock absorber” which opens the top valve before the column of water reaches it.

Air release valves must be installed at appropriate points in the surface pipework in order to release this air.

2. SURGE PROTECTION

For the approved surge arrestors to function satisfactorily, the earth lead of each arrestor must be earthed to the motor body. If steel rising mains is used, a copper earth strap must be securely bolted to it. The earth strap is then earthed to the surge arrestors. A driven ground rod is not acceptable as an earthing point.

If a separate earth wire is used, it must be insulated to prevent failure due to corrosion. This wire must always be at least one size larger than the conductors of the submersible power cable.

3. PRESSURE GAUGE

This instrument gives invaluable feed-back on total system head, friction loss in the pipe between the valve and the outlet and the static head between the valve and the outlet. These values are essential for commissioning, cost effective system operation and trouble shooting.

4. UP-THRUSTING

All centrifugal pumps operate best in (approximately) the middle third of their performance curves. If the system head is too low, the pump will deliver a relatively high flow rate. This drastically increases the velocity of the water passing through the pump. The vertical speed of the water creates a strong upward force on the rotating element. This means that both the motor and pump up-thrust bearings are subjected to constant and abnormally high loads. Poor attention to detail when calculating the total head is not the only cause of r.h.s. of the curve operation. Weak boreholes with high static levels and leaking pump non-return valves can create severe up-thrusting conditions.

This situations can be prevented by:

a) Accurate system designb) Fitting a rate of flow control valvec) Using only good quality non-return valves on the pumpd) If there is a large difference between the static and dynamic water levels, a smaller than usual rising main can be used to generate an appropriate amount of friction. This increases total head as a function of flow, which can prevent the pump from operating too far to the right of the curve.

5. LEVEL MEASUREMENT

In order to accurately measure the depth of water in a borehole, a dipper tube of approximately 20mm nominal bore is strapped to the rising main. The lower end is placed just above the pump discharge. The other end of the pipe is terminated above the borehole base plate. The water level can now be measured in two ways:

a) A dip meter probe is inserted in the dipper tube, and it lowered down until a reading is obtained. The dipper tube prevents false readings due to cascading or top filling boreholes.

b) The dipper tube can be connected to a compressor and filled with air. If a pressure GAUGE is fitted to the dipper tube (through a tee-piece), the reading will increase to a maximum at which time the pipe is full of air. The pressure at this point in kPa divided by 9,81(10 is also good enough ) will give the depth in metres at which the end of the pipe is under water.

The water levels in a borehole are the basis of many vital calculations used in system design and trouble shooting.

Submersible Pump Installation Tips

Page 15: Borehole Submersible Pumps - Incledon Pumps/Pentax Borehole SA.pdf · Borehole Submersible Pumps for use in: Residential Industrial ... The vertical speed of the water creates a strong

6) CABLE SIZING

Cable sizes must be sized according to the tables published by motor manufacturers and as these tables can be changed from time to time, it is therefore essential that all values be confirmed with a reputable submersible cable manufacturer before purchasing. The cable lengths shown in the charts are from the transformer to the motor and are designed to operate in a submerged condition.

8) NON-RETURN VALVE ON THE PUMP DISCHARGE

This is an essential piece of equipment. Leaking or non-existent valves cause shaft breakages, thrust bearing failure (up and down) and nuisance tripping.

9) MOTOR PROTECTION

The motor must be protected against the following fault conditions:

1) Over-current due to the pump end binding, incorrect motor and pump matching, voltage fluctuations and single phasing.2) Under loading due to low water level.3) Phase imbalance.4) Short circuits.

Electronic devices such as the “black bocs” combines relay protection with microprocessor driven intelligent system management. In addition it has the ability to log the last 160 switch-off events. This feature has proven to be a very effective aid in on site as well as remote troubleshooting.

10) COUPLING AND SPINE LUBRICATION

Before joining the pump and motor together, the coupling should be half filled with a good quality waterproof grease. Because of the close tolerances between the coupling and motor shaft splines, the pump and motor shafts must be regularly rotated during the assembly process. This allows excess grease to work its way out of the coupling. The internals of the pump could be damaged or jamming of the pump could occur if this procedure is not followed.

11) INDUCER SLEEVE

In order to ensure a low motor running temperature, it is essential that the air/gas bubbles, which build up on the outside of the motor shell, be removed. A sleeve manufactured from plastic of stainless steel must be fitted over the motor and pump inlet. The lower end is left open while the top end is sealed. This forces the pump to draw its water past the motor before it can reach the inlet. The relatively high velocity past the motor provides the kinetic energy necessary to remove the bubbles and provide a constant flow of cooler water past the motor.

If power is not available, and has to be provided by a generator, the table gives the minimum rating of the generator in KiloWatts (kW) or Kilo Volt Amperes (kVA)
